SAN DIMAS - The first day of class at San Dimas High School ended with the tragic news that a recently graduated student and former athlete had died in a car crash on Monday.
Eddie Miles, 17, was killed after the 2001 GMC van he was driving rear-ended a semi-truck on the west 60 Freeway at 9:50 a.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner's spokeswoman Sandy Fatland said. The van then veered right into a guard rail and toppled down an embankment just west of Grove Avenue in Ontario, Fatland said.
The Ontario Fire Department responded and used the Jaws of Life to reach Miles, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Fatland said.
Miles, a reserve catcher and pitcher, helped the Saints win a CIF-Southern Section Division IV championship last season. The Saints defeated Torrance 4-2 in the June 6 championship at Angel Stadium. Nearly 400 people gathered in silence Monday night in front of the San Dimas High campus to mourn the death of their friend and fellow athlete.
Thomas Jenson, a former baseball teammate who graduated with Miles, said he was shocked by the news. "He was smart - the perfect kid. He had no enemies, made friends with everyone," said Jenson. "You can see by how many people showed up that a lot of people loved him and are praying for him tonight." The somber mourners comforted each other as the tears poured out. Many in the crowd signed messages to Miles and his family on a large card that read "Eddie M. you'll be missed."
"He's one of my best friends and he was taken away too early," said Kevin Ponzo, a former baseball teammate. "It's true that the best go first. He's the only one who can make you laugh when you're losing 5-0." San Dimas High School baseball coach Mike Regan spoke with Miles' former teammates after learning the news during the day. Most responded with shock, Regan said. "They don't know what to say," Regan said. "Eddie was just a wonderful kid, a great student, a team guy. Everybody loved Eddie."
Miles played baseball all four years at San Dimas High and during his time was willing to do anything to help the team, Regan said. "He is one of those kids who is a great team guy and always did whatever we asked him to do," Regan said. "I am just devastated."
News of Miles' death didn't reach students at San Dimas High until after school let out at noon. Miles also played football, maintained high grades and planned to attend Cal Poly Pomona in the fall, school Principal Michael Kelly said. "He was an excellent student and a wonderful young man," Kelly said. Additional school counselors and psychologists will be on campus this week to help those dealing with the tragedy, Kelly said. "High school students have a difficult time dealing with these things," Kelly said. "For many it is their first time dealing with a loss."

I will be at the services for Eddie…Very, very close to Eddie’s family… I'll be anonymous, just doing my job.
I will hear, listen to, feel and experience the sadness & pain first hand from beginning to end… Everything…, and when I’m alone I’ll cry like a baby.
I’m a single father of five; I can’t imagine the pain of loosing any one of my children.
I’ll be professional, it’s my job.
I’ve read all that was written about Eddie… I truly hope I can keep it together but I know I wont, I just hope my dark glasses can hide my emotions.
A young life should never be taken so soon.

It is with a heavy heart and sincere sorrow that my family extends it's warmest thoughts and prayers to the Miles family at this most trying of times.
Mr. & Mrs. Miles, please know that you both did a wonderful job of raising a very polite and caring young man that will be missed by all he came in contact with.
Our thoughts and prayers!
Fitzgerald Family
Does anyone know when and where the funeral services will be?
Thanks
God bless the Miles family. Everyone's hearts go out to you, and for the man who described him in the story as a back up catcher, shame on you. It doesn't matter if he was the stud pitcher or the water boy, he was an 18 year old person who lost his life. Get your priorities in order.
William J Smith, San Dimas, CA
What a great loss. Eddie was just with our family for a short time while here in Indiana for the Colt World Series baseball tourney, but he left an everlasting impression. Like others who have posted before, his smile, warm personality and huge heart will forever be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Miles Family. I will never forget sitting and visiting with Grandpa and Grandma Miles - you two are special too and my heart breaks when I think of how much you must be hurting. ((hugs)) from your Indiana Family.
Eddie: Me Steven and Matt are very very lucky to have met you in Hawaii my friend. We shared some of your last days in paradise. I will forever cherish those moments. Almost every day and night we got our group of "the Ninjas" together and had some of the greatest times.
To Eddies Family: I want you to know that your child Eddie was one of the nicest kids ive known. Right when I met him me and my two other friends knew he was a great person and extremely kind. In the few days we knew him we grew to be good friends. Infact many times our group which included Myself, Matt and Steven from Bellingham Washington, Jeff, Brandon, Dennis, and George, we talked about someday traveling to California just to meet up because we had loved Eddie and the group as a whole so much. We spent every day having such wonderful and memorable times in Maui. I Know Eddie is in a better place because he was such a good man. His time on earth was not long enough, for I wish I had the chance to see him again.
I Know that Eddie spent his last week having an amazing time. And I am privaleged to have spent that time with him.
I pray for you.
Love Sig, Steven, and Matt
Let everyone join in prayer for this family. God grant them strength and love during this most difficult time.
I was there at the Vigil last night, it was amazing how the SD students come together like a family!!!! My Heart Aches for the Miles Family!!!!
May God Bless the Miles family!
It's with shock & sadness in our hearts that we say our thoughts & prayers are with the Miles Family at this time. A true loss to the SDLL Family, the SDHS Family, and our community in general.
How truly sad and overwhelming. Although our kids all go in different directions in high school, these are all our sons. And as a community, we have helped cheer and celebrate their lives in all their victories on and off the field. Eddie was definitely one of ours sons here in San Dimas and he will be missed tremendously.
To the Miles Family: God Bless you in your time of need. We are so sorry for your loss but I have faith he is in the best of hands.
Aaron, I only saw Eddie play once and didn't know the kid, and from 800 miles away, tears are in my eyes reading the comments as well. From what everyone has told me and what I'm reading, he was an outstanding young man.
Honestly after reading everyone's comment I am crying...I just got taken back in time to 2nd March, 2007. The night before Kevin Normington had been killed in a car accident. He touched the community of La Verne and the people that went to school with him in so many ways. I grew up with him, he and I were in the same class. So my condolences go out to the Miles family, and well as the SDHS community.
From the South Hills Coaching Staff: We send out our thoughts and prayers to the Miles family and the Saints family, bless each and every one of you!
I do not know the specifics, But i do know for a fact that Eddie was driving the Alta dena company truck of his parents business Altadena Dairy, For unknown reasons Eddie rear-ended another vehicle, So sad and too young!!
This morning at around 10:15am, I was on the 60 East heading towards Riverside. As I approached Ontario, I could see a fire truck, ambulance, police and a white truck over the edge, on the 60 West with traffic backed up for miles. I looked over to the accident and wondered how bad it was.
At around 5:30pm, my daughter told me about the death of her friend Eddie Miles that died in a car accident, but she didn't have any other information.
At around 9:00pm, I looked up the name Eddie Miles in news posts and read where the accident occured... that's when I realized what I had seen earlier in the day.
That is extremely sad news. My heart goes out to the family. I saw San Dimas beat Bishop Amat and saw the passion that people talked about in the kid.
To the family, friends, and San Dimas High School family: I am truly sorry to hear about the tragic event that took place this morning concerning one of your baseball players. May God Bless his soul and keep you comforted in your time of need. You will be in our prayers.
May the lord be with you all,
From:

I truly understand what you are saying. I asked God today why Eddie? Did he really need him in heaven today? We personally have known this young man since little league and played together on teams that his dad coached.
I cannot even imagine the pain this family is going through. Dean, Cindy, Dennis, the entire community WILL be praying for you...
Eddie was the best of the best! Always smiling, Always polite, always humble, always supporting his football & baseball teams, always working to the best of his abilities, always going to school, always just being the A TRUE FINE YOUNG MAN!
I hope every kid from the past to present show up tonight to HONOR THIS YOUNG MAN'S LIFE!
GOD BLESS YOU EDDIE!
Our family sends their condolences and prayers to the Miles Family.
Eddie was a very well liked kid in the community and will be missed immensely.
It remains a mystery why we are denied the light of boys like this.
Miles Family - Walt, Becky, & Kids, Grandpa John and Rachel Martinez would like to send our condolences, and prayers. This is a tragedy that really makes one question why. He was a great kid, and you are a great family. Seek out all the ones who love and support you in this time of need.
God Bless
San Dimas,
I will pray for you. Words CAN NOT express the hurt I am feeling .It is a true SHAME when ANYBODY loses their life let alone a young man.May god look after this young mans family in their time of sorrow.
TM
Eddie was definately one of a kind. He was a great guy with the best personality and will be missed greatly and never forgotten. It really hit everyone hard today, including me. Although I wasnt close to him or rarely talked to him, I still went to school and graduated with him and with our Senior class we were all like family. He will be in many thoughts and prayers.
jcaz, i've said this before.."i think i would simply lose my mind...literally...if that ever happened in my life".
part of getting old is burying your friends. where does the time go?
bonita, san dimas, damien and glendora have all been hit by the recent tragedy of losing kids way too young.
all have been senseless...
what a terrible burden to bare...my prayers are with the parents tonight
the irony really hits home when bishop amat just had their memorial service for their fallen lancer....and i'm sure those in attendance will agree...the pain never goes away
i lost my one of my best friends over almost 30 years ago this feb...and it still haunts me.
i just hope no one adds to the family's pain like they tried to do with Reyne and Amat family.
Every time I hear something like this, it really hits me hard.
To tell you the truth, it makes me angry that a person so young has lost his life. In fact, often it can shake even the very foundation of a person’s faith to see tragedy in those that are often the most innocent, our children.
To have a child die so young is simply horrible, but what makes it even so much more harder is to experience that that as parent.
You know, we all live our life’s hoping to have found the right person that will share with us the many gifts that come with raising a family.
Many of us hope to grow old and to some day see our kids live a health and productive life. But, understand on thing and that is that, for a parent to out live their children, is perhaps the most difficult thing imaginable for them.
I can't even imagine how hard it must be for this family right now.
God bless the Miles family in this trying time.
Yes, friends, teammates and family will gather this evening at sunset at San Dimas High School to honor the memory of Eddie Miles. Eddie was an outstanding young man. He was kind and thoughtful to everyone he knew and met. We will miss him deeply. We extend our condolences to the Miles family.
Very Tragic story. Remember everyone life is short enjoy every day you wake up. You never know when it might be your last. Fred in the body of the article you need to change Chargers to Saints. Just helping ya out! God bless his family during this difficult time.
I am very saddened to hear the news about Eddie Miles, but was wondering if you accidentally called the SD Saints the Chargers by mistake.
