Girls Volleyball: It's over; state championship dreams end for Los Altos, Bonita

| | Comments (20) |

The dream of CIF State championship glory ended for the Los Altos and Bonita high school girls volleyball teams. The Conquerors, fresh off a CIF-Southern Section Division 3AA title on Saturday, lost in four games in the Southern California Regional Division III first round to Valley Center of San Diego. The Bearcats, meanwhile, lost in three games to Division 3A champ Mayfield.

Here's a quick recap:

Valley Center 3, Los Altos 1: The Conquerors, getting 14 kills from Meagan Macias and 11 from Jazmen Russell, couldn't hold off the Jaguars, losing 18-25, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17. The controlled the play in the first game, but melted under the service barrage of Valley Center, which forced to receive errors, which slowed Los Altos passing game. The Conquerors did hold leads in games 2 and 3, but couldn't stop the Jaguar machine. Valley Center, getting 15 kills from Megan Glennie and 11 from Stephanie Becvar, jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the fourth game and cruised to the match victory.
Los Altos coach Jaime Ornelas: "I'm proud of my girls. They played their (behinds) off. We have (CIF-SS) rings. We might not have state rings, but we have CIF rings. Our record is amazing. Our girls are amazing. I'm proud of them."

Mayfield 3, Bonita 0: The Bearcats battled the Cubs toe-to-toe, but eventually caved to Mayfield's consistency, losing 26-24, 29-27 and 25-18.
Bonita coach Adriana Contreras: "Emotionally we were drained. We could not get into a rhythm at all. We were on an emotional roller coaster. It was a tough (match) to play after having to prepare all week for the title game."

Well said GHigh and Robert... This is a small community where many of these girls are friends outside their school.

Basic-There is no cross town rivalry between Los Altos and St. Lucy's. It is one Dad from Los Altos that continues to blog against any team they have beat in the most disgraceful manner. He has shown no class, he has embarrassed parents/kids/school from Los Altos and everyone is happy his daughter is graduating. Nothing to do with the daughter, she is an amazing athlete and great kid. Unfortunately, a stage Dad who has had Wilson and Los Altos happy to be eventually rid of him.

However, the girls from Los Altos did a tremendous job in coming back after not winning league and then taking CIF. That is a huge accomplishment. And if that is the kind of team SL lost too, than no shame in that at all. Great job LA.

Next set of conversations will be who will be named on the all league teams. Many great athletes but definitely some focus on the top four teams South Hills, St. Lucy's, Los Altos and Bonita.

Good luck to our lady athletes in club, college and preparing for next year.

Tough loss for both teams. That has to be very difficult playing in such a contested match on Sat. and then having to come right back and play tough teams.
This time Div. 3A represented and are the lone Southern Section teams left in the playoffs. Does anyone know how the shuffling of leagues, and the success of LA, Bonita, and Mayfield, will alter the playoff divisions for next year? Will Upland Christian also move up.
Everyone have a great Thanksgiving and ladies get ready for college or next year!

Looks like the best in San gabriel valley is still the West side ...congrat to Mayfield and La Canada again...hopefully other san gabriel valley volleyball fans will come and support them in the 2nd round...especially those St Lucy, Bonita, and Los Altos fans since they generated the big talks of supporting each others from the SGV when they lose.

I really hope if there is only one team left after tonight hopefully Los Altos, other great volleyball fans will come to support us since we all live in the San Gabriel Valley, same LA County, and same good old USA!! God Bless good volleyball!!

Lady Bearcats,

I know Saturday hurt more than anything in the world. But band together and win tonight, whether it is ugly or pretty it does not matter. Get it done and it will take the sting out of things, however go all the way so you can play Los Altos again and beat them.

Anyone tailgating at the Rose Bowl parking lot before the Mayfield - Bonita game tonite???

Most Mayfield fans are going to eat at fancy restaurant before or after the game in Old Town Pasadena. Which restaurant in Old Town Pasadena is everyone considering tonight?? Wokano? Cheese cake factory? Barcelona?

BPS, Basic, OLE LA A-HOLE
Both teams played well on Saturday, had great seasons, were well coached, learned a lot about themselves and the game and deserve congratulations and praise from true volleyball fans. Please refrain from making this about you-because unless you are on one of the rosters, it's not. One team wins and one team loses....this is not U8 AYSO.....not everyone gets the same trophy. For the record, St. Lucy's was eliminated in the 2AA Quarterfinals and their players are free to support any team they wish. I'm sure the St Lucy's students have friends on almost every remaining team as this is a very close community.
Los Altos is at 15325 Los Robles Avenue near Turnbull Canyon (not an offramp) and the Pomona Freeway. Mayfield is at 500 Bellfontaine Street near the corner of California and Orange Grove
Go Bearcats and Go Conquerors......Round 4 would be very exciting.

The Mayfield game should be in their gym unless otherwise stated. Get their early because it is very small and only has bleachers on one side. I guess drive up to front gate and ask for directions. We had to park the bus outside the school and walk about a half a mile to play, and many fans park on the street as well.

BPS,

Advertising, really??? all lower case at the very end...really... I was actually asking a serious question as to why all the hate for SL from LA, I am relatively new to volleyball and don't really know either school so I was asking if there is a big issue or a good rivalry like SD and BONITA, that was all.

Now, can someone tell me where the h*** Mayfield plays? is it in their SWEET South Pas campus behind the gates at the top of the hill, if so how do I get in???

What does Club Volleyball have to do with anything between school rivals?

Another pathetic person trying to do advertisement on this blog... where is the school spirit? where is the agony of defeat?

Congrats to LA on their win.

Lady Bearcats you ladies are amazing and gave put in the hard work so now go out there and have fun use those emotions to play hard, play together and be sucessful. The Best of Luck to you Lady Bearcats, you already made us proud so don't worry about that, just have fun because you know what you can do....

BTW, it would be great to get a 4th round with the ladies of LA, it was a hard fought championship and game 4 was the big difference but what's up with the soccer cheer???

Mayfiled can we wear red too??? for the heartbreaker I mean.....

LA why are you hating on SL so much, I don't know the story so I am just curious. I mean I thought all 3 teams have girls that play at club west???

BEST OF LUCK LADY BEARCATS

Are you being a sore winner? It's awesome that Bonita girls volleyball has such a good following and has among the student body for a good while now.
Expect a lot of fans especially since there is no school for the Bonita Unified School District at all this week.

LA definitely got a better seed. We should be able to get to the So.Cal Final easily.

Mayfield fans please be careful Bonita might pack your gym with bandwagon hopper fans from St Lucy...it is funny how dedicated these fans are to their own school.

Mayfield got even better coaches, players, resources than we do in LA. It might be a de ja vu for Bonita again at the Cubs house.

Mayfield is too strong for Bonita. Bonita can finish their fine season at least in the San Gabriel Valley.

Los Altos has a better chance to reach to the SoCal Final next week and maybe State Final.

Mayfield fans it is time to see the if we are the best along the 210 fwy or the battle between West SGV or East SGV.

All fans should delay their Turkey vacations and stuff the Mayfield Gym in a sea of RED shirts!!!

Congrats to both teams for reaching the finals. Congrats to LA for bringing home the harware. Good luck in the state playoffs.

GHigh said:

Both teams have a good chance of going far. Obviously CIF officials think highly of them by seeding both teams. Good luck and try and play into December!

Very awesome for the Lady Bearcats, I know that loss to LA hurts, and it hurts bad. Use it as motivation to keep on going.
