Bishop Amat coach Steve Hagerty in studio with Steve Hartman and Rahshaun Haylock, who talk about the first round of the Pac-5 playoffs. Our man Steve Ramirez will cover Friday's game. We will set him up with a twitter account, and post his twitter page on the blog for quick updates.

Breaking News: Bishop Amat officials hoped to get Friday's game against Lakewood moved because of their traveling fans, but it was confirmed today that Friday's game will be at Lakewood at 7 p.m., and that 1,850 tickets have made been available to Amat, which can be purchased at Bishop Amat's athletic office on Tuesday from 8-Noon, and Wednesday from 8-noon and 1-4 p.m.

You speak of Hagerty as though he is some perfectly created infallible machine. He is after all Human, and to be human is to err. No one ever expected Hagerty to be perfect but then again, nor did anyone expect Hagerty to turn this team into a winner overnight. Everyone thought it would take 3-4 years or longer to restore the tradition...the winning ways....the glory back to Amat. Well guess what? Hagerty has proven beyond a shadow of doubt what he is capable of doing, and has turned a group of average kids into a cohesive, collective, well disciplined, dedicated, hard working and focused group into winners that pure talent alone cannot accomplish. He made the kids believe in themselves and instilled a strong bond of brotherhood between players, a strong work ethic and a never quit attitude.

Besides being a great coach, he is a great family man, all around person, teacher and community leader.

That my friend is a great total package and what great coaching is all about. We at Amat are indeed lucky and grateful to have this type of leadership on campus.

The reason we are having this discussion was because of the what if reason. What if he made a mistake that cost him those games ? Then would this discussion be different for you. Would this discussion take on a much different tone ? Of course it would. The fact is that he has made some brilliant plays but like you have stated, he is fallible and does make mistakes. However, because his team overcomes his misuses we are not talking about them as much but they are still out there. Also, discussing any coaches errors is a part of blogging. It has nothing to do with the man’s family, personally or anything outside of this discussion, but the mere fact that he is a public figure in the San Gabriel valley allows me to critique him in what I think is an objective way. I realize however that you may not agree with what I say or how I say it, but keep this very important thing in mind if Bishop Amt loses to Lakewood because of a coaching error, you can bet that you are going to see people saying far more harsh words than I have.

sgv coach said:

Again, I can only speak for myself but those of us that are in disagreement with the harsh comments about Hagerty are not being too sensitive. I agree this is an open forum and I agree that all coaches make mistakes (bad calls) and I agree that all players make mistakes and need to improve somewhere in their game, but I disagree that everything is subject to discussion. I disagree that you need to call people out at such a less than civil level. I also think that you are dissecting the game way too far. As you say, if we look at the film, Coach has gotten away with many mistakes. So, in my logic, why are discussing mistakes that had no effect on the outcome of the game?
My main point is that Coach Hagerty is a man that is doing such a great job. So much so that neither one of us here could possibly do! He is a great coach, a good man, a family man and very influential in the community. What purpose does it serve to call him names, other than to make you feel better?
One thing Coach has convincingly shown us this year is that team work is how to be successful. Amat wins because of their teamwork, and the support they get from the school community, the administration, the parents and boosters, and the surrounding San Gabriel valley community, all pulling together, believing in each other, both in good times and bad.
Basics of life 101, nobody's perfect, you can't always win, but you can always give your best! So, come on! Raise your game and enjoy the ride! Amat football is awesome to watch and experience!!!!!

Thanks for setting the record straight coaching 101. However, maybe your guys were right about the poor choice of words, but I have to ask the obvious question and that is why are you all so sensitive about this question? You guys take this thing so far beyond reality that no one can even give an alternate opinion or express a different point of view without getting slammed. Coach Hagerty made more than one mistake and got away with it. Not my opinion, just a fact, look at the film if you do not believe me ! So, if you are a family member of his, or if he signs your paychecks then I can totally understand your animosity to what I said earlier, but if your not, then, open your eyes and look at this objectively.

I actually think this is good for young athletes it should make them aware that there every move is being watched all the time. I guess we can only say its a bad call, conservative or over aggressive play if we loose according to y'all there's no critiquing when you win. Go Amat""""

No need to call coach Hags a BONEHEAD. He's 10-1!

sgv coach said:

I don't feel that I am being sensitive, and I don't feel that my "opinion" is bull crap and it is not even personal. Yes, Hagerty is a big boy, and I am quite impressed by the type of man he is. He doesn't need my help in any way shape or form. His body of work stands by itself. However, these high school athletes are just boys trying to develop into young men, and monday morning quarterbacking is not part of the game. It is part of the media. Putting in 16 hour days, giving up your weekends, having self discipline and self sacrifice are part of the game as well as having the courage to over come your fears and develop the weaknesses in your personality and skills. Monday morning quarterbacking is just gossip. By using the term bonehead, that is insinuating that he has no brains, and in "my opinion" it is unnecessary, and I don't feel that it was used in a manner to simply to say that Hagerty is human. But, some people feel it is necessary to express themselves this way. Well, don't take this personal or be overly sensitive to these comments because I am "just" giving my opinion.

All things considered...Bone head is harsh said:

So was it the word "bonehead" that upset every one? maybe if the blogger had written "poor" or "less than standard" every one would keep their pistols in their pockets.

Coaches make "bad" calls all the time. Gano made a "poor" decision going for two against Amat and lost by two scores rather than one...a huge difference when you think about it.

Has Hags made poor decisions? Depends......every "call" is a good call when it works....bone head decisions are more in line when teams call TO's they don't have r when a coach signals for a "spike" on 4th down...that's bone head! lol...but it does happen.

The biggest bone heads decisions coaches make , in my humble opinion, are at practice. That's where you separate the men from the boys....those who played or coached will tell you how on point that statement is.

call what i see said:

I just can't believe some of you. A person gives an opinion and you guys are so dam sensitive that you start your bull crap about how these coaches or kids for that matter, are being verbally abused. Give me a break.
I don't think this guy meant that hags was a bone head but that the call was in his (.OPINION) a bone head call, that's it. I also in my opinion think that he could have played it a little diferent, but doesn't mean I think he's a bad coach overall. Monday morning QB is and always has been part of the game. Hagerty is a big boy now and can take care of himself. You guy's need to Chill a little and quit turning opinions into your bull sheet thoughts. Hagerty has done a great job but just like everyone else he has made some BONE HEADS call. Doesn't make him a bad coach, but maybe just human. I will bet anyone that if you asked him, he would admit it as well .call what I see. ON BLUE!!

what a game and environment at keifer stadium last friday night. i thought both teams were extremely well prepared and showed why the pac-5 division can match any in the country from top to bottom. that offensive line was dominant in this game. it allowed mcclanahan to perform at a high level and connect with rio ruiz for big plays. jay anderson was also a man friday night, but that's certainly nothing new. i thought bishop amat did a great job on the great receiver from mater dei (blackwell). i'm not talking about the balls defended by johnson. i'm talking about sandoval (i think that's his name) #27 making tackles when he had to. that's what makes this team so special in my opinion. there are guys who have the athletic prowess to make plays, but everyone, even those you wouldn't expect to, make big plays. that is a huge credit to the coaching staff and its preparation as well as getting everyone in the program to buy into the "team" concept. as for some of the decisions hagerty has made. on the surface they might seem to be odd, but leaders are often times wired to be risk takers. i think hagerty has proven to be both a leader and a risk taker. anyone would have to agree that more times than not, he wins those gambles. with that being said, i understand some of his decisions that seem to be unsound in nature recognizing that this is what great leaders do. i can't wait to see what he has up his sleeve for lakewood. lakewood has more individual talent, but bishop amat is the better team. can't wait for friday. i will be there. i believe the bishop amat lancers will win this one. should be a great game.

Going to say this once and one time only, as I am NOT a regular poster.

Its as though I am reading posts from NOT all but a few that are acting like some 14 year old girls.

Lets get to the bottom line.

I played at AMAT in late 80's alongside Stephon Pace in the secondary. Our offensvie stud was Eric Bieniemy, our defensive stud was Chico Fraley. In fact I still keep in contact with Eric and his wife Mia, and their boys.

Amat was been the CLASS of the VALLEY from 1970-1995.
Fotball teams go in cycles, as to being so-so, good, bad, or great.

Who would have ever thought when I was playing that L.P, Workman, Gladstone among others would ever compete for league titles?

The majority of good teams have to have GREAT coaching. The kids have to first beleive, in the coaching or it will NEVER work. You can have good talent kid wise, but if the coaching continues to use his players wrong or makes bad calls over and over, it will show.

Let me also say that both Charter Oak, and South Hills have good coaching, and good teams, each year. This is why kids want to play for those schools. I mean 8 CIF titles between the two is proof enough to me.

Amat has been down, BUT never were they ever gone. It realized it needed very strong coaching, and alumni on its staff to get things and the kids beleiving again. AMAT has never been the biggest, fastest, or strongest team, but what they have is a VERY strong work ethic. This will make AMAT a power once again for years to come.

We should ALL be rooting/cheering for the WHOLE SGV to keep advancing. ALL the cedit goes to the I.E, or the O.C. We need to prove that AMAT, S.H, C.O, S.D, Azusa, W.C, D.R and Monrovia, can compete with the other area schools. A big win over Mater Dei helps, as does AMAT's schedule. However if you ever played OR even followed AMAT, unless we win CIF we didnt perform to our level we are used too.

Last thing is I keep reading how AMAT can beat any team soundly here in the valley. Probably true THIS year. But remember on any given day, just remember that!

ALL we want to do here in the Valley is survive and advance.
Heck AMAT wasn't even supposed to make CIF. Azuza lost a ton of kids, San Dimas, has a sophmore QB.
Amat lost to a good Crespi squad, C.O lost to a defending CIF champ, and S.H lost to a two time defending champ as well as a PAC 5 runner up. To me its the losses that make a team. Can you bounce back. For SH to be in Div 7 and step up to play a DIV 1, is impressive. AMAT, SH , and CO are clearly the best valley teams, and probalby will be 15 years from now. BUT because its CIF I want ALL remaining teams to play with heart, passion, and give 110% win or lose. Coach Parades always told us, "We hate to lose, BUT if we do lose and I know you left it on the field, and gave it 110% then I will take a loss, over a win, with no sportsmanship, or heart, or pasion.

GO SGV this weekend, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING to ALL!

The purpose of this blog is to give your opinion but to scrutinize individual players as if they were professionals and to call coaches boneheads just doesn't make sense. This statement coming from in defense of 101, "Coach Hagerty has made more than a few miscues however, because of his success, those mistakes have been largely swept under the rug." Let me repeat..."because of his success"...because of his success...because of his success...because of his SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amat does have a tuesday night film night of their most recent game. You should attend and ask him personally why he made those bonehead mistakes, questionable coaching decisions and miscues. Because of his success, he has obviously made a higher percentage of good decisions, has had many precise answers and has made on the mark adjustments to win at such a high rate for 22 years. Come on be reasonable...and just imagine the unbelievable job that he and his coaching staff are doing. He is a great leader and a great person. He deals with 15, 16 and 17 year old kids and has molded them into a tremendous team. He has changed the culture, not only at Amat but in the San Gabriel valley, and now all of southern California is noticing. Doesn't sound like a bonehead to me. That is a tremendously difficult job. So, difficult that nobody has been able to do it for some years now. Bonehead...come on! If you want perfection, then I guess look in the mirror, but maybe, his decisions are something that you need to deal with on a personal level, rather than him being a bonehead? Come on!

That what if game doesn’t work because just like Joe Amat said, you can always say what if. So, if your going to talk about some questionable coaching then you have to come up with some hard facts instead of the what if’s. So, let’s talk about some hard facts instead of the what if’s. Coach Hagerty has made more than a few miscues however, because of his success, those mistakes have been largely swept under the rug. Take for example that Saint Bonaventure game. Just before the first half was over, he made a bonehead decision, which allowed that team to score a last minute filed goal. That score could easily have cost his team that win. Also, in this last game, he should not have been in the situation where the opposing team had all that time left at the end of the game to run the plays which led to their final score. Bishop Amat had the ball prior to that series, and coach Hagerty should have ran the ball in order to eat up more clock. He did not do that, and in the end the opposing team was able to march down the first and score those points with the little time they had left.

one drive that left me scratching my head.

With about 6 mins in the 4th quarter, Amat is backed up to it's 10(?) yard line and instead of going to it's run package[to get some room from the goal line and keep the clock running]then proceeds to run 2 pass plays and 1 run.

This resulted in a 4th down, which forced Amat to punt from it's end zone. MD ends up with great field position and proceeds to score.

IF Amat had gained a few 1st down here, MD may have never gotten the ball back.

as far as bellicheat...it was the right call ( going for it )... but thrown to the wrong person,,,as soem believe...you don't keep reggie bush on teh sidelines and you don't put randy moss and wes welker hands

now as far as going for it, in my opinion, every coach needs to be himself when he coaches....too many coaches try and become some one new...bellicheat is what he is ... "smarter tahn everyone else"...so he went for on forth down

interesting that defensive player harrison and bruski both said teh call was bad because it didn't put enough faith in teh defense....I dont agree with them because teh "defense they're thinking about doesn't have "them" on teh field

so joey...answer this...why did he cheat? in all honesty I just can't get passed that...as a friend once said..."he knew it was wrong, he knew the rules...and he broke them"...end of story.

101,

I'll help you out a bit, since interpreting this stuff doesn't appear to be your strong suit.My Friend was comparing your 101 level of football expertise to Coach Hagerty's "doctorate" level of *football* knowledge. His comments had nothing to do with formal education.

An interesting fact that hasn't been talked about much on this blog is that Hagerty graduated from St. John’s Seminary with a major in Philosophy. How many HS football coaches follow that path? Could be an interesting discussion for another day.

As far as his achievements as a coach, in twenty two years of coaching varsity football as an assistant or head coach, sixteen teams have qualified for the playoffs, 12 won league titles, and five won CIF titles. In thirteen years as a Head Coach Steve Hagerty has a record of 95-65-3 with 6 league titles and a record of 19-5 in the CIF playoffs with three CIF titles on his coaching resume.... so far.

Not too shabby. And you know what they say, "if *if's & but's* were beer & peanuts we'd have a helluva party!"

IF the Ruiz/INT for a TD doesn't get called back, IF there's no holding call on Amat the previous punt MD doesn't start on Amat's 44yd line, IF they didn't invent the pass interefence call that gave MD the ball at the 12, IF , IF , IF! If my aunt had a package she'd be my uncle! If the Patriots gain two yards Bellicheck is a genius. I KNOW my friend will disagree with that one - but mathematically it was the right call... look it up.

You can't play the game backwards - it messes with the space-time continuum or something like that. What happened happened and Amat took care of business.

Now onto Lakewood.

Obviously being smart is great. So I'm sure Coach Haggerty's football IQ is very high. As far as education and successful coaches look at Mike Leach and what he's done with his spread offense, his QBs also have to be very smart as they call a plethora of signals once on the field.

So I'm very sure as Coach Haggerty has shown over the past two seasons and throughout his career that he makes great adjustments.

When will CBS air Coach Hags? Will it be on tv or online?

When the ball was in the air the MD player pushed himself off of RIO and J-Macs pass was perfect. No pi! TD! AMAT wins!

MD whiner-if you go back and look at the tape, MD made first contact when the ball was in the air-PI on MD. Rio was just tougher and pushed back-THEN made the game winning TD catch.28-21 Lancers. 91-15 All-time. 2-0 last two meetings. Lancers over the Butterflies.

I hope you are just a pimply little 13 year old kid MD rip off and not an adult with a pathetic life.

MD, PLEASE! You would have lost in OT anyway. How about the fact that they took a TD from Ruiz on a great interception? The better team won. But, you can come see us perform this week! AMAT WILL SHINE!

Ruiz pushed off on the last TD no call by the refs. MD was robbed.
