Smudge Pot XXXVII, Bonita at San Dimas

What: Smudge Pot
When: Friday
Where: San Dimas HS
Kickoff: 7 p.m.
When it started: 1972
Series record: San Dimas leads 19-16-1
Streaky: San Dimas won 50-33 last year, its second straight win after snapping Bonita's three game winning streak prior. However, the Bearcats have won 10 of 13 Smudge Pots since 1996.
Records: San Dimas (3-1); Bonita (1-3).
Predictions: Robledo (San Dimas)
Thoughts: In my two years covering this, it has been Saints domination, and truly one of the special rivalries in the Valley. Get there early, seats go fast, and if you have never been to one of these, make plans on Friday. These are two teams that truly dislike each other, you won't want to miss it. The Bearcats have a worthy 9-3 win over Baldwin Park., but not much more. Last year Nico Barbone rush for 201 yards and five touchdowns, and Daniel Joseph rush for 219 yards and two touchdowns. They rushed for 454 yards in all. While I don't expect the Saints to pile up the same numbers, especially after they got manhandled by Monrovia, the Bearcats still have allowed 21 points or more in three losses, including a 43-22 loss to Santa Fe. See where I'm going with this, a Saints 3-peat.

What a complete Ahole! None of the Saints players were on steroids, just protein, vitamins, food and the "WEIGHT ROOM". Don't need enhance drugs when you have great work ethic..
Ken - thanks for calling out John Matthews for the idiot that he is. John - for you to come on this blog and call a 16-year old kid terrible is just plain stupid. Garret is working hard to improve so shut the hell up. What's worse is accusing the SDHS football team of doing steroids. I have no idea if they did or not, but, imagine that you don't have any hard proof at all. Fred - you always say that you don't tolarate unsubstantiated accusations of illegal activities. You should delete John's post to be consistent with that policy.
LOL
DONT FOOL AROUND
WITH WHACKIE TABACCIE.
IF I DID.I WOULD
GET IT FROM YOUR MOMMY BOY.
JOHN WAY TO GO TALKING ABOUT A YOUNG STUDENT
ATHLETE. YOUR A JERK OFF. GARRETTS GETTING BETTER EVERYDAY HE TAKES THE NEXT SNAP.
JOHN MATHEWS TRY A.A. JOHN IT WORKS ONE DAY AT A TIME..I THINK CALLING OUT PLAYERS BY THERE NAME SHOWS NO LOVE FOR THE SPORT.
ALL IT DOSE IS SHOWS WHAT A DEUCE BAG YOU ARE
MR. MATHEWS YOU STUD.K.H. GO TEAM BEARCATS
And CIF rings in Baseball mean what on the football field? That's right, nothing! I mean being the only freshman on that baseball team must have been cool...but that ring means nothing when it comes to Football. So therefore I have no idea why you brought it up.
Aaron, Doesn't take much & KH...
The QB from SD also has A CIF Ring as he was a starter on last year's baseball team as a Freshman.... So I don't think stats mean too much to him.... LMAO
Fred you're such a good wordsmith. I read your article this morning, hoping tomorrow's feature has something good for both teams.
Alright friends, today is the day where the future plays. JV and Freshman games. As well as walkthroughs for Varsity.
Go Bearcats.
Garrett Pendleton is terrible! Hes 6 foot 7 120lbs! San Dimas Will wreck him!!! To be fully honest Evan Highley should be playing qb for bonita! He would dominate san dimas defense. I like how san dimas thinks there running game is so tight...Barbone is gone just to let you know hes the only reason you guys have beaten bonita the last two years!! And him and their whole team was on roids last year... Basically both teams lost every good player they had from the last two years and are small and young. It will come down to who has the tleas penalties and mistakes! I like how san dimas acts so hard and has a Bonita dummie in their quad to hit. Just cause they have beaten bonita two years at football but have lost in every other sport! San Dimas is Whack
the sd stats on maxpreps say they have 156 of 200 plays rushing vs bonita's 113 of 203. looks as if sd puts the ball about 22% of the time, roughly half what bhs does.
KH
Damn, the weed is getting to your head! Where did you get that stuff? Maybe being high makes your dream big!
kh dad
my son k.c. is out for sure and looks like the next week against c.o. to. were shooting for the last four games, then three in cif to win the cif ringthats the plan go bearcats
Doesnt take much
We'll I guess SD will be playing another losing team and a nobody - Bonita!
Just remember, the same story from the bearcat fans, then they proceed to run up 726 yards over the last two years. Thanks for the Stat!
Now if that's not skill I wonder what is? LMFAO
Go SD!
it doesnt take very much to be the qb at SD all you have to do is hand the ball or pitch it and what were his stats against monrovia becuase thats the only team u guys have played that is good
Aaron,
The QB from SD Kennedy has 1 less TD than the Bonita QB with half the pass attempts and has only played 2 to 3 quarters per game. So to say the QB goes to Bonita, I don't think so... Also, he's just a sophmore so you guys will have to deal with him for 2 more years....
Good Luck....
First of all to argue which team is better at what is nonsense...with games that carry this much emotion it doesn't matter who is better or who has the best statistics...With rivalries this huge it is all about heart...I am very sure Coach Zernicow and Podley know this, and are drilling it into their player's head....Smudge pot has to do with heart not skill, that's what makes it such a great game....
Aaron
I agree 100%! NOBODY should want a kid to get injured or hurt! Just play the game hard and represent your school with dignity and pride. This is a great event, and we should enjoy the competive sprit(S) but lets pray all kids stay safe and healthy!
True Blue
Stop all the nonsense! These are our kids, and nobody should wish bad things or injuries on them!
Just play the game right/clean and hopefully they learn and have fun!
Good luck to both teams Friday night.
True Blue,
I don't know if it was you or someone else on here who said "they better have the ambulances running to San Dimas Hospital because we're going to be taking out Bearcats all night." That's not a good attitude at all, however you are right that football is a gladiatorial sport and that it should be fought with intensity and hard hitting. I have no doubt each of our teams Linebackers want to take the opposing quarterbacks down and keep him on the ground all night. But there's no reason to say you want to cause injuries that put kids in the hospital.
cacastain,
Yeah you're right and I hope the Bearcats line can open up some big holes all night to let Calvin and Holmes run through, both kids are really good.
Go Bearcats
Sd might have a good kicker but Evan is way better he has made a 48 yard kick in a game and a 58 yard in practice and had 2 60 yard punts this year

Rock, NO I am not an Expert but I don't understand why even the THOUGHT of something being wrong is seen as slamming the coaching staff.. As far as "How is it that COLLEGE coaches go to their practices every year" your answer might be better than mine so I can't wait to hear it but my lame answer is to learn a little of the westco offense, because they are changing philosophy, now you?
Can you honestly say I am slamming them by saying that they can't stop the Wing? come on now, two guys had over 400 yards and seven touchdowns, yes 7, that my friend is NOT being able to stop the Wing, so I don't see how my comment is slamming them. I Truly hope they can stop it and we get a big win but just because I HOPE it does not mean that the 400/7 did not happen, does it??? Offensively, they seem to have a great play book and my only concern is that in certain formations with certain personal, only 1 play is ran from that formation/personal combo. I guess that is slamming them too...sorry
K enough... this is not about them, it's about a great game this Friday, so lets go Bearcats get a big win...
Basic, are you a football expert. How is it that COLLEGE coaches go to their practices every year, not to get players, but to get ideas from the coaches yet you want to slam on them. Trust me, Coach Podley and Medina know what they are doing.
Aaron well I guess your pain motto is good for you so you won't be hurting forever, but remember this... the pain of losing Smudgepot is forever.
Outside looking in... are you kidding, SD has one of the best kickers in the SGV. QB is a toss up and so is secondary, but DL???? Both SD lines are better than Bonita. Bonita is soft, and slow.
SD wants to be physical and this will be a game of who can endure more pain. Sorry Aaron football is physical sport, gladiators if you will and you sir are a puss. You wouldn't make it over here and I know Podley was glad to see you leave. SD is bringing the wood so get ready for a WWIII.
aaron your wrong bonita is more of a running team this year
has anyone heard is KC Huth playing or is still sidelined with the broken foot?
sd mom
like your energy.
man i which my sons foot was ready, had it checked out yesterday x-rays not good.
ill still be pulling for our bearcats.am not even going too say wait tell next year..thats a cop out.bring it on .like devo said, the future is now..may the best team win..good luck sd.after the game. may we all rest in peace.i heard you guys have a bearcat hanging up on campus.and for a dollar you can take a swing at him with a bat..so you guys can bring weapons on campus.the old case of look the other way trick..
hopefully your canonize saints.on defense dont leave to many holy gaps, because the bearcats will sin sin back and forth all the way burning to the end zone .kh
Bearcat Alum,
The "Hate" question was for SGV and it was more in fun than anything, and he did respond and is now on board with the Mean Green Machine so you see it was nothing bad... I was not taking pokes at our players or being negative I was just pointing out what I THINK is obvious, just expressing my opinion on both the coaching front, about not being able to stop that Wing T and about the 5 picks, BUT if you read on I did say they won that game so EVEN if GP makes some mistakes on Friday they still got to believe, I thought that was somewhat encouraging... And you are wrong I CAN wait for Basketball but once it gets here then I am all in...
Outside looking..I really like that final score Bearcats 28 saints 24. But if I was betting on the game I see it as saints 24 Bearcats 17 just please let me be wrong...
Aaron.. Thanks for staying positive, I do hope we can keep it rolling
Hey Aaron
I like your comment(dig) "One Dimensional is horrid"! Could we say that for Bonita?
Sure we could, but who put up 726 rushing yards and 10 Td's and won over the last two years?
Ouch! I know that hurts..
Good Luck this year.
You're right on all counts, especially those questionable opponents. The only good defense SD has played was Monrovia...granted they only limited the Saints to 255 yards...however 204yds were accumulated by seven guys. And unlike against Magnolia SD couldn't pass worth a darn, all they could do was run...and being one dimensional is horrid, especially in a game like this.
You're certainly correct about who will win, it will be the group of guys that comes out and plays the hardest on that field.
Aaron
As you are aware, SD is a running team and Bonita passing. However, this year both squads seem to be pretty close on the passing attack, and Kennedy just has a beter Qb rating.Pendelton rating is 74 not 79!
The glowing difference is SD running attack! They simply are a better running team and have racked up 300+ per game and Bonita 97 per game. Futhermore, look who really hurting Bonita on the rushing front! The two QB's!
So, the question is can Bonita stop SD?
Now, people may question where did the yards come from and against whom? But it really doesnt matter because in a rivarly game and anything can happen. Last year same old agrument, then as Fred mentioned two kids put up 450+ and seven Td's..
So I guess if Bonita is going to win, they better play exceptional defense. And if you look at those stats, SD appears to have more tackles and sacks!
Interesting numbers, but numbers dont win games, it going to be who really wants it more!
I understand that there's a difference in offensive schemes but let's compare the QBs:
Shawn Kennedy: 19/39 for 328 yards, 4TDs and 2 INTs.
Completion %:.487 QB Rating: 91.
Garrett Pendleton: 42/78 for 504yds, 5TDs and 4 INTs. Completion %:.538 QB Rating: 79.
Through four games he had better numbers overall than Travis Santiago who did not surpass him in yards until Charter Oak's fifth game.
So I'm going to say Bonita has the edge in QB Battle but it depends on whether or not Garrett will step up. I don't know, but I think he's had pressure from everyone around him to put in the work, and he's responded well to pressure. Spathias did pretty well in the Santa Fe game, but the next week Garrett started which tells me he put in the hard work to keep his job.
This team has lived through adversity this season and because of it they are strong, I just hope they are ready to turn the corner...in fact I hope the corner was turned when they played Baldwin Park.
As a fan this is how I see the Game this friday
D-Line > edge To the Bearcats.
Linbackers > slight edge to the Saints
Secondary > toss up
O-Line > edge to the Saints
QB > edge to the Bearcats
Running backs > slight edge to the Saints
Kicking Game > edge to the Bearcats
Coaching > edge Bearcats
Home Field > Saints
Final Score Bonita 28 San Dimas 24
SD is a better team.
Very good defense.
Solid offense with a good running attack and solid QB.
Great rivalry.
Saints should take this one.
Good luck to both teams.
Go Saints!
To Basic:
Why Hate? You just can't help yourself. You have to continue to take a poke and be negative towards our players and our qb. We will see how you like it when basketball starts.
I wouldn't go that far Scott McMin led a rancid squad that went 2-8 in 2003. That year was bad and the team was decimated by injuries. That was a bad year, this year looks like we have the talent to compete if we can put a complete game together, and I think Pendleton can do it. He has the talent, I just hope he has put in the work the last two weeks in the film room and on the practice field.
Because I've seen two pretty good performances out of him this year: second half of the Claremont game, and he did pretty well at Baldwin Park even though the score doesn't tell you how well the really played.
If he puts a game together, and I think he will then all of us in La Verne will come home happy. Hopefully we have both Deron Holmes and Kenny Calvin because we'll need that running game.
Aaron
Pendelton has to be the biggest question mark in the history of Bonita's Qb's.
Can't agree with you quite yet. Sorry he's lacks alot of leadership and consistency..
Our defense will have to FINALLY stop SD, or its going to be a long night.
Thank God, that backfield is gone!
I'm not hating im just trying to add some fuel to the fire. Just fun and words. I guess I have to rout for San Dimas since there closer to me then bonita, but then Bonita is in our league. Coin flip okay im taking bonita this year.
SGV Football,
There is no tie in this game, but as far a thread is concerned, Fred already had one, why he didn't merge the comments I don't know.
True Blue,
Physical threats are dumb. Just to let you know one of those sayings: Pain is temporary, Pride is forever.
Blind Melon,
I like your music and your jokes.
Let's see what the Bearcats do on the field. The defense will do what they do and play stellar. However the question is will Pendleton come of age in this game and lead the offense down the field? I say he does and this sets the tone for the Bearcats the rest of the season.
I like bearcatfan's prediction, this will not be a shootout but a defensive struggle along with special teams play.
Why Hate SGV??? But really, I think you are probably closer to the truth both teams being weak, although this is a rivalry game so it always means something more and the kids seem to get up for this game which makes it fun to watch..errr except for last year... but it is fun for both of our little towns... Bonita's D has been one of the better surprises for me but I don't think the coaching staff has figured out how to stop the Wing T so it should be fun to watch. The O is at times shameful but they can put some really good plays together and look stellar and make it really exciting, so again it should be fun to watch... One thing to know is that this JR class for Bonita did beat SD as freshmen with GP at QB and having him throw 5 interceptions, yes FIVE, so even if he makes mistakes on Fri. I think the Bearcats still believe they can win, or at least I hope they do.
True Blue...I'm glad to see you have not blown up like you did a few weeks back, there really is no need to get ghetto up in here, that's what (fill in the blank) is for....Just having fun
Hey you guys asked Fred to put up a thread and this is all you guys have to say. 5 friggin comments weak!!! I think there will be a tie this year both teams are weak and the throphy will be housed at Bonita Unified School District office.
Top ten reasons San Dimas will win another smudgepot:
1.They wear Bishop Amat's colors
2.The Saints average sixteen more tackles per game, (but only .75 more Play plays on O)
3.Zernickow is taller than Podley
4.SD averages over 400 yards per game, (but only gained about ½ that vs Monrovia)
5.Home field advantage
6.Better pregame party, (get to the tennis court area early, ran out of lime jello shots in 07)
7.San Dimas' kicker has more than twice the points of Bonita's, must be 2X as good
8.San Dimas has ONE guy with more sacks than the whole Bonita team, (he even had one against Monrovia)
9.Bonita is already behind in the physical threats here on the blog about 6-0
10.No team with a losing record, (they have played LOTS of em), has beaten SD since 06
bonita will win 24-14 the saints are overrated and there smaller slower and weaker bonita wins at SD
To All Bearcats, especially Aaron... One Word...
PAIN!
Go Saints! 3-peat!!!!!!!!! The Saints are coming!!!!!!!
