Steve and I will go head-to-head throughout the season. Here is our updated records on the Tribskin Pick'em thread.

Robledo: Last week/Total: 18-1/163-37
Ramirez: Last week/Total: 17-2/149-51

Last Week: After last week's perfect 18-0 mark, I went 18-1 this past week, giving me a three-week record of 51-2, the best run in history predicting games. I picked the Bishop Amat upset over Notre Dame, the only game I lost was taking Bonita over Walnut, which Steve guessed correctly. Steve's losses were Bishop Amat and taking Mountain View over El Monte.

Good to hear from you Basic! They have a weight lifting program and back when we still had grass at Glenn Davis we did Oklahomas everyday. That was a while ago for me now, they do live hitting in practice but definitely now all of the time. But as far as voluntary work outs, yeah that's something that should be brought up I think, it would help. I hope all the sophomores on Defense have grown up over the past three weeks because we'll need them to step up along with the kids that are going to be back. It's going to be tough, but life is tough.

Go BEARCATS!

Basic Author Profile Page said:

D-Way,

I agree with what you're saying, I just meant that because most of the kids don't have the experiance, the coaching staff might have to spend more time developing these good habits of wrapping etc... As for lifting, someone said they do lift but I yet to see a single player go in early in the morning for an "Optional" workout like they do at CO or BA...

Anyway, good luck and like KH said "anything can happen" so good luck this Friday Bearcats, it would be a really "nice" victory and Fred might have shed a tear....

Durward Way said:

Basic,

I was the one who brought up (the well known) fact that kids from La Verne are pretty nice and am happy to see that you agree that niceness doesn't always correlate to a high value high school football program. Also, I don't think you are negative at all especially when evaluating your teams chances against the Cameron Avenue All-Stars.

To your points on lifting and hitting, I'd just like to suggest that while weight lifting is and should be an ongoing process, once the season begins, full speed hitting drills at practice are usually counter-productive and actually do more harm than good. Boys are either gonna hit or they aren't; a good football coach will be able to pick out the ones who will after a few hours of practice, the rest will be made receivers. Lol The actual practices of running live 'Oklahoma' or 'bull in the ring' drills like they do in kiddie ball won't really turn a gun-shy kid into Taylor Mays, they'll just teach him how to pair up with another contact-shy kid in the drill.

What full speed hitting drill can do for you is injure players, especially after the season has begun and guys are starting to get a little dinged up. The juniorallamericanpopwarner types think they are creating ferocious hitters with these drills especially when they accompany it with much red faced raving... they don't. Form does need to be taught as do good habits like wrapping and leg drive but love of contact is something that a kid has or doesn't. Good coaches can nurture it but they don't teach it.

For your information Bonita does have a lifting program bpth during season and off season and yes they do live tackling during practice and have several tackling drills. What would football be if the coaches didn't have the players lift and teach tackling. Come on now- our coaches do a great job!

It's True said:

Hey Basic,

Its very true what you are saying. But look at across you town at SD and its very different. I know Coach Z puts a great deal in off season developement and it shows with injuries, play, and self confidence. They really focus on taking the "Soft" out of Soft Dimas.

Basic Author Profile Page said:

KH and Aaron, I love the optimism you guys have for our Bearcats and KH you are right ANYTHING can happen in a game and that is why they are played. However, 9 of 10 times the better team will win and this year the Bearcats are not the better team. If Dog is right and they pulled their starters in the 3rd then I am looking at a final of 17 to 35.

Someone on here talked about the youth sports of LV and I could not agree with them more, LV is "NICE" which is great for our kids and the world but for football, well it might not be the best thing. This takes me back to what I said about coaching, most of our kids do not have the experience or knowledge to suit-up and play and that is why fundamentals are so SO important. I've never seen live hitting in practice or any tackling drills. Yes everyone loves our coaching staff but can someone please remind them that most of these kids have never played football, so how about setting up a tackling camp or a lifting program.

I know many think I am negative but all I want is for our kids to be successful in football as they are in many, many, MANY other areas...

Someone tell the GURU that TESORO finished 4th in the South Coast League of the Pac-5. No, they did not make the playoffs. They had a very young team this year. Look for them to improve dramatically next season. South Hills better be looking for transfers.

Does anybody give La Puente a fighting chance against Parcelete? It seems Parcelete is on a down year and La Puente has really had a surprise year under former Glendora coordinator Brandon Rohrer.. Interested to see how close the Warriors can keep that game.. Was shocked to see how badly LP played Azusa earlier in the year.. Should be an interesting matchup in case La Puente somehow pulls one out...

Damien-Upland should be interesting.. Not sure if too many teams are going to be able to score on that Upland D.. Held Glendora to 3 in the opener and shutout a very good Los Osos team who won their final four league games incredibly and EASILY played the toughest schedule around..

Pick for the Central would have to be Los Osos when you look at who've they've played.. Think the Grizzlies have seen it all and are certainly dangerous in the Central..What a tough division..

West Covina-San Gabriel should be fun.. I know SG's quarterback Valdez is one of the better dual threats in the WSGV.. West Co picked things up in league so interesting to see just where they stand from where they were earlier in the year..

I'll have to ask Patton for a prayer for rain as he asked for a prayer for good weather. Yeah we beat CO back in 2001 in what was a really, and I mean really ugly game. It was raining, and you could barely see the field with so much fog.

Bonita has one chance and that is rain. They should start doing the rain dance I believe they beat CO one year in the rain the great equalizer.

Big Husky said:

kh,

I would take that bet, but Bogan likes to pull out his starters early in the 3rd period of blowouts. We were up against Walnut 41-0 just after half time and he pulled all of the starters early in the 3rd period. The 2nd string and JV gave up 27 unanswered after that. The point I'm making is that sometimes the scores don't tell the whole story.

Don't get me wrong, I think its good that he lets the 2nd string play as much as he can. After all, they come to practice everyday and work hard just like the starters do. Having been a coach, it's a great feeling to have a game in hand and watch the 2nd string and JV get their time in the sun and make memories.

So anyway, I would give you 3 to 1 odds and the points if both teams starters played the whole game, but that probably won't happen.

I'm not knocking Bonita, but I just know that South Hills has a big, physical, and fast team this year. They will be tough to beat.

I went into the school office today and asked about tickets for the game on Friday.

They go on sale at the school tomorrow and the cost will be $8.00 dollars for adults and for anyone under 13 years old the cost is 5.00 dollars.

If you are a student of Amat you still don’t get a break. Unlike the regular season when the kids get in for free, CIF takes over here and the tickets will still cost you $8 dollars, however, if you present you student card when you buy your ticket, you get the discounted price of $5 Dollars.

That everyone is giving DR a laurel wreath when they've won no league titles in the four years they've been in the Miramonte and are nowhere near as talented as last year. Let's see SC sucks this year and so DR.

Azusa over Covina? Last year I would have agreed however this year is a different story. I think this young sqaud has proved they can play. They had a tough pre season and did well against Rosemead, Walnut and Rowland. In those games we were picked to get blown out. Our record does not show it however our play does. I admit that Azusa has the experience on thier side however we for sure played a much tougher schedule to get these young players ready for playoffs.
21 - 14 Covina.
