Girls volleyball top 10: St. Lucy's is soaring

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TOP 10
1. St. Lucy's (12-3)
2. Walnut (11-3)
3. South Hills (6-4)
4. Bonita (7-5)
5. Glendora (5-2)
6. Los Altos (9-4)
7. Ganesha (13-3)
8. San Dimas (8-3)
9. Gladstone (17-5)
10. Bishop Amat (10-3)
Notes: Normally, I don't like leap-frogging a team when the team above has done everything asked of them, like Walnut did last week, sweeping two opponents. But it was just too hard to ignore what St. Lucy's did last week. The Regents not only swept two opponents, but did it against two of the better teams in the Sierra League in Chino Hills and Glendora, and the Tartans also were our No. 1 team the past few weeks. St. Lucy's now has defeated two teams ranked our top five its past two matches. It does set up a monster match on Thursday between Nos. 2 and 3 at South Hills. The two teams have split their last four matches, including the past two going five games. Thursday should be no different. Glendora dropped down four slots to No. 4, but when they get swept and the teams ahead of them all swept opponents, including Bonita winning in three against ranked Los Altos, it was explainable. Tonight we have a big non-league match between Los Altos and South Hills. But I will be at the big Montview League showdown between defending champion La Puente and preseason favorite Gladstone. Both teams are 4-0 in league play.

TUESDAY'S RESULTS
La Puente def. Gladstone, 25-14, 25-18, 20-25, 25-14 - The Warriors won their 20th consecutive Montview League match to take over the league title chase, improving to 8-10 and 5-0. Gladstone, ranked No. 5 in CIF-SS Division 4-A, slipped to 17-6, 4-1. Rocio Armendariz had 14 kills and Elisa Valenzuela had eight for La Puente. Marissa Flores led Gladstone with nine kills.
La Puente coach Daniel Krawiec: "It's exciting beating Gladstone. The girls were nervous before the (match), but once it started we got into rhythm. This was the best we played all year."
Gladstone coach Jeff Divine: "We were out of sync. One of our problems has been hitting errors, but lately we've been overcoming that.
"La Puente had a good defense, but our setting was inconsistent. The hitters were trying to things they couldn't normally do."
Other Scores
Miramonte League
Bonita def. Diamond Ranch, 25-19, 25-22, 25-8

St. Lucy's def. Ayala, 25-21, 25-12, 25-18

You are right about that SL VB Fan...
Bonita has struggled with the exception of beating L.A. against big time teams.
Today they play Walnut and Tomorrow they play BRENTWOOD, who went 5 with Campbell Hall. Campbell Hall is #1 in the division. I think Brentwood is #2.
my only issue with putting Bonita second is that they really haven't played any of the local teams, other than the win over LA. They lost to Claremont in 5, which is a team Walnut beat in 3. Tonight's game for them against Walnut is huge as far as local rankings go.
With Glendora's loss last night, that obviously changes their position significantly, probably dropping them down as far as 6th.
So Glendora looses to Ayala....Do they stay Second in the rankings?
Today Bonita plays Walnut.... I dont know about the rest of you, but I sure feel that the newspaper should be there at full force!
Bonita: They have a great setter with big outsides... Middles are not bad, but not the best, Opposite is not bad either. Blocking is good and passing is good. Serving, THEY BRING IT. Defense I would say is average, but thats OK with the block they bring.
Walnut.... SCRAPPY SCRAPPY SCRAPPY... They will wear you out... Best libero in the area, hitting and setting is nothing great but are very solid, and the team works well together. They dont have the big guns like bonita, but are very error free. Middles might be a little better then bonita....
Santa Margarita vs. Maricosta (the SGV version)
Great win Ayala. Not surprised though. Ayala looked like a much better team overall.
Definitely give details for this weekends tournament.
As for the arguement of who should be first and if SL and Bonita should be tied for 1st??? Bonita is a great team but SL has had 14 wins since the LA game.
Congratulations again to Ayala. They are a strong team and deserve to be a CIF contender.
Any details on Ayala's win over Glendora? By my count, Sierra League standings are:
1. SL 5-0
2. Ayala 4-1
3. Glendora 3-2
4. Chino Hills 2-3
5. DB 1-4
6. Chino 0-5
Nice win by Ayala! Anyone have any info on who will be at the Ayala Tournament this weekend?
The Big 6 records against the local top 10's
St. Lucys-2-1 Glendora(w) S.H.(w) L.A.(L)
Walnut 2-2 L.A.(w) S.D(w) Glendora(L) S.H(L)
S.Hills 1-2 Walnut(w) L.A(L) St. Lucy's(L)
L.A. 2-2 St. Lucy's(w) S.H.(w) Bonita(L) Walnut(L)
Glendora 1-1 Walnut(w) St. Lucy's(L)
Bonita 2-0 San Dimas(w) L.A.(w)
The other interesting thing is how many of these matches went 5 sets. Most of them. Bonita's were both sweeps. With this knowledge I think I would have to go with this as my top 10
1. St. Lucy's
2. Bonita
3. Glendora
4. L.A.
5. South Hills
6. Walnut
7. San Dimas
8. Bishop Amat
9. Diamond Bar
10. Ganesha/ Gladstone
Yes St. Lucys is on cruise control!!! good for them!
Bonita has the best record against the valley, even better then St. Lucys because they beat L.A.
Walnut, Glendora, South hills, and Los Altos all have beat up on each other
Walnut beat Los Altos (by their skin of their teeth, but a win is a win). Los Altos beats St, Lucys in 3, then looses to Bonita in 3. But beats South Hills.... Sheesh
Walnut beats L.A. then looses to Glendora, and South Hills. Walnuts only other decent wins are to San Dimas and Claremont.
Im starting to think that Bonita should be TIED for first with St. Lucys, I dont have a reason why they shouldnt be.
Glendora beat walnut but lost to St.Lucys, I really dont see any other big wins.
good luck fred!
The South Hills flip flop last week really is going to throw the "big 6" into disaray. We may need to come up with a different name because it is actually St. Lucy's and the other 5.
Off the top of my head, I think Bonita is the only school to have no losses against area teams. They have not lost to anyone in the top 10. The only team they have lost to that an area top 10 has beaten is Claremont. Bonita lost in 5 and Walnut swept Claremont. If Bonita beats Walnut tomorrow then they have a legitimate claim to be number 2. If they lose tomorrow then who knows.
Those matches for South Hills last week get repeated again in two weeks, so there will be a lot more movement. Ghigh said it best=Parity.
CIF Polls are out!
Division 2-AA
St Lucys 6th
Glendora 8th
South Hills 10th
Division 3-A
Bonita 4th
Los Altos 9th
Division 3-A
Ganesha 5th
Gabrielino 6th
These need to be flipped get with it CIF
Division 4-A
La Puente 9th
Gladstone 10th
La Puente beat Gladstone in 3 last week to take the lead in the Montview. Might deserve that 10th spot?
yeah, definitely see your point regarding Glendora. Probably won't face much of a challenge in league outside of SL. It was tough to put them there, and only did because of the losses the other teams have had and that they were topped ranked the week before due to their early wins.
Regarding LA, good point. Forgot to factor in that game, which was big. Just have a tough time jumping them over SH, Walnut and Bonita. I will say that all those 5 teams are a toss up and each can make an argument over the other.
Glendora lost to St. Lucys in 3 on 10/08, yet you have them 2nd. Wins against Chino Hills and Diamond bar, are not considered big wins,at least not this year....
The only big win I see in Glendora's schedule is against Walnut.
Would you agree?
SL VB Fan, I would have agreed with you if South Hills would have beaten Los Altos. But Los Altos beat South Hills on Tuesday, and then South Hills Beat Walnut on Thursday...
for the last two weeks you have mentioned that L.A. was riding on ONE good win... Does the win against South Hills count???
You have Glendora 2nd but they lost to St. Lucy's in 3. Lets see how they do against Ayala tonight.
Bonita and Walnut... Toss up... Both have had some good wins.. Lets see what happens
tomorrow... Bonita has big hitters and an awsome setter.. Walnut has some serious defense led by an awsome libero. I would wait for the results of tomorrows game before making my final decision).
Bishop Amat is tough to rank... They play teams outside of our area, La Selle, St. Josephs, St. Paul, Bishop Montgomery... I will say this... I at least give them credit for having a tough schedule... Would they beat San Dimas... I dont know...
This week is tough to rank as south hills was beat but then they came back and beat walnut...
I will take a stab at the new top 10. Not much change but some short shuffling around.
1. St. Lucy's - Still hasn't lost a game in league
2. Glendora - Has beaten some tough teams. With benefit of how some of the next 4 teams have beaten up on each other, I have to move them into #2 slot. needs to stop giving up games to lesser teams in order to not be jumped by one of the other teams facing tougher competion in league play.
3. South Hills - inconsistent but came up with big win over Walnut last week. Only because of that win can I move them above Walnut in poll. Need to have some big sweeps to show dominance.
4. Walnut - Loss to SH hurts them. Big game against Bonita tomorrow.
5. Bonita - other than sweep over LA and close 5 game loss to good Claremont team, has only beaten bottom poll teams. Needs to beat Walnut tomorrow to climb up.
6. Los Altos - can't ride on win over SL entire season. Needs to beat Bonita.
7. San Dimas - impressive win over Ganesha
8. Ganesha - Getting swept against S.D. hurts, but don't think enough to drop anymore than 8th.
9. Bishop Amat - Solid team took S.H. to 5 and beat Chino Hills in 5. This may be too low for them.
10. Gladstone - Not sure about Gladstone. Any other team threatening to break top 10?
Games for today and Tomorrow:
Today:
Glendora vs. Ayala (glendora, I think)
St. Lucy's vs Chino (St. Lucys)
Diamond Bar vs Chino Hills (not sure)
Tomorrow:
Los Altos vs. Charter Oak (los Altos)
Ganesha vs. Covina (Ganesha)
San Dimas vs. Northview (san dimas)
Bonita vs. Walnut
Best games would be Glendora vs. Ayala and Bonita vs. Walnut in my opinion of course.
Ganesha's Frosh/Soph Tourney results (top 6):
1st Bonita
2nd Charter Oak
3rd Pomona
4th Troy
5th Diamond Bar
6th Covina
Last Ganesha tournament of the year!
I don't think there is much fear in volleyball. I get your picture though and I will lay off the respect talk.
Ganesha's Frosh/Soph tourney is going well. Troy looks like the team to beat so far.
Im not sure how your league doesn't get much respect. You are the most believed team on these blogs and everybodys sings your praises. Your percieved feeling of no respect may be that nobody in your league can beat any top teams. San Dimas was beat soundly by Bonita and Walnut, and it appears you guys were beat soundly by San Dimas.
People respect your league, I just dont think people fear your league. See the difference?
San Dimas Def. Ganesha easily 3-0. They played like a prepared team with excellent quicks (passing, serving, setting, and hitting were on) while we made mistakes and couldn't get rhythm. We can play better, but they played awesome and as said before, our league gets very little respect. San Dimas continues to improve and we hope we will too, so the team met in preseason may not be the team that is seen in league or playoffs.
Back to the drawing board. Have a great weekend. CIF is only 3 weeks away!
South Hills beat Walnut
Los Altos beat South Hills and lost to Walnut and Bonita.
Maybe #2 is Bonita and #3 Los Altos???
Thoughts?
I agree with GH. Lots of parity. It looks like SL will continue to be thr front runner for a bit of time.
Since we are now back on line, other than sh/walnut, what were the results from Thursday night play?
SL beat DB in 3, scores 18,17,12
Ganesha's only losses are in tournament play! Of course tournament play should effect rankings-that's actually one of the reasons why teams play in tournaments-to hopefully move up in CIF rankings.
So Walnut lost to South Hills in 5? Lots of parity in the SGV.
Biggest match of the year (so far) for us and San Dimas. Hopefully our experience will prevail, although some argue that age doesn't matter. I disagree and I hope our eleven seniors and one junior can stay composed.
I agree that tournament play should not effect rankings. It is a good opportunity for a coach to give some of their support players a more prominent role. Obviously everyone wants to win the tourney, however winning league is more important.
OK,
I dont know how you people figure out who is the person behind they typing of the blogs... Let me know....
I am no LA fan....
But continuing on with this topic.
LA losses to Bonita (ranked 4th)
BUT
LA beats South Hills (ranked 3rd)
How do you come up with the proper rankings...
St. Lucy's is not even part of the conversation anymore....As there schedule is looking perfect for them..(Get ready for playoffs)(you already beat glendora in three along with ayala)
Walnut, South Hills, Bonita, L.A., and Glendora still have a tough schedule...
Intresting stuff...
San Dimas went 5 with Gabrielino and lost
Ganesha lost in 2 to Gabrielino in tournament play.
San Dimas has played some good teams : Gladstone, Gabrielino, Walnut and Bonita
Ganesha has played; Gabrielino and estancia and lost in straight sets...
So I agree with the other bloggers....
Ganesha and San Dimas would have a tough time with the top six.....
St. Lucys may be in that top spot for the next 2 years.
Vball: A loss is a loss but have to agree with Migraine 2. If we look at all the blogs, no loss has been mentioned as much as this loss.
Should we start off with every blog "When LA got swept by Bonita." We can. Especially since that was the most recent and most relevant. I can't decide which is my favorite part. Where the LA parent calls out Bonita's setter by calling her inexperienced next to LA's setter or when the Bonita setter called the LA team out (Like Babe Ruth calling out his shot) that you guys were going down and did.
Keep going Regents!
Great topics.
Volleyball Insider/Pot stirer- Record wise Ganesha is impressive but like the other bloggers said they have no wins against the top 10. If and (more likely)when they do beat San Dimas that will be their first win against a quality, top local opponent. All of the Big 6 have played eachother and beaten eachother. San Dimas has played two the Big 6. They were swept by Bonita and Walnut. If Ganesha gets an impressive sweep I guess they could argue that they belong but I dont see them beating any of those Big 6. I wouldnt know who to bump out. If he re-ranked the teams today it may be that S. Hills is at 6 and I have a hard time believing Ganesha is better than S. Hills. If S. Hills beats Walnut tomorrow its going to throw this whole thing upside down again.
Regarding the Ayala tournament and its affect on the rankings, I have talked to one head coach that says they will be missing substantial players due to SAT or ACT tests or something. I remember last year Los Osos and a couple of other teams were missing a ton of girls in the morning matches. That plus the 2 out of 3 format means you have to take outcomes with a grain of salt in relation to rankings.
wow that was long winded....
Ganesha has never been invited to the Ayala tournament, but wouldn't go anyway because we always go to the Gabrielino tournament.
Naturally I disagree with bloggers feeling we couldn't hang with the top six. I can't say we would beat them for sure, but I think we would have a hot against any of them. We have decent size and pretty strong defense with the best libero around. We didn't play Estancia particularly well, but all games were close and they are D. 1 with all club girls.
In terms of not moving up because we don't play any of the top six that makes some sense, but we have moved up in the Div. 3-A rankings and the only team we played was Gabrielion in a tourney and we lost! If teams in the top six keep losing and we keep winning I think we should move up, but I am very biased!
Thanks for the compliments and for stirring the pot. We really need to take care of business now or all of our hard work will be in vain!
San Dimas vs. Ganesha will be a good match.. From what I see on Max Preps... They have played almost all the same teams...
Both of these teams lost to Gabrielino, San Dimas beat Gladstone but lost to Bonita.
Ganesha and San Dimas both have beat teams like Rowland, Northview, Baldwin Park, and Pamona....
I dont think any of these mentioned teams can give any of the top 6 a challange. They are like USCs football program to much depth and club experience to challange them.
Ganesha is doing an outstanding job.... but its tough to rank them when they havent battled with any of the top six (current).
Same topic came up last year...
This year all top six teams have battled one way or another.... I dont know if Ganesha can hang with the big time teams....
Ghigh do you have them in the Ayala Tournament at Club West?
Much like in the CIF rankings...
They will not move you up unless:
you beat a ranked team in your division and/or a ranked team in a higher division....
Beating a ranked team from a lower division doesnt mean anything to them.
Migrain 2 unfortnately a loss is a loss.... it cant go away until next season.
Looking at St. Lucys schedule, it appears that they will not be challanged again until playoffs. Which means they will end up ranked 1 in the valley.... Thats if they dont have any hick ups or if tournament play matters....
I dont know what teams will at the Ayala tournament....hmmm ...If St. Lucys plays some of the ranked teams and looses... Should it make a difference in the rankings???? Its tournament play..... Who determines this?
Ok, I'm ready to stir the pot here. I think if Ganesha takes San Dimas down on Friday, then they deserve to be somewhere in the top 6.
Let the smack talk begin...
By the way, congratulations to the Regents for continuing there quest for their League title.
Congratulations to Los Altos on a big win over South Hills.
You guys are right, it does give headaches. I think a wise man(or woman) said at the start of the season that the top teams would take turns beating up on eachother and no one would run the table.
Depending on what happens with Walnut's next two vs South Hills and Bonita, I think we may see St. Lucy's pulling away from the pack(the big 6)
It gives me a migraine too when St. Lucy's is 13-3 and we are STILL hearing about the loss to Los Altos as the opening comment.
Just look to the future games ahead as there is a whole lot of season left to be played.
Did Los Altos win in 5 or 4? The scores listed are for only four games but the fourth won shows a 5th game total point.
Here are the Los Altos vs South Hills Scores:
LA 25, SH 23
LA 23, SH 25
LA 25, SH 11
LA 15, SH 9
this is giving me a migrane.
St. Lucy's lost to Los Altos
Los Altos lost to Walnut
Los Altos lost to Bonita
South Hills lost to Los Altos
South Hills lost to St. Lucy's
Glendora lost to St. Lucys
Walnut lost to Glendora
Now walnut has South Hills on Thursday and Bonita on Tuesday.....
St. Lucys cruises Thursday and Tuesday
Los Altos Cruises Thursday and Tuesday
Glendora has Chino and Chino Hills (they should win both).
To early to say that SL will run the table, especially after seeing another team show up for the LA's game. Hopefully the leaders on the team keep the young team grounded and not let them get to far ahead of themselves. They need to continue to treat each game like it is for the title.
Looks like the CH and Glendora matchup was a close one. If CH's manages to pull that 4th game out, it could have been anyones. I was impressed with CH's defense and think they have a legitimate shot at 2nd place in the Sierra. They are going to have to take down Glendora the next time around.
Los Altos just beat South Hills in 5.
You cant put St. Lucy's at 1. What are they going to bi er talk about?
Just kidding congrats SL fans, I dont see a loss on the horizon on the rest of your schedule, looks like you will own the top spot till the playoffs.
St Lucy's sweeps Ayala in 3. Nice job regents!
Ganesha Def. Pomona 25-13, 25-18, 25-21 in the battle of married coaches. Ganesha is now 14-3, 3-0 in Valle Vista.
Friday San Dimas at Ganesha for a chance at a league championship!
