Steve’s Counterpoint: 70s were numero uno

Sorry, Fred, my good man, but the 1970s trump the 1980s. The 70s was the birth of the summer blockbuster), Monday Night Football, Pong and who could forget Bell-bottoms.
It’s also considered the glory years of the NFL, when the Cowboys, Rams and Vikings dominated the NFC. Did you know that from 1973-78, either the Cowboys, Rams or Vikings played in…and the AFC was always the Raiders, Steelers, Dolphins and Oilers. I still say Drew Pearson didn’t push off in the “Hail Mary” Game. Ah, those were the days!

My 1970s top 10 moves:
1. All the President’s Men (I am a journalist, after all)
2. Jaws
3. Star Wars
4. The Godfather
5. American Graffiti
6. Dog Day Afternoon
7. Patton
8. Rocky
9. The Dear Hunter
10. The Exorcist
HM: The Verdict, Brian’s Song (TV Movie), Young Frankenstein.

Here’s one of my favorite scenes from All the President’s Men. It’s not included, but my favorite line from the movie comes from Jason Robards as editor Ben Bradlee: Nothing’s riding on this mind you, except the first amendment of the Constitution, freedom of the press and perhaps the future of the country. Not that any of that matters, but if you guys (mess) up again, I’m going to get mad!”

Charter Cove comes up short, still advances

The Charter Cove Post 755 baseball team, made up mostly of players from Charter Oak High School, came up short Tuesday in its quest to win a American Legion California State championship.
San Bernardino, which lost in the first round of the tournament, came all the way back to win the event, scoring wins of 5-4 and 20-12 over Charter Cove to win a state title.
Both teams advanced to the regionals, with San Bernardino playing in the West Regionals in Fairfield and Charter Cove traveling to Medford, Ore. for the Northwest Regionals.
Charter Cove, which lost in the championship round to Merced last year, advanced to the regionals for the second consecutive season.
Here is the story from our sister paper, the San Bernardino Sun, which rounds up San Bernardino’s sweep.
Charter Cove coach Jon Garkow: “Although I’m disappointed that we didn’t bring home our first state title, I’m very proud of the effort we put forth. These kids played their hearts out and finishing as state runners-up for the second consecutive year is quite an accomplishment, especially considering we only had 10 players.”

Nate Montana going from Notre Dame to PCC

Chicago Tribune: Nate Montana, son of Irish and NFL legend Joe, has elected to spend the fall semester at Pasadena City College in order to get playing experience at the quarterback position. Team spokesman Brian Hardin said the departure has nothing to do with grades or discipline issues — it is simply a matter of Montana, a walk-on, knowing he’d be buried on the depth chart and in practices this fall. Montana is expected to return to Notre Dame for the spring semester.

Just Tribbin

With the football tab now a month away and today the first official day we begin working on new ideas for the section, does anyone have a suggestion for the cover? We have done our share of running backs and quarterbacks the past few seasons, is it time to grace the hogs on the cover? Maybe the best at each position? Or, just talk about anything you want because after all, we’re just Tribbin on Monday morning.

Does anyone remember the “Big Six” from 2006?

My last date failed the door test … another one and done..

A week-by-week look at the 2009 schedule, plus the over-under on Damien wins in 2009 = 5

The 2009 prep football schedule is set and ready to go by clicking the thread. I localized the week-by-week schedule, and what you might find interesting is that the regular season ends on Friday the 13th.

Fred’s over-under prediction: The over-under on Damien wins this season is 5. New coach Greg Gano can only do so much. They will have a good chance to win their last three games, and a week three encounter against Claremont. That’s four, a fifth win against Rancho, St. John Bosco, Charter Oak, Bishop Amat, Chino Hills and Glendora will be mighty difficult. I say they get one, but not two and finish 5-5. Enjoy your weekend!

Damien opponents, 2008 record
Sept 4 @ Rancho Cucamonga, 13-0-1
Sept 9 @ St. John Bosco, 7-3
Sept 18 vs. Claremont, 2-8
Sept 25 vs. Bishop Amat, 7-4
Oct 2 @ Charter Oak, 13-0-1
Oct 16 vs. Chino Hills, 10-2
Oct 23 @ Glendora, 8-4
Oct. 30 vs. Ayala, 9-3
Nov 6 @ Diamond Bar, 4-6
Nonv 12 vs. Chino, 2-8
