Obviously, these are INDIVIDUALS. And, “TEAMS not INDIVIDUALS”...how come the next words you write are about INDIVIDUALS from the Pac-5 that have played college and NFL ball...do you need any help removing your foot from your mouth?

I've said it before but here goes again...the thing about the 30 team Pac-5 is that it does contain some of the very best teams in the state and country but on the other hand it also contains perhaps 10 very average teams that, as proven by past results, can't beat or are at best marginally better than the good teams from so-called "lower divisions." Why? Because these lower division teams have high quality athletes...as evidenced by the number of D1 athletes that come out of these schools. And, should I remind everyone that Orange Lutheran was a D6 team in 2005 (and didn’t win the CIF Title) that won the inaugural Pac-5 Title in 2006? Point is, there are some pretty good teams in these lower divisions.

And "No Privates In Public", the difference between San Dimas and those public Pac-5 schools is obvious...enrollment size. Lakewood has over 4,200 students, LB Poly over 4,600, Los Alamitos over 3,000, Redland’s East Valley 3.600, Heck, Corona Centennial with 2,700 and Edison with 2,600 are small by comparison but, remember, there are 16,000 students in both the Huntington Beach and Corona School Districts…does anyone doubt that the best players intra-district transfer to the football program of choice? Why do you think that Westminster, Huntington Beach and Marina aren’t any good? Same goes for the Corona schools. Now CO is a single high school with around 1,900 and Bonita Unified has two schools, Bonita with 1,500 and San Dimas 1,200 which is why they are slotted to play in divisions against similar sized schools in their own neighborhood. Remember folks, the three CIF criteria for league alignment are Enrollment, Geography and Competitive Equity.

Over the past few years have CO, South Hills and Diamond Ranch’s teams been bolstered by inter or intra-district transfers…absolutely.

By the way, Steve Sarkisian was on CO’s campus yesterday personally recruiting some of those inferior lower “D” players.

Amat is in the top four of all of those teams that have won in one of the best divisions in the country. what that means is only 6 other teams have won championships since they won their last one. what that means is they don't determine their championship among all the little schools in this little valley against all the same little kids they used to play against in little boy football. most importantly, what that means is they determine their championships against teams in what the cif decides are the five best leagues in the cif southern section. thats what it means.

I like looking at numbers too. So this means over 20 years Bishop is 2 for 20 in championships and 0 for 14 in their last 14? 10 percent is not a very good average and those 2 came years ago. Thats the beauty of numbers is can you make them fit your side of a debate.

You guys at Amat are to much. Lets be honest here I have no interest in either school. The difference between Charter Oak and Bishop Amat is COACHING. The talent at Charter Oak is equal to or better than Amat. Coaching is so important as we all saw when BA made the coaching change a couple of years ago. Same talent only change was the coaching and look what happen in one year.

Now San Dimas doesn't have the talent to compete with the Charter Oaks or the Bishop Amats, but they do have the coaching to win championships. As we have all seen over the last few years, how many kids have got D1 scholarships from San Dimas. San Dimas runs the Wing T, most COACHINGS staff don't have a clue how to stop it. Now they have a real DC and they are winning CIF championships, at their level. Funny how one bloggers was making fun of San Dimas and their sophomore quarterback not making first or second team all league. When really the joke is on them, that is why they are going to continue to win championships, they play as a team. Win a CIF championship with an average quarterback, what does that say about your system?

COCupcakeFan - we're talking about TEAMS not INDIVIDUALS. The better Pac5 TEAMS are deeper than they are in lower divisions. If you are continuing to argue this you are ignorant and embarrassing Charter Oak just to try to make your point - which is way off base. I mean Pomona HS has a few NFL players - and how has that translated to their HS teams performance? Now - go to those same NFL rosters and see how many come from CIFSS D1 vs how many come from any other single division in the CIFSS. Then, after signing day, which is when you can talk about totals, check out how many NCAA signings come from the Pac5 and how many come form any other single division. Make sure to let us know.

Any of you "only the Pac-5" is real competition guys catch the Under Armour All American Game? Check out the roster...7 kids from California and only 2 of them came out of the Pac-5...so 5 came from these so-called crappy second rate divisions...how do you explain that SGV Athlete? And how do you explain that CO is going to have 5-6 kids from this year's roster move onto D1 College ball and Amat will probably only have 1. Seems that the college coaches don't buy into your only real men play in the Pac-5 baloney. If losing to D1 teams and never winning a ship satisfies your needs more power to you but don't come on here and act like a championship at a lower level means nothing. If your class populous calls for the level your at that's what you play it doesn't make it any easier to win or loose. for example what SD did this year was great what do they have 1300 kids or so? total for a public school there right where they should be and what does upland have 4000 would you say that's a good match up? Amat can recruit and get as many kids as they need they should be playing at a top level and there expected to win. If they can't win a championship 0-14 as you say well they need to prepare better or try harder. Something or someone is at fault maybe they should change levels at some point to get it done but excuses are azz wholes and everybody has one.

I find it quite hilarious that all these haters from second rate institutions are talking about "0-14" in the playoffs and hows AMAT families pay to see their kids win. We go to AMAT for the education and opportunity to make something of our lives. Sure, I could have gone to my local HS and not paid for anything to win a ring, just to graduate and end up working in a garage or at innout for the rest of my life. But instead I took the high road and have a great advantage to provide a very comfortable living for my family. And playing football, that was just for the fun of the game. Not a knock on Felipe in any way shape or form. Simply stating how good I think Cody was. I've mentioned before I've had friends on several staffs in the valley and I had a chance to see Felipe play several times - up close and personal. Spent that CIF final 1/2 on CO's side and 1/2 on LAs side. Felipe was very poised, a great decision maker, and a clutch performer. If I remember he was pretty clutch on the baseball diamond too. BUT... Cody was Cody.

Felipe was very good and was my pick for the QB of the decade (and the SGV has had some pretty good ones this decade - particularly out of South Hills and Glendora) But the POD is clearly Sean Cody.

Felipe was the real deal, playing and coaching are two different things I've always said that," good players don't always make good coaches." No doubt in my mind he could lead any team to a come back. He was a calm and collective qb who always wanted the ball in big games and was able to read the defenses well. I'm curious as to how many int's he had. I know back then when the game was on the line you always felt you had a chance and a secure feeling he would get the job done almost bradyish or elwayish but there was no doubt his size would be a factor for his future in football but he was a great high school quarter back.

Like you and all and understand your "criteria" for Felipe's selection. You've posted it before and I respect the fact that it's your list so you can set the criteria. Statistics are great - but deceiving too... yes? Comparing numbers across eras is impossible. Baseball fanatics struggle with that also. Too many factors - lowered mounds, dead ball era, equipment changes, stadium dimensions, and PED's. Basketball people struggle as well. Some ball-control offenses throw a dozen passes and use up much of the shot clock, limiting possessions for the opponent. So they give up fewer points. Is a team that scores a lot of points a worse defensive team because they also give up a lot of points?

Felipe threw a lot of touchdown passes because the offense had a lot of possessions. And how do you think they GOT all of those possessions? Because the defense, led by Cody, got a lot of stops and created a lot of turnovers. Plus this is a very "Maris like" comparison, when it comes to Aguilar and Haden. I'm pretty sure that Amat played 13 games, not 14, when Haden's team won a title and set the record. So "historical" significance is one thing but ther is one thing that I know for certain.

If ALL of the players on this All-Decade Team stood shoulder-to-shoulder on the goal line and you asked ANY coach in the SGV to make his first pick to start a team - they'd unanimously pick Cody. Extend that top the teams in that division that saw him play.. and the result would be the same. That, to me, made that decision easy.

I really like Felipe, he's a good kid (and I REALLY hope he get's another shot to coach - and pssst... Felipe... listen to me next time.... hire quality assistants that are older with experience. I tried to tell you to learn form Verti's mistakes... unfortunately...) But the reality is you could have probably plugged in Bobby Godinez at QB (and don't think THAT wasn't a heckuva controversy to begin with... still is?) and Los Altos STILL gets to the Finals. Would have been different - but still would have gotten there. Take Cody off that team and I think it's a different story.

if the topic is who has performed best against their division it has to be South Hills, because they've won the most championships). If it is who has won the most games, it is probably Charter Oak, because they've played the weakest schedule among the good teams. If it is who has performed best within the San Gabriel Valley, therefore the best team in the SGV, the numbers below say it has to be Bishop Amat.

Jose Camerena no doubt was the best kicker that I have ever coached and nobody came close. He had field goals of 48,50,52,54 and 57. He also kicked about 95% of his kick offs in the end zone and averaged over 45yds a punt. The thing that hurt Jose was being the starting quarterback. We at Rosemead always seemed to put out some great kickers, it is too bad the kicking coach left after years on the job and is currently looking for a school to coach at.

The only Amat record that matters is 0-14 in championships.

i remember a few years back seeing amat play mater dei back when they were both still in the same league. It was matt barkley's freshman year and amat beat them 28-7. I remember amat having a place kicker who kicked the lights out. i think his name was jeremy gener. Every kickoff went behind the end zone by at least 10 yards, and sailed as high as the stadium lights. He, without a doubt, deserves to be on this list.

His number is retired at DBHS, among all the other great players to come through the school. He was All-WAC at Fresno State, and currently is on the Patriots.

Remember, a player of the year is not about future potential or even talent, but about production.
When pro/college scouts evaluate players, they don't look at stats, but their skill set, and maybe their mental makeup. The results they produce are immaterial to them. A player of the year/mvp award is the exact opposite. The results are what has to be measured, not future potential or skill set. My opinion was that while Cody's numbers were impressive, although he did have 11 fewer sacks his senior year than his junior year, Aguilar's numbers were better, when comparing who he faced and the historical reference. Aguilar's performance was arguably, by the numbers, one of the best efforts in the history of the area for a quarterback. He equaled Pat Haden's single-season record of 42 TD passes and was just about 100 yards off of Mike Smith's area record for most yards in a season. I also believe his 42 TD passes nearly doubled that of any other QB. No QB since has even come close to those numbers. Now they both rallied their teams in the playoffs, Aguilar putting together a last-minute drive to beat California in the semifinals, and Cody having a monster second half to beat Charter Oak in the finals. But my opinion is that the historical referrence/comparison of Aguilar's numbers were the decider.
History and what has happened since doesn't change that belief.

I have lost count of how many times different Amat fans have stated that it is not the division that matters, it is who you choose to play in the preseason. You cannot choose your league or division, but you can choose the level of competition your program competes at.

Yes, Amat is in a lower baseball division but you would never know it if you looked at who they play. They schedule up big time each and every year taking on state and nationally ranked programs (hmmmm...sounds just like football). The same goes for St. Bonaventure or Corona Centennial w/ football. They are both from "lower" divisions yet they schedule up ever year. We do not even have to venture that far out of the SGV. Take a look at Diamond Ranch or West Covina...BA fans have respect for these schools because they have earned it.

We have no beef with programs that step up to greater challenges. OUR beef is with people that claim to be the best with absolutely no experience playing the best.

It's not that Charter Oak is in a lower division and therefore, inferior. It's that Charter Oak has refused to schedule up.

So stop comparing Bishop Amat baseball with Charter Oak football. Do your own damn research and YOU tell us who has the more difficult preseason...

Where is the Bishop Amat All Decade team? Position by position I would say they had a ton of players.
Now in terms of Bogan over the past Tribune 11 Year Decade what is his record against Gano, Farrar, Damien, Diamond Ranch or Bishop Amat. My guess is it's not very good or in some cases not at all.
Does anyone know the answer. Tough to reconcile a COD without so much as a winning record against the top five schools in the area over the past 11 years especially when so many area schools were down in the past five years.

I think the topic here is about the San Gabriel Valley, not the division. Obviously Amat plays teams far better teams than the typical SGV school, so of course they would have a greater chance of losing. So the question is, how do teams compare to each other within the SGV? Looks like "Blow Hard" avoided that question. Head to head competition looks like the facts are pretty one sided. It's tough to twist those facts. Unless you can come up some of your own to offset them.

Thats a nice record vs the SGV but what their record in the last 14 years in winning championships? 0-14.

I was thinking back on the ups & downs of Amat football in the last decade and thought I'd put some interesting facts together (you know how I am about facts). While I am the first to say Amat is not all the way back to where we want to be (and possibly the loudest to speak when we were at our worst). But , we ARE at least back in the team picture. It's always been Amat's goal to be compared to the top programs in one of the toughest Divisions in the Nation - but when we get into discussions like this one - we are comparing players and teams in the SGV against each other - *not against the rest of their division.*

When people stop looking at the wins we had this year as "upsets" but rather normal occurrences - that's when you're really back. Someone asked if you have to "win it all" in the next couple years. Anyone that understands the Pac5 knows that not to be true. We've said a number of times how long it's been for great programs like Servite and Edison. Servite has had a 2-8 season this decade with only wins over a 3-7 Lynwood team and Diamond Ranch. Tesoro a 1-9, Dana Hills 1-8, , Edison a 2-8 (albiet w/forfeits. Dana Hills 3-7 & a few 5-5s. The Friars just won their first since 1983 and Edison has been dry since 1980. So compared to that 1995 doesn't look so bad. Throw in the dozen other good D1 programs that have never won ONE - the Lancers are fortunate.

While Los Altos single season is without a doubt the best SINGLE season - giving them the TEAM of the decade, If you add to Amat's performance against some of the SGV's top teams to their other wins this decade over teams like Servite, Mater Dei, Loyola, Orange Lutheran, St John Bosco, Santa Margarita, Valencia, Alemany, Muir, Ayala, Peninsula, Chaminade, Lakewood, Redlands, Rancho Cucamonga, Crespi, Notre Dame... you might consider THEM for the SGV program of the decade.

And if a single season gets Los Altos the team of the DECADE, maybe this drastic turnaround performance by Hagerty warrants being in the conversation for his contributions in his short time as head coach of the Lancers. Before you have a heart attack - read my comments below re: COY - those thoughts haven't changed - but there just may be more than 3 in that team photo.

So , even in a "down" decade *against the teams we are measured against in the Pac5*, even with a couple horrible years - who has been as dominant against the best *San Gabriel Valley* competition as 22-2 (92%) with that kind of point differential? With NO "cupcakes" in the group. And there are 20+ wins out there that just might be more impressive than any single win any other valley team has. Refresh my memory of I'm wrong.

Makes you wonder about this "subpar" decade in Lancer football. What will the next decade be like now that the old flywheel is starting to turn again.

That's because usually it is an Amat fan or someone with an ax to grind. Hagerty has a done a good job with the Lancers but to say he's even in coach of the decade conversation is obsurd. His teams haven't even gotten past the 2nd round of the playoffs and he has won zero titles with Amat. Gano, Bogan and Farrar all have multiple titles to their credit. Hagerty is a good coach but to include him in this convo is just..hmm...stupid.

It's great that he's styed that involved. It seems like Coach Chip Kelly continues to do the right thing. Not gonna lie - after that Boise St loss I thought he was waaaaayyy over his head. He's won tons of respect since then.

Couple things stuck out in that articleon Thurmond was

Since you seem to think anyone who thinks Bogan is over rated is paramount to high school heresy let's step back and look at this rationally. Isn't this whole exercise to right one of the biggest POY blunders in Sportswriting history when any rational person would have selected Aguilar & Cody as Co Players of the Year at the least. So how impossible is it that the same publication would misstep again. As far as Hagerty being in the COD conversation could any logical discussion omit his great Amat turn around and incredible Goliath slaying wins over the past two year and complete area dominance in lightning speed? NO one is saying he deserves CD but he's at least an Honorable Mention. Consider Cody didn't only not win once but somehow didn't win twice? Is that incredible. Gano should have been the easy winner based on the performances of his team and the quality of players he produced which are significant. As recently as three years ago Gano wins another CIF Championship if Rodriguez, Contreras and Mc Bride don't go down with sht happens injuries.

Enjoy your Turd & Surf but don't believe this is all for naught considering the Tribune Decade is 11 years long. Cody played the 1999 season and Muema played the 2009 season, looks like the Tribune over shot their correction by one year, some people never get it right. Welcome to Fish Bowl Central. How moronic. The Coach of the team of the decade and the player of the decade and the coach of the two best players of the decade can't coach or out coach Bogan. Okay I see how this works. Seems rather odd that CO has the players on the list without beating anyone of merit in the past four year and getting beat by El Dorado when CO was loaded. The past two years SH was loaded and came up short. Didn't all those Championships prepare Bogan to prepare his team to beat DR in the playoffs the past two years? Here's the litmus test. Does Bogan get hired at Amat to compete in the Pac 5? The true test of any coach is how fast he wins and how often he wins with teams that have no business winning. The second test is the quality of individual players and their ability to perform at a level higher than anyone else. Hagerty and Gano hands down. The proof is in the pudding, great players, great performances, great seasons, great staffs, great victories. Sorry seen SH the past four years and was never impressed. Seen LA teams during their run and they were how many times better than COs three year run, lots. Prisoners of the moment, classic!

McD earned his spot in two years and hags comes in second to Gano in their two year run because like Mc D they did as much with less than most could have.

I tend to agree with him, Gano's qualities as a head coach didn't include his ability to coach. That is just one aspect of a head coach. We don't have very many head coaches in the SGV that are good coaches. Everyone talks about talent in the SGV vs OC, well personally we are lacking coaching more than talent. These CO, SH, and LA (old) would have no problem competing with the the pac 5 if they had the coaching that these pac 5 team have. A real good example of that is BA. When Hag and Staff started up over at BA everyone projected four years for him to turn that program around. He used the talent already at BA and was competing year one. That is coaching, something that the majority of the other local schools don't have.

"What Happen to LA"

Just a few years ago they were the elite program of the valley. Over the last three years there overall record is competing with the Bassett's of the SGV.

Recruiting - the upper classemen talent stopped transferring in, the program went downhill real fast.

Coaching - Never been one of Gano's stronger traits, Felipe in my opinion did a much better job but had no chance with the talent that Gano left him.

Demographics - Lets just say that the majority of the kids in the community are either in jail or playing badmintion.

Violence - Over the last few years major issues with gang violence within the LA football program.

Local talent - The Heights local talent isn't what it use to be. Don't see no young Cody's or Felipe's in the neighborhood.

Can anyone turn that program around?

I see no sierra league players on the team. Diamond Bar's Ryan Wendall was a great 2 way lineman for the brahmas and 3 year starter. His senior year was the offensive and defensive lineman of the year. 4 year starter at Fresno St and now with the NE Patriots. Ian Johnson should be on the team as he was a great back.

Wow...you leave Ian Johnson off...and Freddie Brown...and I see you dropped Drayton into the linebacker position so you could fit in Will Harris cause we all know this will be his highest honor as an athlete.

I thought Cornell would have for sure been on this list for sure but I guess there were too many linebackers to choose from. No arguments in regards to Team or Player of the Decade.

Like Lou since his days as a Roman (some former Lancers finished at Royal Oak). Coach of the DecadeS? We had some kids play baseball for Gano in his early years and swore by him.

But I'd also go with Bogan for longevity throughout the decade. Tough to argue five title games, (won 4) nine league titles and at least the quarterfinals in all ten seasons

Congrats to those on the list. Fred did a pretty good job - and someone will always be slighted. I might have put Freddy Brown on the list and we might be prisoners of the moment and leaving off Ian Johnson. Love Brandon Bennett (one of the nicest kids ever) but he might be the 3rd or 4th best O-Lineman the Lancers have had this decade. Cesar Rodriguez (started over 40 games at Kansas-6 as a freshman) Will Robinson (SDSU/Washington Redskins) and maybe even Jonathon Soto (SDSU) might have been better selections out of Amat. But we know how Fred likes those Bruins! And Cornell might have been as big a no brainer at LB as Cody as POD. Although maybe not over the other Lancer/Bruin FJR has at LB. But JC also started games at LB at Ole Miss in the SEC and wasone of Ed Obregon 1st prized recruits (former USC assistant - not in his favor when it comes to Fred!:?)
