Saturday Morning Quarterback: San Dimas is too good for Baldwin Park; Bishop Amat pulls off a stunning victory over Notre Dame to capture the Serra; South Hills pounds Rowland, 42-14

| | Comments (153) |

Friday's results
Bishop Amat 31, Notre Dame 14 -- Talk about the perfect ending to the regular season, not only do the Lancers win, but they share their first piece of the Serra League title since joining the league in 2002. And because Crespi lost, there are no coin flips, the Lancers go to the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. Jay Anderson rushed for 215 yards and three TDs, and Jerry McClanahan threw for 257 yards and a TD.
San Dimas 35, Baldwin Park 16 -- The Saints were simply too good, and should keep the Mid-Valley Division's No. 2 seed. I don't know if they will meet Monrovia or Crespi, but the Saints will be in the finals awaiting the winner.
South Hills 42, Rowland 14 -- Geoffrey Vaughns rushed for 172 yards and five touchdowns in another Huskies blowout. So what do you think about their chances against Charter Oak now?
Charter Oak 38, Los Altos 0 -- The Chargers go their fourth straight shutout and blanked the entire Miramonte league for the first time in history. I guess that's a way of saying goodbye since they move to the Sierra next season.
Rosemead 37, Gabrielino 14 -- This nails down the second place finish in the Mission Valley league.
Arroyo 44, South El Monte 0 -- On paper the Eagles were playing for a piece of the league title, but in reality they didn't have much of a shot.
La Puente 35, Gladstone 24 -- The Warriors continued playing well since the Azusa loss, nailing down second in the Montview, which should earn a home game in the playoffs.
Azusa 28, Workman 0 -- The Aztecs should earn the Mid-Valley Division's three seed. You know what, they might end up meeting San Dimas in the semifinals.
West Covina 46, Nogales 7 -- The Bulldogs did what you expect, now the fun begins, who will they get in the Southeast's first round?
Chino Hills 42, Diamond Bar 14 -- The Huskies finish in a three-way tie in the Sierra, but lose the coin flip and will go as the No. 3 entry. Damien is No. 1, with Glendora No. 2
Covina 24, Northview 23 -- The Vikings gave the Colts a run for their money, but the Colts nailed down the VVL's third playoff spot.
Walnut 30, Bonita 15 -- A nice way for the Mustangs to finish. It's a shame that a 7-3 team doesn't get in the playoffs.
Diamond Ranch 25, Wilson 7 -- For the second straight year, the Panther enters as the No. 2 from the Southeast. Like West Covina, they're dangerous.
El Monte at Mountain View
Duarte at Bassett, 7 p.m.

Breaking News ... The three-way coin flip in the Sierra League between tri-champions Chino Hills, Damien and Glendora is completed, Damien goes in as the No. 1 seed, with Glendora No. 2 and Chino Hills No. 3

Most Louis Vuitton Handbags have adjustable handles, to use them. Large bags should never hang in the hips: if necessary shorten the handle so that the bag reaches its size.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Aztec Pride, keep doing what you do! You have every right to be proud of your team. I'll be rooting for you guys on Thursday night!

By the way, I really am The Voice of the Warriors...I've been the PA announcer for the LP varsity football games for the past ten seasons. I played for the Warriors way back in 75 & 76. I graduated from LP in 77, I've coached football & baseball at LP and at a couple of other high schools in SGV, my son played for the Warriors for all 4 yrs at LP. So you see, I like you, take great pride in my team. Win or lose, I'll always be a Warrior! Take Care my friend.

PS. I hate the freakin' Raiders...I'm a Die Hard Rams fan...but that a story for another day.

VOICE OF THE WARRIOR,

I've got to admit your moniker is pretty cool! What are you the president of the booster club? just kidding...

You know what VOICE, i've got to give it to LP, they're very competive and always seem to compete real good with AZUSA! I've been to alot of games through the years and everytime I watch LP they bring their A game, making for some good exciting games! I actually want LP to win on Friday, and beat the clete!

Your right lets move forward, and wish the entire Montview League well on Friday!

GOOD LUCK TO YOU VOICE AND YOUR TEAM!

OK Azusa Pride, It's time for us to move forword here. We both have tough games this week. I wish your team the best on Thursday night and yes, we'll have our hands full with Paraclete on Friday night. Seriously, I think LP got the toughest draw of any of the Montview league teams in the first round. Paraclete is the defending Mid-Valley Div. Champions. They have been in the CIF finals back to back years and what's even scarier is, they have won 6 CIF titles in the past 12 years. The Warriors will have to play flawless football on Friday night but I believe WE have a fighting chance.

Go Warriors!

Walnut people please!!! I'm going to have to agree with What the H@ll on this one. You are starting to sound like the whiney people they say you are. To tell you the truth, people were looking at you and saying Wow it's a shame that a team that's 7-3 didn't make the play-offs. The bottom line is that at this point what difference does it all make. What't the point of getting on here and saying this and that went wrong for Walnut. I guess it's always fun to jump on top of the dog pile.
Truth be told I think Walnut did as well as most knowledgable football thought they would. Their season ended basically when they lost to South Hills. They could have phoned in the Bonita game, but they didn't. To me that showed that the players did take pride in their team. Lets spend the rest of our blog time talking about the teams that are still playing.

Careful OLD DUDE, I didn't come in here name calling and mentioning parts of the ANATOMY that are BIG! Since you say your so old, I like to know how old are you?. Do go back when the RAMS were playing here in LA, and remember players like Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen , Pat Haden, the fearsome foursome etc. These were names that were thrown around back in my day?. Or are you one of those RAIDER NATION fans when Marcus Allen, Jim Plunkett etc. were playing here in LA,because if your from that era, your not that OLD! You might be thinking what I'm trying to say here, but I'm just trying to figure out how old are you?.LOL...

By making a statement like you did and placing your team with the CHAMPIONS, makes no sense and falls under the category of, could of,would of,should of. This is like when a team loses and the fans come in here and start making excuses on why they lost and THE TEAM THAT BEAT THEM,ISN'T THAT GOOD!!! By you insinuating that any of those three teams could of won, that's like saying YOUR also the LEAGUE CHAMPS, BUT THE REALITY IS YOUR NOT! You also brought up that you gave AZUSA props when they won LP, the funny thing is, I don't recollect that and all I remember reading is, The COULD OF, SHOULD OF, WOULD OF, factor by your other LP faithful!

Also you want to talk about coaches, I'll be the first to say, that AZUSA has a good coach right now who know's the game of football! I'll say this also, your new coach is also good for doing what he did this season, compared to what happened to your coach last year!

You know what Voice, we shouldn't be arguing and (YOU) should be worrying about who your playing in the playoffs? Ohhhhh, let me remind you PARACLETE, LAST YEARS C.I.F CHAMPIONS, MAN TOUGH DRAW!

Thanks for being apart of the program for a few years. I have been watching and have been apart of the program and all of Walnut sports for since the late 80's. It's from all of those years that I draw my conclusions from.

So when a team skips out of a practice, and despite what your son says, they only returned because of Cooper's mom coming over, that is disrespectful to the staff and the entire program. If you can defend that, then that explains why Walnut has the kind of program it does plain and simple.

How many other program parents would support that? Amat? WestCo? Rowland? South Hills? CO? I'll just sit back and wait.

This is why Walnut will never be taken seriously. You call it a senior prank, but how many other schools in the valley would have done that? South Hills? WestCo? doubt it. It goes to show what everyone says, Walnut players are immature and selfish.

You and real insider say I am trying too hard or what not, but parents need to understand that this is what the coaches deal with. While other programs have players that are focused into getting better ours are thinking of a "senior prank".

I have been around Walnut football for a long time and I have never heard of this before. How about the fact that some of the players said they just didn't want to go?

Be positive, that's fine. I still say this has set a bad precedent.

I'm watching some of you guys jump all over Aaron here for supporting his alma mater and kh his kid while I find it a wonder every year that Bonita even plays in the same league as Charter Oak, not to mention a Division with schools like South Hills, Muir, and Santa Fe, much less actually winning a game from time to time. Frankly, most La Verne boys with plans for football greatness find their way down the hill at Damien or even over at Glendora.

Most areas nearby have a youth football program like jrallamerican or popwarner, some have more than one. La Verne, graciously, goes the other way by sharing their kiddie program with neighboring San Dimas. Generosity, thy name is La Verne. Not only that, but the LVSD program is generally acknowledged as the 'nicest', fans, players, fields, etc. amongst those they compete with.

(Since I'm unfamiliar with the depth of the reader's personal knowledge of the game, I'll just tell you here that 'nice' is not very high on the priority list when developing football players.)

One might actually argue that growing future football stars is kinda low on the to do list over in La Verne. For most kids at Bonita, the frosh team tryouts are their first experience with organized football, (other than the wildly popular Junior High 'Flag' version which has as about much to do with football as little league does with baseball), so by the second year of HS ball you end up with a kind of sacrificial process by which other sports like wrestling, basketball, and baseball give up their athletes to play on Friday. This, all the while Spring and Winter Coaches twist in the breeze waiting to see who will be the next guy to show up on crutches Monday.

Don't get me wrong, I imagine if you were to poll the Braumgard's, Mikity's, the Horine's, Highley's, Huth's and others who have suffered game limiting or season ending injuries this year, they would have done it all over again the same way. Kids are there for their teammates and school, dam the torpedoes, let's play.

So rather than crack on the Bonita Team for their lack of success this season, stand amazed at previous successes and wish them well against whoever they draw next week. Aaron, kh, keep on cheering your favorites.

Hey Aztec Pride,

What part of my comment ("Any one of the top 3 teams in the Montview League could have won this year") are you confused about? My statement was pretty CLEAR! I gave Azusa props for out playing La Puente on one night this season and I mentioned that Azusa was well deserving of the league title. So Azusa won back2back league titles...that's a testiment to their consistant good coaching. You'll get no argument from me on that but let me give you a little bit of advice before your big head explodes. Let me tell you that it's a long drop from the top my friend and if you've been following this league like I have, you should know that there has been 5 different Montview league champions in the past 10 years, with La Puente leading the count with 4 of the last 10 league titles (00, 01, 02 and 07). By the way, those 4 league titles were under 3 different head coaches...and La Puente has had 4 different head coaches in the passed 7 years. Now THAT'S a testiment to the kind of TALENT they have over at LPHS. Hopefully our first year head coach Brandon Rohrer and his excellent coaching staff will be around for awhile. If that happens...then you'll see league dominance! In the meantime...Best of luck to all of our Montview League teams in the play-offs!

GO Warriors!!!

Great way to end the season for Walnut. Players stepped up in a big way. 3 of their starting linemen did not even dress for the game due to injury or sickness. I believe there were two sophomores starting....props to coaches for giving them the right blocking schemes to get the job done. I saw some good technique. Also, the defensive play calling was outstanding. Dialed up the blitz at the right times...proved to be a huge factor. Holding a high scoring team like Bonita to 15 is impressive....they have play makers...keeping the ball out of their hands was huge.

Fans got their monies worth...we scored on defense...offense...and special teams. That's the way to end a season. Kids are already excited about next season.

Next season looks very promising for Walnut.

Thanks to all of the Seniors from Walnut (and the SGV) for a great season / entertainment.

I have mentioned Hicks before...just not by name. He and another that did not play have very strong arms. Brandon is a very capable QB...probably has the most football knowledge. Needs to bulk up a little...

As far as the ditched practice....really?? You have to post....and make a big deal out of an attempted Senior prank?? You are trying way to hard....way to hard.

Nothing like having between eight and nine guys out since the fifth week of the season and being lucky to get one back. That's alright though, the adversity of that will help the team later not only next week because of all the young kids having to play but in life.

Hey Ken, thanks for the update and that's good we'll need him next week.

You seem to know so much about Football, why don't you go help out. Because the thing that takes the purity of Football away, is not the staff nor the kids. Its people like you, that talk about stuff that have no real idea what they are talking about.

And don't say you weren't at the game on Friday and hide your identity, because if you are an insider you would be there. Yes, you were there. You just blogged from your cell phone to try and cover your tracks.

Ok, after talking to some people yesterday I can confirm that a majority of Walnut's team skipped out on a practice this past week. Seems like they had the "just didn't want to go" attitude. Cooper's mom went over to where they were and yelled at them to go to practice. So they were about an hour late.

The bigger story could be that some sophomores were due to start as punishment for the players skipping out, but that didn't happen for everyone. This could come back to haunt the staff next year.

I have said all along that 60% of the troubles falls on the players and now you know why. To skip out on a practice, last game of the year no less, shows what kind of character Walnut players have now.

You have a snowball's chance in hell of making it past the first round of the playoffs. Walnut who isn't even going to the playoffs at 7-3 absolutely embarrassed your team last Friday night. You have no defense (contrary to what the bumbling fool mumford thinks), no running game, and a qb that will be good someday, but not quite yet. And as far as beating teams going to CIF; we actually beat three you boob.

And as far as next year is concerned. Don't you think you should put more thought into why your team tanked their homecoming game? Or are they like the Lakers and think they can throw the switch when it is crunch time? Sorrrrrry, it doesn't work that way in high school.

Bishop Amat: Serra League Champs(CBS)

"The surprise Friday night was not that Bishop Amat won, but how they knocked off the defending Serra League champs, Notre Dame. Jay Anderson ran for a career high 215 yards and 3 TD, while Jerry McClanahan had arguably his best performance of the season, throwing for a career high 257 yards and a score.

As so eloquently called on our HS Rewind last Sunday by Eric Sondheimer of the LA Times, Amat was indeed victorious. The Lancers picked up yet another home victory, defeating Notre Dame 31-14 at Kiefer Stadium. I don't want to say La Puente's Lancers had their way with the Knights. Notre Dame was banged up entering Friday night's game. Most notably, leading receiver Tyler Thomas did not play and watched from the sidelines in street clothes. But Amat pretty much controlled the game from start to finish. The Lancers played tenacious D and the only points from the Knights offense came at the end of the first half via the two minute drill, and at the end of the second half. Amat was already up 31-7 when Ryan Kasdorf scored a rushing TD to make it 31-14.

Amat was extremely physical and ran to the ball. Kenny Boggs nor Kasdorf could get loose. The running lanes closed in a hurry.

La Puente's Lancers capture the Serra League crown tonight with the win. Thanks in part to Loyola's 41-37 win over Crespi. Amat and Notre Dame finish league play with 2-1 records and the Lancers get the league's top seed because of the head to head matchup. Both teams secure a PAC 5 playoff berth. Loyola finishes 3rd over Crespi because of the head to head tiebreaker. The win also gives Amat a chance of securing one of the top four seeds in the PAC 5 bracket. Its the first Serra League title for the Lancers since joining the league in 2002.

There was an Amat supporter in the crowd Friday night that said "We don't lose here." Actually, that has been the case recently. The Lancers extended their home winning streak to 11 games and have not lost a home game under 2nd year head coach Steve Hagerty. The last loss at Kiefer Stadium came November 2, 2007 to Notre Dame.

The playoffs begin next Friday, unless agreed upon by the competing schools. A home game for the Lancers could be in the works. The Chain Gang will be there, will you?"

Two years in a row we came out on the raw end of a coin flip in '05 we beat the CO who was the league champion and we finished 8-2. It was worse in '06 when we beat Diamond Ranch and we were 7-3, Jeff Chavez pulling the us on his back and willing us to win and then the defense coming up with a goal line stand that won us the game. Diamond Ranch advanced right after we had just beat them...what made it worse was when they conducted their senior night activities after the coin flip and we went home.

I'd rather have done what the kids from La Canada and Temple had done those two years then work with a coin flip. Because in those boys let their work on the field determine whether they kept going or the seniors turning in the jerseys one final time on Saturday morning.

Aaron,

Pretty wild scenario. Temple City loses to San Marino that creates a 3-way tie with La Canada. San Marino wins the coin flip - so TC and LC have to play a tiebreaker for the final spot.. TC loses and stays home for the playoffs.

Tell me, because you were there first hand. Would you rather have the third playoff spot decided that way... or through a three-way flip like Bonita cam out on the raw end of. I'm thinking at least TC had it in their own hands and decided on the field.

And technically, the system used is officially the “25-Yard Tie Breaker System” as defined in the CIF Blue Book. As opposed to the “10-Yard Tie Breaker System” that some areas use, and the Amat folks remember from the legendary 5OT battle with St Paul that some attribute to the removal of OT - then the return form the 25 instead. Many people, and unfortunately among them some writers, simply call any tiebreaker used in California - a "California TieBreaker". That's how all myths, urban legends, and old-wives tells live on. Misinformation.

But the old folks may remember the real "California TieBreaker" that was used in the '70s. The ball was put on the 50-yard line. The offenses alternated plays - one at a time - until each team had run four plays. The offense and defense would run on and off the field after every play and at the end, if the ball was spotted on your opponent's side of the field, then your team won.

Amat won a BIG CTB game vs Los Altos in the mid '70s with a catch on the Los Altos 49 yd line to win by 1 yard! That may have been the last time the Lancers and Conqs met on the gridiron. (I think it was Los Altos. We beat Pasadena with a tiebreaker too at some point. They say the mind's the second thing to go... I don't remember the first!)

Aaron said:

So no one is talking about the California playoff that TC and LC had last night. I don't understand exactly what it was as I was listening to to the Mid Valley Sports Show. Temple City had to go play an overtime essentially against La Canada after Temple City lost to San Marino and La Canada beat South Pasadena.

all i can say is wow! what a great game last night. simply put, i thought this was the most complete, thorough, and balanced game bishop amat has played in the 2 years i've been watching. run and pass defense was stellar and run and pass offense was dominantly efficient. i can't remember my exact words in a post last week, but i had a feeling something special would happen friday versus notre dame and it certainly did. mcclanahan, anderson, and ruiz had great games and deserve lots of credit, but did anyone else notice how dominant bishop amat's offensive and defensive lines were? nothing short of extraordinary. truly a pleasure to see. i don't think the score indicated how in charge of that game bishop amat was. i can't wait to see who bishop amat draws for the first round or the eventual path it would have to take to make it all the way. my only regret from last night is that my son johnson did not score (johnson is not my son, but i couldn't resist making that joke as someone suggested he was my son on another topic... sorry xyz lol). at any rate, bishop amat has proven it is worthy of its place among the top teams in the pac-5 for sure. good luck next week. i will be there and can't wait. on another note, i would like to congratulate all the sgv teams that will be going to the playoffs. i agree with joe amat in that regardless of level, each student-athlete who gives of his/her time practicing and learning the lessons of the game and life should be proud of any and all accomplishments for i truly believe that if everyone could do it, everyone WOULD do it. congrats to all.

Naaaaaaaaaa sorry folks. Ha ha ha.

Notes on Amat:

I think that the absolutely funniest moment of the entire night came at the end of the football game when all of those kids rushed on to the football field. Once they got half way there, either one of the school administrators, or one of the coaches stared them down and gave them a very stern look. Once they saw that, they all ran back to the stands with their tails between their legs. If was really funny to see.

As for the game itself, Davis Cazares once again was a monster on defense. He laid out more than a few of the receivers last night and when he ventured into the backfilef, he ended slamming down more than his fair share of running backs

In this game the defense more then stepped up, and it was clearly evident in the way both lines frustrated their game plans. In fact, if many of you recall, in the last visit by the Knights to Kiefer, their quarterback ran for a seventy yard on the third play from scrimmage. This time however, I was more that certain that it must have come as quite a shock to kasdorf to see that he couldn’t do nearly half of the same things tht he did to us last year.

I believe that the Knights whole game plan was to come in to Kiefer and replicate the success that they enjoyed against us last year, but it soon became clear that this was not going to be business as usual. Wow, what a difference a year makes.

You know, last night after the game, a few of us parents and some of the football players went to see a late night showing of 2012. During the ride to the movies, one of the kids shared some of the more “colorful” language that coach Hags had expressed to the team as a whole earlier in the week in which he had made a point of telling them that he was more than disappointed at the way the Crespi quarterback had manhandled our team last week.

Anyway, to say that he really wanted to express his “belief” that the team would perform much better this time around was kind at best, and of course, the end result showed out there on the field last night.

BTW, I know that often so many people head straight to the parking lot at the conclusion of a game, but if many of you ever have some free time afterward a a home game at Kiefer, some of you should stick around just a few extra minutes to see just how the Lancers celebrate a victory. The band, the cheerleaders and the team all get together behind the SAC and just go absolutely crazy ! It’s always so much fun to see it all of that excitement and shear pride displayed right after a game. Kinda makes ya proud !!

Simply awesome !!

Wow! I just can't get over what Hags and crew have done at BA. In fact, I'm quite jealous. Congrats BA! Amazing year with what most seem to say wasn't the best talent around. Like Joe has been saying for years. Coaching matters. Way to rep for the SGV boys. PLEASE do damage in the post-season! If my boys only had that type of coaching....oh the possiblities. Good luck Lancers!

Freddy,

Not a bad call on the photographer. Game of the Week is always a tough one inthe SGV, because I completely get the "two-valley teams" matchup. When we play someone form out of the area - even though it may be a better game, higher level of play, etc, etc... the local angle really makes sense. The "Cover-it-Live" thing looked kind of cool - so I'm certain many in the Amat Family appreciate that service (some pro teams use that on their websites home page - so you're in good company!) I'd even suggest you leave the filter off and just allow anyone to comment with their updates from any game - then the whole valley can keep tabs on each other in the playoffs.

Which leads me to say something I meant to mention in response to someone yesterday - but is even better today. While an Amat victory and a championship in one of the toughest leagues in the country is an outstanding achievement, for the kids involved a league title feels just as special for the players at San Dimas or Azusa and a coin-flip elimination is just as devastating for a Bonita as it was for the Lancers the last time in the old OC/Serra configuration.

So congratulations to all the league champions for great accomplishments... and to those whose season ended - or whose football careers may have - realize that it is possible to be extremely proud of how hard you've worked, and still be disappointed in the result. Take those lessons forward - that's what sports is really about.

and smallcitymc... I was thinking the same thing when I saw the headline. We hope to get back to the point where everyone doesn't think these victories are "stunning" - but expected. You could see the confidence and "swagger" in the players eyes last night. The "swagger" I mentioned yesterday afternoon - the focused swagger that says "I'm ready to do my best - because my best is needed".

I loved Jerry's confidence and how hard Anderson ran. I loved how the defense flew at the ball and the schemes to put pressure on Kasdorf. On another note - I'm pretty sure the message got back to Jay that we don't want to cross that line to the wrong kid of swagger. There was somewhat of a disrespectful gesture near the sidelines after scoring the touchdown that, essentially, put it away. I know it was just emotions getting in the way and sometimes it's hard not to get excited, but someone is always watching. Jay knows what I'm talking about - so we'll leave it at that. But that's not the way we do things. just keep pounding away and let your game do the talking.

"....And if we should win let it be by the code - With our faith and our honor held high..."

Great effort by Walnut last night to close a very dissapointing season in which they missed the playoffs
i guess all we can look towards is next season
ive heard alot of questions about whos gonna be the next qb but no one has mentioned the new kid hicks(from Duarte) who has been with the team since midseason but was practicing with the JV and didnt suit up for any games. I saw him at practice and his accuracy needs improvement but he blasted a perfect spiraled 50yds down the field. I dont see brandon or the JV qbs leading this team next year. just a thought
and at RB we have a solid group coming up and WR we have 2 returning staters in #17 and coleman
at LB restrepo and collins return
although our DBs and line will need work

all we can do now is hope next season is better but wish the best of luck to our seniors in their future

You know, life is so funny sometimes. Here we sit tonight on what could be an extraordinary run by the lancers into the Pac5 playoffs this year. However, it may never even happen. But, if the team does in fact get there, I have no doubt that they can go very very far. Having said that, there is nevertheless a possibility that they may never even get the chance to prove just how good of a team they truly are this year.

What a tragedy to actually have a far better record this time around than last, and not even be able to show just how good you are. Man, what a raw deal.

HEY JACAZ, what maybe now you are a believer. We Lancers stand tall and go to battle as confident as ever. What is your story?

I went to every freshman game in Jay's freshman year. Everyone knew back then that he would be a star. Some kids develop the "it" factor and some kids already have it. I don't believe I'm taking anything away from him by saying he had the "it" factor even back then. Yes, I know he works hard and nothing comes easy for him, but you can just sense his talent when you see him. As many of us mentioned back then and do now, Jay will be a legitimate D-1 prospect should he decide to continue his football career.

I don't believe you can use the word "stun" when talking about an Amat victory anymore. They've proven themselves over these past 2 years. What "stuns" me is the fact that some folks still don't seem to take them seriously. The funny thing is that they play better in bigger games.

Damien congrats. You deserve the #1 seed.

Fred,

Next time Bonita plays a football game, make sure that correspondent Mike Mumford covers the game. What a joke! Reading the Walnut 30, Bonita 15 article you would think that Bonita was in control of the game!

His opening sentence that Bonita's defense held tough was so homeristic that I could puke. I haven't seen the stats yet but I'll bet Walnut went for 400-500 yards on offense and was never in danger. The only time Bonita moved the ball was with help from penalties. And he also forgot to mention that his qb was sacked 8 times. 8 times in one game against Walnut! 3 of those sacks came in the fourth quarter in the same series and all by the same player; Aubrey Coleman.

I'm pissed that our group of seniors won't get the chance to experience the CIF playoffs. Almost all of the non-leagues opponents that we beat are going on and we're stuck at home with a 7-3 record. My hat's off to South Hills, West Covina, and Rowland. I have a feeling that all three will do some damage in the playoffs. I just wish that we would have beaten one of them!

Anyways.... Fred don't worry about the critics of your work. You do a fine job and keep us well informed on all the happenings in the Valley. We are very lucky to have you as our writer. Keep up the good work.

The GURU's biggest mistake was judging Amat based on his experience with South Hills. Those school's football programs are from two different worlds but this is hard to explain to someone that is unfamiliar with the Pac-5. I hope the last two seasons have been an educational experience for the GURU.The last time, he treated Amat's victory over St. Bonaventure like a fluke...he hardly acknowledged what was the greatest upset in YEARS in So Cal. High School football.

Perhaps this time, the GURU will actually congratulate Bishop Amat without having to be called on to do so.

This score could have been 45-14 had it not been for a fumble and the TD that was called back. In my opinion when you have a more equal match in size and wieght, this team is going to be hard to beat. This is why we did so well against ST Paul. I hope they get the same results next week. I hope everyone understands that we only get one photographer on Friday night, and when we're fortunate, we get two if we steal an action shot from a sister newspaper. As far as Friday was concerned, I struggled with the Bishop Amat-Notre Dame and San Dimas-Baldwin Park games. I chose the Saints-Braves game because it was No. 2 against No. 3, for the league title, and two area teams, so I was guaranteed a winner on page one. If Bishop Amat had lost, we couldn't run a headline like "Crowning Achievements." Earlier in the year I took a shot with them against St. Bonny, and they won. It was great. It's always a tough call, but I went with the game that was going to guarantee a local winner, and besides, Bishop Amat has been on the front page every week since St. Bonny, and on the cover four out of eleven weeks....

SGV430,

Pretty much my take, as the Bearcats Offense didn't show up until the second half. You guys won the big battle of turnovers with + four. Our guys should know they won't win a game if the QB is on his back, your defense got pretty good penetration all night and no one picked up Coleman all night. These two teams might be fighting for fourth place right now, but I look at what Bonita has coming back and it should be a great one. However that four place team does get a playoff spot since it will be a seven team league. Your boys played great..Bonita has only won 2-4 in this series since it started in 03...you guys are always a trap game.

Last night they kept talking about how Bonita was going to the play-offs and Walnut was not on the Mid Valley Sports Show. Bonita in '05 at 8-2 missed the playoffs, in '06 at 7-3 missed the playoffs. But no one talked last year about how DR was 4-6, .500 in league and was going to the playoffs and somebody else couldn't go and blah blah blah.

I think Bonit will get a relatively good draw for the first round, but not taking care of business in the last game kind of sucks but oh well.

Division 1 and winning the title for Amat and I open my fish wrap to see BP/SD. The story you wrote and the players comments were all good but I was expecting a action picture with a statement accross that front page (Notre Done!) About Amat and what they acheived last nite. Hopefully we can get that next week as we take game one of the playoffs.

MONROVIA? LOL! said:

LOL!

Monrovia plays no one. What happened with San Marino? LOL! And Monrovia barely squeaked by Arcadia while St. Francis pounded them 40-0. Bishop Amat beat St. Bonaventure and SO Notre Dame not to mention taking it to Alemany. Monrovia is no where near this level of competition. They would get destroyed by this Lancer team.

On the other hand, a Bishop Amat vs. St. Francis game would be a better match up. But by analyzing common opponents, you have to give Amat the advantage once again.

CO defense is the real deal.. They get great penetration on running plays and play very oppurtunistic in the secondary.. Very, very impressive defense from top to bottom with strong athletes all over the field..

Offense got a confidence boost with the proficient passing display they put on behind sophomore quarterback Travis Santiago.. Muema will always get his, but at some point in the playoffs the Chargers will have to get big plays out of that passing game.. They may not need those until the Semifinals or later, but at some point, you've got to expect it will have an impact.. If the line continues to gives Santiago time, I see nobody beating this team, South Hills included..

On a Side note..........
BRUINS got a commitment from Corono RB Jordon James! Versatile, elusive running back.. Also, former No. 1 RB in the country, Darrelle Scott, has made it known he wants to come to UCLA from the University of Colorado.. Rumor is UCLA told him no.. I find it hard to believe the Bruins won't give him a shot when he was once the most sought after back in the country just two years ago.. They do have Oaks Christian Superstar Malcolm Jones also commited to UCLA though....

In any case, the Bruins went from beind devoid of runningback/playmaker talent to full of it...

RB's:
Jonathan Franklin/ Milton Knox/ Andre Dean
Jordon James/ Malcolm Jones

WR's:
Nelson Rosario/ Taylor Embree/ Terrence Austin
Morrel Pressley/ Randall Carrol
Where did Dominique Johnson go? He was so tall and surehanded at the WR position...

Tough time to be a Bruin fan right now, but you can definately see the light at the end of the tunnel.... I know its somewhere...

The only thing really standing in the way of the Monrovia Wildcats and that CIF trophy is the Fed-ex truck making the delivery. The Cats come to play Lights out football every friday night. So Much for the Brave hearts in their loss to San Dimas. I'm sure it was a hard fought battle between two good teams, but when you step up to the plate against a bruising team such as the Cat's in these playoffs you better bring your AAA game or you will be sitting in the bleachers eating hot dogs and cheering them on the next week. Congratulations to BA for showing! not telling other teams what can be done if you believe in your program. I would love to see a East #1 vs. a West #1 showdown next year in the preseason. I know every eastsider must think that I'm crazy for even wanting a match like this one but I think the outcome might just surprise you even the BA haters may go against the grain for my predicted outcome. If history has a way of repeating itself Monrovia/Bishop Amat would be a SGV highlight reel. I was on the 82 Monrovia squad that came into Amats house and spoiled their California state #1 ranking. "BISHOP AMAT BEATS NOTRE DAME"

Lancers clinch a share of the Serra League title with a 31-14 win.

Staff Reports

November 13, 2009 | 11:05 p.m

Students descended from their end zone bleachers and stormed the field Friday night at La Puente Bishop Amat High.

It was an evening that will be long remembered for the Lancers because they defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 31-14, to win a share of the Serra League title with the Knights. It was the Lancers' first league title since they won the Del Rey League in 2001.

Bishop Amat (9-1 overall, 2-1 league), ranked No. 14 in the Southland by The Times, will start the playoffs as the league's top entrant because it defeated No. 11 Notre Dame (8-2, 2-1), which will go as the league's second entrant.

"We're just happy to be in the playoffs," Lancers Coach Steve Hagerty said. "As of earlier tonight we weren't even sure we were going to be there."

Coin flips for playoff pecking order became unnecessary after Los Angeles Loyola upset Encino Crespi, 41-37, to force a tie between the Cubs and Celts for third place in league. Crespi could contend for an at-large playoff berth because it finished with a .500 record, unlike Loyola.

Junior tailback Jay Anderson rushed for 167 of his 206 yards and all three of his touchdowns in the second half as the Lancers transformed a 10-7 halftime lead into a blowout.

Lancers quarterback Jerry McClanahan upstaged his more ballyhooed counterpart, completing 18 of 28 passes for 271 yards and one touchdown with an interception.

Notre Dame quarterback Ryan Kasdorf completed 16 of 31 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown but failed to find any sustainable rhythm.

"I think the guys up front were pushing pretty good for him," Hagerty said.

"Guys just showed up and played tonight. I'm real happy for them."

Bishop Amat sacked Kasdorf four times in the second half and held tailback Kenneth Boggs to four yards in seven carries for the game.

Well Insider, I was at the Walnut-Bonita game. I will tell you this, Walnut beat the hell out of Bonita. This game was a total physical mismatch. Rhodes punished Bearcat defenders all night. Walnut pretty much did what they wanted to on offense. I think Bonita is still trying to catch the Walnut QB. The Bonita QB spent most of the night with Walnut defenders all around him. To me Bonita looked slow and small. To bad these 2 teams couldn't have traded leagues this year. Walnut wouldn't be turning their gear, they would be getting ready for the play-offs. For Bonita it's on to the play-offs next week. But it will be one and a barbeque.
Someone said something about these 2 teams fighting it out for third place in the new San Miratonio league next year. I'm looking at these teams fighting it out for 4th place at best. Wesco, Rowland, Dranch, to big, to fast, to strong.

AMAT WINS 31-14. And being a former AMAT football player, I have the upmost respect for Loyola. Saying that, THANK YOU for beating Crespi tonight! you did something we couldn't pull out last week. AMAT and Loyola have always had a Love/Hate relationship; and tonight, we love you.

Head-to-Head gives AMAT the #1 Serra League seed. I predict that AMAT will be either the #2 or #3 seed overall in playoffs (Edison has #1 locked). Either way, its going to be a rocking night at Kiefer next friday!!

How come you guys didn't target Aubrey Coleman a lot, he was a good sport tonight. Rhodes was unstoppable, geeze. Bearcats gave up too many plays...but our offense didn't show up until the second half and yeah. No one covered Coleman on defense and after three weeks of having a lot better O-line play they regressed. Good Job Walnut, Bonita will see you guys next year in League.

obviously, I'm not at the game tonight, but Walnut is up 17-0 at half. This is a good match up for Walnut because they might be fighting against Bonita next year for that final playoff spot.

More pressing though, I heard some rumors earlier this week of the players basically skipping out of practice. I was hoping to talk to some of the coaches or parents to see what they knew. Hopefully, someone will come in and clarify. If this is true, Walnut's football program is in worse shape than I thought.

You know, 73, I don’t really know anything about you as a person or even what you have done in your life outside of this blog, but please, what ever you do, don’t sit here and patronize me by telling me of all people, about how I should feel about a “hall of fame” that honors our nations war dead.

I have stood along side many of those very same names that you see in that hall over at Amat every day.

Oh, I may not have been right beside many of them when they fell, nor did I even know any one them by their first names, but I’ll tell you this, I knew everyone of them in a far different way than you could ever do in your life...

Just keep that in mind the next time you feel you need to talk about honor, pride and what it means to be a Lancer.

You can have the last word because, I’m no longer going to comment on this subject.

If it wasn't for the old timers and I mean the people before me , students as well as parents we would never have had the opportunity to partake in the traditions and history of AMAT and being a LANCER. As an old time Lancer I have to say that I couldn’t agree more with JCAZ. All you parents and old men in rocking chairs should read carefully what it is that JCAZ is saying in here if only because he is so right. Teams that are truly able walk with that "swagger" are those that have put in the daily effort and know that they are prepared. They realize that they have a tradition to uphold and have lived up to that standard each practice. They know they are ready to face any competition - because they face competition every day - against a teammate that is giving his best too!

That's the kind of "swagger" I like to see the Lancers walk with. Not the cocky swagger like you can't be beat, but the confident swagger that shows you are ready to give a great effort - because you know that your best is needed to defeat an opponent that *could* beat you if you don't. Those are the kind of games competitors love. Don't forget the games you lose - but remember they could happen and do something about it. That's why you choose to attend a school that faces the best high school football has to offer. Now it's time to go out and prove you deserve to be mentioned right along with them.

Los Altos Conquerors will live to see better days!,

You nailed it when you said that Los Altos had a good shot at beating CO. We completely shot down your defense and your offense. If it wasn't for that tipped pass in the last seconds CO frosh would have shut out the entire miramonte. So I guess the frosh will have to deal with their outscoring the league oppenents 152-6, instead of 152-0.

Good luck CO, conserve players for the playoffs. Our guys should be out by the 2nd half coach.

Believe it or not, it's not a matter of saying "oh I went to Amat around the same time that Moses went there, so because we hug out together, and because I’m an old timer, my poop don't stink like yours does"

Whaaaaa ???

I mean like, what in the world is that suppose to be about anyway ?? Come on dude, really ???

Anyway, moving on here….

Like I said earlier, for many of you folks who are lucky enough to get some seats right next to the cheer leaders this evening, please pay special and close attention to the words that are spoken just before the game this evening by them.

The pre-game prayer has a purpose and a meaning, otherwise there would be no point in saying these very words. First of all, it reinstates the fact that we are Christians and Catholics first, and that the game, no mater how important it may be, is just an afterthought at best. These words are perhaps one of the most inspirational words that you will ever hear spoken, before a football game and I invite you to listen to them very carefully, because in the end, these words truly do have a special meaning.

“….and if we should lose, we should hold our heads high….. and “cheer as the winners go by.”

It puts it all into perspective doesn’t it ?

You guys are too funny. Really...

Look, as I have said many times before, I am not a homer like a lot of the people are in this blog. I call it as I see it, and if it ticks some of you guys off, oh well, what can I say really ?

BTW, if the lancers go out and win tonight, then of course I’ll be at the next gae right ? But at the same time, if they should fall short this evening, then that would in no way, lessen all that they have accomplished so far this year.

The very fact that I have even mentioned the mere possibility that they may not get beyond tonight is as obvious as the zits on WERD UP’s nose. But what makes it even so much more funny, is the fact that many of these old men, take this as if it’s life or death to them.

Oh and BYW Spartan dad, thanks for the good words, but just between you and me, neither Joe, me or 73 will be suiting up this evening…..

Anyway, for some, I guess that my post was a “sad and doubtful one,” but I really, at this point, I need to ask…….where in the world did that one come from anyway ?

You know, maybe we shouldn’t allow old men in rocking chairs to blog after 10am if only because they might hurt themselves trying to get to the bathroom.

People, it’s just a game and I want all of you Lancers to remember this one very important part of it and it comes from the pre-game prayer that is said at the start of each and every game at Kiefer Stadium. You should all know it by know if only because it will be said once again before this game this evening and that is this awesome prayer...“and if we should lose, we should cheer as the winners walk by. Our lady queen of Victory, pray for us”

Sends chills up and down my spine ever time I hear it. Simply an awesome prayer !

"league championship"

Hey Numbnutz. Sorry to tell you, there is no League Championship for freshman, or jv. It's just a take off of the AYSO "everyone gets a feel good trophy" made up by the frosh/jv coaches who try to make themselves look important to the varsity staff. Both my sons won a "frosh League Title" at LA in the past four years. I still laugh at the thought of it today.

jcaz,
Save your sad and doubtful post for another blog. Our outlook for the future is very bright with upcoming and incoming students. The foundation has been laid so no worry. As freshmen go maybe those three losses will show them it is not enough to walk the walk (SWAGGER) but you also have to play the game everytime you step on the field. I would much prefer they learn those lessons as freshmen as opposed to later when it really counts on Varsity. As Lance R posted the mind set is much different now then in years past and we will beat ND . To me this team has proven they are a very good team and regardless of where and when it ends they have had a hell of a season and by my book it will continue. AMAT WILL SHINE.

I hate to say this but if you want to talk about future and potential look no further than Charter Oak. I saw them play versus our freshmen team yesterday for the league championship and seriously I thought we were good and had beaten South Hills freshmen convincingly among other teams but along came Charter Oak yesterday and they humbled us with a blowout win which could of been much worse too. Someone said they went undefeated. Regardless, if Bishop Amat's future is as good as your advertising sounds like that could be one more reason why these two titans need to clash in the preseason. Good luck tonight Bishop Amat and were going to try and do our best to play the spoiler versus Charter Oak. Sad that years ago our game meant something when L.A. and C.O. played each other. JV/ Frosh will rebound and turn into some mighty fine football players in the long run. Varsity will win tonite. Using words like Tragedy, Raw Deal, not be able to show how good we are??...What kind of Fan are you? How about "FN yes!" "we are playing for a piece of the Serra League championship" or even better We could be crowned Straight up Champs tonite With our win and a Crespi Loss. All the doubters came in here with their 2-8 0-10 1-9 Amat is re-building takes before our season started. To be here tonite in the situation we are in you could not ask for a better senario. Mighty Are The Men That Wear The Blue And Gold. The tide turns tonite. It is True ND has had our number for 3 years and have taken out a can of WOOP a-- on us, but remember 2 of those 3 were Verti years and it is tough to beat a team twice this being Hags second shot at Kevin Rooney and ND. Hags will find a way to win. Gains some confindance JCAZ before you even step on the Amat property tonite.

Jcaz - The future of AMAT most certainly remains bright. The way our JV team has turned it around only solidifies my position on the future of AMATS Football Program. The Freshman class remains a brightspot for the school (despite going 0-3 in league) there are still some VERY GOOD players on that squad. Mesh them with the recently found JV squad and returners from this years Varsity squad and I see a Damn Good Team for the years to come. The freshman squad was a victim of inexperience "all the way around". Not to worry though, my Lancer faith remains strong and "We live to play another day." Go Big Blue!

jcaz Author Profile Page said:

I went to the JV game yesterday at Kiefer and I have to sat that I was pleasantly surprised at just how much of a turnaround that team has made, especially when you consider the absolutely horrendous start that they had earlier this year.

BTW, what in the world happened to that Freshman team anyway ? These guys were the opposite of the JV’s at the beginning and I made it a point to go and watch as many of those games as possible even though they only played like 3 home games the entire year. Anyway, these guys they looked like world beaters out there, now however, I don’t even know if that team could even fight it’s way out of a paper bag.

Going o-3 in league just about destroyed their swagger, and it really put an end to all that talk about what a dominating team were going to have in the next few years.

Oh well, that’s life in the Sera league I guess.

Hey, one more thing. I tried to post something in here last night about the Sierra Vista Game. UNFORTUNATLEY, THERE WASN’T ONE!

I know because I went to it, and found an empty stadium. OUCH !!

So, I went to Citrus College instead, and watched the Tartans and the Bulldogs put on a very entertaining game. To bad one of these teams had to go home after the game last night, because they both played with their hearts on their sleeves. That game had so much meaning to both teams, and it kinda reminded me of the game being played tonight at Kiefer. I only hope that the results are a bit different tonight for the Lancers though.
