Who has the toughest schedules in the SGV? Bishop Amat, Damien and Glendora

| | Comments (53) |

We're only in July, so instead of doing the top ten preseason football teams, how about the top ten toughest schedules in 2009. There is no surprise with Bishop Amat and Damien 1 & 2, but a mild surprise to list Charter Oak at No. 7. You tell me, do you agree or would you chage it up ...

just asking...you're hurting the boy's brain.

great analogy by the way. i'm still waiting for Fred or sgv guru to explain how only BA gets worse after losing their players while CO and SH get better with untested QB's? especially one one of those QBs couldn't cut the mustard at BA or beat out Allen last year and is being challenged by Santiago...another untested Qb at the Varsity level.

I'm not saying what BA's record would be but fixating on 7-4 is fool's gold.

Why not talk about biceps size and equate that to knock out power...is this issue done with already.

Let's get back to how team's get better losing a senior heavy team with playoff experience vs an untested team with a mandatory learning curve.

Hey JA:

Can't answer that one for you. Take it to an education blog. Good luck solving your daughter's issues.

I do know that 7-4 speaks for itself. Maybe you can address that.

just askin said:

Fruit Bowl-maybe you can answer this one. I'm confused and need help.
I can't figure out why my daughter didn't get valedictorian when she had a 4.2GPA in all her regular classes with sewing, foods, & dance as her electives. The girl who got it only had a 4.0 in her class load full of AP courses - so my daughters GPA was clearly better.
maybe you can explain why my daughter wasn't recognized for her A's in sewing, foods, and dance while some other girl got worse grades in AP Physics, Calculus, etc. C'mon who really deserved it more.

Fred riddle me this:

South Hills loses Goss, Bowden, Deen and others and is better?????

Charter Oak loses Allen, Perry and other and are better?

Bishop Amat loses Price, Seals and others and is worst?

SH loses Deen and has better QBs...okay?

CO loses Allen and has TWO better QBS...okay?

Amat has Jerry Mac coming back for his Senior season and Amat is worse off...okay?

SH made so much last year about fielding a senior battle tested team and pretty much underachieved in big games.

CO made so much about having a dream team lead by a three year monster and finished off it's destiny only to schedule a couple of middle schools to show how far the program has come.

Bishop Amat was viewed as a team that would get beaten like a drum, lose every big game and get blasted in the first round but instead had over night improvement and scored one of the most historic comebacks in SGV history and almost beat the best the best team in the Nation...or at least one of them....but this year will somehow tank and not show up????

South Hills was over rated last year or under coached or under acheived...I don't see it any other way...DR broke them in the playoff game when poor coaching, bad player decisions and lack of toughness came together...that and getting hit in the face over and over and over again.

CO was one tough squad last year but what team challenged them where anyone can say we know how they handle adversity?

Bishop Amat has proven one thing over and over...their athletes dominate when they transfer out to other schools....Mc Bride, Wells and Sermons were their new teams best players by far, almost from the day they set foot on their new campuses...so obviously Amat does something right.

CO VS. Orange Lutheran last year?...Olu beats them by 35!

SH vs Crespi last year? ...this game is over by halftime.

Why do people get sucked into this argument other than to forget the beatings Amat has dished to them in the past.

Amat needs to be humbled said:

Amat thinks they are sooo good because they schedule a tough schedule and are D-1. Realisticly though are they one of the big powerhouses that are always dominant in the Pac5. NOOO, this year with losing all there highly touted Seniors from last year. They have a couple good players returning but not enough to get them past .500.

rick taylor said:

Amat wanted to match up with DOM cuz their pac 5 and going against another valley team like CO would do nothing if it came down to another at large.

Funny but someone mentioned Fred being on the Laker Blog...didn't even know one existed but whatever...one thing I saw was long drawn out comments. Some were very very long, complex and in truth quite fascinating...didn't see too much hating at each other.

I think a good way of judging someone is by the friends they keep and not by their enemies, by the kids they raise and not by the things they have, by their deeds and not by their promises, from where they started and not by where they pretend to be...and finally I judge a person by his ability to ability to improve himself and those around him.

When you read Coach Johnson's comments to the Baldwin Park community you heard something you hadn't before...compassion and brotherhood. When you hear Coach walker speak you hear a man who understands his role within a challenged community and how he fosters brotherhood and familiy.

Sorry for the lectures and deep ended outlook but that's the way I was taught and coached...".every" day is a good day, there are learning moments in life at every turn and when I meet my Maker I'll make no apologies for my life or the choices I've made.

I might not get in on the first try but I'm sure my kids will throw a rope over for me and maybe have a few of my friends help pull my fat a** over....once "IN" ...I know I can talk long enough to stay....did I mention I've had a full life?

May God bless you and heal your wicked soul...He did mine.

Here's the key..."Don't ask for something, don't ask for an outcome...ask for strenght.... for HIs Plan...and peace and prosperity will come."

Amat 73 knows me well as do others...you do not define FAITHFUL FOLLOWER...my kids and life do. As they say in Vegas..." ALL IN!!"

You my friend...who's buffing now? I'm holding four Aces and a Queen..."WHAT YOU GOT!!!"

TARTAN DAD said:

Looking at the 2009 fb schedules I agree with Amat having the toughest schedule. Damien & Glendora have tough schedules also. I think Glendora is gonna be tough for the next couple of years in football. But, Damien is gonna make some progress in the next few years with Gano at the helm. Gano got some good freshmen this year, and will continue to recruit from local areas. For Glendora, look out for Donovan Holmes & Corey Victoria, both sophmores, could have a bright future. I heard that the Sherwoods from Glendora are at Damien. They could be difference makers in the future. I think Glendora will win their division this year. Amat will be tough, but that schedule is daunting. Go Tartan's

Had to have been Gano, cause these are the back-end of a two year contract. Last year LA had these four games, in a row, at home. He probably thought he was doing first-year-coach Felipe a favor with the four straight home games last year.

Also heard their star* freshman RB from last year has quit football to play basketball.

Thanks Basic said:

Thanks Basic!

Basic weren't you asking about club volleyball teams for your daughter once? As i recall everyone mentioned the importance of starting early and the value of "club" level competition to even compete at teh high shcool level...remember that?

Well what kind of experience do you think the other team had while Salesian players picked up the game within the past two years...crazy to think they could compete much less win it all against a legend.

How's Bonita's Football team look? I think their basketball team will surprise people as we both know.

Caoch Walker is a stud...too bad Damien doesn't compete in Boys Volleyball considering as the potential talent out here and all the scholarships available. Imagine Big Mike Jormitsma at 6"10" playing Volley under Coach Walker...kid would be at USC or Pepperdine instead of being tied up in knots trying to not make mistakes.

anyone know why SGV schools don't compete?

I see your point. Sorry if I came off less than appropriate. I'd just seen the 10PM showing of THE STONING OF SORAYA M. and was in a foul mood. Great film and an interesting study in GROUP THINK.

If you think 7-4 makes them less in you mind I can do nothing to change that opinion. CO, as I've said, is a great team with great players who will hopefully get many D1 scholarships...and I wished them well in every post (check).

My point was CO had a choice to play up or play it safe and break in a few new players at key positions...i don't think I wa sout of line or disrespectful...just making a football observation...so if you are or were offended...I'm sorry.

Matter of fact I said I thought Golden was a flat out stud and in my opinion better than Adam while SGV GURU didn't even rank him as so...just a different of opinion and seeing as Golden verballed to a D1 school I'd say I wasn't wrong.

There's a kid I know from CO, played Basketball with my son during their SD NJB days and he's a stud as well and I read nothing on him.

His Dad was the meanest SOB on a football field I have ever seen...ever. Just down right nasty and his son is a gentle giant who will get his "ride" as well. Started as a Soph on teh Championship O Line....just wait.

Props to Coach Lou...BIG FAN, Props to CO...welcome to the Sierra League...everyone is better now that CO is part of the SL....baseball season should be wild !!!!

Hope that ends this misunderstanding.

MUSTANGS STORY GOES WORLD WIDE !!! said:

Great article by LA TIMES writer David Wharton about Salesian recent CIF Championship Volleyball team in Monday's paper.

Google the article and see Coach Walker break down what Salesian is all about...Family First.

I hear there is a Movie and Book deal in the works.

Every time i see Coach Walker I ask myself..."What more can this man do?" He's an incredible individual who inspires thru hard work and builds a strong sense of Family.

Every senior on that team will attend college, one to Boston College, and will have their Championship forever.

No whining about demographics, no whining about how impossible it is to dream of Championships because the other teams are bigger, stronger or better funded...sooner or later you have to nut up and hold yourself accountable.

This year Salesian's Soccer Coach Johnson came on this very blog and addressed the Baldwin Park community after losing in their Championship quest and did so in a way no other SGV coach would dare. Sports is about life lessons...at every opportunity....when you win and especially when you lose.

Congratulations to the Salesian community and to Coach Walker... MUSTANGS IN THE HOUSE !!!!!

My friends texted me all day yesterday...DID YOU SEE SALESIAN..WE'RE WORLD WIDE !!!"

The name of the article is "PLAYING OVER THEIR HEADS"...I'll send some over to a couple of whiners I know...framed with a little note at tHE bottom that reads...

"YOU COULDN'T HANG AT SALESIAN..AND YOU KNOW IT!"

My original statement was that Amat opens with a team that had 8 losses last season. That is a fact. It has already been double checked. You are the only one popping off. You called out CO for opening with a weak team when Amat is doing the exact same.

Also, I never mocked Dominguez. I only stated facts (ex. 8 loss team with athletic dept. issues and two new head football coaches in less than two seasons). Facts are facts. Just like 7-4 is 7-4.

kurmujin said:

What braniac saddled an already challenged Los Altos with four straight away games, the third through the sixth? Granted Wilson and La Serna are just around the corner, but four in a row! How well will the Conq crowd travel if losing?

El Rey said:

Fruit Bowl Jones,

You know the more I think about it you're absolutely right. Forget facts and keep saying what you're saying ignoring all information that puts your original comment in question or down right wrong. Mocking Dominguez is just silly and reflects your overall lack of substance. Futhermore, bringing up issues that have nothing to do with your original contention and creating straw man issues that don't hold water is an exercise in blog grade school antics which I won't entertain.

Charter Oak's original refusal to play Bishop Amat or extend their contract is similar to Tervor Ariza's ploy with the Lakers, which back fired. The Lakers like like Bishop Amat will always move on rarely play hard to get games.

I'll tell you what you want to hear, if it makes you feel better. You're right and everyone with eyeballs and the ability to read is wrong.

Feel better. Beep Beep, or in your case honk honk.

Dan Author Profile Page said:

Great topic Fred,
I can agree with your list, and I also side with Domingez being a quality game for Amat, there aren't many teams inside or outside of D1 that can claim to have beaten Poly in recent times.
Damien has a brutal schedule along with Glendora
and Diamond Ranch. I think South Hills & West Covina's schedules are pretty even, South Hills has two tough preleague games, La Habra & Tesoro. La Habra keeps getting better every year, & Tesoro is a legit D1 school, but I don't think they will be as good as last season because they lost most of that team to graduation, they will probably reload somewhat
but I don't think they will be amongst the D1 elites. Ayala could be tough but I think South Hills would be favored in that game.
West Covina's schedule can match S.Hills schedule with tough games vs Amat & Glendora and Venice. Amat showed they are back to being a legit D1 school, but like Tesoro, they have heavy graduation losses, but with that coaching staff they will still beat some of those tough teams on their schedule. I think Glendora will be one of the best teams in the SGV next season,
most of their key players are back plus they had one of the best jv teams in the area last year,
the QB from that team is very good. Venice will be another tough game for West Co., having beaten Carson not only last year but also in 05 and 03 and playing them close in the years in between shows the caliber of team Venice can put out. Venice also beat Oaks Christian just two seasons ago, and they beat Loyola in 06 and 03.

Fruit Bowl Jones said:

El Rey:
I double checked. Compton Dominguez did in fact lose 8 games last year. Thanks for clearing that up. Also, let's not act like we don't know what game should be on the schedule for that night. Sadly, Coach Hags and the limp wristed Lancers turned down the match-up.

And FYI, the entire athletic dept. at Dominguez is a mess at present. Coaching changes are one thing. This is much more. Former coaches and AD are doing their best to stay out of jail, not to mention avoid more CIF hot water. Players have left en masse. Not a solid situation at all. They're not the powerhouse that you present them to be. Much like Amat is not the powerhouse you think they are.

El Rey said:

gotta respect them, you bring up a great point most sgv fans don't follow sports outside of our scenic landscape, and that's a shame. maybe that's one of the reasons some bloggers continue the argument of bishop amat's confidence/arrogance/pompousity, when in fact it's an earned and justifiable sense of accomplishment.

not sure how many fans have seen serra practice or play but they are a great measuring stick for anyone. maybe now that charter oak is scheduled to join the sierra league, and thereby making the SL stronger. Maybe other areas will see the sgv as more than kissing cousins.

I think CO in the Sierra League will make everyone tougher and at least glendora and CO will be an annual event, as it should be.

gotta respect them said:

Compton Dominguez has a veteran program.

They have regularly played Loyola and Carson. They lost to Corona Centennial the year before last, and they beat Long Beach Poly 3 years ago. This program is well known and respected throughout the Southern Section.

Damien in for a Long Season said:

I'm a Damien supporter, but this year is going to be a long year for the boys. We have a real tough schedule.

I've been to several passing league games and the boys look pretty weak and slow compared to many other schools. We really need to get the boys in the weight room.

Gano is a good coach, but you can only work with the group you have. No amount of coaching is going to make up for the lack of strength and limited athleticism we have this year.

It's going to take Gano a few years to rebuild this program.

Hoping I'm wrong, but calling it like I see it.

Fruit Bowl Jones,

I think you might want to recheck your assertion:

Dominguez prior to last season's 2-8 record went 48-4 in the previous 5 seasons and had a whole lot of speed, skill and athleticism. Can anyone argue that? How many recruiters have visited Dominguez over that time span. I bet CO hasn't had as many D1 players seriously looked at over that time span unless you're counting this year's imports. Gardena in the same time span made the playoffs once in 04, went winless in 07, won three game in 06 and has gone winless in league at least twice in five years. CO will win a Championship this year and might go undefeated but when the State Bowls don't call don't act surprised.

El Rey get serious. You really want to call out CO when Amat opens with a team that had 8 losses last season? That's funny.

Typical Amat honk.

Bishop Amat has toughest schedule. Could go 3-2 first five or 2-3 the first five. Good chance they go 0-5 last five games. Could be looking at 2-8 record. 3 to 4 wins look reasonable. Very tough schedule.

Here's an interesting side note to CO's SGV # 1 ranking and their insistence that they could compete with Bishop Amat last year FOR SURE and this year AS WELL.

CO's first two week, or is that weak, opponents are Gardena and LA University,

Gardena was outscored 140+ to 20 in league! Coming off a 5 game losing streak.

University outscored even worse in league, winless in league and winners of only 1 game all year.

So much for challenging your staff and your players. There are two thoughts here...one feast on the weak while you break in a new QB and two GO UNDEFEATED going into league confident they are a well oiled machine...either way hope CO the best.

Can we finally put the 7-4 record sucks BS to rest and the CO is No 1 in the SGV BS to rest.

Tough to defend those choices but then again Lou wants to go out on a three peat and then retire...just a thought.

By far Bishop Amat. No brainer, St. Bonnies come on Amat will get whacked at home that nite. Add their league with a tough Loyola and Notre Dame team, plus Crespi is Crespi. Who the heck knows what you will get week one with Compton Dominguez. St. Paul always a battle and Alemany beat Amat last time Amat went up there but that was a Verti coached team nonetheless Alemany is very well coached. Anyone with a Walnut, Los Altos or Wilson on their schedule is not playing a tough schedule. Add a Roddy coached Dranch team playing at home and it could be a tough nite.
