Cross Country: Area runners off to good start

Trib Area XC Roundup - Week 1: Saturday, September 12

After a long summer of hard, hot, and hopefully productive training, many of the SGV Tribune are Cross Country Teams swung into action. Last year's top teams, the St. Lucy's girls and Glendora boys both look to be stronger than last year. Individually, all of last year's top girls are (potentially) back, while three of last year's top five were underclassmen.

Fastback Shootout - Mt. Sac: Arroyo and Azusa represented the east SGV in this kickoff meet that only uses 2 miles of the famous Mt. Sac XC course - taking out one lap of the Valley Loop and Reservoir. Arroyo was led by junior Laura Gazca (13:36) and senior Efren Alcala (11:08) and freshman Jesus Ocana (11:17), while Azusa was paced seniors Israel Orosco (11:00) and Marlynna Molina (14:27).

Bronco Invite - Prado Park, Chino: six area schools began their season on this slow, gently rolling 5 kilometer course. St. Lucy's and Glendora wasted no time in showing their ambition with the Tartans winning the boys title and the Regents finishing second to a strong El Modena team. Rosemead, Damien, Diamond Bar, and Diamond Ranch also took part

Junior Anthony Castro (16:29) led the Tartans, who placed three in the top 10 (Kelly Hernandez-Jr-6th and Austin Mendoza-Soph-7th) and all five scorers in the top 25, this despite missing their 2nd best returning runner who was taking the SAT. Junior Alexander Harvey of Diamond Bar was 9th.

Glendora junior Lauren Justus was the top area finisher with her 19:15 for second place. She was joined in the top 10 by St Lucy's juniors Taylor Hebb (5th) and Marissa Horton (6th) and soph Kristy Hebb (8th) along with Rosemead senior Brittnie Munoz (9th).

Don Bosco Tech Invite - Santa Fe Dam, Irwindale: Eleven area schools lined up on this flat, 3 mile course, made even faster this year by a course change necessitated by the fire crews using the parks as a staging area. This was a strong meet, with over fifty schools taking part. Los Altos (1:23:02) at 12th were the area's top boys finishers while the South Hills girls (1:42:02) were 10th.

The meet was conducted in heats by grade level. Top 10 finishers were Seniors Miguel Gonzalez-9th (Los Altos), Kristen Galvez-6th (Rowland) and Reina Sotelo-7th (Los Altos); Juniors Jonathan Flores-8th (South Hills), Vanessa Lopez-7th (Rowland) and Nicolette Garcia-9th (Los Altos); Soph Joshua Sanchez-6th (Los Altos); and Freshmen Felipe Tapis-2nd and David Galvez-3rd from Rowland.

Top Performers

Both the Bronco and Bosco courses were different this year, making comparisons even harder, so we'll just present two lists.

The Rosemead Invite kicks off at RHS at 5:30, with 10 local schools competing on the mostly flat three mile course, with the later races going off under the lights.

Brittnie Munoz from the hosts and Jayson Perez (South El Monte) return as champs from the '08, and their teams will be joined by Walnut, Baldwin Park, La Puente, Arroyo, El Monte, West Covina, Glendora, and Duarte.

Eight local schools will race in the gigantic Woodbridge Invitation in Irvine. The local effort on this very fast 3 mile course will be led by CIF Div. III #5 ranked St. Lucy's, who will racing in the Sweepstakes race in the evening.

The Regents will be joined earlier in the day by Bishop Amat, Covina, Damien, Diamond Bar, Diamond Ranch, Bonita, and San Dimas. Last year in this meet, St. Lucy's and the Glendora boys both had very strong performances.

But this year, the Glendora boys (plus one girl) will be the SGV's only reps at the Mt. Carmel Invite, held on the national championship XC course at San Diego's Balboa Park. The Tartans will face San Diego's top teams along with many top ranked SS sevens.
