Breaking News: Canada's denied again
The CIF-state appeals board ruled against South Hills' Jordan and Jamie Canada, who have not played football for the Huskies, and who will likely sit out the remainder of the season unless a family attorney files an injunction through the state courts and is successful, which is considered a longshot. The brothers were hoping the state appeals board would overturn the CIF-Southern Section's decision to declare them ineligible after transferring from Duarte High School to South Hills. The Canada's mother, Gala Canada, moved with her sons to the South Hills high school district over the summer and filed a "change of address" request through the school in hopes of her sons becoming eligible.
However, that request was denied by CIF after Duarte officials filed paperwork with the CIF-SS offices claiming the Canada's left to South Hills for "athletically motivated," reasons.

I can't believe some of you are still blaming Duarte's administration, oh, but I guess you are the people who also blame teachers for failing your kid and you blame other people for your short comings instead of taking responsibility. The administartion isn't to blame for the ineligibility of the Canada brother. If you want to blame the administarton for anything point the finger at them for following the CIF blue book and for standing up for the kids who were left from the Crutchfield after lash. Good for Duarte to stand their ground and follow some rules, we all know their ex-coach didn't. Start by pointing the finger at parents who think there is greener grass else where. Sure maybe true, but following the rules of CIF before you jump the fence to the other side. The Duarte administration is following rules not making them up and not acting like scorned lovers (come on SGV for 30 yrs). Also, for those of you who don't know this, there were 7 transfers, not just the Canada brothers and each one was questioned it was nothing against the Canadas or SH. If you are talking about this specific issue, then look at the mother if you are pointing blame. She opened her mouth to the press and had no idea how she was putting her kids out there to be questioned. Don't blame CIF and don't blame Duarte, blame the parents who don't teach morals to their kids about showing loyalty and integrity. Take responsibility people for your own actions and know that lies come back and bite you in the ass, or I guess you can say scholarship.
First and last. Recuiting does exist. It always has and always will. Huskybeliever, in your comment you said " bad coaches are the ones that complain. Not true. There are coaches that have cheated to just compete or win. Colony for example, they have a player from Roosevelt of Corona who was there best back last year. But somehow has two residences. Second example, after Matt Koffler left Rosemead about 5 plus years ago for Artesia High school, he was fired as head coach for illegal players. So everyone, please quit living in FANTASYLAND! You have no idea what actually goes on behind closed doors.
If you are a high school admin. The best interest of the kid should kids always come first right? Didn't Duarte file the paperwork that has caused this issue? Did they investigate why this family was leaving their district? Seems to me like they are out to screw these 2 kids like a scorned lover. They fired a coach who was by all accounts doing a good job. Then they were going to try to hold those kids hostage until they found someone to coach. I'm sure that I'm missing some of the story. (Maybe a news reporter should investigate this). It's just sad for the kids especially the senior.
SGV430 Ouuut!
Hardship,
That's what was filed and I suppose it's up to the CIF to decide. as I said the very day it was filed... an uphill battle for sure and dependent on what has been *documented* and submitted ... which is and should remain private. (FWIW, many of the questions you pose are irrelevant to the facts the office will look into)
HAZING?
cif is dumb,
previously...how many South Hills transfers have been denied? anyone know?
maybe you should be mad at teh reporter who should have kown better than to let the woman hurt her own case
like i said before, look at the impact crutchfield's actions had on the program and teh kids that bailed on the team, the school. their friends and family and ultimately themselves...
what about Tip Sanders comments.."10 to 15 kids for Spring Ball....for both Varsity and JV"....that's unbelievable!!!
Everyone is crying the blues for the Canadas and to a certain extent Crutchfield is getting a pass but how about the players who have stuck it out?
Joe Amat
Do you really beleive Gonzalez is a hardship case.
Lets talk about the facts:
1. Kid gets kicked off the team
2. Daddy pulls kid out of school
3. Daddy claims life was in danger
4. Did the school write a letter saying WG Jr. life was in danger and shouldn't attend Glendora?
5. Were there police reports filed?
6. Isn't step-dad still taking him to school?
7. Where is he living today?
8. Isn't Amat a choice?
9. How many schools between Amat and Glendora?
Hardship my A@@. CIF does investigate..
Hurry Jordan I have an Amat jersey you could use..theres still time for you to make this weeks game..CIF is going to approve WG's transfer they'll approve yours too --- just as long as it isn't South Hills, everyone gets approved......
You know, I think this whole thing stinks. These kids should have been allowed to play at South hills high school, or where ever else they decided to go to.
Perhaps the mother is going about this in the wrong way. What I believe that she should do at his point, is to go after the idiots who prevented her kids from playing at South Hills in the first place.
In my opinion mom should sue the hell out of these idiots over at Duarte High school, and by suing them, I don’t mean the school district, but the individuals who are directly involved in this matter.
In fact, she should be able to not only take their homes, cars and jewelry, but the gold fish on top of the fireplace as well.
That’s just my take
Gerrrrrr !!
I actually owned Huskies and NO THEY DON'T BITE...IN FACT THEY'LL LICK YOU TO DEATH FIRST!!!
KNOW YOUR BREED!!!!
LMAO
Hey Huskies in the house! BITE THIS...lmao
"Bulldogs bark but DAWGS BITE!" what the.....
how about this one -
Huskies drool and BULLDOGS RULE! lmao
lame @ss
filmcrew09,
No. I have no clue what Mrs. Canada would have chosen to do if Coach Crutchfield had remained at Duarte. That would and should be her CHOICE. Parents once had a choice. I'm not sure why so many people are arguing against a mother MOVING into a new school district with her kids.
I suppose the question should be asked: How far does a PARENT need to RELOCATE her kids in order to avoid an attack from an administrator in the FORMER school district???
Also, what type of proof is adequate in order to disprove the allegations of "athletically motivated" transfers? I think that CIF's decision to enforce penalties without providing clarity on how to prove innocence will be grounds for a lawsuit.
It seems unjust to place the burden of proof onto the defendent along with the potential for penalty onto the defendent without providing any transparency on the methods to disprove the allegations.
SGVFootballFan,
I pick C non of the above.
Not true, Ms. Canada had begun looking at schools as early as February. She actually filled out applications at Damien, and La Salle prior to deciding on South Hills, which was well before Crutch was fired. She also knew well in advance of Crutch's firing that the lease on her house would not be renewed because the landlord's home was being foreclosed, which is the reason she began looking around in the first place...This is also probably why a lawyer has a legitimate lawsuit, if you look at the timeline, these decisions were made well in advance of her comments about Duarte.
Things that make you go Hmmmmm!
Let me preface this by saying I have no skin in this issue nor do I know all of the facts. I do feel sorry for the Canada’s as they may not be able to play this season no matter who’ fault it is.
I do have a couple of scenarios for consideration.
Let’s say you have two kids who play football at two different schools but are now looking to transfer to the same school.
Kid number 1 - HC gets fired let’s say due to philosophical differences with the admin. Kids parents for (whatever reason) decide to move and apply to CIF for change of address.
Kid number 2 - HC decides it’s time to step down from position due to personal reasons or the “want to spend more time with my family” reason. Kid’s parents decide to move apply to CIF for change of address.
Who should get approved?
We have enough athletes on our roster yes especially transfers from other schools I admit and there's nothing anyone can say or do about these ELIGIBLE athletes (we can't thank you enough the failing, miserable schools that then allows us to have your best athletes)and a few "homegrown" athletes to not only compete in league but win C.I.F.!
No one needs to feel sorry for us because we don't feel sorry for ourselves and instead we will use this as motivation and inspiration to beat everyone even worse. Mark my words, everyone will be eating their words at the end of the season!
What a story for the ages when we win C.I.F. in spite of everyone and everything everybody is saying.
Bulldogs bark but DAWGS BITE!
We ready!
ok new york....you and i both know if Crutchfield was still there those two kids would still be at Duarte....so dont sit there and say maybe she wanted to better them!!! thats a bunch of bull and you know it.....bottom line she should have stuck it out there!!
Aaron-
Why dont you quit responding to things you know (nothing) about? You are the biggest bag of hot air on the blog. I think you realy believe that you know everything about every team about every coach, truth is most of what you write is wrong.
Stick to Bonita, and even there you allways speculate. Stay Away
Aaron, now there you go, where is the actual evidence of "recruiting," that has been going on for years. Again, the Canada's have nothing to do with recruiting. Every school that wins, in any sport, has transfers, whether it's Northview wrestling, Glendora basketball, or Charter Oak, Los Altos and South Hills football, players and parents go to good programs. The programs I mentioned are the Valley's best, in Orange County it's Mater Dei, there's Long Beach Poly and Oaks Christian. Players and parents go where good coaching is, and frankly, schools that provide better education. The problem around here is that coaches who aren't good enough to draw those type athletes, and who don't win enough make-up for their shortcomings by spouting off at the mouth that it must be "recruiting." Face it, if you lived in the SGV and had a bonafide football prospect of a kid that you wanted to see developed the right way and you had the financial wherewithall, you would send your kid to Bishop Amat or move into the school district that you feel is best suited for your child. What's wrong with? All this other "recruiting" talk is a bunch of jealous malarkey. And by the way, I would bet if you checked the rosters on every program in the Valley there would be at least one or two transfers, they just might not be as high profile or make an impact on the field as say, a Canada, but they're transfers. I know, I know, if they're good, everyone on the blog calls it recruiting, if they're not, who really cares. What a double-standard bunch of BS. I know it, and you all know it down too.
Ah, Huskies believer, your lack of knowledge of highschool football has blinded you. Talk to other teams in South Hills league, which I have. How schools like South Hills have Career paths " Professioal Athlete" This was confirmed by an assistant coach in 2004. If the Canada bothers truly moved to South Hills area, then they will not mind the judgement by CIF. Remeber play by the rules! Many school recruit. Quit playing innocent Huskies believer, I am not stupid. I am not part of the problem. I accepted recruiting. It happens and there nothing I can do about it. Open your mind and eyes Hukiesbeliver, and accept the Truth. I was a coach in that division, I know
A crucial point to make , form what I understand, is that this was presented to CIF as a "transfer" case. The Canada's moved and , I suppose, assumed everything would be OK. Maybe they listened to others on how to work the system and get it approved. That move however, doesn't trump the CIF's assertion that it was athletically motivated. In reality, most "high profile" transfers are - they are just not presented that way (or talked about in the paper) The way the rule now reads (good or bad) is the transfer has to prove it was not. Apparently this was not done.
This simple "transfer" application is different than "hardship" requests. Had the Canada's been able to formulate a legitimate "hardship" at the beginning that the office would deem "unforseeable, unavoidable, and uncorrectable" - they may be suiting up for the Huskies. But you can't come in with that claim after the fact. All evidence needs to be presented at the beginning.
For that reason you can't compare "Transfer" approvals with "Hardship" approvals - they are two different animals.
Same results in store for Wallace Gonzalace. He should not step on the football field this year or the baseball diamond. Of course this is Amat the "GOLDEN" school of the SGV so it will go thru and Wallace will see action this year. Double standard abosolutley, Not fair absolutely, CIF play favorites for gate Money.... Absolutley! "It's all about the Benjamins"
Having read about this for what seems to be a year now, of course there was undo influence. Crutchfield was let go because he didn't do his job. If Duarte was really rising which it was why did he do the things he did. Get fired and encourage every player you can to pick up and leave.
Tip Sanders is a good coach. If all of those players had stayed Duarte wouldn't be where they are now and Jordan Canada would be getting looks because he'd be toting the rock. South Hills and transfers/recruits has been one of the dirtiest secrets of this valley that everyone knows about but nothing is done. Geographically there's a much larger difference when a family moves from San Fernando Valley to the SGV than from Duarte to West Covina. Obviously CIF doesn't just look at the piece of paper that says the transfers were athletically motivated. It seems that they picked up the phone on this one and spoke with people.
It's not right to really punish these kids, but you're also punishing the school by supposedly denying them what seems to be a player that has been christened their "savior" at the running back position.
Obviously this doesn't involve just the Canadas nor should it, the only player that left Duarte that is still eligible is Wardell Crutchfield, jr. All of the other kids that transfered to Baldwin Park are not eligible. It's very simple why he is eligible even though it is relatively unfair. His father was fired, so his child gets the free pass.
Jordan Canada will get his chance to play again it just won't be in High School and Jaime will be able to play next year.
"Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio, Radio..!"
Anyone talking about the school's other kids who actually were loyal? The Canadas can't separate their actions from the actions of over 30 kids that left the program and ruined a program.
Crutchfield talked allot about "respect" but little about honor and loyalty. The team played for Duarte the school which represented the community. This is bigger than just two players...what about all th kids who just "walked away" and got nothing in return?
The rumors are 30/40 kids walked off with nothing...is that what the CIF is suppose to ignore? Maybe the CIF should have issued a time limit for these ill adviced kids to return and move forward...wouldn't that have been a better story?
Last year I was called in to help defend a suspended player who was wrogly accused Befoe I spent a dime I asked the kid a crucial question..he hmmmm and aaaaawwwwwwed and I said..."sorry...that's not the answer I was looking for."
Sometimes as parents we have to look at the bigger picture instead of teh needs of one kid who brought a problem on himself.
The Canadas are victims of believing the hype and listening to arm chair lawyers and back yard know it alls.
All is not lost..go to MSAC and prove your worth, Teh younger Caada has next year to enjoy his new safer" surroundings. So what do you tell teh players who stayed and will take 10 beatings this year or the players who listened, left and gave up "everything" listening to a bitter former employee...which is all he was...Crutchfield was NOT Duarte...Duarte will get it together next year when this 4 year crybaby session is over...like all high school crushes theyll look back on this and say..."WAS I REALLY THAT FOOLISH???"
HAHAHAH that's what they get. Should have stuck it out. Colleges will find you if you are good.
Didn't Crutchfield QUIT ON THE TEAM ONCE?
So why is it surprising that he screwed the kids and school again by encouraging kids to leave resulting in 13 kids going out for Spring Ball for both Varsity and JV teams TOTAL?
Everyone thinks the Canada boys were screwed but aren't all the boys screwed except Crutch's kid? What other former Varsty players were allowed to play for other schools?
The mom made her bed and no she will only continue to hurt her son's recruiting chances. The oldest son will go to JC and prove to be Gilmore or maybe a Mt SAC D1 signee but this conversation is dragging out pas mid season...enough already!
30 or 40 kids did not continue to play once Crutch left...who influenced them? The CIF and Duarte HAD to send a message! Ever hear of a mutiny? Well that's what happened over there...a complete break down in institutional control.
One question why hasn't Crutchfield publicly encouraged th players to support the new coach?
Pretty simple. If Canada is relaly that good, which I hope he is, he'll prove it next year right dow the street at MSAC!
What a waste of time, money and goodwill.
The Truth, again you don't speak the truth, you're part of the problem. You spout at the mouth about South Hills "recruiting," when this has absolutely nothing to do about recruiting. Get your facts straight.
What lesson is there to be learned, filmcrew09? Hide your intentions from the almighty CIF? Hide your intentions from any authority figure? Why??? So Mrs. Canada was interviewed by this paper. Are her statements to the newspaper then binding? Why can't she make new statements now that says she was just joking?
Didn't Duarte play against South Hills? Maybe the mother was impressed with the entire South Hills organization and decided she would like her sons to be part of that school community. What's wrong with wanting to put your sons into a better situation?
The rules for transfers are broken. The fact that an administrator at the old school can make a claim such that the burden of proof falls on the defendant does not make any sense.
Following the rules historically has not applied to broken rules.
The only true losers in this are the Canada boys. I mean they are caught in a adult world of sabotage and personal gains and statements. They are kids that want to play the game of football on friday nites. To miss out on this because of a move and a appeal not to mention mom spouting off at the mouth, the boys are the ones hurt not the adults. The Adults are just in it for self satisfaction. They should have stayed at Duarte for better or for worse and so should of lots of the players.
I like what Basic said, "Don't punish the kids, punish the programs, if you did that, I think a lot of programs would be a lot more careful about what they say and do..." Certain schools get away with recruiting, even though they dont recruit. "They just come to us."
As for the posibility of a law suit... what a joke. The parents screwed up by their actions and now her kids are going topay the price. The american way. I screwed up so I will sue someone.
Never saw the kids play. Dont know their skill level, so as to their scholarship potential I canty comment. If they are good they will be found.
The Canada brothers are victims. They got caught in the mix. Recruiting is a cancer through out CIF. CIF has done nothing in the past, but now they are trying to redeem themselves. Coaches constantly cheat, recruit to get better. Schools preach honesty and sportsmanship, but do not act upon it. South Hills is one of many programs that get away with recruiting. Nothing will change until the cancer is cut out! Those of who you that do not believe this, get out of fantasyland.

we know why the boys really left that school in the first place....maybe they should have just stuck it out!!! i hope the mom has learned a lesson from this.....and i hope they continue to keep getting denied!!!
Why do people continue to use the word "recruiting." This has absolutely nothing to do with recruiting on South Hills' part, this was a mother's decision to move her kids from Duarte after the school's administration fired a popular coach and turned a rising program into the worst in the Valley. I don't blame her or the 30 to 40 other kids who are no longer in the program because of Duarte's misjudment. It's just a shame that Duarte not only felt the need to destory its program, but also the need to ruin the lives of kids who no longer wanted to be part of it. Shame on you, shame on you, shame on you. For the life of me I don't see the benefit that Duarte gets out of possibly ruining the chance of a scholarship education by doing whatever it can to stop the Canada kids from playing football.
I would suggest that we have not heard the end of this saga.
There will be litigation against CIF , potentially Duarte Unified, Duarte High School, specifially the Principal. There has clearly been a breakdown in some sort of implied contract between Mrs. Canada and the Principal; she was, with her oldest son, intimately involved in the interview process for the new Head Football Coach; clearly Tip Saunders was not her choice, thus she took her boys and left.
The oldest son has the idea he can play in the "League", thus the argument can be made that by denying him this year they are impacting his ability to gain a scholarship, and ultimately his draft position.
I would suggest "stay tuned" is an understatement.
SGV, I totally agree with you "Poor kids" I know recruiting is an issue that needs to be handled, but you also have to understand how this affect those kids, and not just these two but any other kids that make bad/wrong decisions, for a lot of these kids sports is their way to go on to a bigger brighter future and they are now denied. SAD is all I can really say. Don't punish the kids, punish the programs, if you did that, I think a lot of programs would be a lot more careful about what they say and do...

Thanks, Crutch! You have great insight! At least your kids eligible!!!!!
WHY DOESN'T THE CIF JUST RULE THE MOM INELGIBLE AND LET THE BOYS PLAY!
Ouch, that's got to hurt. Poor kids what can you do, the mom should not have spoke to the media redarding this issue.
