LOS ALAMITOS -- The buzz at Sunday's CIF-Southern Section pairings draw in Los Alamitos centered around Bishop Amat when the Pac-5 Division playoff pairings were announced, because the Serra League champion Lancers (9-1) drew old friend Mater Dei (6-4), setting up a nostalgic first-round game against the storied Monarchs at Kiefer Stadium on Friday. You can also go straight to CIF to look at all the brackets.

Mater Dei has been one of California's elite programs for decades, owners of nine CIF championships, five undefeated seasons and two USA Today mythical national championships, and a former nemesis of Bishop Amat when the two met annually in the old Angelus League.

With Bishop Amat's five divisional championships, the two schools have 14 titles between them, with Bishop Amat holding an all-time 18-15 head-to-head edge.

"It reminds me of when I played at Bishop Amat, and when I coached here my first time through (as an assistant)," Bishop Amat coach Steve Hagerty said. "It's an old league match-up. They were always the team to beat in league, not much has changed."

Mater Dei finished third in the powerful Trinity League behind champion Servite (9-1) and second place Orange Lutheran (6-4).

"They have so much talent and play in a league where any of those teams could have been league champions," Hagerty said. "It's not like we're playing a third-place team, we're playing a championship-caliber team. That's always the case when you line up against Mater Dei. But if you're going to keep playing, you have to play great teams. I don't know if it was going to be any easier playing them in the second or third rounds, you might as well get them now and hope to move on."

Defending Southeast and Miramonte League champion Charter Oak (9-1) was the top seed in the Southeast Division with San Antonio league champion South Hills (7-3) No. 2.
South Hills and Charter Oak would be a dream area championship between Chargers coach Lou Farrar and South Hills' Steve Bogan, who each own four championships, but there are plenty of spoilers in the division.

Charter Oak will host Muir (4-6), a dangerous fourth-place team from the Pacific League, in the first round.

"When I think of Muir I think of (former coach) Jim Brownfield, it's a heck of a tradition they have," Farrar said of Muir. "They have played some great teams and were actually a few points from winning their league. They always have athletes, and this year is no different."

If the Chargers advance, they will await the winner between San Gabriel (6-4) and host West Covina (6-4), another good first-round matchup. If West Covina and Charter Oak advance, West Covina will host the second round game against the Chargers.

"We're not getting ahead of ourselves," West Covina coach Mike Maggiore said. "I know some people would love to see it, but we have San Gabriel first. They spread it out, throw the ball and score a lot of points. If we get past them, then yeah, a game with Charter Oak would be exciting."

No. 2 South Hills (8-2) will host Bonita (3-7) in the first round. The Bearcats finished third in the Miramonte.

"It's going to be a fun game," Bogan said. "We'll have to prepare for (Bonita coach) Eric Podley's creativity. I've always been a fan of his, he's one of the more creative coaches around."

In other Southeast first-round games, Rowland (8-2) is at Del Rio League champion California (7-2-1) and Diamond Ranch (4-6) is at Burroughs (7-3).
In the Central Division, Sierra league co-champs Damien and Glendora drew first-round games, though both are extremely difficult.

After coin flips, Glendora (7-3) is the second-place team from the Sierra, which means they will host defending champion Rancho Cucamonga (8-2), who slipped to the No. 3 team in the Baseline. The winner would likely get top-ranked Colton (9-1) in the second round.

Damien (5-5), the Sierra League's No. 1, drew Upland (8-2), a fourth-place at-large from the Baseline. The winner would likely get No. 2 Colony, making life difficult for both Glendora and Damien to advance.

"No kidding," Damien coach Greg Gano said. "But the way I look at it, no matter who you got it was going to be tough. Our kids have reacted well the past few weeks, but the speed of the game is going to get a lot quicker."

San Dimas (9-1), Azusa (9-1) and Arroyo (8-2) were the No. 2 through No. 4 seeds respectively in the Mid-Valley Division, with undefeated Monrovia (10-0) No. 1.
San Dimas opens against Workman (6-4), the fourth-place team in the Montivew, with the winner meeting either La Canada (5-4) or Cerritos Valley Christian (6-4) in the quarterfinals.

No. 3 Azusa drew Covina (5-4) in the first round, a rematch of the Aztecs' first-round win over the Colts last season.
The winner will face either San Marino (8-2) or Rosemead (5-5) in the second round.

On the top half of the bracket, South El Monte (3-7) will face top-ranked Monrovia, with the winner facing either Paraclete (6-4) or La Puente (7-3).
Arroyo will be at home against Whittier Christian (7-3), and Baldwin Park (8-2) is at home against Gladstone (7-3). The winners will face each other in the quarterfinals.

All games are scheduled for Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Truth,

I just want my Bearcats to make it a game, because if they don't it will make for what has already been a hard and disappointing season. It was great to see this team grow but in the end it has underachieved and yet still battled through adversity.

However as far as South Hills is concerned, I want to the Bearcats to beat you, but I do know that the task at hand is quite daunting and if it does happen it will be because the Bearcats played beyond themselves and to what their potential has been...while also capitalizing on your Huskies mistakes. I want it to happen, but I'm a realist and know it could be exactly like the game at Charter Oak 38-0 at half-time with your subs playing the rest of the way and not us scoring a single point in the second half.

Practice hard this week Bearcats and pull a miracle for us all to see!

Aaron,

It would be better for Bonita if they played with the lights out...maybe they mught have a chance hahahaha! The only way that Bonita would have a chance is if the JV played them then the game might be kinda close! Well at least attempt to bring it so we can see a half way game...Huskies you got this! SH all the way!

Congratulations to all SGV teams in the playoffs. Now go out and take steps every day to make the experience the best possible. Leave nothing on the field... not just on game night - but every day.

As we debate the pairings ad nauseum, the bottom line is there is no such thing as an easy draw in the Pac5. The committee did a decent job and in a 16 team draw , with the rules they have to follow - there isn't a bunch of wiggle room. I thought we had a chance to sneak past Lakewood into the 4 seed - but our lone loss was fresh in everyone's mind had it been against Bonnies in preleague and we ran the table in the Serra things might have been different. And really Fountain Valley is no bargain either. The bottom line is we don't have peopple convinced yet - and that's fine. It's tough to shake a 3-7 disaster and others still think Hags is doing it with smoke and mirrors. You could tell by the talk on some of the interviews... "Oh, and then there's Bishop Amat..." Or the rep from the CIF office saying that things in the Serra league "changed from their expectations at the last minute...". No one expected the Lancers to win, but there certainly is no one that has TWO signature wins like the Lancers. And I mean NO ONE.

jcaz, brought up a great point that is getting lost in the minutia. It actually is a little better to have a tough first round game - when you are certain to have that at home. If you are fortunate enough to get that one out of the way, get on a roll and get by the 2nd round, you have a better chance at the home game in the semis.

I do find it funny that it is written above that Mater Dei is "our nemesis"... like they have our number or something. The reality is the Lancers have a 19-12 all-time record vs Mater Dei and beat them the last time they visited Keifer. I'm not sure what was a worse game for Matt Barkley - that nights multiple INT game or Saturdays beat down by Stanford. Amat put a similar whuppin' on Matt Leinart when he was a Monarch. So we've dished out a bit and took a bit... most notably their payback of the Lancers in the CIF Finals rematch after we beat them during league in '94. Let's hope this Friday is more like the former than the latter.

What many people won't remember is the deep connection that Amat has with Mater Dei in the sharing of a legendary coach. Long-time Amat assistant coach, Bob Woods, who passed away as a Lancer in the late '80s after spending the late '60s early/'70s (the Haden/Sciarra years) as Head Football Coach at Mater Dei and won an Angelus League Championship in his first year. Bob could tell stories. If I remember there was a time when the Lancers and Monarchs played for a perpetual trophy (kinda like the Smudge Pot - but with a lot less history). It would be great if there was some mention of this on Friday. Coach Woods coached Hags and they were on the staff together - so I know it's special to Steve too. Maybe the Trib could do a bit on it too. Fred?

oh, one more thing. I went into the school office today and asked about tickets for the game on Friday.

They go on sale at the school tomorrow and the cost will be $8.00 dollars for adults and for anyone under 13 years old the cost is 5.00 dollars.

If you are a student of Amat you still don’t get a break. Unlike the regular season when the kids get in for free, CIF takes over here and the tickets will still cost you $8 dollars, however, if you present you student card when you buy your ticket, you get the discounted price of $5 Dollars

Congratulations to the Men in Blue . What a performance on Friday nite. Seems they took that loss against Crespi and learned from it and just dismantled ND. Left no doubt as to who the Serra league champs are this season. We get Mater Dei this Friday and if I am not mistaken the last time we had them at home we beat them .So I am looking to another stellar performance by the team . Remember stay focused and keep your eyes on the prize. Also congratulations to all the other SGV team that made it in and here's to an opening round victory to all of us.
Jcaz,
I know some of us came down on you for your post on Friday and I personally did not mean anything bad about walking thru the HOF and military memorial which are two different spots at AMAT , I know you are an ex Marine and would never insinuate anything to dishonor that . My only point was you needed to get back on the positive side as to we are going to win no matter how stacked against us it looks because we are LANCERS and we can do the impossible, just look at this season 9-1 and league champs . I read your posts on the Satuday QB thread and it seems that fire was renewed in visting the back of the SAC after the game. Even you wrote "kinda makes you proud". Then came your post on the guru thread which was great and you're right we will kick the snot out of the butterfies. Well hopefully no hard feelings and from this homer, welcome back and who knows you might be one of those oldtimers one day sitting up in the stands in the old die hard Alumni section still having that pride run through you even though your days and your kids days are long past at AMAT. But remember there are always Grandchildren of which one of mine will be a LANCER next year.

Amat over Mater Dei Friday.

Amat at home helps but going to Lakewood the following week they will come home empty.

Bottom line is, The Servite Friars will win it all.

Where do I buy tickets?

Last year, we were able to but tickets for the big game at Long Beach memorial stadium at the Amat admin office.

I am more than certain that they will be doing that once again this time around, however, there may not be allot of tickets to sell this time around if only because as many of you know, Amat's stadium is no where near as big as the one out in long Beach.

Better get them early if your coming people.

Hey, one thing more here. For all you real football junkies out there, all of the city playoff games are going to be played on Thursday night instead of on Friday.

I think that I might just head on over to see Crenshaw play Birmingham.

In times past that game might have been for a championship but not this time around. Cal preps has Crenshaw wining big, but for me, I just want to see just how good those guys really are compared to the Pac5 schools.

Mission Viejo will win the pac 5. They have reloaded again with a lot of quality players. Colton will not win their division as they are only a running team and rarely throw. Plus they play in one of the weakest league with the likes of Pacific,San G,San Bernardino,Cajon and Arroyo Valley. I like Colony or Los Osos in this division.

Theres lots of rules that CIF must follow to make these brackets work, and it isn't easy. No matter what, there are going to be unfair draws, and some will get it easier than others. Still, the best team should win. No need to complain, if you are the best team in your division, no path should scare you, because your suppose to win every game in front of you. The best team will win the championship, and if they don't, they only have themselves to blame. Not the brackets.
Last year, everyone said that Rosemead and San Dimas being in the same bracket was so unfair because those two should have faced off in the championship game. Turns out, Paraclete won the division. So much for that theory.
Play the games in front of you, and quit whining about it.

Smallcitymc said:

ND got the better paring. Amat got shafted, but this can't be any worse than taking on Poly last year in the first round. And we all know they almost won that game. BTW, Mater Dei lost to Edison in double o/t. So don't assume they are on a "down year." Amat and Mater Dei are the same in that they can play with anybody on any given day.

Mater Dei runs a great program. If you've ever been to their school you know they have excellent facilities. I hope Amat will one day have the money to upgrade all their facilities, classrooms included. The gym is a good start.

Regardless of the outcome, Amat is already a winner this year. The coaching staff took a bunch of kids who weren't expected to win more than 3 or 4 games and turned them into a force to be reckoned with. With the coaching staff's reputation and the teams record, no one is going to take them lightly in playoffs.

One word of advice for those wishing to attend. Get your tickets ASAP. They are going to go fast!

Ken that's a great strategy, as long as our boys bring the heat all night long and we hold onto the ball we can do. The Bearcats have too much pride and gone through too much adversity as a team to let South Hills walk over them. All I know is I'd rather back a Husky into a corner than a Bearcat. That being said our boys have to play their best game of the season and they will.

Diamond Ranch, both our draws are horrible...looking at it from your perspective both Bonita and DR are going to get spanked.

But Anyways, pass the Tang Ken, let's see the Bearcats give it all they've got, hopefully we get out and travel to Covina.

No one in the Mid Valley division would say that Monrovia possibly getting Paraclete in the 2nd round is a good draw. San Dimas is set up to play Olympic league champion Valley Christian in the qtrs. SD is the only seed that may face a league champ in 2nd round. Shouldn't that qtr. final honor have gone to Arroyo being seeded #4? And Arroyo gets Whittier Christian? This is a team that is 7-3 and played very close games versus defending state champs St. Margarets, Paraclete & Valley Christian. While La Canada & Gladstone don't go to seeds? Seems to me if you want to reward the 4 seeds you don't do it by giving the #1 & #2 a much tougher road to the semi's than #3 Azusa. Nice job CIF you guys couldn't find water if you fell out of a boat. Again...

Don't forget that we "CO" suck because we havn't played anyone this year, maybe we can make the semis if the good lord permits.

Good Luck to all the SGV teams playing this week. You have all played hard all season long. Now the fun begins. This is all icing on the cake. The only sad part is that only one team will win their last game now. Here's my take on the play-offs. Amat you have had a great season. I don't think you will over look Mater Dei. You 2 do have history and I can assure you that they will be ready. I can't see you guys losing focus with the prize within your sight. Every game in that division will be a battle.

The other division that really interest me because there are quite a few SGV teams in it is the Southeastern Division. I think after the first round the games will be very interesting. We could be looking at some very good match-ups as we go through the brackets. WC-CO could be the best early match-up. I think SH has the easiest path to the finals. They might drop the double nickel on Bonita in the first round. I'm sure they are looking at their side and licking their chops at a possible rematch with DR. (be careful what you ask for could be another DR ambush) If Ball returns this week Rowland could be a dangerous team. A couple weeks ago I said that it would be and all SGV final. I think when it's all said and done it's still going to be a SH-CO final. I'm sure some of those players at SH would love to say hello to Santiago.

Amat vs. Mater Dei- Classic Match up. This is exactly what Amat wants. All the Pac-5 teams will have to play good teams to get the finals. The top four seeds may have easier 1st games but don't count out some upsets. Amat will need to stay focused on the next game only..... in order to advance. This is a good thing. I have watched every game this year including our loss to Crespi. Amat has had a tough schedule and I believe our league along with the games with Alemmany and St Bonnies has gotten this team ready for playoffs. In order to be the best you have to play the best. The bracket that Amat is in is the toughest. Go Amat

BA has definitely drawn the toughest first round opponent in Mater Dei. I had a feeling this was going to happen because BA was unseeded. Mater Dei only lost by a touchdown to Edison, a field goal to Orange Lutheran, and 10 points to Servite. Mater Dei is the real deal.

On top of that, if BA has any dreams of playing for a championship, they have to beat #1 seed Edison to get there.

All in all, I think Bishop Amat got kinda screwed by the CIF. But no matter, our boys will bring it, earn the respect of the CIF, and make the SGV proud once more.

SGV FOOTBALL said:

Obviously we shouldnt look past Mater Dei. They might be having a down year compaired to the Mater Dei of the past few years, but they have played some good team tough.
Go Amat!

Sierra League gets it rough in Central said:

Glendora starts off the playoffs with RC. then after that...... COLTON. who has been beating teams by 60 and 70. they will do this without Andre Holmes (knee) yikes!

Damien gets Upland... then colony. and rumor has it, they lost Ryne Morrison for the rest of the year.

Then theres Chino Hills, who in my opinion has the easiest road. they get Elsinore, then the winner of Cajon and Etiwanda.

Jeeeeeeeeez this is a rough division!

Life in the Pac-5 is tough....

Mater Dei is such a tough team to gauge, they played teams like Edison and Servite tough, beat Corona Centennial, and then barely squeak by Jordan and lose to O-Lu. Not sure which Mater Dei we are going to see.

Mater Dei also has a very good coaching staff. Bruce Rollinson has been breading talent for USC for the past decade. The most interesting match up might be between Rolls' and Hags'. Two great football minds.

Hag's will have the men ready to play, Amat's playing at home, everything is starting to click at just the right time for Amat, and this team seems to have that "something" that gets them through big games.

Go AMAT!!!!

Lakewood? said:

Amat should get the fourth seed. The Guru has Lakewood getting the fourth. I don't see Lakewood getting the fourth seed because they haven't really played anyone. They did beat Long Beach Poly, but Poly isn't the traditional power we are used to seeing this season. Other than that their league doesn't compare to the Serra League, plus Amat's strength of schedule looks a lot tougher than Lakewood's. I haven't had time to see who's schedule was ranked tougher through max preps, but I have a feeling that Amat's win's and even one loss is better than Lakewood's. What do you think Joe Amat?
