Playoff Bound: Welcome to the party Glendora, the Tartans join Red Hot Damien with a piece of the Sierra League title, coin flips next?

Thursday's results
Damien 55, Chino 0 -- After a 1-5 start, the Spartans rally to earn a piece of the Sierra League title in coach Greg Gano's rookie season, and they did it in convincing fashion, blowing out Diamond Bar and Chino to build up a head of steam entering the playoffs.
Glendora 34, Ayala 20 -- Glendorable right, the Tartans win when they absolutely have to win, earning a piece of the Sierra along with a playoff berth. With Chino Hills likely beating Diamond Bar tomorrow night, there will be a three-way tie, with coin flips deciding the order of finish for the Central Division playoffs. If the Hills lose, then Damien gets the No. 1 entry because it beat Glendora.
Los Alamitos 31, Fountain Valley 22 -- With Los Alamitos (8-2, 3-2) winning, they join Fountain Valley (8-2, 3-2) in a tie for second behind Edison (9-0, 4-0), the Sunset League champion. While it's not the best result for Bishop Amat, it won't matter if Esperanza (4-5, 1-3) defeats Newport Harbor (5-4, 2-2) on Friday, thus pushing Newport Harbor into sole possession of fourth with a 5-5 overall record, helping the Lancers' at-large chances. If Newport Harbor wins, then panic sets in, because there would be a three-way tie for second, with coin flips deciding the order of finish, leaving the Lancers with the possibility of fighting for the wild card spot with Los Alamitos or Fountain Valley, who would both have the same records if the Lancers lose to Notre Dame.

Sanity please,
You are a good statistician. Good for you! Still, we at Damien are proud of our team & Sainz.
I agree with "now that's me", this coaching staff is better qualified to take Damien beyond where we have been recently. Some of the people defending Morrison aren't even Damien fans. Morrison is a good position coach, but made alot of questionable decisions when he was at Damien. I have always felt that he could of built a better staff around him. Gano understands that, & that is why he has a chance to do special things. Even if you don't like Gano as a head coach, you got to like the staff he put together. As a Damien Parent, I have watched every game this year, & cannot remember questioning his
decisions on the field. We had to horrible games against Chino Hills & SJB. No excuses, we played bad and got are butt's kicked.
Hey Damien Fans, congratulations on a great season, you are definitely much improved and if you know anything about football and have seen them play for the past several years, you have to give credit where credit is due, and that is to their coaching staff. But let's all calm down a little bit, and stop making ridiculous statements like Sainz is the best back in the valley. I appreciate you're excitement Damien Fans and you should be proud of the kid as he has had a solid season. But, let's keep it real. Sainz is not the best back in the Valley or even in his own league. One good season doesn't qualify you for this honor. You have to look at the body of work of a player before you heap such lofty praise. The best back in the valley is Muema, just look at the numbers. He averages more yards per carry with fewer carries per game than Sainz. He has TD runs of 69, 69, and 44, 2 receiving TD's of 65 and 37. Sainz long for the season was 36 yards before the Chino game. Muema has a CIF championship and is all SGV. In the Sierra league, Holmes has consistently been the best performing back of the two. Holmes, who was injured after the second possession of the Damien game, plays in an offense that does not feature the run first, and he has averaged less that 15 carries a game for his career but over 100 yards a game. He has had TD runs of 54, 40, and 46, and a monster game of 265 yds against Diamond Bar. Sainz averages 20 carries a game. Anytime the Holmes kid touches the ball over 20 times in a game he averages over 190 yards. Check the numbers cause they don't lie. Holmes has had monster playoff games of 175, and 260 yds. in his career. I could go on and on but I think I've made my point. Sainz has had a good season, but the top backs in the area have had great careers. Give Sainz and Damien their props, but let's keep it real.
another damien dad....oh to be you...a hypocrite with nothing better to do than pretend you know more football than Gano, Merrill, Fair, Garrison, Howling ect....men who have a history longer than your arm of winning Championships and producing next level athletes.
maybe you missed the tribune's picture with Gano's 4 Championship rings...or the game where Damien actually showed up to play against Amat rather than do a morrison "lay down"... did you hear ...Amat is Serra League Champs as well as being 9-1 !!! And we played them TOUGH!!!
stop before you embarass yourself..what's the matter now....the new coaches don't go for the "lips firmly planted on the ass" routine....go figure.
talk to me at practice and tell me all about your wealth of football knowledge....notice I never make "suggestions" anymore? stand back and look at a practice and tell me things haven't improved...ACROSS TEH BOARD.
here's a secret test to refute your stupidity...ready...might make your Kissass head explode...
NO ONE...AND I MEAN ...NO ONE!!!! ...WILL SAY GANO WON THIS CHAMPIONSHIP WITH MORRISON'S PLAYERS....why is that?
LMAO...you're a joke...is Sainz a Morrison player? hardly;;;Sainz is a Gano product thru and thru and the reason Sainz will make All CIF...you heard it here first...as will Soph phenom...Alex Arevalo..imagine that!
let's review...wait...why...we have the playoffs to think about....lol
Or, you said baby wally is celebrating a serra championship? WHY? He didnt do anything. The only reason he is over there is because he didnt know how to be a team player. He got his ego hurt and left. Thats a fact Jack ! I mean dORk
OR Said
He had ZERO to do with the titles from either school.
Maybe he should get the cancer cells fixed.
just saying:
Both coaches are at .500. Gano hasn't done anything different(yet) from Morrison. GET IT! Read slowly...comprehend before you blog! You sound like FC.
he's celebrating a serra league championship AND NOT READING THIS CANCER OF A BLOG
Big Time,
I bet baby Wally wishes he keep his mouth shut and behaved like a good little boy now. But, your right Glendora didn't miss him at all !
Now did glendora really need baby Wallace
another damien dad,
I wasn't commenting on the second part of your post. My post was regarding your comment about Gano you said ".he hasn't done any better than Morrison did. Morrison won two league championships, remember? "
The job he has done and the mess that Morrison made are not even combarabe. As i pointed out in my previous post. I said it once and im going to say it again think before you speak
Dave Lopez ...
Did you mean DEAF ?
Death is when you are no longer LIVING !
I know we have some dopes on here but COME ON NOW ....DEATH ?
Fight On
TM
just saying,
Read my post again. Then comprehend and think before you post.

You should remember that school. Major ass whippin!!!!
another damien dad,
remember morrison's first league championship wasn't even really his, that was Pasquarella's team which he took over. That team was loaded with likes of Ian Johnson and others. That team was huge and talented and should of made it deep run into the playoffs. But they didn't and they were out in the second round. The following season which was 04-05 he went 1-9. Then the 05-06 season his record was 6-5 and and once again they were one and done in the playoffs. I remember watching that team they were huge and talented but yet again coaching faliled them. Anyone that has watched Damien football over the years would have to say that was ONE of the biggest and talented class in Damien history.(keyword ONE) The following season which was the 06-07 season was his second league championship who went 8-2. Once again this class was loaded with likes Mark Mendrun and Travis Eschardies and many others. All he was able to do with talent was lead to the second round where they got smoked by Temescal Canyon. Once again coaching failed them. The following season which was the 07-08 season. Once again this was a very talented team with the likes of John Rabe (Nevada), Ryan McMahon(USC), and Danny Pertusati (MLB Single A). They were poised to repeat as league championship but once again coaching failed them and and ended up as the third place team in league with a record 5-5-1 and also were one and done in the playoffs. The 08-09 team was not as talented as Morrison's past teams, but they did have some talent such as Jake Salter( Sac State) and Taylor Herrera (SLO). He lead that team to once again a dissaponiting season and didn't even make the make the playoffs.
Yeah, sure Morrison has two league championships but when you had has much talent has he had you are expected to win league titles which he did 2 out of the 5 seasons, and your expected to make a deep run in the playoffs which he DID NOT!
The job that Morrison did and the job that Gano is doing right know is like comparing Toyota to a Mercedes, they are night and day.
Gano is a great coach who know how to utilize the talent which he is given. Gano would be having a blast right know if he had the type talent that Morrison had when he was a coach.
another Damien Dad, think before you speak
dave lopez
You should remember that school. Major ass whippin!!!!
hey retard it was st john boscoe. don bosco plays the school of the death and blind
Damien 55, Chino 0
Karma will catch up with "Golden Child" Damien in the playoffs". Remember Don Bosco!!!
its gotta be the shrooms.
SPARTANDAD#2 maybe you proved "honestly's" point considering the second and third stringers beat Chino 21-0 on the ground using Gano's system.
Talk about Getto, after all the kids were split up at the DRanch/Wilson JV fight the Wilson kids went to the locker room. The DRanch kids starting fighting with each other, it was comical. I have to say I have never seen a coaching staff as bad as DRanch, these guys keep adding fuel to the fire. I guess like they say the players are a reflection of their coaches.
As far as Damien goes, Gano's got a D Coordinator. Gano usually calls the offense and that is going to be Damien's down fall.
DAMIENDAD#2
Slow down a bit there pardner. Before declaring Gano as the second coming, realize that he hasn't done any better than Morrison did. Morrison won two league championships, remember? Personally, I like that Gano is more of a ground game guy than Morrison was but I also think that his running game is unimaginative and non existent in the red zone. Where the team is better is in the defense. The previous guy didn't understand defense. THAT was our Achilles heel.
Freddy J-
You are going to let us knows when then coin hits the floor (or hand) this morning at Damien aren't you?
Honestly,
You are such a hater. Did you ever think that maybe this kid improved along with Gano being the coach. Since you brought up Holmes let's go there. The only good game he had this year was against Diamond Bar. See the problem with dumbasses like you is you always flip the script when it works for you. You talk about last year because Sainz is playing well this year. The reason your not talking about this year is some of those backs are not doing as good as last year.See you are blinded by your pride "Honestly". I am a Gano supporter who realizes he still needs players to win games. Our offensive line is good but not dominate. If you think Gano's scheme is the whole reason for Sainz success then you obviously haven't watched him play much this year.Keep on hatin' "Honestly" it becomes you. I realize we have beat some lesser teams lately, but we are playoff bound & many people said we wouldn't get there. As far as the comment about Damien running up the score, the backups played the whole second half & scored three TD's, all on the ground. Same thing last week "Gano's a Joke". I don't make excuses on this blog, but there are alot of grown men acting like there daughters. Keep
living in the past haters, "Sparta Lives" for the future. Whether we win a playoff game or not this year, we took a major step as a program in the right direction.
Gano Gano Mork out. That was for you JCAZ. Good luck to our Catholic Brothers from AMAT.
Go shine tonight Boys!!!
Damien outscores last four opponents 143-10, what a great way to finish up league. Damien is peaking at the right time and hitting on all cylinders going into the playoffs.

D Ranch needed to win out like last year - thus cheap shots and fights with lesser opponents helped to secure that - problem is - it will not work against good playoff teams - which they will find out soon
gano's joke...were you at the damien game? I was ...the back up kids that haven't played much all year played the entire 2nd half....what do u suggest they play half ass when they finally have their chance....we didn't run up the score....u might know gano...but u don't know the damien players hearts.....so pipe down....any decent coach knows u aren't running up the score with ur 2nd and 3rd string kids in the line up....
Glendora 34 - Ayala 20. On to the second season!
Any beats on how many Wildcats that cheap shot DRanch is going to take out tomorrow. Lets do an over under. Will go with LA's 2 as a base, I am taking the over.
Or how many fights, that is going to be real interesting. DRanch is going to the playoffs, can't afford to get a key player kicked out. Wilson's seniors have zero to lose, could be a real interesting game.
Stay tune, NEWS AT 11 ............
Damien fans I bet your so proud to beat up lil o Chino, wow, you ran the score up to 55 and now your on top of the world.
Fred Los Al won tonight, confirmed via LA Times.
is the new THUG U of the Miramonte.
Good luck tonight Glendora, and you always seem to play good at Citrus College! Hope you get the (W)!
From your neighbors, AZUSA AZTECS!
For the 3rd week in a row a D Ranch football team has a huge fight on the field - this one started during the after game handshakes with Wilson JV - it was a tie game 22-22 and 2 Dranch players started F----- wording to the Wilson assistant coach at midfield - during the handshaking no less - that started a 3 minute push and shove at midfield which took quick action by Wilson admin and even their teachers to get between the two teams - the D Ranch coaches didn't help the situation with their cursing and yelling at Wilson coaches
- what's with the D Ranch program - even the paper mentioned their fight last week with L Altos
- can we expect another fight tomorrow at Ganesha for the varsity game??
I know I must have broken some unwritten rule about posting only, snide, rude, juvenile comments about coaches on these boards. I sincerely apologize if anyone was offended by my giving Gano and his staff some recognition.
Won't be voting for him for president though...I gotta vote for Hilary...lol...or Fred...
Last year Sainz ran for 19 yards on 7 carries against Rancho Cucamonga on his was to 435 yards for the season. Followed that up with 90 against SJB in another blowout game defeat for the partans. 76 yards against an under manned Claremont team in the team's first win. 65 yards against Bishop Amat's D1 defense in a game that was over by halftime and 25 yards against CO's tough defensive line. In league he gained 49 against CHHS in a must win game. 25yards against Glendora in a major rivalry game and followed that up with 34 yards against a tough Ayala squad. Sainz did bust out for 148 yards against Diamond Bar and ended his season with 34 against Chino....hardy numbers to compare with Gilmore, Barbone, Joseph, Gaise, Ricky Johnson, Spirlin, Holmes or anyone else of note from last year....so why is he tripling his output this year after averaging 430 yards a season for two years- simple Gano!
Gano has built a running attack that creates confusion and gives rbs lanes to run thru. Great backs make people miss and get yards after first contact which all the aforementioned tailback accomplish with regularity.
Enjoy the season but please don't confuse the system with the player, granted he's fast but great...no.
running wild, just stop!
There are two Spartan Dads on here so I will say that I am #2. I don't know who the best back in the valley is, or the criteria you bloggers use. I have seen alot of the best backs this year, including Jay, DJ,& Muema. Sainz had good games against all of those guys head to head. If your looking at D1 size as part of your criteria, than Jay & Adam would be your pick. But make no mistake about it, Phillip Sainz is a back that has great vision, toughness, & heart to match any of these backs. If you have watched those backs all play, you would know that DJ & Sainz are faster than Muema for sure. Jay is the most complete back with size and speed. As a Spartan fan, we have watched him break off runs against Amat, Rancho, CO, SJB all quality teams. Amat is the only team in SGV the that has played a tougher schedule. It does not matter what people like "unreal" think, he has put up #'s on all of the tough teams. The kid can fly though, his footspeed is comparable to anybody's. I have seen Jay & DJ multiple times and I think they are both better than Muema. DJ has that home run quality that is just scary. I think Muema is a great back, but to think he is way better than Sainz is just dumb. He is bigger, but that's the only thing he has on Sainz. Alot of backs put up big #'s on lesser opponents, but Jay, Sainz, & DJ, have done it against better teams. After Rancho & Damien, who did you guys play.
Runningwild,
If Sainz is the best in the valley in your eyes then you need to make an appointment with your optometrist ASAP. He's good but Muema is a monster he's definitely the best RB in the Valley. Jay Anderson is a special player, too. Take the green and gold sunglasses off... They're killing your judgement. Still a good player just not the best RB.
This is Conq 76:
I will now be the official campaign manager for Gano's run to be the next President of the USA
Congratulations Coach Gano along with your superb staff. I know for a fact you would be the first to acknowledge you did not do it on your own. Apart from your juvenile detractors on these boards, you realize the importance of getting the right people in the right place and empowering them. Coaches who believe they must be the Lone Ranger and seek all the credit are missing a vital part of the success puzzle, thank goodness you have found it.
Good luck in CIF!

Sarcastic? What are you talking about, this kid is the real deal and fun to watch. In what way did you understand that I am mocking him? Are you an Amat grad? This kid is a stud and has been carrying his team, putting up huge numbers against a monsterous schedule. Drinking during the day is a sign of alcoholism buddy, go get checked.
runningwild hey idiot stop being sarcastic sainz is doing the best he can and for you to mock him is low.
Excited for Damien to end on a good note. In my eyes the best RB in the valley Philip Sainz will run wild and continue his stellar season into the playoffs. Guillen is throwing well and the defense is finally playing like madmen out of hell, let's go boys.
Spartans,
Play hard and let's show them what Damien football is all about, great job on all levels and way to finish strong. Our freshmen ended the year with some great wins, our JV is looking strong and taking it to everyone, Varsity is dialed in. The program is looking good and has all of us looking forward to a great future, we want to thank all of our seniors for setting the foundation of what's to come, and working hard on and off the field. We have great senior leaders and they will lead-us on to victory, discipline and hard work is our trademark, so you tremble at our warning we'll return again.
GO Spartans....
Sparta is alive again, and we will prove all of you Gano-haters wrong tonite, with our win and by taking a share of the league title. It just goes to prove that everybody has a place, and Gano has found his at Damien! Football Spartans, it has been a great season, fun watching all of you get better and more confidant, and tonite we will celebrate the new era of football @ DHS! Water Polo guys - you ROCKED it yesterday - keep going straight to CIF Finals! Best of luck!
Folks, I will email Fred a bracketology update for the Central Division first thing in the morning for all to snuff out.
Yours truly will not be in the SGV today and will be at the Etiwanda vs. Rancho Cucamonga game tonight at Los Osos tonight.
I will be twittering updates throughout the evening at www.twitter.com/sgvierecruiting. Should be a great evening of football...
