Amat Watch: After facing QBs Neuheisel, Kasdorf, Bennett and Wittek, Lakewood has the best of them all, USC-Bound Jesse Scroggins

| | Comments (59) |

"In my opinion, he's the best quarterback in the country. He's got a great arm, makes great decisions and he really understands what we want to do." -- Lakewood coach Thadd MacNeal on QB Jesse Scroggins

By Fred J. Robledo, Staff Writer
For the past month the Bishop Amat football team has dealt with some of the best quarterbacks in the Southland, including Loyola's Jerry Neuheisel, Crespi's Bryan Bennett, Notre Dame's Ryan Kasdorf and Mater Dei's Matt Wittek. But none of them compare to the test the Lancers (10-1) will get on Friday in their Pac-5 Division quarterfinal against No. 4 Lakewood (10-1) at 7 p.m. As far as Lakewood coach Thadd MacNeal is concerned, third-year starting quarterback, Jesse Scroggins, who chose USC over other high- profile schools such as Florida and Tennessee, is among the best anywhere. (To continue, click thread)

AMAT TICKET UPDATE: Bishop Amat has sold out of their allotted tickets for Friday's game at Lakewood. Anyone wanting a ticket should show up early to Lakewood and buy from the box office before they sell out and close the gates. Otherwise, follow it with us on COVERITLIVE with my cousin Mike (an Amat alum).

Don't want to alarm you Amat fan, but this is some impressive stuff

The Long Beach Press Telegram has a thread on the Bishop Amat-Lakewood game. They point out that Bishop Amat is 8-1 all-time against the other Lancers, which includes Bishop Amat's infamous 1970 championship, when they were led by future USC and Rams quarterback Pat Haden.

Bishop Amat leads playoff series, 8-1
1970: Amat 18-17 in 4A championship.
1982: Lakewood 31-amat 12 in first round
1983: Amat 14-7 in OT in the second round.
1985: Amat 27-10 in first round
1987: Amat 35-7 in first round
1990: Amat 31-13 in first round
1993: Amat 37-6 in first round
1997: Amat 13-3 in first round
2003: Amat 35-18 in first round

Scroggins has completed 63 percent of his passes in throwing for 2,043 yards and 29 touchdowns and just four interceptions.

MacNeal, who's coached several other quarterbacks who have gone on to play Division I football, met Scroggins in a football camp in seventh grade and has groomed him ever since.

"Each year I have had him he gets better and better," MacNeal said. "In my opinion, he's the best quarterback in the country. He's got a great arm, makes great decisions and he really understands what we want to do."

In Friday's 41-17 victory over Newport Harbor, Scroggins was his usual efficient self in going 16 of 20 for 238 yards and a touchdown.

The 6-foot-2, 189-pounder has a strong right arm and is 27-7 as a starter. He's also been sacked just eight times in 11 games, which could pose big problems for the Lancers, whose pass defense has been shaky when they don't put enough pressure on the quarterback.

"We always tell our guys, protecting the quarterback and taking care of the football are our two main goals," MacNeal said. "If we do that, we have a quarterback and receivers that can do some damage."

MacNeal has been doing his homework on Bishop Amat and singled out Lancers quarterback Jerry McClanahan and its gutty defense.

"They kind of flew under the radar, but not anymore," he said. "They have beaten some fantastic programs. You have to give their players and coach (Steve) Hagerty a lot of credit. Their quarterback scrambles around and makes plays; I really like him.

"Defensively, they're very disciplined, their kids always play hard."

Lancers win coin flip

If the Lancers beat Lakewood and advance to the semifinals, they'll be at home a week from Saturday against either Dana Hills or top- ranked and undefeated Edison.

They would have had an automatic home game against Edison and won a pregame coin flip to get the home game over Dana Hills.

I sure hope our boy's are not thinking the way you are because any one that knows or has played sports knows that on any given night any team can get beat I don't care how good you are. Also if you look at it realizitically whether any one want's to admit it, we've been lucky on a couple. We just need to go in as we've done and just play our butts off.
Someone said that they over heard some of kids on the team saying that even though they realize that some of theses teams they feel are better but the reason we've been successful is because were more diciplined. These kis make a lot of sense. Let's not count our chickens before they hatch. ON BLUE!!!

The Notre Dame game on IBN Sports was delayed big time. It did not start appearing until late Saturday night and it was only the last half hour of the game. The full game is now available. Does anyone know if the St. Bonnies game was live?

Randy that sounds like a plan. Best wishes to you and your family...hope your "Rudy" is doing better...remember never give up.

Last night was the first time in months that all four of my kids were home. Incredible that a poor kid from Boyle Heights would have two "GREEK" kids dorming in college....and "home for the holidays" God has blessed me and never gave up on me and I in Him.

Yesterday I ran into a former Salesian Mustang as I went to visit my parents. At one time in my life he was a running buddy. He just got off parole two weeks ago and gave his life to Christ after a life of "adventure". As we talked about the 25 years since we'd seen each other he said to me..."I heard you did well for yourself." I told him, "I try"

Then we talked about his life...and as he showed me his "inner city" battle scars I thought to myself...that could have been me. The two AK47 "reminders" in his side, the bat to his skull, his knife wounds on his arms and his neighborhood on his back...all memories of his lost years.

At one point we talked about our close calls in the life of mischief and no good...then he asked me about "my" life in the context of Our Lord and if I had found peace...I said...'God never gave up on me...and I guess I never gave up on Him...that saved me....that and my wife!" As everyone is prone to say in astonishment..."YOU GUYS STILL TOGETHER!!!" ..."yes!!!...next year is 30 years of marriage...incerdible ..huh?"..we both laughed.

The last thing he told me as we left Bob"s Carwash on Whittier Blvd...my old stomping grouds.."Did you come see your parents?...Good ..this place ain't for you any more...Go Home. Frank..stay safe. Life's funny.....funny how things worked out. Go with the Lord."

Yes I have lots to be thankful for..Never take a day or friendship for granted...life is funny...and so are people....Randy...sure Id like to see the game together....ain't life crazy?

Fred...as always...you're the glue that keeps this thing together..too bad some of us loose our minds in here...well if there is hope for me and randy....there is hope for everyone...God Bless the Blog!!!!

"Amat Watch: After facing QBs Neuheisel, Kasdorf, Bennett and Wittek, Lakewood has the best of them all, USC-Bound Jesse Scroggins" -- in this wording, you are saying that "Lakewood" faced "QBs Neuheisel, Kasdorf, Bennett and Wittek."

Word it like this:

Amat watch: After QBs Neuheisel, Kasdorf, Bennett and Wittek, Lancers face best of them all: USC-bound Lakewood star Jesse Scroggins."

You're welcome.

Mr. Alberico my son played football at LVSD and always said your son was one of the strongest players he ever went against...the other being Damien's Jake Salter...pretty good company. My niece ( same class) and daughter ( one grade behind) also went to HNM and said your son was one of the nicest boys at the school. Every time I've spoken to your son it's been a pleasure...he is very modest and extremely polite. You and your wife must be very proud of all his accomplishments both on and off the field.

Funny thing about the Damien players I've mentioned...everyone one of them made All League this year except Hernandez who should have been on the field some where rather than being a back up all year long.

Your son made the right choice obviously and speaks directly to the power of putting on the Blue and Gold....best of luck this Friday.

The Amat stadium 'announcer' is a CLOWN.

The guy's picture in the program is a 'glamour' shot from about 20 years ago.

Why on earth he does a play by play is beyond me.

There HAS to be another [real] announcer who can replace this egomaniac.

IBN Sports broadcasts live as they are contracted by the school from what I know. They had a lot of equipment and I mean probably as much as Fox had when they covered the Bishop Amat-Mater Dei game. You hit it right on the head just now ! The kids good, but at this point of the season, tell me who we haven’t faced that wasn’t really really good already ? After all, the Amat Lancers have already played teams in the top 50 nationally so who are these guys again??

It’s funny, because everybody always says to never overlook your next opponent. Sorry, but I already have. I mean, is Lakewood as good a team compared to whom we’ve already lined up against this year ? Can anyone in here seriously tell me that they are better then even half of the teams we have already played ? And can you really respect the Moore league when we talk about the Serra league and the Trinity league ? Can you ?

Naaaaaaaaaa

BTW, has anyone noticed the catch phrase “Our lady queen of victory?” It’s been getting a lot of play on this blog as of late. Isn’t that AWESOME ???

In fact in our last home game, the cheerleaders made it a point to actually do the pre-game prayer before the kickoff so that they wouldn’t have to compete with the guy who always does the play by play at Kiefer. You know who he is right ??

First down LLLLLLaaaancers !!!

He is just one part of this finely tuned defense. It has and will be the TEAM to the end. Thank you.

Jason Thomas was one of the great athletes in the cifss. However due to an fracture/dislocation ankle he was never the same athlete he was before the injury. He was the Dons best basketball player and would have had a good college career without the ankle fracture that did not heal properly. The Dominguez hoops team with Tyson Chandler,Jason Thomas and Tayshaun Prince was one of the best I have seen in so-cal.
As for Lakewood they were the #1 rated team in so-cal by many before ace rb Jerry Stone was involved in a crime and arrested before the season started.

Spartan Dad sorry forgot about the memo that things have to pass thru you. Now pretend you aren't the Damien Gatekeeper and allow others to speak freely.... without your BS on line toughness and exasperation. The thought that you think anything remotely relevant to Damein is crap and you could some how believe I would listen to you is laughable. Now go pop a beer from your cooler and sober up. The past affects present unless you purge yourself from the past as Gano did recently to one lower level staff except...and there is always an except...one coach! lmao

Just so you're up to speed...you're right this discussion is about Scroggins and Amat and the details...all of them...that might affect this game. One of which is fundamnetals which in this situation favors Amat....and taht was the extended anology to Damien and Alberico...follow along.

Here's something substantial for you to chew on .. seeing how you're the Damein Gatekeeper...always anonymousyl though...Damein scored as many points ...ready for this as ...drum roll please.....

BA 29 DAMIEN 20
BA 24 ST. BONNIES 23
BA 27 LOYOLA 24
BA 28 MATER DEI 21

Think about this for a while...stare at it if you have to....Damein had almost the identical score as Amat's first playoff game when BOTH teams were peaking and both teams were coached by future HOFers....same for every other game on this list....the only difference???? In every one of those game BA was the underdog...get it you simpleton.

Here's what you don't want to hear....Damien hasn't built the culture where they can SUSTAIN & MAINTAIN...that level of performances across a whole season and that's why we exit early in playoffs...get it...different coaches same result! So instead of wishing for change maybe you can have your kids better mentally committed to playing football like Gates has his player and parents mentally committed to hearing bad words at practice, tough conditioning drills and 110 % commitment...did Damein have that this year? Honestly...did they? How long did it take Bishop Amat to get up to Hagerty "speed"? .... EXACTLY !!!!!

Enjoy Bishop Amat's season and tell me we have players and parents that committed...I know we now have the coaches and the talent...so what's the problem now...oh is it me again? Sorry I'm 150K behind this staff...how about you?...and my kids don't even play football because of people just like you. All talk and no substance or name.

Ain't your kid graduated yet...gee I thought we got rid teh makority last year and the last holdouts this year...lol....next year Gano will step up every aspect of the program and I'm sure doggers will be dealt with differently.

Say Hi some time...I'll buy breakfast at The Peper Tree Cafe and invite randy along for kicks... :>)

Wow,
I posted on another thread how impressed I was with Scroggins. Yes, he is listed as a top 10 quarterback by most national ranking services. So it would be hard to argue that he isn't legit. He is most likely the best quarterback Amat will face this year, but Amat has already faced good to great quarterbacks this season.

I am also aware of the power ratings for each teams opponents this far and there is NO comparison. Amat has faced far better teams.

Gano ain't it... He has a lot of coaches but none achieved anything worthwhile. Damien will be average or below average until he leaves. He is truly over-rated. Damien does have talent returning, but Gano and crew don't push to get determined play and leadership from their players. Gano is weak...

John Capraro achieved remarkable things at Pomona High and he is a DHS graduate and played on Damien's CIF Championship team in 1977. He can bring back the glory with sweat, hardwork, leadership and tradition! Our Lady Queen of Victory, Pray for Us!

Looking at the video I think the defense has more of a worry with receivers getting behind them rather then the QB. He can throw far as it was noted earlier by someone but I don't see any pin point accurracy . Let me just say DiFiori has come up with some excellent game plans on defense and I don't see why he wouldn't for this game.Pressure the QB so he won't have time for the long ball and continue to stuff the run and we will be fine. AMAT WILL SHINE . BB&G great post I liked that one.

Interesting fact...Alberico goes to school at Holy Name of Mary, one block from Damien and enrolls there. After one season and a wrist injury he bails and runs for the Amat hills and has started at DE for the past two years. In that time Alberico has competed against players twice his size and done his thing with distinction. He's also played a part in some of Amat's greatest comeback wins and incredible upsets culminating in a 10-1 season and Serra League Championship and is getting ready to do some more damage on Friday.

This senior class was loaded with talent at Damien their Freshmen year...Polonio, Matthews, Manley, Guillen, Hernandez, Dominguez, Morriosn, Pucci, Hale, Tracey, Sainz, Lewis, ect ect and Alberico...Damien went 3-7 last year as Amat went 7-4....this year Damien went 5-6 and Amat is 10-1.

Too bad....all that talent.

COACHING MATTERS said:

just askin...great in high school doesn't always translate well. From what I hear Jon Rabe was recruited by Oregon as a DT/DE...and fell off the charts after coming in soft his senior year...well that and being coached up by Hile, who...with al due respect isn't Fair, Garrison, howling or Gano and is now a third string Offensive Guard at Nevada completely off the defensive side of the ball and searching for playing time...go figure. With Rabe size and smarts I'd thought he'd make a better center but I'm still a big fan of his. Never seen a kid that big as a freshmen...6'3 260/270 and THICK...if he went to BA he'd be at ND or a PAC 10 school for sure...what a waste of such early talent....crazier still Rabe didn't make Damine's Varsity until his JUNIOR YEAR....THAT'S INSANE...FLAT OUT....SAME WITH 6'6" 335 LB SCHMITTY WHO IS HANGING ON AT CITRUS...IMAGINE WAHT AMAT WOULD AHVE DO WITH...RABE, AUSTIN, SCHMITTY AND CERVANTEZ....WOW!!!

Any way....Robinson had one good year with Jason at QB so I'm too sure about the LB story...but either way JT was a Qb only in his mind...and that was his choice to make.

USC PARENT said:

USC ALum...and yet scouts were goo goo about this Jason as a QB....correct? There are those that say he should have been converted to a Safety seeing as he was a pretty good basketball player as well from what I've read so there's that.

One thing to remember as any Trojan will tell you....nothing is guaranteed at USC. Competition is fierce and rarely if ever is anything promised and "kept" at the school in terms of inference.

Just look at Mustain. He was Gatorade POY and was as good as any QB coming out of HS. Started as a true freshmen at Arkansas and put up legit numbers and won something like 8 games...yet!...he sits at USC and flutters between 2/3/4 string depending on the moon.

During his stay he cometed with Booty, Sanchez and Corps and THEN they bring in Barkley....so how is Scroggins "mapping" it all out for himself...lmao

Next year after he reshirts USC will go out and get another Blue Chip QB and Jesse will be saying to himself....WHAT?

Look I'm not hating as I too have Trojan "ties" literally...LOL...but I see huge gaps in his game and maybe ...God willing...he brings USC another Championship. Hey best of luck to Scroggins..just not Friday Night..

Hold the blog titles here Fred. He's good...but until he wins Gatorade Player of the Year he's not better than Kasdorf.

I just don't see it said:

I remember this kid well....well not THIS kid but a kid just like him..Jason Thomas from Dominguez. At the time a friend of mine was friends with his peeps and we would go see him play. One day as we were talking I said I thought he'd have trouble in college. God I almost had a fight that night. The Long Beach Press Telegram had a photo of him in action right bfor ehis arm was going forward. I told my friend, "See that long release...his arm is way back and his feet are bad...that's trouble. Randall Cunningham has a similar motion, but has better feet and the ball comes out of "his" hand differently...smoother and quicker...just my opinion."

After every one got up in arms again Rodney Peete said..."He's right...I think the same thing but he'll get fixed at USC"...don't ask....lol Kid played behind Carson Palmer and he split to UNLV with former USC/Rams Coach Robinson..had one good year there and disappeared...phenom talent just not a true Qb in the Flacco, Ryan, Stafford, Sanchez, Rogers node...more like a poor man's Randal Cunningham...which ironically this video doesn't show Scroggins runnning well.

I see something different in this kid as well. He locks onto receivers, throws most of his ball deep, lacks from the video a least...out patterns, sit down routes and other technical routes...most of what I say was wide open guys he never took his eyes off of and deep over the top throws.

He ain't Barkley or Mark Sanchez for that matter because he doesn't check off...whether he has to or not against this level of play ...in the end he just should...and that's a terrible habit to break.

Last thing I noticed about this kid i he throws the ball deeeeeep...that's not good if all he's doing is thrwing the ball faaaaaaaar...QBs nknow what I'm talking about.

In his interview I saw two things I did like though...he siad he was going to USC to redshirt and wait for Barkley to leave early...that's good for him in teory but Trojans don't go to USC to sit and wait...and that's bad. Better he went to Florida where he would be a Leak type player.

Sorry...he may beat the Lancers but I don't like Qbs who accept sitting.

just my opinion...great high school Qb....ask yourself ...is he better than the kid at Stanford? No.

One other thing...in the two games against LBPoly last year he completed less than 50% of his passes and threw for more INTs than TDs plus he was sacked multiple times and rushed for less than 20 yards in both games combined!!! That's disturbing.

Amat will have a plan but one thing does bother me...his ability to throw faaaaaaaaaaar and deeeeeeeeep...but that takes time...and may play into the Lancers strength. Should be a good game.

===========
Differance 12.86 avg.

Amat has played tougher teams then Lakewood.
12.86 higher avg. of competition.

Amat 24
Lakewood 21

Trust me Amats Field Goal kicker will make the differnace.

Lakewoods field goal kicker can make extra points but can he boom outside the 30?

Ragsdale given the edge here.

The QB from Lakewood is good but it takes a team of 11 to win on offense and 11 to win on defense. After viewing the QB's Amat has played against I dont think Scroggins is above that class of QB's From Loyola,Mater Dei, Notre Dame, St. Bonnies, Alameny and especially Crespi.

just sayin' said:

what I saw a lot of was some good athletes taking advantage of some bad defensive schemes, poor pass rushes, and awful coverage. Crespi & Notre Dames spread offense looks much more explosive-since we're making the comparison.

Damn no lancer fan, opps let me clarify since both teams are the lancers. No Amat fans can say that this kid isn't legit??? He will be the tougest test and the hardest to tackle because he can scramble and throw the ball 60 yards on the run. He wouldn't be going to USC if he wasn't on par with Matt Barkley, Matt Sanchez, etc. Hopefull you guys pull out the win and get a chance to play Edison.

Dueces.

WOW!
They sure are'nt the smartest guys around, glad they play ball and are not public speakers!
We will see how tough they are friday night. All hype, I would have to say. I have never heard an AMAT player talking past the present week, good job coaching staff!
I am sure there is a box of letters to be distributed after the season, NO distractions here!
FRED,
Four individuals, will never beat our TEAM!

ON BLUE!!!
