Baseball, we're talking baseball?

| | Comments (31) |

I'm going to start a weekly thread until baseball season begins, beginning with the top baseball fields in the area, since coaches and players take so much pride grooming them all year round. My favorite has been my favorite for over ten years, Gladstone. But what they heck, here is my top five

1. Gladstone - The closest we have to the field of dreams, thank goodness for coach Remkus' hard work.
2. Northview - Always in good shape, growing ivy on the fences, and a brand-spanking new snack shack.
3. Sierra Vista - One of the best kept secrets in the Valley. If you haven't seen it, you have to stop by. It's so enclosed you can't see anything unless you have a bleachers seat.
4. Charter Oak - Has a hometown feel to it, everything is enclosed, the field is always in great shape.
5. Bonita - Another field in good shape, the atmosphere is great, plenty of different spots to watch the games, especially on the hill above the visitors side. Great BBQ too.

kh,

Keep talking buddy; because the more you write, the funnier it is (after I decifer what you are trying to say). I see that 2nd grade education is really paying off for you. I'm writing this slowly because I know your mommy can't read this very fast to you. Hopefully when she gets done reading this to you, you will again realize nobody wants you on here. Keep your word & stay off of the blog.

Anyway, I'm done with you. You can say anything you want because my New Year's Resolution is to not respond back to you anymore. You make this too easy. I'll see you at some of the baseball games this year.

BTW, you still owe me breakfast on the South Hills/Bonita football game. But I'll tell you what; we will just call it even because it wasn't a fair fight. Just like when you & I go at it mentally it's not fair...I have weapons of mass destruction & you have pebbles (from the rocks in your head).

Take care Albert Einstein & happy 2010!

south hills infield a bigger plus said:

south hills has a new infield going. passing by i stopped to look and its all fenced off. looks like new grass cuz there wasnt a mound. now if the outfield got some lovin then it would be a great place to play

South Hills- always a nice infield and dugouts are a plus. No behind the backstop viewing is a drag and not fan friendly with space

YOU GOT NO RIGHT said:

kh,
Man you got no right bagging on kd and calling him a dork. The way you spell and you bag on him for field comments . I bet you couldn't put a six word sentence together without misspelling three of the words . Hear (not here) me now I will spot you three of the six . See Spot run, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ . Fill in the blanks without sending yourself into a mental fit. Another thing ,what is matiance. I think we all know why you sign on as kh . You would probably misspell your own name.

Disco Duck,
I agree that Quinely is a fanatic about his field and always had Northview looking good too when he was there, but if you've been to Northview at all in last few years, they've made some huge improvements since those days you speak of. Doesn't really look like the same place.

KH is a joke said:

HAHAHA - KH, I thought you were done on here. I set the over/under at 1 month and I took the under. I win.

kh said:

kevin donald duck.
finally something you can comment on, field matiance.
thanks for your input there big guy.
cant wait to here your next big blog..i know do some bloging on parking at the fields we all cant wait ; dork.....i here angel stadium is coming to check out c.o.field, because you said its as good as there pro field.keep up the graet blogs. kh.your fan.

kevin donald said:

Charter Oaks playing field is definitely the best around. The infield is comparable to Angel Stadium. Northviews is good also but remember Quinley put the dugouts in & the field was in better shape when Q was there. NV needs to put some water in the outfield. Remkus always has nice fields @ Happyrock.

Disco Sucks said:

Baseball Fields (I agree with Fred on some of these fields) Just thought I'd add a thing or two.
Gladstone- Perfect edge and meticulous details by Remkus keeps this place nice. Snackbar is nice as well. Remkus has been cutting edge (lol) on having great fields for years. If there was a bad thing, it would be that you don't get to see the areas best teams play here ever because of the leagues and/or non league games matching up big teams. Second, dugouts are tiny.
Northview- when I heard Ivy, I thought Wrigley, but thank god the Vikings are better than the Cubs. Field is always in very good shape, not great, but this place has best atmosphere with the crowd, music, and snackbar for the big game intensity you want that Fred has mentioned before. New wall backstop also nice feature. Best dugouts around, put in in the Quinley Days. Bad- Outfield is a bumpy ride.
Sierra Vista- if I remember right, outfield is horrible and no fence...can't be top 10 with that.
Charter Oak- Quinley lives on his field and it shows. Think the guy has a knowledge of fertilizer and seed? Best old school scoreboard freshly painted each year is the areas best. As nice as playing field is it does a few negatives. No backstop (just chainlink) and the atmosphere doesn't get that electric feel or maybe it's the pool drowning (lol) it out. Dugouts are small too.
Bonita- top of the hill spectators area is definately unique and a nice feature. Atmosphere is good too for big games. The outsides of the field are better than the playing surface itself though. Too big of out of play areas and the infield is not ideal for groundballs because of it's lumpy spots.
Amat- unfortunately, this field is just in bad spot so close to football field and having to be used for a parking lot for those games. No fence still baffles me. Great tradition and players.
Damien- the changes Leyva is making according to friends will elevate the field tremendously. This field has been dumpy in the past, esp. for visiting teams in the little league dugout.
South Hills- always a nice infield and dugouts are a plus. No behind the backstop viewing is a drag and not fan friendly with space.
Covina- jv field. Sorrounded by the areas best (Gladstone, Charter Oak, Northview, and South Hills) and this is what they have compared to the others. Bigger things to worry about I guess.
Baldwin Park- actually nice playing field and atmosphere. Tiny out of play area by dugouts and park style dugouts not a plus.
Glendora- the little league size field (distance wise) has always been a knock here, but other than that, nice pens and dugouts and field is in good shape. Rightfield sun can be a nightmare for rightfielders.
Azusa- old coach dehawn (spelling?) did wonders to this place...from one of the worst to a top 15-20.
Diamond Ranch- who submitted the plans when this field was created? For a new place relatively, what a terrible field.

just wondering said:

Hey Leyva was that you selling oranges out by the freeway this morning with a sign that said all donations go to the damien athletic program?

Quinley's Lawnmower said:

I can remember Quinley taking meticulous care of our field at NV when he was here and it's nice to see that his hard work continues at Charter Oak. Two things are guaranteed when he's coaching: his kids will always play hard and the his field will always be in great shape.

Let's go Vikings!!!!!

CIF SS said:

I'm hedging my bet that he goes to S-H ... only to get busted by the CIF cochinos with a athletically motivated boing-oing-oing.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Paul Paez was recently kicked off the Amat baseball team? If so he is welcome at St. Paul.

Not sure said:

Do not know if rumors are true or just rumors. Amat and the giant will not win CIF. Saw several games and coaches confirm pitching staff is very weak or if average. We know if comes down to decision and no Paez for the big games count it a loss. Just rumors. From what I heard and saw of Paez this summer and fall he is hands down the pitcher Amat has. As for the rest still to be seen???? rumors are just rumors hopefully they are just that. Amat fan. blue and gold.

Blowing smoke up your own butt: ya with their fake phoney grades in those crappy classes. Then how many of those 90% fall back to the jcs or the workfield. Numbers can be scewed and swayed anyway you want to put them. Many of those damien classes are gimmes. Its paid for with the tuition. Oh, little jimmy is failing with 2 weeks to go? How about 19 extra credit assignments to help him get his B? LOL

Sam Bowie said:

I can't confirm it but if he is, he'll most likely go to Sierra Vista since I believe he lives in the area and he went to SVJH.

blowing smoke said:

Damieninstitution, apparently you went to one of those big public schools that us Damien folks are dodging because you clearly havent done your homework.
Damien puts almost 90% of it kids into 4 year universities. If you want to talk sports the only thing I have to say is we work hard to be the best rather than your approach which is to just talk about about.
You should set your pride to the side and try it. You strive for average on and off the fiels.

hey I heard Glendora is getting their field redone and it's going to look amazing. one of the best around. also henderson field in glendora is the best it may be short but the best

Bonita said:

Hey - where is the Bonita softball field. I hear it is sweet!

TC Athletic Center said:

since you're talking Damien - if they do to the baseball field what they did to the Athletic Complex they'll be fine. That place blows Bishop Amat's new place to shame (and I bet they put more fans in it too!)

Carroll? said:

Carrroll? Is that guy still around? He was stealing a paycheck 10 years ago!

joke said:

Sierra Vista? That field doesn't even have an outfield fence!

Breakfast at Bernies said:

Somebody check the cart and see if Carroll's actually breathing. The parents and local athletic directors have been trying to get hold of him for weeks and cant find him! Maybe they should check the foodmart next door.....

SGV BASEBALL said:

I've always thought Bonita had a great baseball field aswell as their sports complex..... but I'm not too sure about the Gladstone field, too much graffitti going on, the outfield tarp is always ripped off by vandalism, and too many students ditch school and go off to the field to do their dirty business which really gives the school a bad rep

Damieninstitution said:

Just read these blogs. Damien is a joke. Who in their right mind would pay money to send their kid there? Dont even get me started on the teachers that are there. Some are uncredentialed. All of them are underpaid compared to the public school teachers. And the decorum that goes on in some of those classrooms is unbelievable. The parents that send their kids their are all the same. Dodging the big public schools, afraid of reality, and trying to be elitists. But the joke's on them!

Damiensuks said:

Well, lets see: The parents that are kissing his ass want their kid on the team and playing....the players kissing ass want to make the team or get playing time....and Travers well that just makes me laugh. You Damien people are just a crackup!

Leybas the Man!!! said:

Leybas behind the effort because he's the friggen groundskeeper. Travers is paying him a couple hundred a week to maintain the athletic fields at Damien. Thata how hes "behind" it. The players think that its a joke that their head coach is the groundsman at the school. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!

On the contrary said:

Hey Field of Sparta: Leyva, the head coach, is also the groundskeeper at the school. That is a little pathetic dont you think. Seems to me it may be the other way around. Travers has Leyva roped in now so he cant pull the disappearing act like he did at Claremont. And another thing, his first year (last year) will be his best. Its downhill from here slowly but surely. He rode that lefty till he dropped last year and this years best pitchers are just coming out of football and havent been playing baseball. Then factor in the gano factor and baseballs done. Damien under the "guidance" of Travers and Carroll will NEVER be athletically prominent again. Those two have to leave then MAYBE something can then get done.

***also this field improvement for baseball is just another monument Travers is doing for himself before he leaves. This has NOTHING to do with Leyva. You Leyva people have been at Damien for a year and think you know the lay of the land. Thats the real joke. Its on you! Leyva just being used as the nonteaching nonthreatening baseball "coach". The guys a joke, hes in his brothers shadows.

Always in Great Condition said:

I had the pleasure to play for Coach Remkus in the late 70's when he was at Charter Oak. He has always had one of, if not the best field in the valley. The grass and dirt is always perfect. I alway's thought it was because he was young and a little crazy. Now I understand his passion for the game, field and his players. Wish he had stayed at Charter Oak they might have many more titles. Good luck this season to all.

Field of Sparta said:

Fred,

When Damien is done with their make over of the baseball field it will be one of the best, come by and see. Leyva is behind this effort and he has players, parents and Travers eating out of his hand. He is doing the right things at the right time. Big things will happen this year at Damien.
