Boys Basketball: Bonita comfortable at the top; South Hills, Northview start well in league

Above: Glendora needs to apply the pressure on Wednesday against Chino Hills

Boys Basketball top ten
1. Bonita (16-3) - They’re starting to hit full stride, and virtually have no worthy competition in league; not even Diamond Ranch.
2. Damien (13-4) – Beats Glendora, loses to Chino Hills, now must continue to win until they get Chino Hills again at home.
3. Glendora (13-4) - All the Sierra League contenders are hoping they can knock off Chino Hills Wednesday at home.
4. South Hills (13-3) – One of the hottest teams of late has won six straight with big game against Walnut on Friday.
5. Bishop Amat (14-5) – After a Del Rey League opening pounding from Serra, they bounce back with win over Cathedral.
6. Baldwin Park (15-2) - Lost to San Dimas stopped momentum, but can regain it at home against Northview Friday.
7. Nogales (12-7) – They didn’t just lose to South Hills, they got smacked by 30.
8. Charter Oak 12-5 — As well as they have played, they still lost by 18 to Bonita. Followed with two-point win over Diamond Ranch.
9. Northview (12-7) – Just like that, the Vikes are 2-0 in the VVL with big game at Baldwin Park on Friday.
10. San Dimas (10-8) – After starting with big win over Baldwin Park, loses to Northview in an ugly way.

The Bonita/DR game might turn out to be a lot different than many expect. If DR inserts the right personnel at the right times & give the green light to the right players (3 of whom haven’t yet to play their best offensively), Bonita could be in for a rude awakening.

Of course, DEFENSE will ultimately win this contest.

  • wondering how rankings work for SGV Tribune

    Fred,
I was reading the LA Times Sports section this weekend and saw La Verne Lutheran in the top 25 Boy’s Basketball teams. How can all these teams in the area be listed in the top 10 and not in the LA Times top 25, but this school is not listed in the Tribune’s top 10?? Is it based on record only or do your rankings take in account strength of schedule as do the other rankings out there??

  • wondering how CIF works

Hats off to LVL for the top 25 LA Times, yeah it brings up a ques about Trib rankings, bigger ques…with 4 teams in Times ranking from division 3A Gardena Serra, Compton Cent, Gahr and Harvard Wlake, where does COak, DRanch and Bonita really belong in CIF?
Or with strength of schedule/overall record does COak, Damien or Bonita deserve a look by the Times? Shows the difficulty with rankings…

  • Bonita

Well…since DEFENSE is going to decide the contest, go ahead put this one in the W column for Bonita.

  • Brahma93

Yeah and DRanch no longer has Kacey Barlow. He is now officially a Brahma again!!

  • Voice of the Trojans

Seriously Fred, you need to get out to a game at LaVerne Lutheran. Just watch one time. This weekends APU challenge would have been a great time, but no one in this area wants a piece of LVL.

Actually you can’t really blame them. Although they have lost some close games to some top teams, no team in this area can match up. I have seen every team on your list except Baldwin Park.

You have 6-9 sophomore Grant Jerrett who can handle the ball like a guard and throws down vicious tomahawk dunks or hits from 12-15 feet away effortlessly. Pair him with 6-8 junior Xavier Jones who swats away shots of players foolish enough to drive towards the hole.

In the back court junior 6-2 wingmen Bruce English and Kevin Payne sprint up and down the court for fastbreak points on offense and smothering defense. Payne is also deadly from the 3 point arc and English throws down some monster dunks.

6-1 Junior C.J. Cooper runs the point so smoothly that the opposing point is often overwhelmed to the point of exasperation.

6-3 frosh guard Eric Cooper may be the most talented player on the team and 6-4 frosh wing Nick Colletta is nearly automatic from the 3-pt line.

Every kid I mentioned has (or will have) multiple scholarship offers from D-1 schools.

This isn’t even mentioning the rest of the bench which consists of players in the 6-3 to 6-5 range. Plus not one of them is a senior.

The only senior is 6-6 Jordan Salley who has not played due to a knee injury sustained last fall.

There is a pipeline forming to LVL. At a recent open house, there were several tall 8th graders inquiring about the basketball program.

Fred, a powerhouse is emerging and you are going to “miss the boat”. You should reconsider.

  • Lucius McDingle

Looks like there’s a great recruiting system going on at LaVerne Lutheran.

  • How Embarrasing

    If…
you have 6-9 player who can handle the ball like a guard and throws down vicious tomahawk dunks or hits from 12-15 feet away effortlessly.
    and…
A 6-8 junior who swats away shots of players foolish enough to drive towards the hole.
    as well as…
Two 6-2 wingmen that sprint up and down the court for fastbreak points on offense and smothering defense, one who is also deadly from the 3 point arc and the other who throws down some monster dunks.
    to go with…
a 6-1 Junior who runs the point so smoothly that the opposing point is often overwhelmed to the point of exasperation.
    in addition to…
a 6-3 frosh guard who may be the most talented player on the team and a 6-4 frosh wing that is nearly automatic from the 3-pt line.
    not to mention…
the rest of the bench which consists of players in the 6-3 to 6-5 range.
    then…
I’m embarrassed that you ever lose a High School Game to ANYBODY!!!

With THAT kind of talent the coaching must be really poor. I saw the MLK games on ESPN from Springfield and no roster matched that description. Coaches gotta get to work!

  • just the facts!

:La Times#25 ,State Div5#2,CIF #1DIV5AA,SGVT#not ranked? that must be some prestige’s Poll!Lutheran must not exist in the San Gabriel valley?

  • Fork Tongue Fred

What’s the difference between SH’s OPEN transfer pipeline, CO’s WSGV pipeline and La Verne Lutheran’s Private school open enrollment team? Fred this is getting to be embarrassing. So which is it Fork Tongue Fred are you a journalist or not?

There is absolutely no reason not to include the Trojans in the local rankings. The three best teams in the tribune’s (small letters due to lack of journalistic integrity) all reside in the same city. LA VERNE (LVL, BONITA & DAMIEN) so clearly the cat is out of the bag !

  • Recruit

    Fred

I’m not sure where Bobby Miles from workman is going to sign for basketball but I heard he was going to be signing with a college on Feb. 3rd.

Here is a link with some information

    http://mslacat.wordpress.com/2009/08/09/griz-recruit-bobby-miles-serrano/

    here’s a sneak peak

From Greg Hicks of Scout.com this past May.

Bobby Miles, 6-0 PG City of Industry (Calif.) Workman. Our first look at Miles and he was impressive. Good feel, competes well, nice skill level. Want to watch him some more, but hes a D1 prospect at some level.

  • Voice of the Trojans

Why so embarrassed? If you don’t believe what I am saying…COME OUT AND WATCH!

Why have they lost games? Check out their schedule. They could be undefeated if they played a “typical” schedule that the local “powers” play.

Then you take a shot at the coaching???

All I will say is this:

Come watch a game. If you don’t want to see a league game then wait until the playoffs.

Don’t respect small schools? Just remember the names Price, Windward and Renaissance Academy and see how deep each team goes in their brackets. Ask Damien about Renaissance Academy.

    Have a nice day…

  • to how Embarrasing :just the facts

FYI- Jordan Salley the only senior on the team is rehabbing a ACL, most likely will not play this season, but still got a scholarship to Montana st. a mid major why? Coach Cooper has a commitment to his players !And you call that bad coaching WOW!

  • still embarrassed

just the facts – read that description of the players by “Voice of the Trojans. there’s NO WAY that team should lose. Some slight exaggerations – don’tcha think?
