Anything and anyone you want to talk about

Game of the week: Steve and I were debating this, is is undefeated Rowland-Walnut, the top two-ranked teams in the Southeast Division meeting in week one of the San Antonio League. Or is it traditional rivals West Covina and South Hills at Covina District Field?
Bishop Amat: What the Lancers did last night was impressive. What I thought could be a letdown turned into a confident group of guys who now have that swag. Roddy probably said it best when he said all is well in the San Gabriel Valley.
Athlete of the week: Need boys and girls athlete of the week nominations
Mid-term grades?: This week in the blog we will grade every team in the SGV, and start league predictions.
I knew we could all get along: Blog Harmony? It appears so after blog regulars Randy and Frank talked at the game last night and patched-up whatever differences they had.

Thursday's games
Northview vs. Pomona at Covina District, 7 p.m.
San Dimas at Ganesha, 7 p.m.
Friday's games
Rowland at Walnut, 7 p.m.
West Covina vs. South Hills at Covina District, 7 p.m.
Bishop Amat at St. Paul, 7:30 p.m.
Arroyo at Rosemead, 7 p.m.
Covina at Baldwin Park, 7 p.m.
Workman at La Puente, 7 p.m.

Lots of big games this week but the WC vs SH. game, the "Battle for Cameron Ave" has to be the game of the week, both teams are local teams and located next to each other, plus they appear to be pretty even, and the kids all know each other so the natural rivalry is intense. According to one particular WC fan that I know, we could loose every game of the season but if we beat SH then he is happy. Amat & St. Paul is a great rivalry but one of the schools is not local, as for Damien vs Chino Hills, great match up this year too, but you still have one of the teams that are not local.
Rowland and Walnut is interesting but I think Rowland wins big, Walnut struggled against teams that I think WC, SH, and Rowland would have had an easier time with.

Freddy you are missing the biggest game of the week, Chino Hills at Damien, a rivalry game now with both schools hating each other with passion now. Its a new rivalry based on the 06 Sierra League Football Championship game aka Mendrun short run as time expired.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eWS87HHheE
That game started this rivalry and its fierce, Chino Hills and Damien 2 of the 3 favorites to win the Sierra League, both teams coming off a bye and now healthy. Gano's chance at a marquee home win over a rival. I kno Damien hasnt lived up to expectation with a 1-4 record and Chino Hills is 4-1 but this game will be close and very good

All blue, you have to be kidding to think Jay Anderson should be athlete of the week. Yea he scored 4 td's but he ran 1 yrd on each td. Its not like he broke for long runs on each td.
Just another Amat fan with their head in the clouds!

SGV Football,

I was also at the game last night. To me Amat physically didn't look like anything special. The thing I was most impressed with was their ability to execute, #4's ability to make the first tackler miss, and their defenses ability to tackle. To me the play that summed up the night for DR was the kick-off that bounced off the return mans face mask then he slipped while trying to recover the muff. Amat was the better team, but DR competed hard and couldn't catch a break.
As for their QB, I think he was efficient in running their offense. I don't think they need him to do much more. I would have to see him in a tough game when they need him to throw the ball down the field. I think the CO/BA game would be a great match-up. I don't think that CO's offense would be able to consistantly move the chains against the BA Defense. I think I would be a great game for us fans to watch. Hay, at least all of us agree the it's Amat, Charter OaK 1 and 1A (Amat listed first Alphebetically) then there is all the rest. If both teams make it all the way to the championship games in their divisions against non SGV teams, I will root for both of them.

SGV FOOTBALL,

I respect opinions that at least come in with reasons "why" they think something might happen. Yours certainly might be a strategy one would think to employ. I guess, as with most strategies, the answer might be "easier said than done". Sure would be fun to find out.

I certainly think our receivers are underrated because they are not in the limelight. As St Bonaventure found out in overtime... Darien Johnson is a pretty big threat at receiver even in situational use. While you feel your receivers are "very good"(?) I think the inexperience and question marks at QB offset that. But that;s just me.

Here's how I think it would go down. (I wrote this after Fred's column on an imaginary CO/BA and "The King's all-time SGV fantasy playoff bracket. That also had a fantasy ending!:?)

"You said you like the CO defense vs Amat offense... I happen to like the reverse... Amat's defense vs CO's offense. Remember - that's a defense that shut out Bonaventure for the 2nd half of regulation and that was a Bonnie team that put up 40+ vs Crespi and dominated a very athletic (albiet young) LB Poly defense. Did you happen to watch that one on FoxSports. Bonnies looked unbeatable... and may be 9 out of 10 times. But not last Friday and that's all that matters. So "could" CO knock of Amat in a similar upset? Sure. I've said many times anyone on our schedule could beat us. That's the way your supposed to schedule. If they couldn't... why play?

Well. I guess, you'd just have to get an answer from a school that schedules differently for that answer.

So in a McConnell-esque fantasy scenario the Amat defense gives young, Santiago fits all night long. The Amat line dominates both sides of the ball and there are no running lanes for Muema and company forcing little Santiago to try to win with his legs and arm. CO is surprised to not have the speed advantage that they have against their normal schedule so receivers are not as open as usual. In a Romo-like performance Santiago's forced into numerous turnovers and Amat wins the takeaway battle once again. Much to everyone's dismay, Thropay remains on the sidelines only to wonder "What if...?"

CO's refusal to kick to Darien Johnson gives Amat good field position all night long and Jay Anderson has a big game behind the Amat line with Shay breaking some big runs as the Chargers try to key on Anderson. Amat finally pulls out the razzle-dazzle with a Ruiz to Johnson pass off a double-reverse and Amat seals the deal with a fade to big tight end Wallace Gonzalez over the undersized CO defensive backs. After the game Charter Oak legend Lou Farrar retires and CO Principal (Amat Alum and former VP) and AD Glen Martinez (former Amat baseball coach)throwing all nepotism guidelines aside and hires Tommy Salter (former Amat football coach) to head the football program so that they can someday "Be Like Lancers"

(Hey I said it was as much a fantasy as McConnell's all-time playoffs. It had to have just as outrageous an ending!)

Hello all Amat fans. As most of you know I am a Charter Oak fan foremost but I always rout for the SGV teams when they are playing outsiders. I went to the Amat game yesterday and I sat on the Amat side and chatted it up with some of the fans. P.S who was the old guy running with the Amat flag after touchdowns? I will have to back up Fred on his prediction that Charter Oak would edge out Bishop Amat. BA has a good fundamental team, but they do not have a passing game, Jay Anderson is a bull when he runs. Once they get to league they will expose this weakness. The reason why CO would win is because CO would stack the box and force the Qb to win the game for BA. If BA stacks the box against CO and does stop the run game they still need to contain to very good receivers, bishop amat doesn't have the receiving core to make the big plays down field, BA has a great defense hands down. Too bad it won't happen this year but hopefully sometime in the next three years we can all see this game at Mt Sac and sell that b!tch out to support both of these great programs. Please dont jump me on this post just get back to me with a good response no need to be so brutal. I went to the game and made a neutral decision based on what I saw, If you haven't seen CO play in peron try not to make an a$$ out of yourself.

I thought I would throw his out there. I was invited to go see my best friends son play a JAA football game at Pompei Park in Glendora. I get there hoping to enjoy a game with my buddy but to my surprise we ended up standing way off to the side because these arrogant self centered assholes bring these huge pop up tents and put them up right in the stands. I could not believe it. Here are these huge tents right in the stands. Not one, not two, not three but about five of six of them.Taking up all kinds of space blocking the view of not only me but forcing these nice elderly grandparents that I was standing with to watch way off to the side.I mean it was ridiculous. Those things take up like three rows.
If your so concern about staying out of the sun STAY HOME.And what made it worse it wasn't even hot out there it was cloudy.A couple of people were even standing on top of the cement picnic tables behind the stands just to watch the game. But what really ticked not only me off but others there was the arrogance to even put them up in the first place. It's just plain rude.
Go put your damn tents out in the endzone out on that infield or even back on that concrete area around the snack stand. But let the grandparents and others that would like to sit in the stands enjoy the game without having stand so far away enjoy it.
Pompei Park or the powers that be should know better because that is just ridiculous.

Fred,

You should consider finding the best team in the history of the san gabriel valley, who didn't win the cif championship.

It would be interesting what teams had the most hype or talent but came up short getting that CIF ring.

Great game last night for the Lancers

Diamond Ranch was frustrated and at one point had two personal fouls against them at the same time

Even though Diamond Ranch did not perform to their maximum ability, i applaud their effort to play a real tough Amat team... They were very respectful in the end handshake, and was a very respectful group of kids.

All of the taunts and mean things that were said on this blog by their fans is forgiven just by the great attitude of the players.

Good Job Diamond Ranch,

As For the Lancers, Keep Driving for a great season
and
BEAT THE SLIME!

Fred,

IMHO I think you should seriously consider giving this so called Guru a long vacation. His takes on SGV teams are way off base, disrespectful, biased and slanted favoritism towards SH and the IE.

Frankly speaking, posting Guru's garbage on your blogs will only further discredit your reputation as a fair and unbiased journalist. Take it for what it's worth, it's only one man's opinion.
