There was nothing like the 80s

| | Comments (49) |

To all the less fortunate who missed the 80s, know that we didn't have cell phones, we suffered through land lines and busy signals. We didn't have text messages, we slipped notes. We didn't sit in front of our computers with a Wii, we hiked to the nearest corner and dropped quarters on Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Pacman, etc. And the movies, don't get me started. I'm not talking about the Academy Award winners, I'm talking about the top 15 movies from the 80s that you memorized line-for-line and can watch over and over again......

The 80's signature cuff (we all did it) ... And yes, the hair presented by Aqua Net...

Fred's top 15
1. Breakfast Club (1985)
2. Caddyshack (1980)
3. The Karate Kid (1984)
4. Weird Science (1985)
5. Three Amigos (1986)
6. Say Anything (1989)
7. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
8. Better off Dead (1985)
9. Can't Buy Me Love (1987)
10. Fletch (1885), 11. Lucas (1986), 12. A Christmas Story (1983), 13. Risky Business (1983), 14. Top Gun (1986), 15. Vacation (1983)

Freddy! "Breakfast Club"?!?!? Horrible movie, beloved by a certain generation because their critical abilities had not yet developed.

Most quotable movie of the '80s: "Repo Man"!

Fred,

Your right, my mistake Animal House did come out in '78. So my beef should have been w/ Steve for not including it in his 70's blog.

But getting back to the important stuff...Winona Ryder over Phoebe Cates...Really??

LOL

Don't let "them" get to you Don said:

Basic...mine was tongue in cheek as well, lol

I respect Don's opinion, always have. Here's a shout out to Don...

After all these years I had no clue which school he supported or even if he had kids still playing. That's a remarkable accomplishment given the agendas that have been hammered out here.

Don's...grumpiness...admit it Don...that comment was a little old man grumpy...was out of character..but given the high bar he's put up....I just thought...hey someone ran over his dog or cut him off on the freeway....lol

Then THE DON...blasts away with the Van Halen and Carter references...well Don that's tough to beat....but again so unlike you.

Don, your points are pretty cool and well thought out so don't let some coward tweek you with your kid hates you comments. I'm sure you kow what your kid think about you an dthey know what you think about them...nuff said.

House Parties with Live Bands were cool but how do you pick up on girls when everyone's bopping their heads and can't hear each other...give me a Motown Stack and a couple of pretty girls and about 2 hours...and someone's got a story to tell and a smile on their face!!!!!!

"Cowboys to Girls" !!!!

Bonita huh?...never would have guessed it...well done Donnie.

Stunned,

Now I'm stunned..my son attends Bonita, is there something I should know??? I mean besides the fact that we have no filed for the softball team, or weight room worthy of calling a wight room, or that the wrestling tam has nowhere to practice, or the we have to share the fields we do have with everyone??? Don't get me wrong, these are just MY issues, I LOVE BONITA... We moved to LV so that my kids could attend better schools so my comments are tongue-in-cheek, but you seemed shocked about Bonita and I was just wondering why?

As for Don and InTheKnow, hey we all have opinions and that is why we come in here and throw our two cents in, so I don't have any problems with either doing so...just try and not be over the top about it, after all some kids come on here and read this...

Fred,

I still where my Chuck Taylors everyday, Azusa drive in, hiking at the East Fork, Pup & Taco, being able to go anywhere at night without any fear. These are just some of the differences from the other years and today. High School Sports has changed drastically, Sports used to be the way we would bridge the gap between latinos and whites at Gladstone high, It is a different world today, Sports helped me get to know allot of kids that otherwise I would not have had the opportunity to know. I would have missed out on Menudo and other hispanic cultural items. No more multiple sports playing in High school with the new CIF rules. The last years before college for kids now force the issue of deciding between A sport instead. We grew up in a completely different world, I wish my kids could have been there. lets keep the hope alive for a better tomorrow for all of our kids

OK Tony, we'll be serious. What exactly is it you want me to address? And to what end? So this guy can spew out some more toxic name calling? Are we angling for another ongoing battle of philosophies written out on the WWW?

Sorry, not my style. However, for the record:

This guy has problems with me. That's fine although if this guy had any guts he would identify himself at least to the degree he is willing to identify me.

He calls me a douchebag here. I'm unsure what good this does unless it was intended in some way to provoke a response.

He also asserts nobody cares about my “arrogant opinions. His opinion, one he's entitled to although not consistent with the feedback I've gotten over the past few years.

He uses the moniker intheknow and asserts I must “be some blockhead in law enforcement or something” as if what I do has anything to do with the rest of his arguments.

He claims I “emasculate” my “poor son” by being “a star on some high school blog”. This actually is the best because I in no way pretend to be the “star” of anything much less this blog which has less to do with High School every day.

Emasculate? Please. From what I can determine in speaking with them, all of my kids find my input here to be somewhere around the “amusing” range and anyone who has ever spoken for a moment to any of them wouldn't dream of using the word emasculate.

Late 70's early 80's for me, lots of back yard rockband parties and also Jimmys night club down in La mirada on Friday nights. What about the valley girl talk; "Like.. Oh my God, gag me with a spoon". KROQ was just getting started in the late 70's, early 80's; B52's,Devo,Ramones, X,
Plymsols, Psycadellic Furs,Men at work, etc. On the Disco side Madonna was just getting started, and does anybody remember the group Lime?
Or the group that made the song "living in video"? That was a long time ago.
An earlier post mentioned the Sierra league being strong in the 80's, but I believe the 70's were best years of the Sierra league. During my highschool years, which was 74 to 78, the Sierra league may have been the toughest league in the state. I went to Pioneer HS down in Whittier, but I had heard about the schools in the Sierra Which consisted of West Covina, South Hills, Los Altos,Glendora,Edgwood,Covina,Wilson,& La Puente, the Sierra won the CIF 4A and Big 5 titles 3 out of the 4 years I was in school, 4A and Big 5 were the equivalent of today's Pac 5 or D1 divisions.
I'm not sure why but in the years 74, 75,76,&77 there was an extra game in the playoffs the 4a playoffs consisted of 4 playoff games and then the championship game, unlike the other years where playoffs where 3 games & then the Championship game.
Here is West Covina's Record when I was in Highschool [74,75,76,77]:
1974
WC - 27 Burbank 6
WC - 34 Arcadis 0
WC - 37 Wilson 0
WC - 32 Covina 0
WC - 21 Los Altos 14
WC - 6 Glendora 7
WC - 8 Edgewood 15
WC - 0 La Puente 6
WC - 0 S. Hills 7
Whats interesting about 1974 is Greg Gano was the
West Covina QB, WC was 5 & 0 with Gano then he got hurt and they lost the last 4 games without him.
1975:
WC - 33 Burbank 7
WC - 19 Arcadia 17
WC - 10 South Hills 9
WC - 30 Wilson 7
WC - 17 Covina 7
WC - 37 Los Altos 14
WC - 9 Glendora 12
WC - 21 Edgewood 0
WC - 39 La Puente 10
1975 playoffs:
WC - 21 Edison 19
WC - 23 San Marcos 20
WC - 12 Loyola 21
Hunington Beach Edison was 10 & 0 and ranked as one of the top teams in the nation when WC beat them in the first round, two games later WC lost to Loyola 21 to 12, Loyola went on to beat Anaheim in the 4th round then beat St.Paul in the 4A title game the score was 14 to 13. Loyola also won the national championship that year.
1976:
WC - 23 Upland 0
WC - 13 Fontana 0
WC - 39 La Puente 0
WC - 12 South Hills13
WC - 27 Wilson 0
WC - 48 Covina 6
WC - 14 Los Altos 7
WC - 42 Glendora 12
WC - 23 Edgewood 12
1976 Playoffs:
WC - 24 Eisenhower 8
WC - 10 Loyola 7
WC - 17 St.Paul 14
WC - 16 Los Altos 21
After WC's Semifinal loss to Los Altos the Conquerers went on to beat Fontana in the Championship game. If you notice, West Co. beat both of those teams during the regular season, only to loose to Los Altos in the semifinal rematch. WC was winning late in the game only to loose on a last minute turnover when the WC center snapped the ball over the punters head and Los Altos scored a touchdown. Los Altos finished that season ranked 5th in the nation.
Also notice the playoff victories over perennial powerhouses St Paul & Loyola.
1977:
WC - 44 Upland 0
WC - 14 Muir 14
WC - 42 Edgewood 14
WC - 46 La Puente
WC - 13 South Hills14
WC - 34 Wilson 0
WC - 49 Covina 0
WC - 16 Los Altos 14
WC - 40 Glendora 20
1977 Playoffs:
WC - 21 Eisenhower 14
WC - 10 Newport Harbor 14
West Covina, South Hills, Los Altos put out some of the best teams in the state and naton in the 60's and 70's.

You say you wanna go back?

Memories? Gotta go back to the 70's and before.

I recall disagreements , (driveway rasslin matches?), over goils with Jamie Quirk and trying to convince the guy at Mills Liquor that Bill Bain REALLY was 21. (You Whittier guys probably know what I'm talkin' about).

Parties? Dude, we had seminal versions of the Blasters, Los Lobos, and Van Halen in back yard parties depending upon which direction from Whittier you wanted to roam. Friday night with Eddie Van Halen and Saturday with Caesar Rosas. Trump that pal.

Connie Mack ball with the likes of Gary Carter as the other Catcher or the Roenicke boys over here, (actually over THERE for me back then, but you get it, I'm sure).

Wine I don't recall, must have run in wrong crowd. We did have sixpacks of Bud for about $2; usually split between two guys with the Alpha Male getting to keep the plastic thingie that held the cans. This was hung upon one's belt like a scalp. Tres hip.

Now let's get on with the Prep coverage. Okay?

The biggest thing in those days was MTV and Music Video...and understanding the words to the songs that were almost anthems.... WHITE HORSE !!!!....and PURPLE RAIN !!!!

Wow has it been 20 years already????

We used to drink mickys big mouth and lowenbrau.
We would only go to parties that had our name on the flyers or a dj that we knew. Chicks rolled in packs of 10 or more and they whore little skin tight dresses with with pumps, and big hair with a lot of chacha net. I had hundereds of cassetts of all kinds of music that i got from dj's or straight from the radio(remember 10Q?)
Everyone was cool back in the 80's. yes their were fights, but like the other posters mentioned, no guns or knives. I knew a lot of Cholos, but they kept to themselves. Many Cholos converted to Disco. The best place to cruise was Catholic girls high school. Fishing is a bucket is what we use to say.
