Girls Volleyball Top 10: St. Lucy's sets the pace

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TOP 10
1. St. Lucy's (21-4)
2. South Hills (13-5)
3. Walnut (14-4)
4. Bonita (11-6)
5. Los Altos (13-4)
6. Glendora (7-3)
7. San Dimas (16-4)
8. Ganesha (17-4)
9. La Puente (12-10)
10. Gladstone (20-6)
Comments: St.Lucy's is still is the barometer, winning two league matches by sweeps last week. South Hills takes advantage of Walnut's win over Bonita and moves into No. 2, with the Mustangs claiming No. 3. Bonita grabs No. 4 by following up the loss to Walnut with a victory over Division 3-AA power Brentwood. Los Altos rounds out the top five after taking care of business. A few words about the rankings: I base my rankings how a particular team is doing that week. If a particular team is No. 4, they hold at least that position, unless, in my view, they have played their way out, either by losing or not playing up to expectations against a particular opponent. If a team is rated No. 3 one week, they meet expectations by winning, and the second-ranked team loses, the move up. It's no different than what the Associated Press does with its rankings. AP moved Alabama up to No. 1 after Florida was sluggish the week before, then moved them back after Alabama almost lost the next week. No different here.
UPDATE: St. Lucy's rallies to beat Glendora, 22-25, 25-16, 26-24, 29-27
Deanna Dalton and Alissa Young had 14 kills each to lead the Regents (23-3, 7-0), who rallied back from a 12-4 deficit to outlast the stubborn Tartans (7-4, 3-2), who received 19 kills from Valerie Brain.
Glendora led 12-4 in the third game and 17-10 in the fourth, but couldn't hold off St. Lucy's, which clinched the match on back-to-back kills by Jasmine Warmington and Brenda Moscoso. There was also a funny set of circumstances in the second game. Glendora won the first game, 25-22, and jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second when game officials noticed a line-up discrepancy in Glendora's rotation. They ruled to restart the game. But this time St. Lucy's jumped out to the early advantage, taking leads of 7-3 and 17-7 before winning, 25-16.
St. Lucy's coach Sean Douglas: "This is a group where I can challenge them, and they like to rise to challenges. I don't like playing matches like this, when they are crazy. But when push comes to shove, we push pretty hard, and I'm proud of them."
Glendora coach Jennifer Barbone: "I had never seen that before. But I tell my girls all the time that you can't make execuses, so that's not an excuse. You have to play no matter what."
Bontia def. Los Altos, 25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 25-21
Stats: Allie LaPierre (B) 25 kills, Katie Kirby (B) 21 kills, Victoria Dennis (B) 10 kills.

vball? They were playing patty cake at the Gabrielino tourney? On which court? I must have missed that?
Maybe the Ayala tourney has higher level teams in general, but there were 32 teams at Gabrielino and yes, Diamond Bar won the tournament. Diamond Bar also beat Ayala! Oh, and Gabrielino beat Los Altos two years ago to advance to the quarterfinals. Volleyball is an interesting sport and you never really know who will win for sure, unlike patty cake which you are an expert at!
Not much to say about the game last night, other than it was a very disappointing performance on SL's part, especially heading into the last week of the season and getting ready for CIF. This was a continuation of the way they played against Glendora, however Ayala was able to capitalize down the stretch. SL's won the first two games somewhat easily but then some key players seemed to just stop playing. Hopefully they quickly realize they need to be hungry or like someone else stated, it could be a quick run out of CIF.
Diamond Bar fans come out to play all of a sudden..... Well while you were playing patty cake at the Gabrielino Tournament, the Valley teams toughed it out at the ayala tourney....
Im an L.A. fan... and I will say St. Lucys has improved and play as a team (it was very noticable at the tourney)... Good Luck....
Not all L.A. fans like drama... Some just like good competition and good volleyball.

We play San Dimas on Tuesday. Most coaches want to be in the top 7 of their division, even though according to CIF they only seed the top four.
If St. Lucy's is in first they are guaranteed a 3rd place team from another league, but after that it could get tough.
In Division IIAA only the top 4 matter for seeding. And nobody from the SGV is going to be in the top 4. I think it's been the same 4 all year long. St. Lucy's and Ayala were both ranked this week so there will be a drop for ST. Lucy's but probably not out of the top 10. If they win league that loss probably wont affect them in regards to CIF.
Diamond Bar is making a push for the playoffs. They have taken 4 out of the Sierra in years past. But I never seen 5. With Chino Hills, Ayala, DB, StL, and Glendora it is going to be really interesting for those last couple spots. Next weeks games will be huge.
Is today the big San Dimas-Ganesha tilt?
I just hope they don't drop St. Lucy's too far in the CIF rankings. They just don't treat area teams well if they don't go undefeated in league. Last year San Dimas was ranked 7th when we beat them and they dropped out of the rankings and we moved to 8th. This year Ganesha was 5th when SD beat us and they dropped us to "others" and moved San Dimas to 7th.
We'll see what happens on Monday-rankings now will determine seedings.
Can you hear us now?
Diamond Bar is on another must win situation. We got St. Lucy and Chino Hills next. Thank you Ayala for another gift besides losing to us and give us confidence against St. Lucy next week. Remember last year, we handled them in 5 games last year at our house. It is going to to be interesting to see if we can pull it out and make it to the playoff.
Any Ayala fans got any insight on how to win over St. Lucy again? Los Altos fans please jump in on it too.
It sure got really quiet in this blog after the Ayala upset St. Lucy last night. Anyone got details on that game??
when St. Lucy's and Los Altos both lose it sure gets quiet around here.
I knew we couldnt go 2 days without an upset. Wow!. St. Lucy's falls and Bonita goes 5 with Diamond Ranch. That Diamond Bar victory over Ayala on Tuesday is now huge, because we could have been looking at another championship split if Ayala and St. Lucy's both run the table.
Baldwin Park Spikers-Im not sure Walnut jumps over S. Hills into the top spot next week. They play at Walnut on Tuesday. If S. Hills wins they are league champs if Walnut wins its a split championship.
Im not sure how it will look next week but perhaps something like this:
1. South Hills
2. Walnut
3. St.Lucy's
4. Bonita
5. Los Altos
6. Glendora
7. San Dimas
8. Ganesha
9. Diamond Bar
10. La Puente/Gladstone
I dont know how far you drop St. Lucys, but with Steve's comments from last week on when teams lose, Im assuming they will drop a few spots.
New poll for next week should be:
1. Walnut
2. Bonita
3. St. Lucy's
4. South Hills
5. San Dimas
anyone else got their top 5 ?
Shocking news???
Can anyone confirm AYALA beat St. Lucy's in 5 games tonight? Anyone got the latest scores?
Not so shocking news!!
LA did lose to South Hills in 5...kind of disappointing...
Yes, that is my wife's team. We both know and love each other's players, but when the game starts good sportsmanship is not always guaranteed. I think we are both glad we don't have to play each other anymore in league (we are going to scrimmage next year). Besides, her team is young and they have some young hitters that should be outstanding in a year or two.
FYI-we play San Dimas on Tuesday. Hoping to have some press coverage and maybe we can get some blocking up front. Maybe it's time for a 6-2?
Where is the LA-S.Hills smack talk.? The LA fans have been suspiciously quiet after their loss to Bonita.
Good point vbl. No wonder there was great sportsmansip at the Ganesha/Pomona game.
Regardless, way to put the focus on Breast Cancer Awareness. That is a nice way for a cross town rivalry to meet. No matter who you are married too.
Is Pomona your wife's team Ghigh?
Good Luck Ghigh. Thursdays game is a big one for you. Do you think you can pull it out? Your frontline will need to come up big against their outsides.
Suprise win by Diamond Bar over Ayala. More proof that Sierra League is just that tough and that good. DB had a slow start but GHigh may have been right about this last tourney may have been what the team needed to start playing as a team.
Thursday Night Games
LA @ SH
Glendora @ Chino Hills
Ayala @ SL
Ganesha Def. Pomona 31-29, 25-23, 25-11. Crazy match. Best I've ever seen Pomona play-they were upping everything and their offense has improved. It's going to be a real battle between them and Northview on Tuesday for third place in the VVL.
Great sportsmanship all the way around. Both teams wore pink shirts in honor of breast cancer awareness. After the match our 11 seniors and their parents were honored then both teams ate cupcakes!
CIF is getting closer by the minute! Big match for us against San Dimas on Tuesday at San Dimas.
LA fans is this going to be a repeat of a few weeks ago- lose to Bonita and then beat S. Hills?
With Ayala's loss last night, that pretty much wraps up the league title for SL's. Nice job DB on a much needed win!
SL's has already faced REV in the summer league. They beat them (without Vansant) and took them to three with her. You put a couple of blocks on her and it changes their whole game. SL's also came very close to beating Beckman this year, so I think they are up to the challenge. I think a CIF victory this year would be very tough, but I do see them possibly making it to the finals.
What can I say...I thought we had SL and periods of time it was close. Proud of our team. It was a much different game than we were originally swept. Brain just was on fire last night and did a tremendous job. SL could not stop her. Noriega owned the back court for us last night.
I have to hand it to SL front row. I was impressed with there setter Macy who really mixed it up last night. The paper highlighted Dalton and Young who are great players and delivered the hard shots. SL Callen made the difference on the front line with her defense. Lost count how many blocks/block touches she had. Thought she showed up big.
Great game. Sierra is strong.
It will be very difficult for anyone, including St. Lucy's to beat REV this year as they have basically the same team as last year that won CIF. That being said S.Hills did suprise them and take them to 5 sets last year. I do think St. Lucy's has the best chance to go the farthest in Division IIAA this year. It just depends on the draw. If you get REV or Corona Del Mar early it could be lights out.
Next year will the best chance for STL to bring home the banner
Good win for DB last night. As for the rankings yesterday was the first day in a long time that the favorites actually both won.
To LA Fan: Your team loses to Bonita (again) and you post a blog at 1:17 in the morning about St. Lucy's not winning CIF??? Really. That is classic. Your team can't even win their own league and your making slams against SL?
I think St. Lucy's is on track to win CIF this year or next. The whole team (minus one)are juniors and sophomores and has learned a great deal since that LA game. Last night was a great example. We looked exactly like the LA game for a moment in time but this time the girls knew how to get past the mental block.
There are so many quality teams in this area (including yours). Support the SGV.
LA Fan: Are we really going there? Wouldn't you want St. Lucy's to win CIF then you could say, "we beat the D.2 CIF Champ in three!"
Diamond Bar beat Ayala in five yesterday, according to the Daily Bulletin. Congrats to them. Looks like the Gabrielino tourney helped them find their mojo.
Gabrielino lost to Monrovia in their own tournament. Are the Lady Cats that good?
years in years out ....what are the chances St. Lucy going to win CIF this year...30% chance??
Much closer games tonight in both of the big games. No sweeps!
Glendora looked much better tonight then they did in the first match up against SL's. Brain did an excellent job of hitting around the blocker for most of the match. They just weren't able to finish when she ended her rotation. SL's came out slow and made a lot of unforced errors in the first game but was able to finish strong. Even after being down 10-17, they were able to come back and take the match. Good job Regents!
vbl,
Bearcats take Los Altos in four: 25-22,25-18, 21-25, 25-21.
S/L in 4 over Glendora, Bonita in 4 over L/A
LA is the only team to beat the top two ranked teams, yet they are ranked 5th and rightfully so. Lets see if they can change that tonight. Post results when you get them.
