Charter Oak's Travis Santiago just fine

| | Comments (11) |

Charter Oak High School football coach Lou Farrar started third-string quarterback Kyle Brown in Friday's 42-0 win over Wilson, and Brown did well in completing 6 of 10 attempts for 119 yards and two touchdowns. According to Farrar, sophomore starting quarterback Travis Santiago "got his bell rung" a week earlier in a 12-0 win over Diamond Ranch, the same game in which backup quarterback Josiah Thropay was lost for the season with a broken collarbone while playing receiver.

Santiago could have played, but with a bye week before the Miramonte League finale against Los Altos on Nov. 13, Farrar thought it was best to give Santiago an extra week off.

He has passed for 946 yards and 10 touchdowns, and the Chargers (8-1, 3-0) moved back on top of the CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division poll Monday, a result of West Covina knocking off No. 1 and previously undefeated Rowland, 32-10 on Friday.

"He (Santiago) should be fine," Farrar said. "The doctor cleared him to play, but you read so much about concussions and head injuries that I thought it was best to be extra cautious. If it was a sprained ankle you ice it, wrap it up and get ready to play. But a head injury is different."

Wilson parent...think that your o-line getting run over most of the night had anything to do with the missed field goals? Kicking a mid-40 yard FG with the D-line in your face isn't as easy as kicking them in warmups. CO turning the ball over twice in the first half coupled with a couple of early Wilson drives limited CO's time of possession which is why they didn't score at the beginning of the game. This all worked itself out in the second and third quarters and, thus, A LOT of points. Then, CO sat most of their starters (on both sides of the ball) for the 4th quarter. It is a 48 minute game so the first quarter score means nothing.

SGV FOOTBALL...both Rowland and Santa Fe lost their QB's so it looks like those teams are not the threat they could have been. I look at the scores of the Southeast teams but like you haven't seen any of these other teams play. If CO figures out their offense coupled with the defense's stellar play than another title is attainable. I'd sure like to see Golden healthy and playing plus some of the o-line is also injured. Hopefully, the week off is what the doctor ordered.

SGV FOOTBALL,

42-0 is a blowout, don't get me wrong. All I am saying is we (parents) were shocked that it took that long for you to get to the 42. The factor that you were playing with your 3rd string qb must have been huge.

Shutting us out, we should have scored, our kicker had a bad game missed three kicks that he would normally make. He made a 45 yarder at the LA game that would have been good from 55. I was watching him at practice today, he made three in a role from 60 yards, nine out of ten from 55 yards.

Wilson Parent,

Come on you an I both know that the Wilson game was a blow out. If it makes you feel any better, yes your right we did not score 35 in the first quarter but did score 14 in the second and 28 in the third if that makes you feel any better and plus we didnt give up any points. Dont forget our third string QB made the start for us.

COChargerfan and CO,

Since we have a by week this week, do you see anyone in playoffs giving us a run for the title this year? I think Burbank might be a decent team but I do not know anything about them. I am still sticking to my prediction at the beginning of the year saying CO will meet SH in the finals. What do you guys think?

"In the end, Wilson got plain crushed."

I personally saw the game a little different than you did. Instead of the first quarter lets chance that to the first half. The score was 7-0 with under two minutes left in the half. 14-0 at half.

We had three drives that resulted in missed field goals, one of them was with less than a minute to go in the game.

In comparsion, the week before, Rowland scored 35 in the first quarter on us, that is a blow out.

Our kids played hard, I am sure your coaching staff didn't expect a 0-0 game at the end of the first quarter, did you?

Brown did throw an INT and one of his TD passes went through the safety's hands before AJ caught it (both passes were dangerous medium long throws over the middle of the field that the safety cherry picked) but, with that said, the kid played really well considering that this was his first ever start. The reason that CO didn't score in the first quarter was because of the turnover on the run back which gave Wilson the ball for pretty much the entire quarter. Wilson did move the ball at the beginning of the game but that ended by the second quarter and then it became "Muema time." The bottom line is that it is a 48 minute game and they don't hand out game balls for a few positive possessions. In the end, Wilson got plain crushed.

CO are you Travis' dad and worried about your son getting suplanted? Relax and give another kid some credit. One good pass? Then how do you explain two touchdowns and another called back due to a holding penalty? Brown did what he was asked to do and didn't turn the ball over

Brown did just fine; you have got to be kidding me. I understand why he was our 3rd string. He had all day back their, never got touched, and managed to throw one good pass all game. Santigao comes back or were out in the first round.

We made Wilson's defense look like studs. I was surpirsed Wilson moved the ball on our defense, multi scoring threats. That Wilson sophomore quarterback listed at 5'9", 155 pounds (no way), maybe 110 pounds that kid had heart. Our defense smashed him and he kept coming back for more.

We played uninspired football; we need to pick it up. This soft schedule to finish off the season isn't going to help us playoff time. Hopefully we bring our A game against LA.
