Inside the St. Paul-Bishop Amat rivalry

With seemingly all the history and present factors stacked against it, maybe it's fitting that the St. Paul High School football team is looking for venerable coach Marijon Ancich to lead it to a victory versus archrival Bishop Amat on Friday. The visiting Lancers (5-0 overall) ride into the 7:30 p.m. contest as high as they've ever been this decade, two weeks removed from a stunning victory over state power St. Bonaventure, 24-23.
Bishop Amat is ranked No. 11 in the entire CIF-Southern Section by calpreps.com and is eighth in the Pac-5 Division in this week's CIF-SS poll.

"We know we're up against an incredible team," Ancich said, "obviously one of the best Amat teams in years."

St. Paul (3-2) is on a three-game losing streak against the Lancers, last falling in 2007 in a 31-30 triple-overtime road thriller in which Swordsmen running back Luis Garcia tripped right before the goal line on a rain-soaked field on a two-point conversion attempt.

The last time St. Paul defeated Amat was in 2000, when the Ancich-coached Swordsmen romped, 31-3.

St. Paul has an overall record of 15-24-2 versus Amat heading into Friday's 42nd edition, but Ancich owns a career mark of 13-11-2 against the Lancers.

Ancich also holds two distinctions.

He snapped Bishop Amat's 15-game, 17-year-long winning streak in the series in 1999 with a 25-9 win.

Previously, Ancich guided St. Paul to its longest winning streak of the series of seven games between 1975-1981.

In fact, it was that 1981 Angelus League contest that he remembers most fondly.

"That game seems like eons ago but I remember that we played five overtimes," Ancich said of the 42-35 St. Paul win. "Everyone thought it was over after four overtimes.

"In fact, there were 2,000 people on the field that had to be removed before we could start with that last overtime."

For as much success as he's had, Ancich is the first to admit that all that matters Friday is the present.

"We're about as healthy as we're going to get and we're getting ready for a tough game," he said.

St. Paul is coming off a bye week that followed a 35-0 defeat to St. John Bosco, but the Swordsmen still have a lingering quarterback issue.

Seniors Paul Lopez and Chris Willson split time at quarterback against Bosco.

Lopez was 9 of 13 for 75 yards while Willson completed 5 of 11 passes for 70 yards, including a 40-yard throw to receiver Adam Padilla.

As of Wednesday, Ancich hadn't named a starter but hinted that a selection will be made today.

"We'll make a decision after (Wednesday's) practice, after I get a chance to see how both look," he said. "I put both in against Bosco to try to get a rhythm going, to see who responded better."

The good news for St. Paul is that both running backs Drake Griffin and Deion Williams will be available.

Ancich quickly dispersed the rumor that Griffin had been suspended for a game after the junior kicked an official's flag early in the fourth quarter.

"That's incorrect," Ancich said. "I don't understand where that started but I've had to answer that question all week."

As for the question of how to defeat Amat, Ancich was direct.

"We have to cut down on the mental errors on offense and be more consistent on defense," he said. "If we do that, we'll have a chance."

jcaz,
Of course what you saw at the end of the game was expected and it should be no other way . I don't believe there has ever been a brawl or a sign of disrespect between these teams after a game. The rivalry is nowhere as intense as in the past simplly because we do not face each other every season in every sport as we did in the past. Many of the kids only know of the hate for the slime because of the old war stories that pass down generation to generation of LANCERS. I am sure you have seen our victory bell and heard it ring loudly after a win at home. Well one year the slime actually stole it from us and painted it in the colors of st slime. True story. So the hate is there but just not as bad as the old days. Now WC,CO,SH,Damien and so forth are our neighbors and those are not rivalries only bragging rights involved . So in closing it is too bad you missed out on the good old days when this game really meant a lot more than it does now afterall it used to be the last game of the season and usually the league title was on the line but I must say old or new we will not tolerate losing to the slime and that will never change no matter what your age.

LancerForLife. That sounds like a good game but I'm going to give the Nod to the 1981 - 5 overtime game as the best Amat vs slime game (even though Amat lost). You can't beat that game in terms of excitement, electricity and total game experience if ur a fan of HS football. The game was one of the all time greats.

The 1980 game was a classic but in 1971 we beat them 19-7 when both were 9-0 and ranked 1&2 in CIF. John Sciarra beat Jamie Quirk and Cliff Uribe made a great interception to seal it.

Go Lancers !!

Proud fan.....honestly? kmon, 16 can not hold Jerry or Rio's jock. Who cares what he did in a scrimmage against LA Banning and Jordan... His stats on the year 0-1 with one interception. I know the kid works very hard but honestly for you to say that the kid diserves a shot when Jerry has done nothing but win is pretty crazy...

I have learned during the frosh St. Paul game that many of the Amat Freshman Dad's have had past and current connections or relationships with St. Paul including one that coached many of their current players when their sons played together for the East LA Bobcats, and several having many close family and friends attending St. Paul.

As much as I can respect that, I still believe St. Paul is St. Paul The Slimebalz. And it runs very deep since I have been associated with Amat for the last 10 years. We've been spat upon, trash thrown at us as we walked out of the PIT with a large group of Amat fans, we've had our tires slashed and our antennas broken. Players including my son would tell me St. Paul players play dirty, talk smack and are always taking cheap shots. I tell them, that is not the players fault but the coaches that condone that type of behavior.

But as of today I can't help but feel sorry for that school....enrollment is down, most families are now sending their kids to Amat instead of St. Paul and after watching our Varsity humiliate their football team, I see that their spirits and rowdy fan support have vastly diminished.

On the contrary, I hope that in the long run St. Paul will survive these crushing economic times and that their football team restore their glory and competitiveness (except when they play us)so that we can continue this Love Hate Relationship and heated Rivalry. Without St. Paul is like USC not having Notre Dame. We dislike each other but we respect each other.

73,

It's kind of funny in how much irony there is in life sometimes. At the Diamond Ranch game I happened to have sat next to a family that, ironically enough, also sat next to me at the St Paul game. Anyway, there was this one gentleman there that happened to have actually graduated from St Paul high school several years ago. He told me that his compadre was sitting over on the St Paul side waiting for him to say hello, however, both of his two children were attending Amat, and a younger child, who must have been around 8 years old, was going to be a future lancer at some point down the road too. Boy, talk about conflicting emotions for this guy eh?

Anyway, we seem to have this reoccurring theme every time we play some of the local schools in our area. Often we see people who are our neighbors, or are even our family members on the opposite side of the field. In fact, at the West Covina game, I saw more than a few kids that my son went to school with when he was attending St Johns.

I guess that my point is that no matter how much we perceive our rivalries in sport to be, that in the end, we are all allot closer to one another than what we may actually want to admit. In fact my son tells me that many of his teachers and coaches at Amat have spouses who work or teach at many of the other schools in the area including Charter Oak, South Hills or wherever.

Heck, we may “hate the slime," but yet you have to say that it was more than a remarkable sight to have seen all those coaches and administrators at the end of that St Paul game, standing out there in the middle of that football field shaking hands and hugging each other.

Now tell me, is that something that we should have expected to see if we truly hated these guys ?

Oh and BTW Joe, ya, were gonna run the table this year. 10 and oh...

I have read some of these blogs and I've gotta tell you, call what I see makes a lot of sense. From tuning up your offense to giving other kids a chance to play. I don't know if any one read this mornings paper which said defense and special teams make up the difference as the head lines. As call w I see has said that has been the story all season. One player call wh I see didn't mention in an earlier blog is a QB that is probably as good as the other QBs we have. Though I also agree that it is the Srs job to loose. #16 when given a chance has done at times better than the others and most of the time with a 2nd string offense. Point of fact on two occassions blue gold game he goes 4-5 with one dropped pass and the following week was the only one to throw for two TDs in a scrimmage they had. Having said all that I still think that its the Srs job to loose.

It sure was gratifying to watch these awesome gutty kids beat up on our rivals. I just hope our D and S Teams don't let up. Nothing more needs to be said on that note. It doesn't matter how they've been wining, it sure has been fun watching them. "So. Far" and on that also, Davis Casaras your some kind of animal my man. Lastly, finally someone is seeing some what I've been saying on dads that live throuh the eyes of thier.kid. Rio is probably one of nicest kids I've come across but I also agree though he is a good prospect he's not this all everything a lot of people coaches and maybe even.because of the politics that are played think he is. What pressure his old man must have on him. Why he started over some Srs in BB makes me wonder. Talented, yes but not that talented to take a seniors spot as a freshman, give me a break. Especially when gimpy (Nieto) said he would never start a freshman in any ohis teams so much for his promises. In my opion it is the seniors job until he looses it in FB BB.or any other sport. I agree, Rudy, shut up and quit embarassing your son especially, no one gives a dam about you. GO LANCERS.

I have been to severval of Amat games. One things sticks out like a sore thumb. It is really sad that a individual person is always complaining about why his son is the best Qb at Amat and he never gets a chance. It is time to just shut-up and enjoy the victory like the rest of the Amat faithful. Please stop it already it is really old. Frankly embrassing for you and R. Ruiz to hear you cry all pratice long your son is the best. Stop it all ready. It is not his time yet accept it and the Amat world would be happy. Shut up and enjoy the game. jcaz,

Love the confidence and enthusiasm, but I would slow your roll just a bit with the "undefeated season" talk. It's a long tough season. Alemany knocked off Crespi (who put up 40= on Bonnies), Loyola is figuring out how to play without Barr and beat an undefeated Chaminade team, while of course, Notre Dame is Notre Dame. We've got a long way to go so let's worry about next week. Heck - I'd like to narrow it even more than that. Start with worrying about the opening kick... then we'll go for there - One pay at a time!

Tell me you don't remember some football wars that led to parking lot skirmishes, bleacher clearing brawls in the winter and brushbacks, collisions, and high spikes in the spring.

A word to the wise. Take care of your restroom needs *before* you get to SanteFe Springs... you don't want to encounter the toxic waste in the St Paul restrooms during the game.

Good Luck Lancers!

You got that right! When it comes to Amat vs. st slime match-ups there is definately no love lost. I have to give it to the freshman team, they played a great game. Very exciting game all around (on the field and in the stands). We have some hitters on that freshman team and the days of old will be that much closer as these guys mature. I will agree that me of the Amat fans could probably tone down the trash talking and unrulyness in the stands. We are Amat and we win with class and we lose with class. BUT, it is amazing how the slime creeps into your pores and makes otherwise rational people do st slimish things when in close proximity. Bring home the "W" tonight boys! Go Big Blue!

jcaz,
I remember a previous post by you on my remarks when speaking of the slimemen. Well my friend I see you got a little taste of the intensity of the dislike/rivalry we have for each other. Can you imagine all that trash talking in our old little gym. This dislike runs very deep in the bloodlnes. I don't know how long your affiliation with AMAT goes back but back in the day it was wild and as you saw still is going strong . Your cry for peace between us will fall on deaf ears because when it comes to AMAT vs st slime , as they say LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE.

Wow, what a difference a week or two makes in the eyes of the critics eh ? Just the other day, the folks who were the “professionals” in here were saying that Amat would be lucky to win just 5 games this year. Now, Amat is being called a juggernaut of a team by many of these same people, and to their chagrin, many of those same people are beginning to rank this “young and inexperienced team” in their top ten. Wow, what a turn around eh ?

Anyway, Amat is looking at potentially an undefeated season this year, but what makes it so funny, is that many of the bogglers who came in here and threw silly comments around are nowhere to be seen anymore. Like I said earlier, their silence is deafening.

Anyway, did anyone happen to catch that freshman game over at Kiefer yesterday ? Wow, talk about intensity. The atmosphere at that game yesterday was as electric s you’re gonna get ! I couldn’t believe all the trash talking and yelling that was going on, and what made it so entertaining was that the game itself was perhaps one of the most exciting games that any Amat team has played in the last three years ! It was that good of a game

Incredibly, there was a play where the swordsmen intercepted a pass in which their guy ran it all the way back for a touchdown. Then on the ensuing kick off (I think???), our guy runs it all the way back for a score.

Now, when we kick off to them, they in turn run it all the way back ! Crazy eh ? Well, I’m not done yet. When they kick off to us, yup you guessed it, our guy runs it back once again ! Incredible !!

Anyway, with all that excitement out on the field yesterday, you know that crazy stuff was bound to spill over into the stands.

Because of the heat yesterday, many pf the St Paul fans were seated on our side of the stadium. That in itself would not have really created to much of a problem if it were not for the fact that there were so many of them over there.

When their team got out to that early lead, I think allot of the Amat parents got very upset that those folks started to go way overboard in their celebration. Unfortunately, many of the Amat parents that were seated under that big canopy next to the announcers booth started to react in a less than a hospitable way.

There were at least two guys out there on the Amat side that were going toe to toe with the Swordsmen parents. I for one was very surprised that there wasn’t a fight up in the stands, but I think that we were very lucky in that these two groups were seated far enough away from each other that it really did matter too much.

Having said that, I have to tell you that I didn’t like all the trash talking that was going on up there yesterday. Maybe next time there should be more of an effort by these people to tone it down a little bit more, because all that stuff really took a lot away from that game yesterday.

Hey Fred, how about some credit where credit is due? That video you're using was made by Josh Guereque, a senior member of the William Penn Society at Whittier College and a St Paul Alumni ('06). His father, Larry, was a member of the 1981 undefeated championship St Paul team, and a participant in that five-overtime classic.
