Smudge Pot begins a week early, pizza-eating fundraiser at Michealangelo’s on Friday

The second annual pizza-eating fundraiser between San Dimas and Bonita high school football players is on Friday at Michealangelo’s Pizza in San Dimas at 3:30 p.m.

A week later the football teams collide in the 38th annual Smudge Pot game between the rival schools, which is one of the most-attended games in the Valley.

Friday’s pizza-eating fundraiser is for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides full scholarship grants and family counseling to surviving children of special operations personnel who die in operational or training missions and immediate financial assistance to wounded special operations personnel and their families.

Last year players from both teams raised $4,904.68, and donations at the game raised an additional $1,854.35.

This year $1 from each ticket purchased for the Smudgepot game on Oct. 9 will go to the charity.

“It’s a great rivalry, the kids always look forward to it,” Podley said. “In the spirit of the rivalry, it’s great to see the kids come together and raise money for such a worthwhile cause.”
