Breaking News: Charter Oak sophomore quarterback Travis Santiago cleared to play

| | Comments (37) |

The CIF-Southern Section reversed its decision on Charter Oak sophomore quarterback Travis Santiago on Wedenesday, approving his request for a transfer based on "change of address." Santiago left South Hills during his freshman year last February for Charter Oak. The sophomore is currently in a quarterback battle with junior Josiah Thropay over who will take over for Chris Allen when the season starts next Friday against Gardena. Before Wednesday's ruling, Santiago was on "restricted" football status until February of 2010. Charter Oak officials maintained all along they had its paperwork in order, and now can put this behind and get ready to defend its Miramonte and Southeast Division titles. On a side note, from what the coaches have been telling me, Santiago and Thropay could alternate possessions to start the season until the coaching staff is comfortable naming a permanent starter.

FOX SPORTS UPDATE: It's officially official. We told you a month ago that Fox Sports West intends on covering the Sept. 25 Rancho Cucamonga-Charter Oak showdown live on television. With both teams going 13-0-1 and winning section titles, their only blemish was a tie against each other at R.C., last season. Fox is hoping and praying both teams are undefeated when they meet again in the SGV's backyard. This IS the nonleague game of the year.

Thropay...pure talent!
It's gonna be another great year.

Nuff said...for now.

Its going to be a battle at QB between Santiago and Thropay. They both have strong arms, they both have some kinks to work out when it comes to rolling out and passing. Overall we have a great shot at another CIF Championship. Chargers strongest points.
QB Thropay or Santiago
RB Adam Muema
LB Keith Smith
DB Brandon Golden
DB A.J Powell
WR Dennis Rufus
WR Christione Boyd
OL/DL All 11 Srs. Are big and can move there feet.

I'd say that Notre Dame is the only one that "handed their ass to them." If I remember in the other games they got two wins and competed pretty well in the other two. watch and compare. there is no comparison. you'll see quickly how the teams around here would get "handed their ass" in all six games.

get their *** handed to them said:

THAT is the level Bishop Amat plays at.

THAT is the level they get their ass handed to them every year too.

Actually, that may be a pretty accurate comparison between Santiago and Barkley.

I think we are on the same page. I just wish that some of those guys stayed the course and played their games in the home town. But from what I see this years freshman class is going to be one of the best in ages. The word is out for them to become more cohesive and win Championship Games not just league titles. Monrovia has a chance to move up the food chain a lot sooner than most schools in the area based on home grown talent alone that is rarely obtained in a city the size of Monrovia. I am probably the biggest Bueno fan on the Cats side of the field. He brings his A game every play and thats what I like to see in a leader. If the other players take his attitude No one will be able to compete against the Cats without Bringing their A+ game. Ps. tomorrow is the annual Green and White game, That used to be the toughest game on our schedule back in the 80's.

Much information has been written about Santiago, and most of the information has been false. The kid is an athlete and he has proven himself on the field without a doubt. He proved himself in junior all-American, and he proved himself as a freshman at South Hills. Charter Oak is giving him the opportunity to prove himself now, and anyone who watches him play will agree that he is definitely proving himself again. Anyone who talks to the kid is impressed by his humility, and anyone who watches him play is impressed by his talent. All you out there who are dishing out false information based on heresay, shut up, sit down and hang on because you're in for the ride of your life watching Santiago take CO to another championship; mark my word!

"This IS the nonleague game of the year."?? Seriously?
Try 10/2: St Bonaventure at Bishop Amat
THAT is the best NON-league game of the year in the SGV.
For those that can't make it, here's a suggestion.
Watch the following FoxSports West Games of the week:
Long Beach Poly-Ventura St. Bonaventure on Sept. 11
Encino Crespi-Anaheim Servite on Sept. 18
Santa Ana Mater Dei-Orange Lutheran on Oct. 16
Loyola-Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Nov. 6
THAT is the level Bishop Amat plays at. Week after week. FIVE teams (and last years playoff opponent) from their schedule on Fox Game of the Week.
Then compare Covina Charter Oak-Rancho Cucamonga on Sept. 25 and it will look like a JV game. Seriously.

Observantcat: I hope you didn't think that I was demeaning Thropay. In fact, I think that he is pretty darn good. I just think that Bueno poses as such a deadly dual threat especially in the new offense. I do hope that Thropay gets the nod over at CO, so that people outside of M-town can realize what kind of talent we produce here in this small town. (ie Golden, Muema, Youngblood, Brooks, and the Canada boys just to name a few) Only if we could have kept them here.

Well still academically ineligible right...or I am confused with Thropay?

CO you know!!! said:

D-Mo,

have you seen those new offensive lineman at CO, they are HUGE! by far the strongest and biggest group of lineman yet.

GTDT said:

Yes, Santiago has 3 older brothers and they were all damn good at any sport. Great genes!!!!!

Fred, I apologize for getting a little ticked when you brought this up earlier because I knew the paper work was filed correctly.

When is our tee time? once again my treat.

Thats the scary thing about the situation altogether, Both are D_mn good athletes, Bueno is one of the best potential running QB's in the valley. Both could benefit the team if needed be at the same time. I could only imagine Bueno taking an open pass out of the backfield. Thropay has an arm and the height to keep a good defense off balance. Hitting the open Man would be his goal all night. Its rare you have to QB's with opposite skills coming in at the same year. If Maddox had the two of them playing at the same time I'm sure he'd go with a great passing game as well as a great running game. Both players are leaders in their own respective game and both players know how to win. Thropay is someone that I have seen throughout his Jr. All American years be years above most of his peers when it comes to playing QB. I'm very grateful that we have a kid like Nick at that position because he possesses a much greater threat to a lot of defenses.

DRanchhh- Are you going to play word games here? "out of area transfers." How about the "New" in area transfers (underclassmen) that have joined the program after leaving from other schools? They count too don't they? You get Athletes the same way everybody else does. Someone is not happy where there at, so they go somewhere else. I bet those returning athletes had alot of contact with "people" from DRanchhh to get them to see that DR was the place for them. Otherwise, they could have gone to anyother school. If DR wasn't good enough in the beginning, why now????? I'm a bit of a conspiracy theorist.

Where would we find the listings for the "Fox Sports West" game of the week? Do they have the whole season printed out some where? Any help out there guys?

now if the effing hypocrites in the CIF death panels can do likewise for los Canadas. p****e c****a tu *****!

D-Mo said:

Regardless of who plays QB, there better be some replacements for those OL beasts from last year. If that happens, CO should be in fine shape.

CATS 11 Author Profile Page said:

Observantcat: I highly doubt that Thropay can beat out Bueno at M-town. Bueno fits into Maddox' new offensive scheme alot better.

curious said:

wonder how many DR players come from attendance areas of Ganesha, Garey, Pomona, Diamond Bar, Walnut, Montclair, Ontario, Don Lugo, etc.

SGV FOOTBALL said:

Booyahhh,

dont worry "(D)Ranch Dressing" is mad because he doesnt get the quality athlete transfers. As Co does. Thats right i said transfers not recruits, the difference is the quality players want to go to CO BA SH ECT. Who wants to go all the way to Pomona to play football anys.

DRanchhhh said:

Dude.....beside sermons two years ago, enlighten me on who we have picked up who happens to live
Out of the area. We share a 10 sq mile area w chino hills, ayala, diamond bar, ganesha, garey, walnut and don logo. So.
Please enlighten me. I have noticed on these blows that when the truth is put out there,
You guys get your panties in a bunch. Accept that year end and out that those three schools
Get transfer athletes.

Booyahhh said:

Observantcat errr, Mr. Thropay, take it easy pal, your kid will get a chance to compete on the field. You don't have to sell him so hard on the blog. I'm sure he will rise to the top if he is all they say he is?
DRanchhh- Take a look in your own backyard before you start calling out (albeit backhandedly) other schools in the SGV about transfers. I believe you have gotten a few "New" kids from surrounding schools too (some close, some not so close).

Again? said:

Doesnt this Santigao kid have an older brother?

Has the A-11 offense been officially ruled out? This two-headed beast could do some damage.

Great job SANTIAGO!!

Santiago has been a part of Charter Oak since since he was little. He deserves to shine too and will. He is incredible to watch in football and baseball!! Cant wait to see him as the QB for Charter Oak.

DRanchhhh said:

I wish to heck we got QB's, RB's and WR's to just transfer to DR. This is crazy with BA, CO and SH getting all of these transfer kids.

Observantcat said:

Thropay has seen action as a freshman at Monrovia High School and would have been the starter there in his Sophomore year had he continued to stay. He would probably start anywhere with the kind of accuracy and fire power in his arm.although he only had 8 passing attempts on the Varsity level 2 went for TDs. He was also the starting JV QB at Monrovia that year where that team went undefeated. I'm not sure how many touch downs`.
Unless this kid Santiago is another Matt Barkley I don't see the fuss.
I hope Thropay get his chance to shine this could be an even better year for Charter Oaks. I see them going 13-0 again this year.

Mr. Thropay said:

Dang it!

SGV FOOTBALL said:

I guess we have to go the Gardena game to get an idea of who will be starting qb for the season. Just wandering if thropay has played a down of varsity football? If not i can see why its such a close call to see whos qb.
