Looking like the Amat of old, starting 10-0 with a 46-36 win over Sonora in Arroyo tourney final

Coaches stress that there will be nights when teams struggle from the field but can still find a way to win with strong defense. Bishop Amat High School's girls basketball team relied on its defense Monday night to win the 15th Annual Lady Knights Christmas Classic at Arroyo with a 46-36 victory over Sonora. It is the second tournament championship for the Lancers (10-0), who won the Rialto Tournament to begin the season.
"It was ragged out there," Lancers coach Richard Wiard said. "We had a couple of kids get banged up and that hurt our continuity."
The Lancers created turnovers leading to four fast-break baskets, closing out the first quarter with a 12-3 run.
Tournament MVP Andrea Villanueva got two of the turnovers and scored two baskets in the surge.
"I think defensively we caused them some problems," Wiard said. "That's where we were able to win the game. We were able to put some separation because we were good defensively and we were able to prevent them from getting into our lead."
Leticia Galarza and Michelle Yamamoto each hit 3-pointers to start the game, then the Lancers missed 11 consecutive shots from behind the arc.
"We got good shots," Wiard said. "We just couldn't make them. We missed an awful lot of shots in the second quarter, and when you start missing you get a little tight."
Freshman Leeah Powell came off the bench to break the streak. Her shot from long distance stopped a 6-2 run by the Raiders late in the third quarter to extend the Lancers' lead to 39-24.
"She's (Powell) a freshman," Wiard said. "So she's got a lot to learn, but she makes things happen when she gets in."
The Lancers battled the much-bigger Raiders under the boards.
"Every team we play is going to be bigger than us," Wiard said. "We all have to rebound, not just Leticia and Arielle (Wideman), and we did a good job with that."
The Lancers struggled in the semifinals with a slow-paced game but were able to pick up the tempo in the championship.
"We got the game going up and down a little more tonight," Wiard said. "But then they sat in that zone and everything ground to a halt. We missed a lot of easy open 3-pointers. I don't think we took any bad ones, we got uncontested shots."
The Lancers were no surprise to the Raiders (7-3), whose coach, Melissa Barajas, is a former assistant of Wiard's.
"We knew they would be ready for us defensively," Barajas said. "They played really good defense and we knew they would make a run. We were disappointed in our unforced turnovers. We're young and we just had too many mental errors tonight."
Galarza and Wideman each had 11 points to lead the Lancers. They were both named to the all-tournament team.
Sophomore Jasmine Hills led the Raiders with 11 points.
