Football Super 32: Bishop Amat remains on top, South Hills, Glendora making their move

| | Comments (62) |

Above: Rowland wide receiver Leonardo Freeman becomes the quarterback in Michael Ball's absence.

Tribune Top Ten
1. Bishop Amat (6-0) - If someone told me the Lancers would start 6-0 with what they had returning, I would have stuck one of those Bishop Amat bumper stickers over their mouth and laughed. It's amazing, the Lancers deserve to stay No. 1 even if they lose, but I caution, this could be where the rubber meets the road. The next four include Alemany, Crespi, Loyola and Notre Dame.
2. Charter Oak (6-1) - After the Chargers dispose of Diamond Ranch on Friday (whom they beat every year), they will cruise through the rest of the Miramonte to finish 4-0 and 9-1 overall, which will be good enough for the top seed in the Southeast playoffs. How's that for an obvious prediction?
3. Rowland (6-0) - It's not fair to drop a team after they win as impressively as the Raiders did, knocking off undefeated Walnut 27-7. But the fact is they're holding onto this ranking by a thread now that that all-everything QB Michael Ball broke his collarbone and is out six weeks.
4. South Hills (4-2) - The Huskies make the biggest leap from No. 7 after thoroughly dominating rival West Covina. Jacob Shirley looks like he's locked in at QB, and now they have a legitimate one-two punch in the backfield with Geoffrey Vaughns and Jamel Hart.
5. Glendora (4-2) - The Tartans seemed to have sorted out their consistency issues, winning three straight, but that loss to West Covina is glaring considering what South Hills just did to them.
6. San Dimas (5-1) - With Covina, Ganesha and Northview to follow, there is no reason to believer the Saints won't be 9-1 going into the league finale against Baldwin Park.
7. Walnut (5-1) - They're in the passenger seat, knowing they will have to beat West Covina this week or South Hills later to have a realistic shot at a playoff berth. That's right, they could finish 7-3 and not get in.
8. Baldwin Park (5-1) -- Just when you might be doubting the Braves, they come back and prove you wrong again. Just like San Dimas, they will be 9-1 when they meet the Saints in the league finale.
9. West Covina (3-4) - They better drink a bottle of get tough, because they follow their South Hills loss with Walnut and Rowland. I'm still not sure if the Huskies were that good, or if the Bulldogs had an off night, but I'm sure we will find out over the next two weeks.
10. Azusa (6-1) -- The defending Montview champs are at it again, winning by a 23-point margin in the most balanced Montview in years.,

The Middle 10
11. Arroyo (4-2), 12. Damien (1-5), 13. Los Altos (3-3), 14. La Puente (5-2), 15. Workman (4-2), 16. Gladstone (5-1), 17. Diamond Ranch (1-5), 18. Bonita (1-4), 19. Covinan (2-4), 20. Wilson (2-4).

On the bottom looking up
21. Gladstone (4-2), 22. Sierra Vista (3-3), 23. Rosemead (1-5), 24. Northview (1-5), 25. Nogales (2-4), 26. Bassett (3-3), 27. Diamond Bar (0-6), 28, South El Monte (1-5), 29. El Monte (0-6), 30. Mountain View (0-6), 31. Ganesha (0-6), 32. Duarte (0-7)

I,M worried about next year QB position, I don't know how long you've been following this team, well I've been here since they started praticing in the summer. Haggerty said he would.give everyone equal opportunity and then as soon as J M and R R show up he threw # 16 into the back seat. Although he was never given a fair shake he would often out perform either of the two and with as I've said before 2nd and 3rd stringers. I offen wondered how much better he would do with the caliber of kids that J M.and R R had. I've watched him all summer and through out the season. Incedently this doesn't just comes from me but from others. I heard people make comments like he sets up quicker, he's got a more accurate arm and just as long or longer. Running plays, I've yet to see the others sell play actions as well he does. Lastly - wonder why other coahes say they don't understand it either and by the way last year he was given a scholarship to Chris Ricks school for QBs and WRs. Oh and quess what he got another all paid scholarship that will be held at UCLA this yr. You should do a little researhing

Amat's season is great because they are working as a team and winning as a team. As fans we have to remember that football is the ultimate team game. The offensive and defensive players must be in complete sync with each other, and the only way to achieve that is with consistency. At mid-season, it would not be productive to begin experimenting with new players and different combinations and making drastic changes.
Each one of the players have had the opportunity to prepare and develop equally for months now, and they have an opportunity to display their talents on a daily basis at practice. So, the decision on who should be playing is not a toss of the coin or a popularity choice. It is based on an extended period of personal observation from a highly qualified group of talented coaches of which players perform at a high level day in and day out.
Are there situations where a talented player should be playing more...absolutely! However, in those situations, it's usually because their is a more talented player in front of him. Think about the running back situation at Amat. Just about every year for the past 30 years, there is an extremely talented running back that has to wait his turn. Some get there opportunity eventually as the starter, and some get their opportunity in the fourth quarter when the outcome of the game is already in hand. That was the case last year, that is the case this year and that has been the case.
If you perform well on the practice field on a consistent basis, then you "will" get on the field friday nights. A coach will find a spot for you! Coaches are that way, they want to win, and the best way to do that is to play the best players they have.
At Amat, those players, simply play great all of the time. Do they make mistakes...who doesn't! Watch the other players besides the QB or RB. Watch the O line or the D line and see their effort, and you'll see a high degree of success because the best players are playing. Their concern is doing it the right way not their own way. And!!! What is great is that Amat plays offense, defense AND special teams. That's how you win.
Go Amat! It is a pleasure watching your games!!!

A parent called up and asked about using a false address on his form if that was a CIF violation. CIF said no, because like you said he had his one free move after his freshmen year. But CIF also said that if the school is closed enrollment then they can't take any athletic out of area including this sophomore. So you may want to call CIF and get that clarified. LA football has some very important decisions to make about tonight’s game with Bonita. If they play this kid and win you know Bonita is going to be calling CIF.

Once again Los Altos is closed enrollment, which means all new students have to be living in LA's area. There is no sophomore or freshmen exception to that rule per CIF.

Please call CIF talk to them.

Like I said this goes much deeper than the football program, we are talking about all the sports programs within LA. LA basically decided that closed enrollment applied to the non-student athletics only, which is a CIF violation.

Good Luck Tonight................

Gypsy said:

I see a bright AMAT future. That freshman team has a couple of big hitters and skill players that are going to add nicely to the young Lancers that are playing now. I worry about the QB spot though? If the Ruiz kid decides to go baseball only, we look very thin at the QB spot. I don't think Hags will let his starting QB go both ways either so there goes Ruiz at the safety spot and Cazares is gone from SS too???? We will need a back up to #16 and I'm sure the JV kid is a great kid and all but I think he is a few games away from a varsity QB. Not trying to bash anybody here just a glimpse into my crystal ball. Let me table myself....Let's take care of Alemany and the rest of the Serra league for this year and start worrying about next year - next year. LANCER HOMECOMING TONIGHT! It's always good to get together with FAMILY! Hope to see all Lancers, past, present and future out at the game tonight! GO LANCERS!

LA Insider said:

As for the Felipe rumor...I have not heard anything. But I wouldn't be surprised if that is, in fact, the case. People 'round here don't take kindly to losing. Although if LA wins tonight and effectively clinches a playoff birth I would be shocked to see them hit the eject button.

You say you heard this directly from an LA administrator? Maybe we should start calling YOU LA Insider!

LA Insider said:

Yeah moron, I made a phone call at 1:00am to investigate this ludicrous claim.

I know exactly who you are talking about. He is a sophomore and transferred in after his freshman year. Not sure if you're aware of this, but CIF made a new rule that every athlete gets a free transfer after their freshman year for any reason. They do not have to live in the area. They can go anywhere they want for any reason. The only thing that is forbidden is if there is undue influence. So unless you can prove that the LA staff recruited this young man, you're out of luck. It doesn't matter where he lives.

Your move Hot Shot.

LA Insider,

What happen, your computer get a virus, or maybe you made a few phone calls and decided to keep your month shout. Guess you aren't as much of an insider as you thought.

LA Busted said:

LA Insider,

I am not going to name names, but you have a varsity running back, this is his first year at LA. The family doesn't leave in the area, not even in the county. Since you are a LA insider you know exactly who I am talking about. So you can ask him, where he lives. From what we are being told this is one of many kids that don't live in Los Altos area. Don't forget LA is a closed enrollment school effective this year. You need clarification call CIF, they are aware of the situation. The school district is currently investigating the extent of this CIF violation.

Since you are a LA insider, any truth to the rumor that Felipe is gone. According to someone in your school's administration Felipe has agreed at the end of the year he is going to step down.

LA Insider said:

LA Busted...

Yup, you got us buddy. I'll be the first to admit that our girls tennis and boys JV soccer have been recruiting heavily! Wow, how did we ever think we could get that by you? I guess we'll just have to turn ourselves in now huh?

Wait, on second thought, I think we'll just wait this one out and see what evidence you can produce. Don't say "a player" name a name you pu$$y. Or are you just trying to rough up the waters and in reality you have no evidence of your claim whatsoever?

Haha...you're a joke, a sad, pathetic joke.

I read on this blog that we needed to pick up the offense, If I can add my two cents. I made.a comment last week regarding another QB that possibly should be given a more equal chance to participate. How about trying #16. He is one of the hardest worker and when called on, has performed petty darn good, and most the time with the 2nd and 3rd string. This kid can throw as well as the other two but is also quicker and sets up in the pocket faster. If your offense is not doing very well, how about trying something else. By the way have you folks seen Jerry M as a receiver? I think he's a better receiver than he is a QB. This just an opinion. Good luck tomorrow boys which ever way you can get it

call what i see said:

HmHm I guess you don't read the tribune where week after week they call out the efforts of the special teams and the defense. Just because I call what I see has nothing to do with the kids personality or anything else for that matter. You said yourself Rio does nothing but play good week after week. Your absolutely right and that's all he can offer at his young age. If you watch him on defense he has no clue of how to hit ala casares. He goes at the opponent side ways or looks to push him out of bounds as oppose to meeting him head on, What ever jerry did as you say against Damian, look at Damians stats as well.Look I want them to win with or without these kids never the less but some way or some how they need to pick it up if this is who your going with. If you look at this realistcally, you would see what not only me and others also to include the tribune you might better understand that we deal in facts, not in just playing good. Again look at the offense stats. Just playing good is not going to cut it. I hope for the kids sake that I'm wrong but I don't think so. Don't take it personal pal.

hmmm said:

call what i see... how can you say jerry and rio are great kids then bag on them?? they are two of Amat's top athletes in the school. What did Jerry do against Damien...All Rio does is play good. What kids do you think deserve playing time over these two kids??? give me a break guy..

LA Busted said:

LA is being investigated for illegal recruiting by CIF. This investigation started with the football program and has expanded to all sports programs. Principal Cheli McReynolds in an attempt to curve the violence changed LA to a closed enrollment school effective this year. Meaning that no new student can attend LA unless they live in LA's area. The LA football program has multi kids including one starting on Varsity that are under investigation. One LA coach has acknowledged that all programs have been recruiting athletics from out of their area. They were under the impression that it was acceptable as long as they completed the choice forms via the district. According to CIF rules if a school is closed for students then it has to be closed for student athletics.

DRAlum,

I don't know about the fans, maybe it was a Saturday night thing but you guys play more than one Saturday night game a season.

I went to the Amat-DR game. You have talent or it at least looks like it but DR has no depth. As far as fans are concerned I saw parents and some alumni at that game. I saw barely any students. You need to have the students there in support of the team. Away games are different in general but a home game you have to come on full force.

Sheesh Bonita will gave four straight games on the road...this is gonna hurt.

DRalumn said:

I'm not here to speak about how good Amat is or anyone else is. All I know is that DR is struggling because of some chemistry issues. They have the athletes, they have the coaches, and they have the fans. The only thing this squad needs to do is develop some leaders who will actually be listened to. This team is young, but that is still not an excuse. Yes we lost some close games. But thats football. Same thing happened last year, the difference with last years team was they weren't satisfied. They knew that if they wanted to be respected they had to earn it, and for the most part they did. Diamond Ranch is always full of talent. But discipline beats talent any day. Thats why Amat is so successful. Thats why Air Force is successful. They take average players who know exactly what they have to do every play, and execute. But don't misunderstand me, DR can turn the tables whenever THEY want to.

call what i see,

Are you advocating that #16 play more at QB for Amat?

If so, what leads you to believe he should be playing more?

Aaron said:

sgvfootballfan,

Are you being serious. Winning one game means so much when the team you beat has only one win. Their win was against Arcadia who has only one win against Glendale who has one win against South Pasadena who has two wins against Keppel and Blair who have one and no wins respectively. So you can see where I'm going with this, which means that the victory against Muir has you blowing a lot hot air.

So do some fact checking. I hope DR beats Los Altos, but if you can't tell already it's going to be a battle between the lowlies in Miramonte. Sad year when our league is probably the worst in the Division.

Call what I see,

I've seen Jerry play in two games. You can already tell that their philosophy is nowhere near pass-happy. I think you're be surprised with Jerry if they opened it up a little. As I said in another comment he has the intangibles that you want at quarterback from the two performances I've seen.

I thought you guys solved the BA-DR debate on the field...well at least it was solved for everyone else except sgvfootballfan.

call what i see said:

Finally some of you are begining to see what I've been seeing for 6 weeks.
If the offense doesn't get a fine tune-up we may be in trouble in league play.

The statement was made earlier, (the offense has to step.up and I don't know why it hasn't) or something to that effect. I also have a question, what has Rio and Jerry accomlished offensively this yr? Check the stats. Jerry though a great kid but he is not a real QB. He has done a great job with what he is athletically able to do. Poor Rio also a great kid is so over rated. He is a great prospect but he doesn't have the maturity yet. He's been tried in so many positions and he has been addeqate at best. It was said that he caused a fumble last week that lead to the first score,WRONG! Jordan Wall did. He did fumble the ball though. Giving other kids a chance may help. I really hope no one gets offended and start this crap about who my kid is, instead of seeing the real facts like some of you are starting too. I just call what I see.

There's no way that Elsinore would beat BA. So what if they were bigger and more physical than BA. If DR was able to hang with them the entire game, I don't see why BA would not be able to. Here's the proof:

Elsinore escaped with a 15-3 win. Heck, DR was up 3-0 at halftime!

On the contrary, BA destroyed Diamond Ranch 41-13! This game was a complete mismatch.

Now you may not support the whole transitive property thing but....

How can you conclude that Elsinore would "would have spanked BA?"

Dr has done well this year.We beat Muir which would probably beat half the teams in the sgv.Lost to a good Elsinore team 15-3,Led Colony at half and should have beat them had to many mistakes.Had Chino Hills beat and lost in last seconds of game, lost to Glendora on last second field goal.Had many first stringers out of BA game and yes we did loose.I can tell you the way Elsinore played against us they would have spanked BA. Elsinore has a big team and is the most physical team that we have played this year by far,and we were really banged up after we played them, more then any one we've played by far. We'll be in the play-offs and should have everyone back and healthy for first play-off game.We are DR

point well taken. i did not include st. francis in that mix and might even be short sighted in my examination of other area teams. i spoke of charter oak and south hills because those are the schools constantly referred to as having the best talent. truth be told, i don't know what's at azusa, la puente, workman, temple city, rosemead, etc. this year and i don't mean to offend when leaving those schools out. in the end, this is just my opinion. i'd be hard pressed to find another person in the valley, including riley, who is putting on the shows johnson is. again, that's just my take on the situation. who's the better player? from what i've seen the past two years, i'd have to take riley based on size and potential alone. johnson still, in my estimation, has more big play ability.

sevenduece,

I like how you say that Darian Johnson is the best player in the Valley. You backed that up by saying that you have seen Charter Oak on TV and seen South Hills once. I guess these are the only teams in the Valley right? The best player in the Valley has to go to a player that Fred doesn't cover Dietrich Riley from St Francis. Yes St Francis is still in the San Gabriel Valley. This kid is 6-1 200lbs compared to Darian who is a stud for BA (dont get me wrong) at 5-8 or 5-9 170 or 180lbs. Riley has narrowed down his offers and is considering Florida, Notre Dame, Tennessee and
USC. These school don't recruit AFL players, they recruit future NFL players. So Riley hands down is this years best athlete in the SGV and maybe the most coveted prospect out of California this year. Plus if it wasn't for one mistake by St Francis QB they would have beat Notre Dame on last Friday.

Joe Amat,
i agree, herrington has done an excellent job with alemany. you're right, coaching absolutely matters and the culture he's brought from hart is paying dividents. that will make them a formidable program for years to come. i guess i see something in bishop amat that translates into success. the buy in factor makes this a special team which, by all accounts, was not supposed to be as good as last year's team let alone undefeated. i certainly do not mean to downgrade the abilities of alemany or its coaching staff. they've obviously created and continue to create a culture of winning in all phases. i look forward to friday night. i can't wait. it should be a great game.

They have improved significantly over the past few years since Herrington took over a doormat program with a little step up every year. THe two of us are trading opponents in the Mission/Serra crossover games so St Paul plays Crespi this week after Alemany beat Crespi last week. It will be a good guage to see where everyone stands going into league.

Nice that it's home, good that it's Homecoming and we, too seem to be getting a little better each week. Let's hope that continues.

bishop amat vs alemany should be an excellent game. in watching bishop amat play, i sometimes come away thinking the offense could have, and perhaps, should have scored more points. i can't, in all honesty, say why they don't score more points offensively when they have the tools to do so. alemany has played a tougher schedule which leads me to believe that they will be ready to play. i do, however, believe bishop amat will wear them down in the end and be victorious. i've withheld commenting for some time now, but can say with certainty that i believe darien johnson is the best player in the valley. granted, i've only seen charter oak on television and south hills 1 time, but he seems to be a cut above athletically than anyone else i've seen in the sgv. i think the player for amat that hasn't been talked about enough is davis cazares. game after game i watch this young man patrol the secondary like a doberman pincher at an auto body shop at 12 midnight. the young man is a hitter and a great defensive player. this week's game should be very interesting. alemany appears to have more athleticism, but bishop amat's coaching, team approach, and tradition should pull them through. at any rate, it will be a wonderful game.

What happends if Workman beats Azusa to finish the season and LP, Workman & Azusa all finish 5-1 in league? And for those who say it doesn't matter they are wrong because last season Azusa (#1 seed) & Duarte (#2 seed) both won there 1st round games while the #3 & #4 seeds both got waxed.

I could see Workman beating Azusa because of #5 & #3 those are two special player they have and could put up some points, I don't know what the hell happend to them last week against LP but I know they are a way better team than that

Bravetown you are right about Fred. Braves look tough, but you and I know Pomona is for real this year. Should be a good game this week, I hope you guys win. Saints should handle Covina then Pomona comes to town. Like I said in the beginning, It will be Braves, Saints, and Devils this year.

FRED, YOUR THE ONLY DOUBTING THE BRAVES. I TOLD U NOT TO PICK COVINA. THAT GAME WASNT EVEN AS CLOSE AS THE SCORE INDICATED. BP COULDVE PUT FORTY ON THEM. UP NEXT, POMONA, FEEL FREE TO PICK AGAINST THE BRAVES AGAIN, THAT WOULD ALMOST GUARANTEE B.P. WILL WIN.

GO BRAVES !!!!
