Game Story
By Fred J. Robledo, Staff Writer
Forget all that talk about wild-card scenarios and three-way coin flips, Bishop Amat took care of business the old-fashioned way -- on the field. It was almost surreal how easy it happened, with Bishop Amat coach Steve Hagerty shaking his head trying to come up with the right words, then giving up, glancing over at his players like a proud father. To continue, click thread

Through sheer force, the Lancers willed their way past the CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 Division's fourth-ranked Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, routing the Knights 31-14 in front of a packed house at Kiefer Stadium, and improving to a perfect 10-0 at home in the
two-years since Hagerty took over.

"I'll figure out how we did it later, I'm so proud that these guys could be in a game like this and experience this feeling," Hagerty said. "It wasn't about skill, it was about their will. Did we want it enough? Our kids have always responded to that stuff, and tonight you saw it all come together."

After entering the evening needing a victory to keep their playoff hopes in check, the Lancers (9-1, 2-1) ended up sharing the Serra League title with the Knights (8-2, 2-1) for the first time since joining the league in 2002. But because of their head-to-head victory
over the Knights and Crespi's 41-37 loss to Loyola, which drops the Celts (5-5, 1-2) to third, the Lancers will enter the Pac-5 playoffss as the league's top entry.

"We got a home game," Hagerty said. "I don't care who it is, but we like playing at our place."

Not bad for a team that was on the verge of not making the playoffs when the night started, and they did it against a team that had averaged over 50 points on them the past three years.

"I had a great feeling about this because we practice like we play," safety Davis Cazares said. "It's been a long time coming. We did what we set out to do tonight, it feels great to be part of the team that won a league championship."

In actuality, it wasn't even that close.

Lancers quarterback Jerry McClanahan threw for 277 yards and a touchdown, and junior running back Jay Anderson had the best game of his young career, rushing for 215 yards and three touchdowns, wearing the Knights down in the second half on six-and-seven yard methodical runs.

"That's what coach said to do, a little at a time, a little at a time," Anderson said. "He said if we take care of the small things, the rest will take care of itself."

Anderson's 10-yard run, and McClanahan's nine-yard pass to Rio Ruiz kept a big third-quarter drive going. It eventually set up Anderson's four-yard touchdown run, giving the Lancers a 17-7 lead with 8:19 left in the third.

After scoring on a seven-yard touchdown, Anderson put the game away for good with an 11-yard touchdown with 1:07 left, giving the Lancers a 31-7 lead.

Notre Dame quarterback Ryan Kasdorf threw for 221 yards and scored on a one-yard touchdown late, but the Lancers sacked him five times, and held running back Kenneth Boggs to just three yards and seven carries.

Even though McClanahan suffered four first-half sacks, he kept firing, throwing a 47-yard touchdown pass to Darien Johnson that was called back for holding. But two plays later, they went deep again, with McClanahan throwing a 45-yard touchdown to Rio Ruiz, who dove into the left corner of the endzone for a 10-0 lead with 4:19 left to the break.

It was almost a perfect 24 minutes for the Lancers until the Knights got back in it late, going 85 yards on seven plays. Knights quarterback Ryan Kasdorf threw a 40-yard pass over the middle to Patrick Dayao for a touchdown with 27 seconds left, giving the
Lancers just a 10-7 lead at half. It was the first time the Knights offense moved past midfield.

Soon Sparta,
Yeah I was suprised at the D.Ranch game last year too, once again the key to that game was three key starters went down to injury before the playoffs, these boys were instrumental
in the win over South Hills and with them the game is a lot closer, not saying we would have won but it would have been a much better game.
As for Ricky I haven't heard any news, he has had a problem with turf toe all thru the season and has struggled at times hopefully he can pull it together and have a great playoff season.
As for the Citrus game it was ex WC's Isaac Tucker who finally came back from his ankle injury and had some big plays including a nice sceen pass where he broke some tackles and weaved his way for a 33 yard TD. He also had a 35 yard gain two plays before that. Its ashame he missed 3 or 4 games cause they missed his physical run ability, I hate injuries.

Dan didn't mean to imply any disrespect. WC takes a back seat to no oe when it comes to stepping up...DR has that same pedigree...but here's my point.... that's the price you pay when you schedule and lose...now Bishop Amat probably has a bigger beef this year and look at what Hags "take" is..."bring them on!"

I was slammed for saying this last week but I still think WC and DR would do better served...especially in terms of the season...by scheduling Cathedral, Serra and Verbum Dei rather than Oaks Christian, Meter Dei and Venice...just my opinion.

I was at last years WC vs DR game and seeing as both teams follow the "step to the plate" philosophy I was surprised by the outcome...weren't you? How's the Ricky doing this year and is he getting a "ride" anywhere? Also seen in the paper how a former WC Bulldog Thurmond helped Citrus JC end their season on a winning note.

Good luck in the playoffs Dan...you're a great fan and always see things very honestly.

Soon Sparta,
I don't think Maggiore has it wrong, he was probably a bit frustrated and venting a little about the bone head way's of CIF and their ranking system, and he is right about their ranking system, their is a lot to be desired, just look at how they didn't even have WC ranked
or mentioned in others in the last ranking despite the fact WC beat the then ranked #1 & 2 teams in the division when they played them.
I think he understands the benifits of scheduling tough teams and most likely will continue to do so in the future.

Bishop Amat: Serra League Champs(CBS)

"The surprise Friday night was not that Bishop Amat won, but how they knocked off the defending Serra League champs, Notre Dame. Jay Anderson ran for a career high 215 yards and 3 TD, while Jerry McClanahan had arguably his best performance of the season, throwing for a career high 257 yards and a score.

As so eloquently called on our HS Rewind last Sunday by Eric Sondheimer of the LA Times, Amat was indeed victorious. The Lancers picked up yet another home victory, defeating Notre Dame 31-14 at Kiefer Stadium. I don't want to say La Puente's Lancers had their way with the Knights. Notre Dame was banged up entering Friday night's game. Most notably, leading receiver Tyler Thomas did not play and watched from the sidelines in street clothes. But Amat pretty much controlled the game from start to finish. The Lancers played tenacious D and the only points from the Knights offense came at the end of the first half via the two minute drill, and at the end of the second half. Amat was already up 31-7 when Ryan Kasdorf scored a rushing TD to make it 31-14.

Amat was extremely physical and ran to the ball. Kenny Boggs nor Kasdorf could get loose. The running lanes closed in a hurry.

La Puente's Lancers capture the Serra League crown tonight with the win. Thanks in part to Loyola's 41-37 win over Crespi. Amat and Notre Dame finish league play with 2-1 records and the Lancers get the league's top seed because of the head to head matchup. Both teams secure a PAC 5 playoff berth. Loyola finishes 3rd over Crespi because of the head to head tiebreaker. The win also gives Amat a chance of securing one of the top four seeds in the PAC 5 bracket. Its the first Serra League title for the Lancers since joining the league in 2002.

There was an Amat supporter in the crowd Friday night that said "We don't lose here." Actually, that has been the case recently. The Lancers extended their home winning streak to 11 games and have not lost a home game under 2nd year head coach Steve Hagerty. The last loss at Kiefer Stadium came November 2, 2007 to Notre Dame.

The playoffs begin next Friday, unless agreed upon by the competing schools. A home game for the Lancers could be in the works. The Chain Gang will be there, will you?"

Head Line,

In all fairness, Amat ends up being the topic of many threads that aren't Amat threads... usually because someone draws us in. Rebuttal is fair game and My Friend "Soon Sparta Soon..." came on to congratulate the Lancers. If knucklehead "no one asked you" didn't drive-by - the second post would have never happened.

The fact that this is a blog - means that Fred asked.. that's who. He asked all of us... that's how a blog thrives.

To all you bloggers, If your school isnt in the head line, DONT BLOG HERE! Go to the headline that has your school and ramble on there. This blog is about Amats incredible victory last night and them winning a league title. I dont want to hear about "soon sparta" and "mr scheiman". If your one of those haters who needs to be a punk, well... you are who you are and your gonna do what your gonna do. Hate on haters.
This is a story book season for Bishop Amat and no one can take that away. History has already been made.
9-1 WHAT??

Dear Mr. Scheiman said:

no one asked you..."never had that feeling huh?"

Last night instead of going to the BA game I went to see Wilson vs Diamond Ranch just to see what all the nonsense Mr. Schrieman was talking about. I know the man hates Gano but after seeing what Gano has been doing at Damien I had to see for myself...what's all the fuss..lol

First things first..Wilson played with heart...no doubt about that...and never quit. They have size, speed and talent and if I as to compare them to Los Altos who I also saw Diamond Ranch beat I'd say LA has a better sense of who they are....and Wilson is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the wall....In any case..both school drama is way out of line compared to the way the kids gave their all on the field.

I really wanted to see Mr. Scheiman kid...seeing all all the LA drama revolves around that one point...here's the deal.

Having seen and played against Ron Cuccia I can say he reminds me allot of him...gutsy, aware and scrappy...also small, thin and poor mechanics (yes I know Ron's a Qb Coach now but back in the day WR Stud Steve Martinez caught more poor throws for TDs than good ones...lol)... but he's young and can throw the deep ball deep and knows the game well...so he'll be something for sure.

# 5 is a class act. came up to Caoch Roddy after the game..shook hands and wished DR well in the playoffs...super kid....balls out player....honor to see him play.

Now the team...74 was a monster of a man but was just so raw...wish he was a Soph rather than a Sr but he's a load as were the WRs for Wilson...overall Wilson has a good team but...and there is always a but...let's say this...They are young and last year's Hoydation hurt this once proud program.

Heres my unsolicited advice to DRI, Wilson Parent or whatever else name Mr. Scheiman goes by now...LET IT GO AND MOVE ON...if it's about your kid...and I'm sure it is...bashing LA and Gano now that your son is getting "his" means what? Says what? Influences whom?

Ask yourself this...what would it take, in all seriousness, for you to be satisfied and made whole? I hope the question answers it for you. You seem to be headed for two more years of outstanding play by your son...enjoy the ride ... he's a tough kid and everyone is happy for you both. Hope that helps.

As randy and me have shown...its better to have a meeting of the minds than to stay angry all the time....lol...beside Mr. scheiman wouldn't it be something to come on here and declare once and for all..."It's Over!!"

Wilson and Los Altos players were tough, hard nosed and proud...they never gave up....so why cant the drama between the two schools end..seeing as you know each other oh so well....and will see each other in around town for years to come.

End of unsolicited advice. Peace!

The remarkable truth about Bishop Amat, as I have said for years, is they play on a level most will never understand. Last year they fielded a team with D1 athletes and still people made comments that in hindsight look petty. Sheldon Price endured most of the attacks yet he is starting for UCLA as a true Freshmen. This year SGV GURU laid it down..."Amat will be lucky to win 4 games"...as I said before..."the man is a fool and incompetent".

COCF and WC's Maggiore have it wrong...."play the best...and deal with the consequences"....that's the way LIFE will be, that's the way it will ALWAYS be....so you might as well start now. No football player worth his salt would not trade a Championship Ring for that feeling of accomplishment the Lancers had last night as they ran across their field to meet their classmates and parents..."yes! yes!! YES!!! WE DID IT!!!!"

werd up, anonymous and other "haters" will never understand what it means to extend yourself BEYOND yourself...it's just not in them. The fool is not the man that endures bombastic verbal attacks but the man who has to eat those words when all is said and done....that's the fool! Damien had their share and now looks who laughing...who's the fool now!

Joey...if ever there was a case for "I told you so!!!" it would be now...but that's never been my style. I remember when my son interviewed for Harvard a parent from Damien told me..."You must be very proud"...I told him...."Not really...I told my son this would happen when he was about 8 or 9 years old...so it's not really pride...I'm just hapy fr my son...I mean to "be" him...must be pretty cool...becaus ethat's "his accomplishment...not mine"...He looked at me and said..."Dude...don't you think you put allot of pressure on him?" and then he laughed nervously....I said..." No...not really...you see...my father fainted in school from not having enough to eat..so in the second grade he dropped out and went to work the streets...you know the kids you see in Tijuana selling Chicklets or shining shoes?...yeah ...that was my Dad." He said..."What does that have to do with your son?"

I thought about it for a while and said..."Everything." He looked confused.

Last night as the Lancers pushed towards victory..down by down...quarter by quarter...I'm sure parents in the stand felt what I felt as my son went to his Harvard interview...is it pride? In truth that feeling of knowing you put your kid in a place few will ever experience is indescribable .... but I "know" moments like that is what life is all about... and it's something that makes all the sacrifices seem so small.

I decided not to go to the game last night because I thought something special was about to happen...understand that and you will understand why I will never tolerate the junk they tried to pass off as coaches at Damien... Gano is our Leondas and we will soon take our place among the very best...anything less would be a dishonor to our commitment to our sons and them to us...it's a pact and not just a cute slogan to put on T-Shirts...."with my shield or on it"...is supposed to mean something...and that starts at the top. Seeing Coach Carroll on his car watching Gano and his staff "teach" the game makes me hopeful some day he will do the same for our last ailing program...our sons deserve the best and they are out there.

Best of luck the Lancers....Long Live The King!!!...until we meet again.

Soon Sparta soon....

Lancer Fans,
Congratulations to you guys the only thing to further cap what a story book season for you guys would have been a win at Crespi. I remember when everyone on the Blog said that Amat would win three or four games this year. The haters like Werd Up and anonymouse will still come out, I was even a detractor because all I heard was AMAT when I was back in High School...as some of you said it was hard to purge the AMAT NATION crowd.

However I listened to Joe Amat and I went to an Amat game to see what a game was like over at Kiefer when Bonita was on a bye. The fecal matter that I heard when I was in High School was nothing like I saw and felt around me when I took my Father and Godfather along when I saw St Bonaventure come in. Amat is a great program, great school, and great community. Glad to see you guys back on top, go and take the PAC-5 title.

jcaz,

Good response[taking the high road!].

Folks let's dial it down amongst us Lancers[fans, friends, alumni]. Bickering on a PUBLIC blog solves NOTHING and really makes the Amat fanbase appear in a LESS than shining light.

The person I am REALLY waiting to weigh in: Mr. SGV Scouting/'GURU'.

Before the season he LED the charge on how Amat was gonna be lucky to win THREE games. Can't wait to read the 'analysis' from this 'EXPERT'.

Lance R said:

Jcaz has found his way back on the Amat side. Lancers do not fight or turn on each other and we are definitley not doing it here because Jcaz is not a Lancer. He quickly ran to the ND side before the game with his golly geeze gosh I dont know we are not that good. Suprised? no not at all, this Lancer team is that good. I guess we maybe now have a believer in Jcaz but as soon as we are matched up against another big dog he will run to the other side looking to be right and say I told you so. Trust me when I say this, most people I came accross last nite before the game at their Tailgates all the way to Monsignor Zimmerman had that feeling that something was going to become special last nite and everyone felt victory was ours, no one had the what ifs? What we did not want was the win and a coin flip later. We won it outright and credit the players and coaching staff what a gameplan to start the first half and what a second half adjustment to just come out and take it right to them and never look back...Coach Difiori coached a excellent defensive game with blitzes coming when they had to (4 sacks) also shutting down their RB. Offense came out and ran the ball but they also threw the ball and Jerry Mac was on fire. Darian Johnson was in the end zone and that was touchdown on that supposed fumble? Nonetheless Amat is the Top seed of the Serra and to all the doubters including you Jacaz we are playing next week at home. Mighty Are The Men That Wear The Blue And Gold.!!!! On Blue!

Parents are perhaps the most amazing things on these bloggs if only because they so often live their life’s vicariously through their children.

Only problem is that some of them they never seem to grow up.

Sigh....

Anyway, it was indeed a truly amazing game last night. It was awesome that they not only won, but that they get to play a home game next week over at Kiefer, and not in some far way dark and dingy place.

And as I have been so often reminded lately, especially here these last few hours, Hags hasn't yet lost at home. A stunning accomplishment for sure.

How could anyone forget to give credit to Amat's Defense? They sacked Kasdorf 4 times and held Boggs to 4 yards on 7 carries? Our D literally shut down down their high powered offense who averages 40 points a game.

Wow what a game. Game of the Century! My neighbor brought and wore his Notre Dame sweater and said that Amat would never beat ND. Well wait till I see that SOB tomorrow. I'm gonna have a crow in my hands when I see him. Game ball should go to McClanahan and Jay Anderson who ran like a truck all night long, and the O line did a fantastic job opening up the lanes.

Also Jcaz, you can kiss my azz regarding your comments on our frosh team. They are still a group of winners, we lost 3 of our big Olineman due to injuries because they played their hearts out for the last 9 games. We had a couple of bad calls due to bad officiating and few questionable play calling by the coaches. But these kids, who are our future Lancers never quit and played their hearts out in each game, including our reserves who are 6-2. So apologize or I will kick your azz when I find out who you are.
