The Scouting Guru says there are three players he would pay money to watch ... When's the last time he paid for anything?
The Scouting Guru has been all over the San Gabriel Valley and beyond, and like always, he's offered to share his thoughts, free of charge. Don't hate, enjoy it for what it's worth, which is one man's opinion on the talent and teams in the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding areas.
The Guru Says: We are officially at the halfway point in the season. Rather than give your favorite team grades and make a fool out of myself (did I say that it would take a miracle for a Bishop Amat to defeat St. Bonaventure...I meant to say that it would take St. Bonnie's a miracle to win over Amat...yeah, right. And what is going to happen next...the Dodgers are going to sweep the Cardinals and take on Philly in the NLCS...oh wait - that happened too?...This has been some year!), I wanted to go in a different direction.
After watching all the game film for the high profile teams in the area (and no the Montview League is not considered a high-profile league) there are three players that I call "Prime-Time Players." These are the players that I would pay money to watch them play on any night. They are the best playmakers in the area and standout on film. These are guys that have not had a bad game and are the most "electrifying "players on the field. Here they are.
1. Darian Johnson, DB, Bishop Amat - I had a conversation with ESPN Rise recruiting guru Greg Biggins (and believe me, he is a guru - not me) and he could not believe that this kid has not been offered so far after watching his game in-person against St. Bonaventure. Hopefully that will change because in every game that we have seen Amat on film (and we have every game of Amat so far this season), this kid has truly been the best player on the field for the Lancers. I love the fact that he is playing both offense and defense. I wish they would have used Sheldon Price the same way last year - but that is another topic for another day. This is the type of kid that I love to promote. Plays the game really hard, doesn't take a play off and unlike many corners that we see in the SGV and the IE, this kid can tackle. Comes from a great family, our service is going to go the extra to make sure that this kid gets a D-1 offer. If Amat is not willing to do it, we will - that is how much we love the kid.
2. Geoffrey Vaughns, ATH, South Hills - No doubt you will have read the article in the Tribune about Ify Umodu (and trust me when I tell you, he will have a Division I football offer before the season is over) but when you watch the official South Hills game tape, Vaughns is the most entertaining player on the field for the Huskies. He is the area's version of the Dante Hall and can safely be called "The Human Joystick." He is very hard to tackle and has the capability to surpass the numbers that Dorian Wells did in his one year at SH. I love the fact that Bogan is using him all over the place on offense, and he is truly THE BEST CORNER IN THE SGV! I just don't know how West Covina stops this kid on Friday night. I think that if SH makes a big run in the playoffs and gets to their ultimate destination, this kid has to be seriously looked at for top honors as Player of the Year. If he can get his academics straighten out, he will get that D-1 offer that he is looking for.
3. Ricky Johnson, RB, West Covina - I debated long and hard on this. I wanted to use CO's Muema and Powell, along with several other players, but in the end this was the kid that had the less knocks than Muema (who has clearly lost his speed compared to his sophomore and junior film) and Powell (who put in a below-average effort against Rancho Cucamonga). Johnson Is the type of kid that keeps you on the edge of your feet. You never know when that big run is going to come for him, but when it comes - no one stops the kid. With his background in gymnastics, he has terrific balance. However, I just don't see him as a D-1 RB for several reasons. First, he has not shown that he can catch passes consistently. Secondly, I don't know how tough the kid really is. Remember, he was really banged up last year and had some injuries this year. He might not be tough enough to handle D-1 football. But for the area purposes only, he standouts out on film and thus becomes a player that I would be more than happy to pluck my money down and watch him in action.
Those are my three guys. Tell me the three that you would pay for your hard earned money to watch.
10 THINGS THAT I THINK I THINK
1. I think that I want to give a piece of advice to my good friend Joe Torosian of the Mid Valley News. To hear you talk about quarterbacks is like hearing Dick Vitale talk about baseball. It sounds awful and it makes you sound really bad. To pick a quarterback from Mark Keppel above Jacob Shirley at South Hills is like picking David Duval over Tiger Woods for the final spot on the Rider Cup team. Stick to the writing and I stay away from the player evaluations.
2. I think that when it comes to the best coaching jobs in the area this year, a tip of the cap goes out to the coaching staffs over at Bishop Amat and Charter Oak. They have done a great job in getting the most out of their players. Folks - this stuff is not any magic. These guys are breaking down film, getting the game plans in order and coach their players up hard on Friday nights. Keep working hard guys, hopefully the parents are leaving you guys alone.
3. I think that while most of you have taken your shots at me, and you have every right to do so (I did say that it would take a miracle for Amat to win and that Charter Oak would lose to Etiwanda - and the way the first half was going last week I don't think you would get any disagreements from the Charger faithful) I still stand by the fact that the best football is played in the IE. The fact that only one team from the area has stood up and played some of the top teams in the IE, shows that the SGV wants no part of the area. If you think that I am wrong, let's see what happens in the off-season when pre-season schedule have to be adjusted again. You watch; I'd be surprised if more than one team from the area will go to the IE and play a big-time team in the area. And if your team is looking for a team to play, call Redlands East Valley - they are always looking for a great game.
4. I think that the two best leagues to watch for the area this year are the San Antonio League and the Sierra League. Anything can happen and if the wrong team takes a night off, it could be curtains earlier than anyone can think of. I am not picking the winners in those leagues, but it will be interesting to see develops at the end of the season.
5. I think that there are two words to best describe the CIF Southern Section Office - arrogant and unprofessional.
a. Along the same lines, you know when kids "get it" when you read the article about Ify Umodu in the Tribune today and he makes this following comment, ""You know, it feels like everyone's against us, like it's us against the world," Umodu said. "When you win a lot, there are a lot of haters, that's what it feels like right now. But there's a way to shut them all up, and that's to win. We have to come together as a team and just win." Yeah Ify, a lot of those haters are right here on this site. That's right folks, Ify was directly talking to all of you that make high school football seem like the NFL. GET A LIFE!!!!
6. I think that you really owe it to yourself to make it out to Covina District Field for the South Hills vs. West Covina game Friday night. I had a conversation with Oregon Defensive Back coach John Neal recently and he said that he really thinks that the WC v. SH game is one of the best rivalries in Southern California period. Every game is a competitive game that comes down to the wire. Look for the 2009 version to be no different. In these economic times, spending your money at this game Friday night will be well worth it.
a. One other side note, I think one of the more compelling match-ups Friday night will be the match-up between West Covina Offensive Coordinator Brian Murphy and South Hills Defensive Coordinator Danian Rios. In the three games that SH has won this year, they have held the opposing offense to an average of 35 yards rushing. And if there is one thing that West Covina loves to do is run the football. Something has to give here boys. Who will prevail?
7. I think that for anyone that thinks that Citrus football is getting the point of being competitive against Mt. SAC, I have one answer for them....Mt. SAC 55, Citrus 0. So please don't waste my time telling me that Citrus Football is turning the corner, because it has a long way to go to get to that point.
8. I think that anyone who think that South Hills lost to a below average team in La Habra should know that La Habra defeated San Clemente last week 28-27. Let's just say that La Habra has the inside track to winning the Southwest Division.
9. I think that I am going to try this picking winners think one last time, I'm taking Rowland to not only win Friday night, but to crush Walnut. I'd like to see how Walnut would have done with a schedule like Bishop Amat, Charter Oak or South Hills. My hunch is that Walnut would not be 5-0 as they are right now. Talk about a cupcake schedule.
10. I think that I really don't want to go off the football highway, but I have to indulge here. Your faithful scouting guru is now a brand spanking new uncle. My sister Jolene (who by the way is the best sister anyone can ever have) gave birth on Monday afternoon to a 6 lb. bouncing baby boy named Dean (I'm liking this Dean thing. First there was Cameron Deen and now it's this Dean). Mom and Dad are doing great, the grandparents can't wait for him to come to their house for the weekend and the Uncle's (myself and my younger brother Marc) are totally fired up. And in case you are wondering, he watched his first football game last night (Boise St v. Tulsa) and will begin to watch high school football film next week. We have another guru in the family...It's great to be an Uncle...finally!!!!!!

Maybe he was a little drunk or maybe he just doesn't know what he's talkin about. By reading everyones posts on here the second one would probably be the best answer. It's hard to believe someone and actually think they are not biased when everyone dislikes what he/she has to say..............
It is late and I am bored, but I had to go back a few weeks and review the top ten from the Guru. Not to take away in anyway from the other nine (two cannot play), but is this ranking anywhere close to what we have seen to date? Hey, when you make your money on looking at talent this says a lot. Darien has the least amount of text, but tape speaks loader than words in this case.
BTW, I live up the street from Los Osos, but I head West every friday. You can take the IE, I still love my SGV.
1. Siaosi Aiono (6-3e, 285e, 5.4e, OLT, South Hills, 2011) -- This is best lineman in the area, in the IE and will be one of the top lineman in all of Southern California by the time this season is done. A huge performance at the USC Lineman Camp on Sunday had him talking with OL coach Pat Ruel and HC Pete Carroll afterward about keeping SC in the recruiting picture. Let's play the numbers game right now. He has two offers from BYU and San Jose State and at this time next year, he will have 22 offers minumum. Not much separates from our next guy.
2. Dennis Rufus (6-1, 181, 4.6e, DB, Charter Oak, 2011) -- Toyed with the idea making him tied with Aiono, but since he doesn't have any offers right now, couldn't do it. Don't be mistaken, he will have offers at this time next year. Would have loved to have seen him at the Skills Camp at SC last Saturday. But, for one of the top corners in So Cal right now, he has a lot going for him. Very recruitable.
3. Adam Muema (5-9.5, 180, 4.62HT, RB Charter Oak, 2010) -- Clearly the top RB in the East SGV. Now he is better than St. Francis RB Deitrich Riley....not on my watch. And apparently the Pac-10 feels the same way.
4. Jordan Canada (5-9e, 180e, 4.7e, RB/CB, South Hills, 2010) -- Made the recruiting headline of the week with his first offer from New Mexico State. Interesting that NMSU offered Canada and not Muema?....Hmmm......
5. Wallace Gonzales (6-5, 221, 4.7e, WR, Glendora, 2011) -- Ok, so this kid would be third on my list if I knew that he wants to play football in college. Right now, baseball scouts are screaming his name out and have him projected as an early round draft prospect next year. Hey, baseball is a lot less physical than football. Love his game on the football field though.
6. Ify Umodu (6-2, 198, 4.98, WR, South Hills , 2010) -- Many colleges have him projected as a mid major conference type of player. Can't disagree with that assessment. Great family pedigree!
7. A.J. Powell (5-7, 175, 4.79HT, Charter Oak, 2010) -- Football is a big man's game and even though they kid grades out really well on the football field, the size is going to be a major issue with BCS colleges. He does have offers though.
8. Peter Nonu (6-03, 285e, 5.4e, South Hills, 2011) -- A one gap defensive tackle that is a terror on the D-line. A proto typical 1-tech defensive tackle that also excels on the wrestling mat. Solid propsect here.
9. Keith Smith (6-1, 216, 4.90e, Charter Oak, 2010) -- A ball-hawk to the ball, he have some questions on his speed, but not his ability. Has several offers...hey Charter Oak just might be busy on signing day this year. Good to have them back in the mix.
10. Darian Johnson (5-8.5, 175, 4.80e, Bishop Amat, 2010) -- Thought he showed up really well at the SC camp last Saturday. Will be heading up to Oregon this weekend. Great ball skills.

To put it mildly you are simply a fool a total jerk. First you say that the guru should do what he does best evaluate talent and stay away from trash talkin. Well what he does best is trash talk and he should stay away from evaluating talent because he doesn't have a clue. How can you say that when he is so biased when it comes to a player from SH. He will never be a good judge of talent until he totally disconnects from SH so until that happens just let him keep doing what he knows best . Talking trash.
I have a couple of questions for the "Guru"
If you spend soooo much time "coaching" at South Hills, how can you possible form an opinion of any kid outside the Husky program? Do you get your information from the same place that you got that Roddy Layton was leaving D'Ranch for Santiago? (Even though he never even applied or interviewed for the job!)
On another note, I watched the segment that that Torosian guy did on Southeast QB's. It sounded more like he had fun with it than was he trying to be serious. Looking through the archives I noticed you've never been on the show. Was the shot at Torosian come from you not getting an invite?
He needs to edit the last sentence about Amat not willing to help. That part is a lie by sgv scouting. It is not true and he know's it, but still publishes it. His lies about the coaching staff not helping Johnson should be taken down Fred. You obviously have know idea what the coaches do at Amat, or how many D1 coaches they talk to, or how many D1 schools they send Game films and season hilights to or you wouldn't post such slander. I agree that if u can keep running the ball then you should do so, but 3/9 from your star QB is nothing special or is it? Especially with the WRs SH has, this QB you claim to be great athlete isn't living up to the hype... Why would you turn the #1 WR in the valley into a RB with such an excellent QB?
Really, I suppose it's not hard for someone to read into Hags comments in the paper and interpret it as "being in the doghouse". If you remember, the article on DJ said,
""He's always wanted to be that guy, but sometimes I don't think he quite understood what it took to be that guy," Hagerty said. "He now has a cleaner picture of what that guy has to be for us."
"They (Price, Bowens, etc) were leaders," Johnson said. "With them gone, I knew I had to step up; whether that means firing up guys or making plays on the field, I had to take on that responsibility."
It's one thing to say it, though; Hagerty needed to see it.
"He's grown up," Hagerty said. "Darien is like a magnet around campus; people like him. They like to be around him. He's fun to talk to and he's always smiling, but sometimes in the past that would get in the way of the things he needed to do in order to be a focused football player.
"He still jokes, but he knows when it's time to work and get down to business, which is the biggest difference between him last year and this year.
To some that may be "the doghouse" ... to those that really know Steve and the maturation of Darien, understand that it is a coach teaching a kid life-lessons and helping him grow up to be a man and a great football player.
The other reality is playing EVERY down in the Pac5 takes a tremendous toll on the body. DJ is not a big guy and using him in spots on offense as a situational player is much better than him taking an unnecessary beating - and maybe becoming less effective in the plays that he is in.
With Hagerty - kids need to earn what they get.... and once they prove that - they get that opportunity. The commitment to be great and what it takes on a daily basis is not something that comes easy to 17 yr old kids. If you fall short of that there are consequences. Need anyone be reminded of suspending Jerry Mac for a half for what many were saying was a minor indiscretion, while we were playing for the League Championship on the final game of the season. How many coaches would do that?
That's a program that will stand up for principles. That's how it gets built over time. That's how you become great. And that's why there are so many kids that don't get the most out of their potential and how many teams are just average.
You are implying that the Amat staff is not promoting their players. There was a sentence removed for that very reason. Ypu stated that the Amat coaches were not promoting DJ because he was in the doghouse. I just saw Darien Johnson on "The Challenge" on channel 4 for the second time. Just admit you have something against the staff.
I've seen both play this year and there is no comparison between Johnson and Vaughns. Johnson by far!
A couple of interesting comments that need to be commented on by yours truly.

Totally untrue. And along the same lines, there are a couple of people that have said that I have not commented on BA defeating St. Bonnie. If you noticed on the second item on my "10 Things I Think I Think," you'll see that I complemented both the CO and BA staffs for a job well done. I thought that many of you would be able to read through the lines as my way of complementing Coach Hagerty and his staff at BA for a great job. But since many of you appear to have first grade reading, let me be clear on this... My congratulations to the entire staff at BA for a job well done against St. Bonnie. Now along the DJ lines, I got the feeling that DJ was in dog house of some of the coaches on the staff. Hopefully things well change. All I can tell you is - as a scout - you would like to promote kids that are doing a great job and project to the D-1 level. I think he deserves it. I had one coach who's played against BA tell me that DJ is "soft." I told him flat out that I disagreed. So, count me in on the Darian Johnson fan club.

You are totally correct that anybody could have been the QB on Friday against West Covina. But, it appeared as if WC wanted to takeaway the big play in the first half and were not loading up the box. In the second half, the SH OL ran up against an 8 man box and totally took it to WC. Who needs to pass the ball when your run game can amass 300 yards for a game. That's what I call pounding the rock.
I don't think that Vaughns is the best running back in the valley, I think he is a close second in being the best athlete on the field right now in the area with Johnson being. But if Vaughns continues to run and catch the ball like he is doing, well... that could all change.

It seems to me that you have been taking quite a beating recently. To tell you the truth, under most circumstances, I would actually feel sorry for you if it weren’t for the fact that you brought a lot of this stuff upon you're own shoulders.
If you recall, I told you not that long ago that if you just did the thing that you do best (evaluating talent) and tried to stay away from all the trash talking, maybe you would have had a few more fans in here on you're side than what you presently have right about now.
Anyway, 90 percent of the crap that comes in here is stuff that is directed against you and it has absolutely nothing to do with football, but rather (unfortunately) most of it has to do with trying to knock you down a peg or two.

Hmm....Let's see Vaughns is avg 8.6 yards a carry for the season, 17.53 yards a catch for the year and lit up West Covina for 169 yards on the ground Friday night. Hmm...I think that Mike Maggiore would disagree with you. Right now, I'll take the three guys on my boards. The films and stats back it up.
Oh and if I remember right, Woods changed swing coaches and hasn't lost a beat. It's safe to say that Shirley had his version of changing swing coaches and it looks like he hasn't lost a beat either. I wonder if Mike Maggiore would take him right now?... Chances are he would.

SGV FOOTBALL...don;t know if you were at the game but Rufus had a serious meltdown last night just before the half and appeared to quit the team. Surprisingly, he came out (a few minutes after the rest of the team) in the second half and just sat, although none of the starters played the 4th quarter. This talented kid better get his head in order or else his career will be over before it even starts.
Fred, It is irresponsible for James to say that Amat is not doing their part in the recruiting process for D. Johnson or any other Amat player. DJ will get offers, and trust me, it "Will Not" be because of his company.

Too many kids get caught up with their size first and listen to the WRONG strength coach who couldn't run. Adam has lost some steps, and the weight gained in the off-season may hurt him!
The league is weak, so maybe some stats might help! He's also having nagging injury problems. Usually a diect result from muscles getting to big to fast!

Spend a little less time trying to perpetrate an ACTUAL recruiter and cultivate REAL relationships with coaches before you present yourself on their sidelines. For your third pick I would have chose either Adam Muema or Dennis Rufus. Now that the non league schedule is over no one is going to be able to stop Dennis Rufus on the pass plays. expect bigger numbers in league from Muema also.
