WALNUT - The goals for Saturday's CIF-Southern Section Cross Country Prelims at Mt. San Antonio College were twofold - advance to the following week's CIF-SS Finals and survive. The Division 2 boys efforts were highlighted by Glendora and Heat 3 race winner Anthony Castro (15:17).

The Tartans won the race in a mark of 1:18:43.

In Division 3 boys, La Canada, paced by senior Aayush Shah (12th, 16:12), South Hills, led by junior Jonathan Flores (10th, 16:16), and South Pasadena, guided by race winner Samuel Pons (15:13), all qualified by finishing fifth in Heats 1, 2, and 3.

Bosco Tech (1:24:12) and Maranatha (1:25:12), which finished third and fourth, respectively, in the Division 4, Heat 1 race, also advance to state.

The Tigers' J.J. Dominguez (third, 16:09) and the Minutemen's Brian Sacripanti (seventh, 16:39) led their teams.

Pasadena Poly (1:28:06) and Flintridge Prep (1:28:39) shone in Division V boys.

The Panthers won their Heat 3 race while the Rebels were second.

Prep's Kevin Heintz (sixth, 17:12) topped Poly's Wesley Devoll (seventh, 17:14) and Anand Upadhyaya (eighth, 17:16).

In girls competition, fourth-place Bonita (1:38:05), paced by Marissa Scott (sixth, 18:29) and Lexie Jackson (ninth, 18:43), qualified in the Division 3, Heat 1 race.

Perennial power St. Lucy's (1:38:39) advanced out of Heat 2 by taking fourth.

Taylor Hebb (15th, 19:15) set the pace for the Regents.

Rivals Mayfield (second, 1:39:27) and Flintridge Sacred Heart (fourth, 1:43:37) assured themselves of one more meeting, as they both fared well in the Division 4, Heat 3 race.

Mayfield's Michelle Gonzales (third, 19:15) and Karina Alvarez (seventh, 19:29) and Flintridge's Stephanie Vargas (eighth, 19:32) all were solid.

In Division V, the Flintridge Prep girls (1:49:56) took third in Heat 1 with two top-10 placers in Dot Silverman (third, 20:50) and Kaitlyn Kelleher (seventh, 21:04).

There were three individual qualifiers, led by Arcadia's Catrina McAlister (17:53), who clinched the win in the Division 1, Heat 3 race.

Glendora's Lauren Justus (third, 18:11) competed in Division 2, Heat 3 while Rosemead's Brittnie Munoz (18:20) was also third and advanced out of Division 3, Heat 3.
