Football: Who to pay attention to in Week 0?

| | Comments (42) |

For many, the football season begins next week. Here is a list of the "zero" week games, and for fun I will list them in the order of importance in terms of our coverage. This gives you an idea of what we think are most important games to our readers. You can agree or disagree, but most of you will agree :)

Thursday, Sept. 3
1. La Puente at Gabrielino, 7 p.m. - Great Thursday night opener, two new head coaches making their debut. I'm feeling La Puente, think they have a great shot.
2. Azusa vs. Garey at Citrus College, 7 p.m. - How will the Aztecs respond after one of the greatest years in school history?

Friday, Sept. 4
1. Damien vs. Rancho Cucamonga at Los Osos, 7 p.m. - Are you kidding me, Greg Gano makes his debut against the defending champion and No. 1-ranked team in the Central Division.
2. San Dimas at Los Altos, 7 p.m. -- The best local match-up between two teams that have a lot to prove. Will San Dimas rebound after losing their entire backfield? And is Los Altos ready to become Los Altos again under second-year coach Felipe Aguilar.
3. Diamond Ranch at Muir, 7 p.m. -- Third time's the charm? I sense a rivalry building here, these teams split last year, but the Ranch knocked out the Mustangs in the playoffs. Muir is debuting it's new field turf surface, so trust, they won't lose this one.
4. Gardena at Charter Oak, 7 p.m. -- The defending champs and No. 1 team in the area is always intriguing. I'm setting the line at Chargers + 28.
5. Nogales at Baldwin Park, 7 p.m. -- Is Nogales really the weak link in the San Antonio? Is Baldwin Park really the favorite in the VVL? We will know much more after this. Can't wait to see the Braves' new additions from Duarte.
6. West Covina at El Rancho, 7 p.m. -- Not being disrespectful leaving the Bulldogs this far down. They should handle this rather easily, and very curious to see just how dominant they can be.
7. Norwalk at South El Monte, 7 p.m. -- All eyes on the new coaching staff at South El Monte under former La Puente coach Ray Hernandez. Everything I'm hearing is positive, but now the real proof comes after kickoff.
8. Westview at Bonita, 7 p.m. -- The Bearcats are another "not sure what to expect," team. I was at the school over the weekend, and was impressed with their size. You know, maybe they will be a surprise.
9. Duarte at Cajon, 7 p.m. -- Assuming the Falcons have enough players to field a team, lets see if new coach Tip Sanders can work his magic again.
10. Mountain View vs. Workman at La Puente, 7 p.m. -- I'm already on record saying that Workman will win the Montview. Hope they prove me right.
11. Western Christian vs. Gladstone at Citrus College, 7 p.m. -- This is not Covina Western Christian anymore, they have moved to Upland. Anyway, the Gladiators can't do any worse than last season. Can they?

Any word on Sierra Vista? What do they have coming back? Are they still playing Firebaugh week zero it was on the board but I see it was taken off so are they having a scrimmage?

LA ? said:

LA has more than you think said,

47, that interesting .....

That number is half of what they had last year.

I have personally talked to multi Cougar parents and a couple LA players. The biggest number any of them gave was the low 30's.

What is it about LA parents, so what about your JV team. I heard from one of the parents at LA that the numbers were so low on your JV team that you were calling all the kids that quit and stayed at the school, to see if they would come back and play on the JV team.

Rumor mill also stated that Yamonkio was out with a bad back. Now you have a kid back their that never played the position before. I also heard that your starting qb may not be eligble due to grades again. Not having Robert's as your principal is killing you guys. No one to doctor up the kids grades.

Goldenarm best of luck to TC also! The AZUSA AZTECS, should be fine again this season and should be right there in the end of the regular season. I'm looking forward to see what happens! Coach Sherf should have them ready!

Goldenarm, if you get a chance this season, you should come on down and watch a few Citrus College games on Saturday. There's players from all over the SGV playing their, from Amat, Rancho Cucomga, CO, Upland, San Dimas and even some players from Bassett. It's kind of nice to see a lot players from different schools. But most of all there's two players from AZUSA, that made the team and one of them is actually going to start, so who says the Montview League can't play BALL!!!

GO AZTECS!!

GO OWLS!!!

THE PRIDE IS BACK...

Not only is the team at happyrock much improved but they are taking this western team seriously, even though the coach from last year has already moved on, the school has decimated that program. The inside word is western will go back to eight man next year. Last years game was a masterful attack on a slow and overconfident team at GLADSTONE, this year we know what to expect, and will not get ambushed, on the other hand I hear western has moved out of the area and may not even get on the bus to that game, enrollment way down and need to keep thoose poor football kids till the first day of school and then they loose transfer rights.

Gladstone 24 Western 3, only if the all league kicker from western suits up.

LA Freshmen had 47 out there the last time I checked.

Sorry SGV Fans
Forget Damien and Glendora in the Sierra.
The champion will come from Chino Hills.
Be it Ayala or Chino Hills we have the best programs at both schools that weve had in 5
years .

Sad but true.

My Final Bonita Scouting Report:
There's a lot of pluses when you look at this squad, very young overall. However Fred after doing more watching and talking with Coach I agree with your statement. However they will win at least two league games and that sends them to the playoffs. If they can get it together I see an 8-2 record if everything falls into place. However with the youth and un-tried/raw talent they are a year away. I see them going 6-4. They have a huge QB in Garret Pendleton, although improved, he needs to put in a lot of work, if he steps up to the challenge they'll be good.

It looks like Bonita has a legitimate running threat for the first time in years. And I'm talking about really good, there's at least three guys that have some good speed. They have talent at receiver. On both the Defensive and Offensive lines there is only one returning starter.

DBs from what I saw looked very good, and they usually are in that defense. Receivers are big and, but again they have talent but need to work a lot harder to work back to a ball which I saw very little of if the ball was short.

They'll be toting the rock a bit this fall, however if they put it together, even with a 6-4 record they may end up going deep into the playoffs. Young team, look for them to dominate in 2010 in the realigned league.

Now...two more days till I get back to the real life oh well.

Amat Dude said:

Maybe some of these LA kids went to Amat. Amat frosh has over 90 kids. This is one of the biggest frosh squads at Amat in years. The frosh Offensive Line is huge. They look like they average around 6' 2" 250 lbs, with the biggest kid at 6'3" 275lbs. They have a ton of speedsters in the backfield and have a 6'3" receiver. There is another frosh kid that will join the team soon and this kid is 6'5" 240 lbs.

I can't believe these kids are only 14 years old. Watch out for Amat when these kids are Juniors and Seniors.

footballjunkie said:

We read about the coaching staff at Damien but who are the players to watch. How much does Damien have in the tank? Damien will have a tough road in the new Sierra league with the addition of a much improve CO program, a solid and well oiled Glendora program and a rejuvenated Chino Hills program. The top three teams go to the playoffs so who will be the odd man out in this four man race. Does anyone know who the best players will be and which underclassmen have impressed so far?

Now 200? Big differnece from 220. Maybe 195 at best.

Like I said, get a grip, get the facts then come back with some more BS.

Keep trying to pump the LBS, won't work LOL

FredJ said:

SGV Fan, that game is a scrimmage

TrueBlue said:

Well SD fan, if that is true, and the TE is sOO important, they should be able to hang with LA. I hope so. Good luck Saints, LA is going to be a WAR!

SD Fan said:

Oh Billy,

Maybe not 220 but he is 200 easy... He looks big out there....

LA ......... Not Even Close to LA of Old said:

SD Fan,

True Blue has no clue what he is talking about when he talks about LA's "speed". They have to be the slowest team in their league. A friend of mine who played at LA last season told me he was at their practice a few days ago and he counted 22 kids on the freshmen team that is just crazy. I heard they had in the high 30's. He also told me that Harwell was shocked at the numbers. Indirectly may have been the reason why he decided to step down from the HC job at LA.

Real interesting how the decline of LA football has benefited all the other local programs so quickly. They all have higher numbers in their freshmen program than the year before and all seem to have more kids than LA.

SGV Athlete said:

Believe it or not, the Gladstone vs. Western Christian game is going to turn some heads. This Gladstone team is NOT the same team they were last season. Much smarter, faster, and stronger. Don't be surprised when Gladstone makes a big run for the Montview Title...

SGV FOOTBALL said:

Fred,

I think you need to add to your list Corona centennial vs South Hills to your week 0 list for Sept 4th at Covina district field. Its not listed on the teams websites but a couple sites have it scheduled. If so this game could be better than the Tesoro Game. This is the California state champ coming to town, the team that beat power house de la salle in the finals last year. If you can confirm Fred that would be great.

Oh Billy said:

Tra isnt 220 or 230. Get a grip SD Fan

SD Fan said:

True Blue,

You must not be a true SD follower cuz if you were you would know of the 2 TE's. Tre & Justin, both about 6'1" and 220, 230. No they are not young either, they are both seniors and both played Varsity last year. maybe you should do some homework before you start blogging.

Goldenarm said:

Aztec Pride,

Best of luck to you this season.

If you get there, hopefully the Rams will as well.

Same three teams from the Miramonte are going to the playoffs. It's a two team race between LA and Wilson for last place.

Good luck on the upcoming season to all the hungry teams out there! I'm looking forward to seeing some under the radar players to step it up!

Western isnt even in our area anymore, they just cancelled their J.V.team and word is they will cancel their varsity on the 8th as soon as those kids attend their first day of school and loose thier free transfer. way to go guys what do you do for an oncore, L.O.L.

LA ......... Not Even Close to LA of Old said:

I'am not going to come out and say LA is going to lose, but they aren't as good as last years 1-9 team. Don't get me wrong, I think Wilson has less talent than last year "Gilmore" and Bonita isn't nothing special. LA might make the playoffs, it is a three team race with Bonita and Wilson. Personally I would take Bonita. I question if these LA bloggers have any clue what is going on, on the field at LA.

Choo Choo said:

Same old crap like last year...

LA fans talked crap and got beat!

hey la fans you guys better back it up this is no passing league there will be a d line at this game watch out GO VVL

LA ......... Not Even Close to LA of Old said:

Where is this speed at LA. The fastest kid on the field is going to be their qb. This kid a senior has what about 2.5 high school games under his belt. The senior running back played his sophmore year and took his freshmen and junior year off. He must weigh 150 pounds wet. This kid would have been fourth on the depth chart if their junior and senior backs weren't at South Hills and their there option has a bad back, maybe out the rest of the season. LA must have the slowest linebacker core in the valley. This team has decent size but has to be the slowest team in league by far.

Now they may beat SD, but its SD so what. LA has zero chance against SH's, CO and DR to name a few. You may see a running clock in those games.

Mid Valley Fan said:

Fred, I was wondering if Mountain View beats Workman, do they go to the playoffs, if the Lobos win the Montview and the Vikes are last in the Mission Valley?

I guess we will find out!

Hey, one more item, with the school budget crunch, did La Puente pay their light bill on time for the stadium this month? If I recall, the Vikes were dominating the Lobos the last time they were there, and God (Dog spelled backwards) turned the sun off and presto no lights!

Could History repeat itself? Probably the Vikes are lucky that way, LOL

TrueBlue said:

SD Fan: WHere R these TEs??? I haven't seen them. I didn't say they were small, just slow and young. They will be lights out again very soon. I hope the crush LA, but I just don't see it. It will be close but LA will pull away due to size and speed. Go Saints!

SD FAN said:

True Blue/LA Fan:

Wow you are going to be in for a rude awakening. SD is by far not small, 2 TE over 6', WR @ 6'3", FB that is a beast and some backs that can fly. I seen LA at Bonita passing league and they are tiny, nothing at all. Did they win a game in the "Winner's Bracket"? NOPE... As for double the kids, that is the only thing going for them. Tougher kids & bigger & faster, we will see who is on the ground crying when they get hit. SD has some tough kids on the field. As I recall, SD spanked you in the lower levels as well last year... Get ready for a wake up call, LA is a joke...

SD= 1 hit wonder. LA rolls in a very easy game.

Fred,

You guys know that I always suppose my local Montview league teams here in Baldwin park, however, Calpreps shows that the Sierra Vista game is to be played against Firebaugh on November the 12th. Can you look into that for me please ?

The only reason I ask is because I was either going to go to that game or the BP game against Nogales. I wouldn’t want to show up to an empty stadium.

Yikes !

SGV FOOTBALL said:

hey,

Don't hold out when and where will SH be playing centennial?

U R right Fred... said:

Workman will be the surprise team of the valley. Senior loaded and will score alot of points this season.

Big G said:

To Trueblue I am simply going to say this, San Dimas coaches do not need the Lou Holtz Chalk Talk because they are blessed enough to be graced with the DaneTrain Pep Talks which helps them chug along through the season. Rude awakening coming for anyone at Los Altos thinking that San Dimas is down this year. Just remember one thing, if your stuck on the tracks you might be liable to be run over!!!!!

CHOOOOOO CHOOOOOOOOOOOOO

hey said:

south hills plays a practice game CORONA CENTENNIAL . I wouldn't mind watching tha game instead of these that game will be played at covina district field sept.4th

TrueBlue said:

I agree with LA fan completely. San Dimas is young and slow. LA is not the old LA, but they are still double the school size, tougher kids, bigger and faster. I love SD, but I don't see it happening. If SD pulls this out it is all coaching, but I don't think even Lou Holtz's chalk talk would help them with this one.

The best game for Week 0 is Damien vs Rancho Cucamonga.

What will Gano's team do when the big lights come on. Damien has had a reputation of being soft at times and Gano's LA teams have historically been among the toughest when the game is on the line so will the Spartans reflect that game time grit.

The practices have been spirited but when the team falls behind in a game will the team rally or scatter. My guess is the Spartans, hungry and desperate for leadership will listen to their coaches and see every game as one step closer to their goal of being Champions one day.

The Spartan team will have the spot light on them all year. Lucky for them they have a season staff that relishes teh spotlight and expects to win every time they take the field, and at Damien that hasn't happened in a while.

Best of luck.
