Sunday Tribbin: More Bracketology from the Guru, who looks at the Southeast and Mid-Valley

| | Comments (64) |

Anything and anyone you want to talk about

Guru Says: Folks, I've been doing this stuff for six years and I can't remember a year that is as much of a mess as this division as we go into week 10. To read his breakdown, click thread

Game of the week? there are three to choose from, you decide. Notre Dame at Bishop Amat, South Hills at Rowland, or San Dimas at Baldwin Park?

Who's No. 1: The question has to be answered now that Bishop Amat lost. Has Charter Oak been good enough lately to reclaim their top spot? Or is the Lancers' body of work just too strong?

Athletes of the week: Looking for nominations for boys and girls athletes of the week.

Thursday's games
Chino at Damien, 7 p.m.
Glendora vs. Ayala at Citrus College, 7 p.m.
Pomona at Ganesha, 7 p.m.
Firebaugh at Sierra Vista, 7 p.m.

Friday's games
Charter Oak at Los Altos 7 p.m.
Diamond Ranch vs. Wilson at Ganesha, 7 p.m.
El Monte at Mountain View, 7 p.m.
Rosemead at Gabrielino, 7 p.m.
South El Monte at Arroyo, 7 p.m.
Duarte at Bassett, 7 p.m.
Gladstone at La Puente, 7 p.m.
Workman vs. Azusa at Citrus College, 7 p.m.
Nogales at West Covina, 7 p.m.
South Hills at Rowland, 7 p.m.
Notre Dame at Bishop Amat, 7:30 p.m.
Diamond Bar at Chino Hills, 7 p.m.
Covina vs. Northview at CDF, 7 p.m.
San Dimas at Baldwin Park, 7 p.m.
Walnut at Bonita, 7 p.m.

Southeast Division --

This is what happened in the Top-10 Friday night
1. Charter Oak (Did Not Play)
2. South Hills (defeated Walnut)
3. Burbank (lost to Pasadena)
4. Crescenta Valley (lost to Burroughs)
5. Walnut (lost to South Hills)
6. Rowland (defeated Nogales)
7. Bell Gardens (lost to Alhambra)
8. Schurr (defeated San Gabriel)
9 Santa Fe (lost to California)
10. Burroughs/Burbank (defeated Crescenta Valley)

In case you are keeping track - that's five top-10 teams that lost last night. So the last poll, which is the one that the seeding committee will
use as a base of putting the brackets together, will be very interesting. This is what it might look like when it is released on Monday

1. Charter Oak
2 South Hills
3. Rowland
4 Schurr
5. Burroughs/Burbank
6. Burbank

I only go to six because the rest becomes meaningless. If you anticipate South Hills defeating Rowland (and Calpreps.com is projecting that to
happen) then this might be the seeding for the division

1. Charter Oak
2. South Hills
3. Schurr
4. Winner of the Burroughs vs. Burbank game

If that is the case, here is what the brackets might look like (remember, its not the traditional 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15...to see the formula the committee uses
download the playoff handbook at cifss.org)

Upper Bracket

(1) Charter Oak (Miramonte 1)
Winner of Muir/Pasadena game (Pacific 3)

San Gabriel (Almont 2)
West Covina (San Antonio 2)

Santa Fe (Del Rio 2)
Rowland (San Antonio 3)

(4) winner of burroughs vs. Burbank (Pacific 1)
Alhambra (Almont 3)

Lower Bracket

(3) Schurr (Almont 1)
Bonita (Miramonte 3)

California (Del Rio 2)
Crescenta Valley (Pacific 3)

Loser of Burroughs/Burbank (Pacific 2)
Diamond Ranch (Miramonte 2)

South Hills (San Antonio 1)
El Rancho (Del Rio 3)

This is a complete guess. We will update the bracket as soon as we get the poll on Monday...

Mid-Valley Division

Unlike the Southeast Division, things are a lot more calmer in this division. Rosemead won last night and has secured second place in the
league and South El Monte won last night and needs to win Friday to secure third place in the league.

Covina secured third place in the VVL win their win over Pomona last night. Workman has secured fourth place in the Montview with their
win over Sierra Vista last night. So here is what we are looking at going into week 10....

1) Monrovia
2) San Dimas
3) Azusa
4) Paraclete

Upper Bracket

(1) Monrovia (Rio Hondo 1)
South El Monte (Mission Valley 3)

winner of La Puente/Gladstone (Montview 2)
Baldwin Park (Valle Vista 2)

Arroyo (Mission Valley 1)
La Canada (Rio Hondo 3)

(4) Paraclete (olympic 1)
Gladstone (Montview 3)

Lower Bracket

(3) Azusa (Montview 1)
Covina (Valle Vista 3)

Rosemead (Mission Valley 2)
Village Christian (Olympic 3)

Valley Christian (Olympic 2)
Temple City (Rio Hondo 2)

(2) San Dimas (Valle Vista 1)
Workman (Montview 4)

The person I am REALLY waiting to weigh in: Mr. SGV Scouting/'GURU'.

Before the season he LED the charge on how Amat was gonna be 'lucky' to win THREE games. Can't wait to read the 'analysis' from the SO CALLED 'EXPERT'.

Or will we be 'treated' to the USUAL 'GURU' stonewall?

This program is a mess. The talk around the school is Coach A is gone, this move came way to late. The program is going to take years to recover from.

Now their is talk about a bunch of our freshmen kids in all sports are illegal. The parents talking about it are saying it is true. The coaches told the kids to us false addresses and now the school is being investigated.

Looks like we are going to have another mass exist this summer. My kid is one of them this program is going no where fast. I will tell you this much Wilson isn't an option, they coaching staff is weak at best.

"Cleaning up" is one thing...finding out why you're "dirty" in the first place is another journey into hell.

You bring up an interesting point...no matter how often athletes like LT mess up their is always some one ready to offer them more....money, fame, women, drugs, access and a handshake...always!

AMAT 73 Author Profile Page said:

My Friend Sparta,
That is really sad news on the original LT. My only question to you is would a real linebacker go on Dancing with the Stars. Now a wide receiver or running back ok but a linebacker. Maybe that was the cause for the relapse. All we can do for him is pray for recovery and that he sees the errors of his ways again and clean up.

My Pal Joey said:

I have to tell you Joey...Charlie Weiss is just incredible!!!

How do you "ascend" to that position without:

1) Ever playing the game!!!
2) Ever being a Head Coach!!!
3) Ever "recruited" in your life!!

I would like Notre Dame to go after the HC of Boise State or the HC of Stanford. Both have proven they can develop players, are innovative offensive minds and have proven they can win against better teams.

The other "COACH" I'd like to see there is Tony Dungy...if ever a coach and a school were a perfect match for each other it would be ND/Dungy.

First off he's a defensive minded coach...which ND hasn't had since Holtz and second he'd do well in all those "Catholic" (wink) homes where all the speed comes from.

Weiss should have been fired two years ago when he laid an egg from here to Kansas and still had that stupid look on his face of digust for his players which soon turned to whimpering mea culpas which turned into maybe he's turned it around false hope.

Notre Dame doesn't need a coach to draw Catholic school athletes...they need a coach to "WIN"...

Now wasn't Holtz something else? Still my all time favorite coach !!!

Joe Amat Author Profile Page said:

My Friend,

Mystique and "aura" wise you may be right. But considering where the programs *have been* (which is similar) along with *where they are now* (which was the question posed) the comparison isn't quite valid.

I think the Lancers are in much better relative shape than the Fighting Irish are - who can't beat a ranked team, lose to teams they shouldn't, and are headed in the opposite direction - or at least haven't progressed much since the Willingham era as they had hoped - and probably have cost Charlie his job.

Beat ND !!! said:

Amat 73 I'll finally get out there and see what all the tail gating is all about....I'll bring this up before you do...Lawrence Taylor got "busted" again....some people never understand.

But don't feel too smug...I hear Jack Lambert once pulled two newspapers out of the rack after only paying for one!!!! I bet you'll say it was a mistake and I have it on good authority that he's a chronic serial "jaywalker"!!!

See you at the game.

Better, I'm not so sure. I wouldn't be so quick to think that the Valley Vista is that much better than Azusa. But we'll see come playoff time.

Tough loss for the Men in Blue on Friday night. Crespi came out like a buzz saw and did what they had to do. Their backs were sort of against the wall and it was a must win for them. Congatulations to them on a well played game. As for AMAT hopefully we learned something from this and come out this Friday ready to play as our backs are somewhat to the wall now . I for one would hate to leave our playoff hopes in the hands of CIF or a coin flip. We can avoid that by chalking up a W on Friday. I was watchng the Loyola vs ND replay on Saturday and ND runs a heck of an offense. A lot of misdirection and fakes but it is nothing we can't handle if we bring our A game . As far all the posting on this weeks rankings well CO moves to number 1 with us at 2 . It's a no braniner we lost we move down whether they were idle or not. That is the way it works on this poll . The place to be this Friday will be Kiefer Stadium as it for all the marbles in the Serra and both teams will let it fly that night. Seen as most of all the other leagues are settled this would be the one AMAT game to see.

My Pal Joey said:

Joey I would put Bishop Amat closer to Notre Dame actually...and seeing as you guys have embraced the "PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY" slogan I do see a stronger resemblance.

Although I'm not a Weiss fan...hate cheaters and everyone aligned with the Patriots was and will always be a "cheat" in my mind.

Now Joey...I know what you're thinking...Weiss isn't Hags...but he could be Slater...who I believe you siad never played HS football yet was/is a successful coach much like Weiss.

Like ND..Amat has had mutiple HC who have won Championships in their "time" at the Lancer helm. Like ND ...Amat has had some poor hires and some "questionalble ones..is Verti Faust or Davies?

Like ND...Amat has had some legendary teams and some legendary players...and like ND...their are "freeway" Alumni who never attended Amat yet go to every game and have for years.

The question in my mind though is will Hags turn out to be the second coming of my favorite coach...Lou Holtz...time will tell. Remember Hotlz had a great staff, recruited well and scheduled and beat monsters on along on Redemption Road.

One other thing that makes Bishop Amat more like ND is you either love them or hate them...but either way you "talk" about them...lol

Just an opinion Joey from a Notre Dame (Holtz) Fan and a USC Trojan Parent who is proud when USC wins but dies everytime ND loses...kind of like what happens with Salesian and Damien.

Irony that Notre Dame High School stands in your way...or is it the other way around?

I hope the Lancers really put up a great fight and wins Friday...and secretly everyone else in the whole SGV is too.

I think the question below is interesting for those that like to make comparisons. I'm one of those that likes analogies and think they creat a mental image for people to better understand... so I'll take a crack at it. I've put my description of each program - yours may differ.

what Top Ten type school is BA most like?
(Thinking about this in terms of the context BA has been and is today)

1) USC -
Been to the top, had some bad years (Larry Smith) and returned to prominence under Petey. Would not classify as a program "on the rise". They're on top and fighting to stay there - so when they slip it's a shock. That's when you know you've arrived.
2) Oregon -
Good now, competitive for several years - but never to the "pinnacle"
3) Boise St -
little train that could. Can compete oon any single Saturday with anyone... but have never shown they can do it week after week. Not from a power conference to get National Respect on a regular basis
4) Alabama
5) Utah
See Boise St
6) Boise St.
Again? I'm gonna guess you meant TCU. Flash in the pan? No longevity.
7) Virginia Tech
Great run as one of the best,"Beamer ball" has great special teams(wait 'til you see their new Nike Uniforms this Sat - had a sneak peek)Another great program that hasn't won the whole thing
8) Alabama
I'm guessing one of these Alabamas is supposed to be Florida. On top and probably aren't going away anytime soon. Love Tebow and the Gators
9) Oklahoma
See USC
10 Cal
See Oregon

....or Michigan/Notre Dame?
(a couple years ago we were Michagan/Notre Dame - not any longer!)

If we had descriptions of the programs histories and present standings, I'd be more apt to embrace this as, but ... as much as it pains me, I think the best description might be....

.....Alabama

They are probably the program that I think Amat is most like - based on the descriptions above.

I'm not a big Alabama fan, tried to like Nick Saban and just can't (although he may be a heckuva football coach). But they have the tradition, standards, and expectations that are have won multiple championships, spent time in flux with some subpar years - but are on the rise with a coach that has achieved the pinnacle elsewhere, however the Crimson Tide has not made it all the way to the top ....yet

Now what you want to be is a Florida, Texas (who you didn't mention), or USC - where you're in the conversation every year, you don't rebuild you reload and you don't have to fill in for any shallow classes along the way.

We're not their yet.. but we're headed in that direction if we can keep it going.

Who is BA? said:

We were all talking about that yesterday. I believe that BP will go to #2 if you beat Dimas convincingly. If not, Azusa slides up the to the #2 and BP to #3. But in comparison, regardless of how much you win by (if it's in the cards) you're a bigger and stronger team than Aztecs in my opinion.

***************************************************
Mid-Valley Division

Unlike the Southeast Division, things are a lot more calmer in this division. Rosemead won last night and has secured second place in the
league and South El Monte won last night and needs to win Friday to secure third place in the league.
***************************************************

If Arroyo beats South El Monte (which most likely will happen) they will be 5-0, and since it looks like Rosemead will beat Gabrielino, Rosemead will be 4-1. That leaves South El Monte at 3-2, Gabrielino at 2-3.

Even if Gabrielino were to stun Rosemead and South El Monte still loses to Arroyo, we technically would have the same record, but wouldn't South El Monte's victory over Gabrielino be the tiebreaker (and the TRUMP CARD) rather than Gabrielino's strength of victory over Rosemead?

You’ve got to be kidding “seriously”, if Boise State (ranked #6) wins out then they ARE going to get into one of the BCS games this year and USC…they have a ZERO chance...that’s reality and not some what if scenario. Given the Senate anti-trust hearings over the summer led by Orrin Hatch (Senator from Utah), the NCAA is not going to hose Boise State…or else they’ll certainly face the wrath of the Senate and probably our President who has already spoken out against the system.

Damien, RC and Etiwanda are all playing pretty good football so you are dead wrong to characterize them as more weak opponents on CO’s cupcake schedule. Didn’t you notice that RC is currently ranked 15th…right behind Amat? And that “horrible” Los Osos...well this was a rivalry game and they beat RC by 3 points…and LO just beat Etiwanda last week and is currently ranked 74th in the State by MaxPreps…three spots above the Loyola team that had Amat in the cross hairs. Did I mention Amat’s encounter with Los Osos in 2007 and 2008…that would make them “Your Daddy Los Osos” or just “Mister Los Osos” if that’s easier to say. The top IE teams are very good teams that would easily handle the bottom half of the Pac-5 and might not win but they’d compete with the best teams so to bash them is pure ignorance.

Polls are silly and reflect past year’s success and won-loss records more than the present strength of one team vs. another so when you lose you drop. We’ve all seen the #1 vs. #2 teams in the BCS play each other and the loser gets dropped like 5 spots…doesn’t make sense but that’s the way it is. But, the bottom line is that from their body of work this season Amat should continue to be ranked as the #1 team in the SGV.

Just the Truth…when you start thinking that SH is better than everyone else than POW, it’s all over but for the crying…have you forgotten last year already?

Let's not waste our words on Charter Oak. No one can remember the last time time they faced any nationally ranked team. Their world is limited to the San Gabriel Valley and powerhouses like University and Gardena. With all their hype, they barely beat a severely injured Diamond Ranch squad. The funniest thing is that if they beat South Hills, COCupcakefan would consider that victory as good as beating Los Alamitos or Fountain Valley. LMFAO!

23. Westlake 9-0 (23)

24. Charter Oak 8-1 (24)

25. Venice 8-1 (25)

Moving in: Nobody.

Moving out: Nobody.

Moving up: We had to do it. Edison has played the toughest schedule of anyone in Southern California and Oaks Christian's schedule is looking shakier by the moment. So we flip-flopped the Chargers and Lions. And if Edison wins out, it will probably overtake Crenshaw for the top spot (provided the Cougars don't receive an invitation to the open division bowl game and win that game). We also had to switch one-loss Servite and Lakewood using similar logic; the Friars have thrived while playing a difficult schedule and the Lancers have defeated nobody of note (sorry, Long Beach Poly doesn't count in 2009). When it comes to Mission Viejo and Gardena Serra, you just have to wonder if the small-school Cavaliers are really better than the Pac-5 Diablos. Should Serra beat Oaks Christian, there might not be any doubt. Until then, there's plenty. Norco got a three-spot bump for its big victory over Corona Centennial and St. Bonaventure, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and Valencia all moved up in the wake of Bishop Amat's loss to Crespi.

Moving down: See above for Oaks Christian, Lakewood and Gardena Serra. We didn't want to penalize Bishop Amat too harshly for a loss to a Crespi team that is very solid (despite not being ranked). Corona Centennial could have won both games it lost, so we're not going to bump the Huskies out of the rankings. And just chalk up Fountain Valley's 24-0 loss to Edison to running into a hot team at the wrong time (rivalry week).

On the doorstep: Crespi, St. Francis, Orange Lutheran, Mater Dei, Redlands.

Games of the week: Moorpark at Westlake Village, Dana Hills at Mission Viejo, Redlands East Valley at Redlands, L.A. Cathedral at Gardena Serra, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame at Bishop Amat, San Pedro at Carson.

Badddd argument partner. Why do you think so many folks are opposed to the college football "playoff" system. In fact, college football is the only college sport that uses that system. Every other college sport has a true playoff system in place. Moreover, I can't even think of a sport that has a system in place like college football. Even the experts that like the college system will tell you that the best teams at the end of the season don't always play each other.

The score was BA 41, DR 7 at the start of the 4th quarter. The last DR TD was scored off of BA's reserves. Without it, BA would have beat DR by the same margin as FIVE other teams combined.

Since you want to talk about college polls so much and make the comparison that makes you the TCU, Cincinnati, Boise St of the valley - nice record, but who have you played - so you stay ranked behind the guys that play real football in a real league like Florida, Alabama, and Texas. And 1 loss Utah is ranked behind 2 loss teams like USC, LSU, Ohio St, Oregon, and even Miami - because they play in a REAL conference and have a REAL schedule. USC with 2 losses has a better chance of going to a BCS game than any 2 of those little unbeaten schools.
CO baby - Keep playin' your bitty ball - you haven't proven that you belong with the big boys. Or even tried - and that's worse!

seriously. Spoken like a Amat fan. In college football if you are number one and you lose you drop. It's as simple as that. If Florida loses to Alabama or an underwater basketweaving team they drop. Doesn't matter who you lose to you drop and that is why CO should be number one as we haven't lost since the Rancho game. Amat will drop anyway after next week when Notre Dame schools you.

The only #1 spot in the polls that means anything, is the very last one of the year.

CO baby - unless there is such a gap between you and the team below you that it's not even funny. It also depends on who you lose to.
We've seen Rancho - we've played Rancho - and Rancho is NO Crespi or Notre Dame - that's for sure.
It's clear that Amat could lose out and they've still proven they're the best team in the valley - hands down.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FAN - Notre Dame, Crespi, Loyola, Alemany, St Paul, St Bonaventure, Damien, West Covina, Dominguez - and you. When you're the worst team on that list - you probably shouldn't be calling anyone out! HOW'S THAT?

Amat drops. You lose you drop just like the college polls. CO is number one.

Diamond Ranch has 3 wins over Muir, Bonita, and Los Altos, who are each 3-6! And now you thumping your chest? What a joke! Muir's wins are over opponents with a combined 3 wins. Bonita has only beaten Los Altos and Wilson - combined 5 wins and Division ELEVEN Baldwin Park. And Los Altos wins are over opponents with a combined 6 wins. Diamond Ranch has only beaten poor teams. Beat someone good - then pop off!

Aaron said:

If this ends up being the Bracket, Bonita gets a really good draw with the Almont 1. However DR Fans, you received a bad draw to have play against either Burbank or Burroughs.

Cresp>Rancho Cucamonga. As is ND, Loyola, Alemany, St Bonaventure - and at this point in the season -maybe even Damien.
All are>Tesoro and probably La Habra. Makes it pretty simple

One other thing to keep in mind, their is a three-way tie for second place in the Del Rio League Standings between La Serna, Santa Fe and El Rancho.

If all three teams win on Friday night, that means a coin flip will have to take place for the second and third place teams. That means that their could a chance that Santa Fe may not make the playoffs....wow!

boomer said:

you can't drop amat from the #1 spot in the valley. There is no way any other team in this valley could go 8-0 against the teams on their schedule, and crespi would of handled any other team too. amat stays at #1

CO-PLAYERS OF THE WEEK said:

I nominate the referee and side judge in the Crespi/Amat game. Did'nt want to post this, just want to know if anyone else saw this? To me this was as obvious as Tim D. in the NBA. Several moumentum stopping phanthom flags, several other things witnessed in pre-game and earlier that I won't get in to. Hope it was worth it, you may have altered history!
I would love to hear Steve's thought's on this, if possible.
