Weekend Conversation: It's a wide open race for the Tribune's football player of the year award
Everyone wants to win a championship, but one of the most prestigious honors is the Tribune's football player of the year award. Who will that be this year? Remember, this isn't an award based on who performs the best at the next level, or who has the most talent. It's not about who plays in the toughest division, though tougher schedules certainly help. Look, Sierra Vista players won in back-to-back years in 1995-96. There are past winners from Bassett, Northview, Baldwin Park and Azusa. It's for anyone. It's for the player who combines a spectacular individual season with a great team season. Then we consider the competition, and make the best choice. It's our High School Heisman. Names that instantly jump out are Charter Oak's Adam Muema. West Covina's Ricky Johnson. Bishop Amat's Darian Johnson. Glendora's Wallace Gonzales. Walnut's Leonard Rhodes. Rowland's Michael Ball. South Hills' Geoffrey Vaughns. There could be sleepers like Arroyo sophomore quarterback Steven Rivera, or what if South Hills' Jordan Canada becomes eligible. You never know what's going to happen, but one thing is certain, if you make this list, you're among the very best in Valley history.

This is probably one of the best mentions of this topic I've seen in quite a while. It's obvious that your knowledge of the subject is deep and this made for a very interesting read.

Mr. Sucka
Great piece on the pomona boys! Like your motavation and excitement over there.
So many people miss the concept of getting all the kids involved, by comparing ability and status. Sometimes makes other kids not compete due to insecurities. Hope you get all of them on the field, your doing a great job over there!
Keep in mind folks, the worst football player is way better than any gang member!
GOOD LUCK POMONA
KEEP THE TREND ALIVE COACH!!!
*DARRIAN LEWIS
POMONA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
CLASS OF 2010
COULD END UP BEING PLAYER OF THE YEAR. HE IS SET FOR THE D1 LEVEL. HE IS STRESS FREE AND JUST CAN GO OUT AND HAVE FUN PLAYING FOOTBALL
Talk about it in Football Recruiting Board
Sleeper athlete prospect Darrin Lewis (6-1, 170, 4.57) from Pomona, Calif., has been flying under the radar this recruiting season, but that has worked in the favor of one coach that has a lot of contacts in the area because this coach scooped him up before the word got out about his ability.
Lewis was benefited by the arrival of John Brown, who was a longtime assistant coach at Pomona and now he has returned as head coach. Brown dusted off his rolodex and called some old friends. One of them liked what he saw in Lewis, offered him and Lewis accepted.
"Darrin got an offer from Eastern Michigan and he committed to them last night," Brown said. "The reason why he committed early to Eastern Michigan is he wants to concentrate on his senior season and on his books.
"Eastern Michigan head coach Ron English has taken a player of mine wherever he has been," Brown said. "He received a good in Darrin.
"I have coached three players who have made it to the NFL and Darrin reminds me of them," Brown said. "He really reminds me of Husain Abdullah in size, speed and football IQ.
"Husain played for Washington State and is now playing for the Minnesota Vikings," Brown said. "Like Husain, Darrin can do a lot of things on the football field.
"Darrin will be our starting quarterback, but will also play some safety and cornerback for us," Brown said. "He is being recruited to play corner, but they will put him in the short line to the field.
"Meaning wherever he will get on the field first is where he will play. He's a pure athlete."
Brown has other players at Pomona that he feels will be playing on Saturdays.
"My goal at Pomona is to get four kids to the D-I level," Brown said. "I know I have two and hope to have two more."
Rivals.com will have stories on all the rising players at Pomona.
Lewis earned all-league as a junior from his defensive back spot as a junior.
Is this award for the SGV only (not SF, IE, OC?), or is it for the kid who turns heads and crushes his opponents week in and week out? I'm a die hard SC fan brothas, but sometimes the players who rack up the on lookers are not SC talent, because of size, speed or previous year's stats. But they are ballers still the same.
Fred
There is only one guy that Pete Carroll has on the top of his depth chart and its Malcolm Jones from Oaks Christian.Ricky Johnson is not even close to being a D-1 runner.on a scale of 1-10 RJ is a 3+.End of story.
throw a college football thread on here fred... ill talk for days
If anyone is interested, CO's Blue and Gold scrimmage is today from 11 to 3 at Charger Stadium.
What a joke? You gotta think, there are normally only 3 schools mentioned in these blogs, BA, SH or CO. We have over 20 schools in the SGV im sure. So the POY goes to one of the players on 1 of those 3 teams, hands down.
I cant think of 2 players at Walnut, 1 at DB, 4 at DR, 1 at SD, 2 at NV, 2 at Damien, 1 at Muir, 3 at Arcadia, 3 at WC and the list goes on. But popular opinion wins the POY for the tribune. No Offense Fred..
USC generally gets the best RBs in S. Cali, RJ isn't close to being near the best in S. Cali...
dragon6,
How can SC be looking at him when his coach mike doesnt even enter stats for him. SC is looking at guys like Anthony Barr, and Dietrich Riley. Dont get to ahead of yourself just because he went to the usc camp.
Ricky Johnson
RJ (Ricky Johnson) is going to have a big year. Coach Carroll at sc has his eyes on this guy. He has the SC size and the SC speed. RJ and the rest of the WC Bulldogs will be the team to beat.

I tackled BILL STONE once! Twenty-nine years later, Im still hurt!!!!!
LIving Legend,
I agree with you on youre point that we need a big win. Our only shot at being considered is if we put up big numbers against Ranch Cucamonga and beat them convincingly. Rancho is currently seeded # 9 in the D1 state championship, plus we need to go undeafeated and win CIF first and foremost.
7 more days until the season opener, come on come on hurry up!!!
Sorry CO, you have a great team but you need a signature win to get to state and I am not sure you can get one from the schedule that you have. If Oceanside goes undefeated they will be in the state game, just a different beast.
This years tribune player of the year is not on the list. I will not spoil the surprise, yet! hint, he is in the surprisingly montview league! watch out!
Watch out for Amat's Darian Johnson, he's gonna have a break out year. He'll see lots of action on offense this year as well as defense. He's well coached by his mentor Daylon McCutcheon. Oregon is heavily recruiting him and he will definitely make a huge impact on both sides of the line this year.
Even though Chino Hills High is in the inland empire, they play Mayfair,Damien, DB and Glendora. They have at least 4 legit kids that could take that award. They should be considered.
There's talk every year about who is the "pre-season Player of the Year" at every level. Remember the recent hubub nationally because Tim Tebow wasn't the unanimous preseason 1st team QB in the SEC. Relax!
Adam Muema will be the top contender. Hopefully he stays healthy and runs wild this year.
CO we need another CIF ring this year, maybe even a state appearnce.
CO you know.
Way to early to give an opinion..
Stupid thread..
Paper sales down?
Hopefully all of these players have their best performances on the gridiron this season! If you get any video on any of these recruits...

once "Awsome Adam" gets his 3,000 rushing yards this season it will be declared :)
Bill Stone P.O.Y. 1980 attended Royal Oak H.S. not Charter Oak H.S.
Bishop Amats Jay Anderson and Jerry McClanahan will be in this running you can count on that.
