CIF state appeal for Canada brothers on Friday
We have learned that the California state appeal for South Hills senior Jordan Canada and his sophomore brother Jamie will be heard on Friday afternoon. Both players were declared ineligible by CIF-SS officials after their change of residence transfer from Duarte to South Hills was denied by CIF-SS officials, who ruled it was an "athletically motivated," transfer.

Oh what'd you expect. The DHS principal is a MOUNTAIN VIEW VIKING ALUM....MOUNTAIN VIEW...comes naturally doesn't it for that punk of an hoodrat ese
ie football fan,
It has nothing to do with "claiming jesus" to get to another school. They can GO to whatever school they want. It's the varsity eligibility that they're restricting. And I don't think participating in varsity football is what our founding fathers had in mind when it comes to "the pursuit of happiness". An extra million dollars would make me pretty happy... but it's not my "inalienable right"
Everyone has a right to take a stand.. but also needs to be ready for the consequences when they do.
The pursuit of happiness would/could include football. It's a double standard. If the boy claimed Jesus they could go to another school. The young men didn't feel comfortable at the school so they left. It does not matter the reason. The mother should have shut up, but she didn't and now its a big deal. This would not be an issue if the AD or someone had not told, but now that they have told Karma is a mother.
They will not have a good year, and may go 0-10. I applaud Mr. Saunders for taking the job. I hope it works out for hom. As for the players that left, they probably wished they would have stayed to avoid all the bs. But they took a stand to support what they believed was unfair treatment of their coach (right or wrong, that was their belief and stand).
SGV Fan-no one has said anyone CAN'T live where they want. No one has even said they can't go to school wherever they want. They haven't even said they can't play football.
So which Amendment says "life, liberty, and the pursuit of varsity football."
Does anyone know has the Canada family set up a defense fund. Where do I go. I would like to help.
To get it straight,
Looks like to me that you have attended the same Civics class and Civil rights class that the Administrators at DHS attended.
I know my family and all of us have a right to live anywhere we want to. My children also have a right to attend any school we choose. They also have a right to participate in any school activity. I think this is what the sgv fan is talking about.
The U.S Constitution gives us all a right to live anywhere we choose no matter what. When the CIF state declares or the courts find that the Canada have violated no rules or laws and declares them eligible. What you have left is the question why, and I hope the truth comes out.
We read every day that there is a race relation problem between the community of Monrovia and Duarte. One must ask the question is the Community the only place or do we need to look into the other areas to find this same problem.
What specific "U.S. Constitutional Rights" do you think were violated? I'm trying to find "the right to play football" in my old Civics book and can't locate it? Hilarious!
To Get it Straight,
I believe that I do have it straight and you do not.
If you read the State CIF newsletter, which explains the state CIF, transfer appeal process The difference between the local section process and that of the state process is the following. The local process deal strictly with what is submitted by the schools and the applicant in writing..
The state hearing process requests both parties to attend the hearing,.The state hearing panel may ask and listens to questions on both sides before reaching their decision. The Appellant does have the right to have witnesses attend and have a right to questioned the witnesses and the accusing party.
The Canada representative did request DHS Athletic Director to attend. She refused.
I only hope that the Canada brothers become eligible this week. Then, I hope the Canada family pursue thru legal means and force the Duarte High School administration to answer why. Why did they violate the Canada family U.S. Constitutional Rights?
SGV fan would like to know.
SGV fan,
You so don't know the information...how sad you are. The AD and or the adminstration doesn't have to show to CIF. They sent their information to CIF and CIF takes the information they need. There are CIF Rules and regualtions and Duarte is sticking to them. Sorry that the transfers didn't want to listen to the administration before they all left, they were forewarned. It isn't Duarte's fault that someone got into these transfers' ears and told them that everything would be okay if they transfered, that someone doesn't know CIF rules.
Thw flawed process continues. The accusing party, the athletic Director, Duarte High School does not show up to CIF state appeals hearing..
In fact no one from Duarte High School cared to showup. Sorry Jordan and Jamie to bad your representative could not asked your accusers to prove their charges. Apparetly they have no proof.
Wardell Crutchfield, jr. is the only player eligible.
When Der Fuhrer Staunton was faced with the question of why the Crutchfield kid (& whoever else left duroc high n r currently playing for whoever) was eligible and los Canadas weren't he just stared at everybody. Nobodys listening, everyones turning a ****en blind eye ...wake up n smell the g**d*** coffee its a grand ****en conspiracy!!! Doublespeak orwellian grande!
I was there
Every circumstance is different. Do we know if the other players who transfered to BP moved or just transferred. It makes a big difference
Fred J ,
Any word on the hearing this afternoon. Could have bearings on Wallace at AMAT.
Just an update, the appeal was heard this afternoon, but a decision is not expected today, more likely sometime next week. If we hear anything sooner, we will pass it on.
New York,
Agreed. That's why I stated right or wrong. Definitely don't like the new wording of the rule. Tough topic. Do we allow "open season" on transfers. If we did - would bloggers be all over schools like us... or would it actually help balance the scales? Bad schools, with bad programs, in bad districts would lose kids left and right.. but maybe that's good and it would force them to improve .... or they'd just continue to not care and get worse. Tough.
Joe Amat,
Very true that those are the rules. The complication comes in enforcing the rules and proving guilt, or in this case the burden of having to prove innocense. This burden of proof (how can somebody disprove this type of accusation) placed on the accused is inconsistent with legal precedent.
Aaron,
Why not just allow all the kids involved to be eligible? Why err on the side of declaring them all ineligible? Do their GPA's qualify? If so, let them play.
If Jordan becomes eligible and the kids that transferred to Baldwin Park don't I hope CIF gets sued into the ground. There's no reason why Jordan should be declared eligible and the players that transferred to Baldwin Park remain ineligible.
tcbruin,
There are no restrictions on the transfer. Any kid can transfer to any school that will take them. CIF has no jurisdiction on that at all. So if it's academics, or playing in the band, that we're worried about - never an issue. What is at issue is a players athletic eligibility and, right or wrong, that's what CIF rules on.
Just Wondering,
Where does the SCHOOL/ACADEMIC portion come into play for these students?
IF these[or any] student athletes were violin players there would be no issues with a transfer of this nature. Since these ARE athletes, there ARE rules in place to govern transfers.
Remember, these are STUDENT[1ST]/athletes(or any OTHER EXTRA carricular activity)[2nd].
If the stories that I hear are true about the Canada's they are a couple of good kids. The mom made some comment to the newspaper about moving into the district so that the boys could go to South Hills. If that's true that is a move based on athletics. The other part of the story is that they had to move out of their house and have the paperwork to prove it. The lesson? Parents don't talk to the news about your potential living arrangment. My next question is, Would their be a problem if they moved into the say Walnut or Diamond Bar area? What if they moved to the Diamond Ranch area? Would we still be having this discussion? For CIF's sake, I sure hope so. My gut says that Duartes' administration is trying to stick it to these kids for leaving. Is anyone taking a close look at what their motivation is? If the senior Canada went back to Duarte would he be able to play this year? Would the coach want him if he could?
I hope they don't become eligible, I really hope they don't. They don't deserve it and I am sick and tired of all these transfers. Deny them so everyone else can learn.
I have a question and maybe someone from the CIF can answer:
When a family is preparing to buy a new home or relocate to a new area and they have children. In most cases they ask about the local school district and find out how their school is rated. If they are interested in extra curricular activities including sports they inquire about these program. If the school meets their standards, they purchase or rent a home or apartment and move in.
What happens if the schools rating drop, the new principal, decided a new direction, the school or area is no longer safe. Extra curricular activities, which you as a parent care about for yor children, are cut back. The decision to change was made by the school with no input by the parents or community.
Does the CIF feel as a parent you have no right to move and put your children back into the learning environment that you sign up for when you moved into the school district?
I have worked for many public school districts for many years and have seen some of the best district fail and yes, when this happen enrollment drops; The CIF should not punish the students or parents for the failure of the school or school district. And they should not punish the performing school district for providing the best learning environment, which includes extra curricular activities. Why should the CIF take the opposite position then that of the Federal and State Education Department who rewards top performing school.
I understand that they are trying to provide a fair system. I also believe that school and coaches should no be allowed to recruit players from other schools. But I do believe in the rights of parents to raise their children. The way to provide a fair playing environment is to place the top performing school, public or private in the same league. It’s that easy, it also takes income, out of the decision process.
Fred
Why do you persist in giving South Hills Ink when you know that they are cheaters.I just don't get it? Fred I bet you thought OJ was Innocent
To Begging,
One can only assume that you favor the players whose families have enough money to send their children to private school, pay for personal trainers and the best camps money can buy.
The real world is most families today are struggling. There finances dictate their circumstances and actiona.
I don't fault those parents who can afford and want the best for their children. The same goes for those parent who can not afford best but try to provide the best.
The love is the same.
So try to get off your high horse and understand the single parents and low income families have feeling too. They love there children the same and care about their future.
To Mr. Right,
Private Schools such as Oaks Christian, Servite, Bishop Amat can get players from wherever they want, thats why it is called Private. CO, SH, Los Altos for years have won using out of district players, it is no secret. CIF has now enforced the rule and now the Bit--ing is coming out. Deal with it. These two Duarte kids should not be able to play at SH. I hope it does not get overturned.
What a shock! South Hills with another transfer! WOW! I am shocked!
It is nice to hear that the Canada brothers will finally get there chance to prove their innocence, Our legal system says you are innocence until proven guilty but in the CIF system you are guilty first and must prove your innocence,
The Canada family moved from the City of Duarte, which is their right given to them by the U S Constitution. We all have a right to relocate and live anywhere we chose for whatever reason. The boys did not leave Duarte High School to get more media recognition, they had plenty of attention at DHS, They did not leave for a guaranteed position, they played their desired position and played both ways. They did not leave because they were looking for DI offers; Jordan already received offers at DHS. They left Duarte High School because their family had to move from their home.
There was no guarantee that they would be a starting position at any school where they attended. The boys had to tryout for a position at their new school just like anyone else. In fact, I understand prior to being declared ineligible by the CIF, Jaime had been playing on the new schools Junior Varsity team. Not on the Varsity which he played on at DHS.
For Duarte High School and the CIF to declare their move a Athletic motivated make no sense. I believe the real reason is that Duarte High School administration is trying to put the blame on a failed decision to go in a different direction on the Canada Brothers and Mother.
I was hoping that someone in the Duarte School District would step up and understand that a successful football season and team is not made up of just a few good players.
Whats needed are Athletes, coaches and support staff, strong alumni and booster programs make up a successful football team and football organization
Duarte High School was working towards this goal before the Administrators made their decision to go a different direction. Duarte’s program was beginning to show recovery but still lack school support and still needed more alumni and booster help.
No one should blame the Canada brothers or the other players who left, The football players gave their best for Duarte High School, it appears to me that the school let them down. Players graduate, family relocate, situations change in high school football. It is left up to the coach to adjust to these situations.
The Canada family has move, the school needs to get over it and move on.
Coach Sanders is trying to do his job and can be successful in time, But only if the school administrators do their job and support the football program. The Principal and Athletic Director made there decision, they took the football programs future is in there hands, this years losses are theirs.
Teams have rebuilding years, and this year is Duarte year, for no other reason except for Duarte decision to go a different direction. Whatever that means, we will never know.
Unless thing change in the attitude of support for the football program at Duarte High School, The next Headline will read. COACH SANDERS RESIGNS,
May God be with you Jordan and Jamie and all the players at Duarte High,
May God bless Jordan and Jamie and all the athletes this year.
come on let the kids play ball
99 out of 100 state appeals on average succeed in favor of the petitioning party.
Dave Peddos
Jamie should be eligible however Jordan should not. The only player eligible from Duarte is Wardell Crutchfield, jr. So if Jordan is declared eligible than so should all of the kids at Balwin Park, however since the Canada's mother interfered I wouldn't be surprised if both her children have to sit this season.
And I guess that hasn't been the case at Charter Oak, Los Altos, Bishop Amat, Long Beach Poly, Mater Dei, Oaks Christian and any other school that's successful? Lets get this right, players and their moms and pops go to where the best coaching is, so part of coaching is developing the reputation that you can coach, all those longtime coaches that continually lose, well, there's a reason for that, and it's just players.
Just in time for league. You know SH is petitioning hard for the overule. South Hills will need Jamie and Jordan Canada to compete in the San Antonio league with the uprise of Rowland, Walnut and West Covina. Bogans a good coach but he does need his recruitment players year in and year out to keep face and status...He is a good coach not a Great coach. Player transfers have been holding SH together for some years now.
