Girls Volleyball Top 10: Glendora still on top; Walnut makes a push; St. Lucy's, SHills next

| | Comments (31) |

Above: Rowland and Ganesha in last week's action.

Girls Volleyball Top 10
1. Glendora (5-2)
2. Walnut (7-3)
3. St. Lucy's (10-3)
4. South Hills (4-4)
5. Bonita (5-5)
6. Los Altos (9-3)
7. Ganesha (11-3)
8. San Dimas (6-3)
9. Gladstone (14-5)
10. Bishop Amat (9-2)

Comments: The Tartans took a drop, losing to Hart last week, but not enough to knock them off the top perch. It will be interesting to see how they do in the first week of Sierra League play, first tonight at Diamond Bar, then at St. Lucy's on Thursday...Walnut and St. Lucy's look to be settling in to how we saw them before the season...Bonita has hit a slump I didn't think they would make. But the Bearcats will have to have their ship righted by Thursday when they visit Los Altos in a much-anticipated match...Ganesha is off to a fast start and now may be the best in the Valle Vista League heading into league play. But I wouldn't count out San Dimas just yet...I expect Gladstone to get on a roll now that they have began league play...I couldn't ignore Bishop Amat's record anymore, so let's see what the Lancers do with the attention....We have some big matches this week, with the two best on Thursday. St. Lucy's is hosting Glendora in the battle of the foothills and Bonita is at Los Altos for the war of the Miramonte, chapter 1. Bishop Amat also hosts St. Paul, in another traditional battle. I will be at the Glendora-Diamond Bar match tonight and will cover Bonita-Los Altos on Thursday. We also plan to have someone at the Glendora-St. Lucy's match.

Ashley,

You are remarkable player and many of us parents at LA know what a great athlete you are. You handle yourself with grace and you DO have much more experience on the court. Too bad there's always one bad seed out there. If one idiot parent is talking about you at LA, well, shame on them. Remember, you just have to take it with a grain of salt considering the probable source. Its sad that one parent has to make the rest of us look bad.

Ash,

Love the energy and you were respectful in commenting about the other setter so thank you. I do hope you girsl get a big win tonight.

Now my 'little' advice...Try and not let this get the better of you, I am sure there will be people who try to put you down but please try to stay above it, yes I know it is hard to do but in the end I think it will be best. I know this sounds bad but it really isn't, just trying to let you know that sometimes we all over react and while your comments here were great, it would be ashamed if one day they were not and all because someone pushed your buttons or made bad comments about you (by the looks of things, you have plenty of defenders :-) ) so if you ever get the urge to post negatively NOT THAT YOU HAVE but if you ever do get that urge, maybe have a teacher read it first. Hope you don't take this the wrong way. You are an Amazing player and I wish you the best of luck in ALL that you do...

Go Get'em Lady Bearcats.

Nicely put Ashley! Rarely do we get the athlete's perspective. Everyone is pulling for you guys. Good luck!

1. Go get 'em, Ash! Show them how it's done!
2. St. Lucy's: Get it done, one at a time!
3. I also think that the Ayala DB match-up is an interesting and important one. Hard to predict how this one will fall out. Time for some leadership from both teams!
4. Good luck to everyone tonight!

Love it!!! Love the enthusiasm. Would love to hear Bonita as a team will show everyone what you guys have. Good luck tonight. You are a very good team.

Thank you to all Los Altos parents for commenting about your setter... it made me realize how much more tonight means because now i have so much more motive to play well and want to beat your girls team tonight. Erica is a great setter and good all around player but i need to worry about my team tonight and my girls this is a team. Nothings about one individual this isn't tennis. I am going to take this as a motivation to play 10 times harder tonight because i am not young and i am definetly not unexperianced. I work hard and i am dedicated to what i do and i love it. Our team this year has so much heart and yes we may be young but we are talented. So for all you parents i personally thank you for commenting on the biggest game day of our season it only feeds my fire along with my team. We will see tonight who is too young or unexperianced.. we will see on the court go Bearcats..Sincerely bonitas setter Ashley Maxfeldt
Have a LOVELY day parents :)

Diamond Bar is not a contender this year...

They just lost in to glendora last night.

vblfan2 said:

Good point Ralph, LA hasn't done that much to drop, but they will have their chance to move up with 2 against Bonita and 2 against South Hills.

vbl said:

who are the favorites on Thursday? I know Glendora and Bonita are the higher ranked teams in their matchups but SL and LA are both at home, that has got to be worth something.

I predict SL over Glendora in 4
and Bonita over LA in 5 but I can see that one going either way.

The one game nobody is talking about is the Ayala-DB game on Thursday, that game could be important if they only take 3 to CIF out of the Sierra league, although lately they have taking 4.

Previous blog by LA fan made the comparison of setters. How LA setter is more experienced than Bonita's and how that could play in to Los Altos' favor.

I personally hope someone shares that with Maxfeldt. I agree with Atic that it was one of the sillier comments made. (And that's saying a lot taking in to consideration all of LA Fan's comments).

Go Bearcats!

Last thread from volleyball fan. Hard to keep track, but this comment stood out.

"Bonita with the young setter will have a tough time setting the middles. If la pierre gets clamped and blocked a few times by the los altos height its going to be a long night. However if bonita serves Los Altos hard and takes them out of thier rythm, los altos much like last year will have a long night of passing issues. Los Altos matches up to bonita very well, los altos has good middles and bonita has a decent middle (young), as for the setter, los altos has a little more experienced setters but in the outside, they are toe to toe. Los Altos will have to serve hard, block hard, and play tought defense, as they are the contender...

"Young team" to me means not having played together at a certain level and not so much about their ability. I agree that if they are on the team there is a reason why, they have the talent but I understand when someone calls them "young".
...atic... your last comment, I did not see anyone calling thr Bonita setter young or inexperiance but if they did, I agree with you, she is neither. I don't know much about volleyball but man she is TALENTED and Always stands out to me during the games.

Lets go Lady Bearcats...

vbfan-atic said:

I don't like characterizing a team as "young" either, especially when they bring other things to the court-like experience, training, leadership skills, chemistry, talent, etc. Who cares what their birth certificate says. Do you think anyone asked Mark Sanchez for his? I also don't see anyone using it as an excuse for a loss. Teams that have lost have lost because they "had a bad night", made more errors than the other team, or were simply out played by a better team. If you look around, there are a good number of sophomores and some freshmen named to varsity teams who are contributing to their team's success. These are the same girls who have been playing since they were 9 or 10 years old on solid club teams, same girls who put in lots of OT in the gym and training on their own. So yeah, they might be young chronologically but experience-wise, they are beyond many other "older" players on many other teams. It is going to be a great 3 or 4 more years in the IE and SGV because of these girls. By the way, Bonita's setter is not young or inexperienced. Silliest statement made on this blog. Play on girls!

Volleyball Insider said:

To LA Fan: What is your jibberish now? You put yourself among the educated volleyballers do you? Then you realize a team may be young in age but also young in the sense that there aren't the number of seniors that generally would lead the team. Tenure/Experience is just as important as raw talent. You being the well wounded sportsman that you are can understand the importance of how teams become teams. Its just the fact. In any sport.

SL's team has young players but I see a lot of leadership in Dalton/Callen/Macy. Keep up the good work Regents!

Congratulations to the Tartans who had an impressive win last night.

Big games to focus in on is the Bonita/Los Altos and Glendora/St. Lucy's.

vbl said:

So no real suprises on Tuesday's games, all of the usual suspects won. Maybe Thursday's games will mix up the rankings.

I like that the SL fans are calling their shot.

GHigh said:

la fan: So are young teams not young? They may be capable of playing at the varsity level, but if they are coached well (and may still be growing physically and mentally) they will be better as they get older. I don't really get your point, I guess it's pointed at St. Lucy's?

la fan said:

Many educated volleyball fans just don't understand why some bloggers use the term "young" as an excuse for losing. If their varsity coach think they should be on varsity team, that means those players are capable of performing at varsity level physically and mentally regardless of their grade levels. No real varsity coaches would cut all their seniors and juniors and put a bunch of freshmen on the varsity team if they can't play at that level. That's go to say in any sports from high school to college to the pros.

Volleyball Insider: I agree with you that Diamond Bar is probably a strong team-great coach that develops all her players.

Did I say we were rebuilding? I hope I didn't because I hate that cliche. We are always building, and sometimes collapsing.

Thanks for the compliments to y'all. We hope to keep improving and that the run continues.

Ganesha Def. Northview at Northview:

Thanks for putting those beautiful Gigantes on the cover photo!

Good luck to all on Thursday. Please post all scores for the fun of it.

The Glendora/Diamond Bar game should be a good one. Diamond Bar is better than what their record says. They just played Rancho and Los Osos and faired better than Bonita or Los Altos. I hope to see Diamond Bar put their claim in tonight as to why they should be in the top 10. Especially since they have been honest with their record when some schools (look at the #1 spot)have listed a 5-2 record and not all their games listed.

Glad to see Bishop Amat on the board. It has been awhile.

And we all believed GHigh when he said he was in a rebuilding year?!? Nice job if you really are rebuilding. Your record speaks for itself.

Let the games begin...

vbl said:

Interesting. This should create some good dialogue between the LA and SL fans. And how about Diamond Bar out of the top 10 for the first time in a couple of years. I think they play Glendora tonight, maybe they can make a statement.
