Charter Cove comes up short, still advances

| | Comments (5) |

The Charter Cove Post 755 baseball team, made up mostly of players from Charter Oak High School, came up short Tuesday in its quest to win a American Legion California State championship.
San Bernardino, which lost in the first round of the tournament, came all the way back to win the event, scoring wins of 5-4 and 20-12 over Charter Cove to win a state title.
Both teams advanced to the regionals, with San Bernardino playing in the West Regionals in Fairfield and Charter Cove traveling to Medford, Ore. for the Northwest Regionals.
Charter Cove, which lost in the championship round to Merced last year, advanced to the regionals for the second consecutive season.
Here is the story from our sister paper, the San Bernardino Sun, which rounds up San Bernardino's sweep.
Charter Cove coach Jon Garkow: "Although I'm disappointed that we didn't bring home our first state title, I'm very proud of the effort we put forth. These kids played their hearts out and finishing as state runners-up for the second consecutive year is quite an accomplishment, especially considering we only had 10 players."

First of all, thank you Steve Ramirez and the SGV Tribune for your coverage of the Charter Cove American Legion Baseball Team.
I direct my comments to the other reader. First of all, don't hide behind your anonymous tag. If you have a complaint about our program contact me.
If you happen to read this, state your name next time.
My guess is you are probably a parent of a Charter Oak or Northview player whose boy didn't get a starting position and not enough playing time or weren't invited to play on the Blue team.
But wait a minute, Garkow did a great job of playing everyone.

I will state my name, Joh sherrard, Manager of Charter Cove American Legion Post 755 baseball.
As Ramirez said: We are within the rules. We are not stacking the team. We just want to win. The only way to get to the next level and on to the State, Regional and World Series is getting older players.
We did not choke in State or Regional action, we just got beat by better teams.
Let me see, oh yes, San Bernardino (State Champs) and the teams in Oregon, all had more College players on their team.
American Legion baseball used to be teams made up of various high schools, but through the years high schools joined the league and did not use graduating seniors, just incoming seniors.
We are within the rules by drafting from three high schools.
Diamond Ranch had the same complaints a couple of years ago, saying we used college players and they only used the current high school players.
As I stated above, contact me. My number is: 626-587-7849 or just hide behind you enonymous tag.
Quinley and the other coaches do a grate job of "volunteering" their summer and they choose to get some older players.
Next time you are at the ol ball field, just ask Quinley to tell you about his brother Mike, back in the day, who was on the West Covina American Legion Post 790 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP team in 1970. Let me repeat that....WORLD SERIES CHAMPION. There is nothing in the World like bringing home a championship in any sport. I was not on that team, but a part of the program and followed that team and many others for years.
So, in conclusion, come out of hiding and contact me. Probably won't, but come this summer hopefully your son will join us for summer Legion ball.

Again, I state my name......John Sherrard....

It sounds like hate and jealousy to me when you rip kids who are just playing baseball. Last time I checked Legion ball is for players 19-and-under, not 17, so they are within the rules. If the other teams chose to make it 17 and under, that's their right as it is Cove's right to go with 19-year-olds, per the rules. Legion ball represents an area, not a high school and Post 755 represents Covina. I don't see anything wrong with what they do.

Charter Cove is STACKED with mostly graduated players from Charter oak and other local high schools. In their local Legion Area the teams they play against are "stacked" with players who are still in high school and not only that the entire team is from a single high school not from different high schools on one team like Charter Cove. Point is that CharterCove/Oak is like an All Star team playing against a league ball team...how hard fought are those victories? Does Legion Ball do anything for the CURRENT players at Charter Oak High School? NO. So Charter Cove Legion is doing great against average teams and the 2020 Charter Oak players get didley squat out of that. Is there not something out there better for the kids playing for Charter Cove and especially for next year's kids that will be at Charter Oak??? Makes no sense to me to even play Legion ball unless you are are a graduate who is not going to play any college ball.

It's not hate it's truth

CO,
Why the hate?
Why not praise the players for their effort?

Charter Oak...err...I mean Charter Cove CHOKED again. They get all this talent WHICH is NOT from the current Charter Oak High School baseball team, but from kids that have already graduated. They also stock their team with some of the best graduated players from the area and yet cannot win.

Legion ball allows this "stacking" your lineup but many teams in Legion ball do NOT do the same. The Charter Cove record is not as impressive as it looks as they play against inferior teams who just use players that are CURRENTLY high school and some teams have multiple players playing football. Legion ball does ZILCH to help Charter Oak High baseball program because they use players that are going on to college not current high school players like most teams do form the local Legion Posts.

Charter Oak...I mean Charter Cove should have won it again this year but once again they fail, and they will lose again in Oregon because kids will have to start preparing to go off to college and won't be able to attend the Oregon series.

Too bad the coaches at Charter Oak High School don't try to develop their own kids through the summer instead of playing Legion ball with a roster mostly made up of players that have already graduated from Charter Oak and other high schools.
