Your word, not mine, but since their sons have graduated i do think they have chilled out a bit with the whole ranting of "how badly the DR squad is gonna rip through everyones a$$es and take it all this year". See, now thats something we could've talked about at length, you and i. For the record, I dont know Roddy Layton at all. He sounds like a peach. There, thats some of what we would have talked about.....like two grown men.

I have been trying to reach out to you for sometime now, I have laid out so many bread crums for you to follow and have a word with me IN PERSON-ANYTIME you like partner. those DR coaches are the ones i sat with for the 2nd half of the DB-Troy game, they are the two folks i intend most of my posts for here on the blog. They are the two i have know for going on 8 years now. They are good men, but i get tired of hearing from them on how they just know "this is the year, no one can beats us". Its that smug attitude that fuels the fire in our version of the DR/DB squabble. It wears on you.

It's too bad only Huskie Fans see it that way... Everyone else and I'm sure the intelligent ones would understand... Oh well, good luck!

I did go out on a limb and told KH on another thread when he came up with his what if we lost and CO won that we would definitely win the game and the Men in Blue came thru .don't ask me why I just had a feeling we would win . Unfortunately I had to attend a rosary and saw V and N there . But my comps gave me the updates and people there were looking at me like as was a crazy man. Back to the Damien thing glad to hear it was bs and not fact , you know the blog. But really are the people of Damien united with Gano or are there people already wanting to bail on him. We were very fortunate to get Hags as he knows the value of being a Lancer and what it means and has carried it on to the players. It was a very unique situation. Let me ask you this , do you think any other coach could have come in and do what he has done at AMAT.

88-0 sounds like an embarrassment right, what does 62-0 sound like to you. High School is not about embarassing your opponent this bad, fine beat them 42-0 and stop them from scoring the rest of the game. 88-0 was the score from the Webb-La Verne Lutheran game that basically cost LVL their season. They had fourteen players left after that game.

I don't know what went down at CDF but that is more embarrassing for South Hills than anything, that somehow they felt they had the need to run up the score. That's what I see at by that score.

I saw something interesting on a post where someone was giving you the business. They said something to the effect of Gano being the right man for the job but is Damien the right job for Gano. First time a FC hater made any kind of sense on that point, all the rest was normal bs hater crap. But that Gano point stuck . I have been reading somethings on here to the effect of Gano chewing out his captains and parents not liking it.There was a love affair for a while but it seems to be over and no w's will do that.It's a shame but unless everyone buys into it, it will not happen. Aside from that kid who ran the mile. Remember that wide receiver you coached and he also suprised you when you saw him on the field. That's what AMAT is all about .

A few years ago Damien beat Chino Hills in a controversial ending that should have propelled the program to bigger and better things but it didn't...in fact that game turned out to be a curse that has culminted in a record of 10-19 since that fateful night...I bet most Spartan followers find that hard to believe...but its true. This year Damien is 1-4 and facing a tremendous challenge not to go 1-6 with Chino Hills and Glendora on the horizon.

I know I come on here and say they have a chance to go undefeated in league or have a chance to beat the Lancers but the truth is I don't play anymore...they do. and as much as my words don't affect wins they don't affect loses either...and that's the rub..you can't have it both ways.

The only thing that matters is what the players think. Do the think they can win..well maybe they might but thinking won't get it done...BELIEVING GET'S IT DONE....and while Amat "believes" others "think"...huge difference.

When a team wins big games like O Lu or in Damien's case Chino Hills...they have a choice to make....live off of this for years or venture into the unknown. For those like my fiends (no I didn't forget the "R") who never played this will sound like complete BS...but to those that have crossed the Rubcon...you know what I speak of.

Gano has encountered his Rubicon at Damien from what I see and hear...anyway..you get the point. My coach used to say, heck I think every coach used to say, .."YOU PLAY LIKE YOU PRACTICE!!!" Coach Rollinson used to tell the RBs..."Run all the way to thru the End Zone!!! DON'T EVER LET UP UNTIL YOU PASS THE GOAL LINE!!" Every time..all the time.

What is remarkable about Bishop Amat's success is they are 11-4 since Hags took over yet Fred and others doubt you're real.

On Friday as I was talking to a few JV coaches from DR I asked if they knew the Amat score...one said yeah.."Its a blow out!!! Bishop Amat will get their A** Kicked tonight!" They must have thought I asked for their opinion instead of the score..lol...JK

I said, "I don't know about that" They laughed.

Then I told them..."I coached a kid once who used to run the mile for our elementary school. He was a terrible athlete...as unathletic as any kid they could think of...boogers always running down his nose...came in dead last in the mile...they had to almost ask him off the track so they could start the ext race but the kid wouldnt stop running. After I saw him runnig down the field on KOs for Bishop Amat I couldn't believe my eyes!!! He was a stud, a football player...I'm telling you..i don't know what they do at Amat but they make football players out of kids"

They all shook their heads and said..."Tonight they get their a88 kicked!!!'

Crazy huh? As hard as it is to admit it for some, especially that idiot Guru, the best football is played at Bishop Amat and has been for years. On the same night that CO beat Damien by 3 Bishop Amat beat SB by 1! Ironc isn't it?

I hope Gano is able to convince his players that the time to cross the Rubicon is now...Mendrun's Miracle was a spark that should have never been ignored...it was. The game againt the Lancers should have been that game for the Spartans this year..yet there were subtle hints of doubt at practice, at least in my mind and I thought and said...maybe CO becomes SJB...so I didn't go..

That was classic!! Sorry if I offended some... just dropping a few names from the list. Interesting that there are some NFL players NOT on that list AND I forgot to include Kory Minor. There - he gets First and Last and mentioned solo with out getting lost in the middle of 20 other names.

You know a few things stuck out. But the ONE thing I'll remember was - Tear and smiles.

You've felt them both and after a game like this they come from the same place. Tears of joy on the faces of some players. Anyone that says real men don't cry probably never achieved anything great. Or lost something really important. Then there were smiles to make your face crack from some of the coaches.

At the risk of overstating the obvious, I think this was a turning point in the program. When a new coach comes in there's some excitement and a natural boost. When you do well early (OLu) you build some momentum. Then there's that natural let down that you can take a breath. But you can't. You've got to tighten it up even more, especially when you have a little less depth in the upper classes because of the recent past.

So I'm not sure this group of players, that is relatively young and inexperienced, deep down in places they don't want to talk about, believed they could be great. A few of the leaders and the coaching staff are trying to instill that... but I think that's why you saw the tears. They realized that they really could do what everyone has been telling them they can do.

That realization on their faces - and the joy from the coaches that they might just be getting through was priceless.

Finally, anytime there is a little "chaos" like there was when the field was swarmed - a couple knuckleheads think it gives them free reign to release their inner fool. But I choose to stick with the good stuff. Those folks (young and old alike) know who I'm talking about. I'll attribute it to great enthusiasm.

I may have been 1 TD off on the half time score. The point is that it was a defensive touchdown. Barrera was in on defense probably because he needs the work. He missed last game with an injury. Coaches were probably just trying to get him some extra work in.

OK...but I don't think it was the last minute. Also, when you are up by a good margin you try to run the ball to kill the clock. It was a rushing play and Vaugh broke one. You can't ask a kid not to do his best.

I agree...but I don't know too many coaches who take out the starters after the 2nd quarter. Teams can come back. The only play I can say was ill-advised was the 40+ yard pass to the end zone when South Hills was up by 40+ points. Other than that, the other scores were a rushing touchdown and a defensive score. Nothing you can do about those.

Kudos to the coaches and principal. I'm sure the principal consulted with the coaches before she spoke with the refs...if she did.

The QB was the 3rd or 4th QB to play in the game. He was our JV QB and is a good player. As far as best running back? The kid who played in the 4th qtr has had less than 5 rushes this season and hasn't played in most games.

As far as I saw, there was No Lesson being taught. It was just kids playing football to the best of their ability on both sides.

Darian Johnson is a very good and Special player no doubt. Is he consistantly making those plays and single handedly beating a team like St. Bonnies game in and game out? No, but, he came to play that nite he got into what in sports we call a "zone" and had a great nite. Continue the good work DJ your catch in OT at the 3 yard line was the clincher to a great nite, One of the most exciting games at Amat to be at live. What a crowd! St. Bonnies is a very good team and Credit Amats Defense they shut it down when they had to. Diamond Ranch Sat.... No let down, Amat will come to play because a big win true can set you up for a let down against your next opponent but it can also work in your favor where after beating a top ranked school can rocket your confidence to another level where you can just come out and take it to your next opponent. I see Amat winning this game with no problems. Diamond Ranch will treat this game like it is their St. Bonnies coming to town. Maybe last year they hung close with Amat and almost stold that game but they had some very good talent. This year the talent level is down in DR and Amat, well lets just say they are Amat, I do not see a let down I see a blow out.

Agree about earlier opportunities and some of that reason was addressed in the feature article last week. He certainly is showing the commitment, responsibility, leadership, and impact so far this season.

That "Top Twelve" list is a tough one to crack. "Top Twenty" is still good. Here are some names (more than 12 and forgive me if I miss some - others pitch in):
Young, Haden, McKay, Sciarra, Kelly, McDonald, Taylor, A.Fields, Tanner, Jackson, Bieniemy, Royster, Fraley, Pace, S.Fields, Sermons, Brown, McCutcheon, Mi. Wagner, McLuskey.

As I write this, I realize a name that is rarely mentioned and underrated Lancer is Brian Kelly. Played in the early '70s then at Washington State and is in the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame, all over ethir record books as a receiver and was one of Warren Moons favorite targets as they won all those Grey Cups in Edmonton. Tidbits of trivia.

DJ has had some very good games and a couple of great games...the others mentioned had great careers. Could DJ have done more? Well there is your answer...the other's never allowed "if" into the picture. They were undeniably gifted from jump!.

In defense of Darien's accomplishments is that all of the studs you have named were showcased on both sides of the balls i.e. McCutcheon played WR and CB for 3 years so he had more time to develop as a great player and thus had more opportunities on the field to make more big plays. Whereas, Johnson's play time during his sophomore and junior year was limited to defense and kickoff returns. I think if the coaches would have allowed him more playing time on both sides of the ball, he would have certainly made a larger historical impact. However, Bienemy was a complete beast of RB who only needed to play offense, he never played defense.

I have watched all of these studs play at Amat and Johnson should be considered one of the dozen or so elite players out of Amat.

now that is some great insight. thank you guys for not only answering my question, but more importantly, understanding the question. i would have to agree that it takes multiple years of dominance to attain THAT level of acclaim. i do wonder, however, if this kid could have done the same last year given the opportunity. it seems to me that offensively he's extremely explosive. i've been to each game this and last year. this year he's dominating, last year i don't think he did, though i think he led the team in interceptions. i'm just really impressed as a spectator. i think he has an opportunity to do some great things this year. do you think teams will begin to "make sure" he doesn't beat them? i wonder.

Thanks coach for explaining to the Valley what really what actually occurred in the game Friday night. We really need to use other people's hatred as motivation.

Nominations for athlete of the week for girls...
Megan Callen and/or Deanna Dalton from St. Lucy's volleyball.

They were featured Tuesday on Time Warner Cable's High School Sport of the week after beating Upland and then both girls were instrumental on the big win over #3 South Hills. Megan Callen had 9 kills, 6 blocks and shut down the repeat volleyball player of the year Gomez. Deanna Dalton had 18 kills respectively against this very good South Hills team.

This is my vote.

Athlete of the week nomination:

Deanna Dalton or Megan Callen should be nominated for player of the week. Tuesday they beat Upland and were profiled on Time Warner Cable High School Sport of the week and interviewed. Then they followed it up with a big win over 3rd ranked South Hills. Deanna Dalton had 18 kills and the repeat Volleyball player of the year Melinda Gomez was shut down by Megan Callen middle blocker with six blocks and multiple deflections. So much so she was substituted out of the game from time to time. In addition, she had nine kills respectively to seal the deal.

South Hills was up 49 to 0 at the half. That's respectable. Then in the first drive of the 2nd half, Northview fumbled on their own 8 yard line and the South Hills defense ran it in for a TD.

After that, there was 1 long South Hills pass to score a touchdown early in the 3rd qtr. That made it 62-0. This was our 3rd string QB who has not played in the first 3 games.

From the 3rd Qtr on, our JV team played.

Personally, I could have done without the last touchdown, but other than that I was OK with the score.

There was no intentional "lesson" even though the score may appear that way.

I was fortunate to see some great Amat players and yes Daylon and Ili were out of this world. DJ has a long way to go to reach them but he also continues to get better every week so maybe he will continue to grow and improve in college as well and ultimately reach the highest level some day. Daylon and other Amat greats played on superior teams with incredible surrounding talent, though not taking away from their awe inspiring performances. Great point Coach

Anonymous is not a serious DR person. You are simply a Amat person who is making sure Amat stays focused on one game at a time. That they don't overlook DR and look towards next week. It is Amat. I don't think you need to do all that to get Amat pumped. Again it is Amat. They know who they are. So stop trying. What scares me most is the "Ebonics" language you are trying to use. My input on Darien Johnson's status as he stacks up against the best from Amat.
He is definitely an impact player and a big play maker. He has done that since his sophomore year. He is a senior this year, and he is making even bigger plays because he is a leader, a team player, and because he is coachable. He also has great coaches that are guiding him very well. However, yes he has had great performances this season, and this one you can consider it super great, especially considering the competition. But, if you want to be considered one of the greatest, then you can't count just one game or just one season. Many of the Amat greats had 2 or even three greats seasons! Many of them dominated every game their senior seasons on both sides of the ball. Such as Jason Patterson and Wilhans Ili. Ili was so dominant his senior year that he was honored as the best player in all of southern California...at nose tackle! Have you ever heard of that before? And what about the guy that coaches Darien? In 92', Daylon had a kick off return for a touchdown in the first three playoff games, and a 70+ return against Loyola in the Championship game. That was besides his interceptions and receptions and tackles and punt returns and everything else he did! Oh yeah, that season he was a sophomore.
Darien was great friday! Keep playing like a Lancer Darien and great things will continue to happen!!!

South Hills coaching staff, administration, and community should be ashamed of themselves. What was the lesson?

I tend to agree. No one from Diamond Ranch would provoke such provocative remarks against any opponent, much less Bishop Amat and Glendora. This year Dranchhh has gone out of his way to suggest this year's team is even better than last year which I found peculiar in light of so many seniors moving on. Bishop Amat is to be commended on their recent victory and we anticipate a hard fought battle played with sportsmenship of the highest order. Dranchhh and anonymous do not reflect our community. I wish they would seriously consider toning down their rhetoric for the good of all involved. Let's make it a game we can both be proud of.

Just to clarify I'm talking about *Mike* Wagner who went on to start at Iowa St (and maybe best known for an amazing block on a play that was a finalist for College FB play of the year) ... not William Wagner, 2005 SGV Player of the Year nor Marcus Wagner from 2007. But you can't place a young player among history unless you've seen those you're comparing him to. That's why 72 asked.

Keep in mind I am in no way diminishing Darien Johnson's performance which *may* just be the single best performance on offense, defense, and special teams in Amat history, given the circumstances. I gotta think about that one.

And since we're talking ... an **overtime TD reception!** (Yes that was a TD. On film he does not step out of bounds and hits the pylon=TD! The old official on the St Bonnies sideline wasn't even looking down at the feet and was so worried about the Bonnies sidelines he missed it entirely. So DJ should have had an offensive TD too.

Now if he puts together another half dozen games like that in the next year and a half- we can start to put him into a different category.

by the way, if i'm not mistaken, johnson is listed as a senior in the program. and, finally, to ask the question is absoutely legitimate if you understand the question which is how the young man stacks up against the amat greats, not sgv greats from 2009. therefore, of course it's legitimate because i don't know amat's history. if that's not clear enough for you to rethink your reply, i would begin to wonder about the level at which you comprehend.

I'm on your side and I l o v e DJ... but just to be fair and put things in their honest perspective, I read the story, saw the game... and he had a GREAT one... but I also saw ALL of the previously mentioned... up close and personal... and then some. And no ... he's NOT to mentioned in the same breath.

Darian gave one of the most amazing performances against the number 2 team in the state, 17 in the nation. let us not argue about number 1 or 4... whatever. St. Bonnies is 69 and 6 or something over the past 6 years. they are pretty damn good. So, first off, this was a huge game as far as national prominance, etc.

the only performance i can think of in recent memory that rivaled this was the runningback from St. Paul when they won the title. amazing. but... not against one of the best in the country! Darian dominated against the best.

Lastly, Wagner was a good runningback, but AMAT never beat a team ranked this high during his years. I dont remember them even playing a team that good. So if you want to mention Wagner up there with Biennemy (spelling?) go right ahead, as we are speaking of high school careers only. i have no problem with that. But you then HAVE to count Darian. The fact that he is not a senior should not discount this - it should make it even more amazing.

By the way, i do not apologize for what i have said. i was a bit harsh, true. but if anyone watched that game i dont see how you even begin to "think about" Darian's standing. Again, the fact that he is not a senior should embellish my argument.

general turgidson, i will always defer to those who know more than i regarding the high school teams represented on this blog. from my vantage point, darien johnson is clearly the best player, not only at amat, but in the sgv period. that notwithstanding, i wanted to know how he compares to the great ones who have dawned the amat uniform in the past, considering the rich tradition amat has. i'm not quite sure how my entry could be considered confrontational, but it certainly was not intentional. additionally, i'm certain i've never written a negative comment about anyone on this blog. can't wait until saturday. should be a great game.

To stick up for 72, I think we are being a little sensitive (and maybe rightly so given some of the bashing - even in victory) The way I read it 72 was giving the Lancers props and just asking how Darien Johnson stacks up against the legendary Lancers of all-time.

He is one of our impact players who is following the path of many former greats. The typical path is to contribute mostly on defense as a sophomore, action as a receiver as a Jr and with (Anderson already in the backfield) maybe some carries as a senior. I clearly could see some packages with them both highly involved in the running game as others emerge. That being said, DJ is only a junior and has a long way to go before being mentioned with Taylor, A.Fields, Tanner, Bieniemy, Pace, Royster, S.Fields, Sermons, Brown , McCutcheon, Wagner, McLuskey, et al. Fortunately, he's a jr and is on the right path to do just that if he continues to commit. I'm excited to see him get there.... and he certainly can.

And make sure we are not prisoners of the moment and get too carried away with the "Best team" & "going all the way" stuff. They still have a ways to go to even match last year, and may be end up being our best in the last 4 years - but beyond that I'd say hold your horses... although I like the enthusiasm.

the kid ran back a kick and a pick to the house against one of the best teams in the state and the country. he plays everything and is the best all around player (not athlete) that AMAT has had in years on the best team AMAT has had in many years.

AMAT is going all the way. they have 100% special teams, 100% defense (Di Fiori has the best D i've seen in years), and judging from friday, a 65% offense. dont know if they can win it, but they WILL get damn close. if that coaching staff is the real deal, which it is, they will improve the offense and be ready come late november. by the way, the only real problem was the play calling. the O line kicked ass, no glaring mistakes from McClanahan, Anderson can make the plays needed. and Darian... need i say more?

RUNNING THE OPTION WITH A MINUTE TO GO ON THAT LAST DRIVE IN REGULATION WAS HORRIBLY STUPID! that was the first time they ran it all night. the option is not a trick play that you just pull out of your arse. also, they were only a few yards out of field goal range. shoot, give it to anderson and let him fall forward a few times. it was working. for the life of me i cant understand why they called that. not surprisingly, they suffered a huge loss right there and the game went into overtime. never should have.

it seems as though bishop amat is finding its way. i would wonder, though, if the offense will be able to be proficient against top defenses. bishop's offense was not terribly productive friday vs st. bonaventure, but lived on big plays, notably from johnson. i'm sure the offense will crank it up as this season continues. #67 is a big boy and stays low. i know daylon mccutcheon was mr. everything at amat and i assume he's considered the best all around weapon the school has had (again, assuming). how does johnson stack up against other amat players who played offense, defense, and special teams? this kid seems to be really good but with amat's tradition, don't know if he is close.

Explain to me how you do not have teams from the San Antonio league ranked ahead of Miramonte teams like C.I.F. does because as far as I can tell at least three teams probably four teams are better in the San Antonio league compared to the Miramonte especially when the Canada brothers are declared eligible this week.
