Baseball is a month away, who are the top ten teams; 1-2 is easy, Bishop Amat and South Hills, you figure the rest; Chino needs team

I’m on the fence for No. 1, but it will be either Bishop Amat or South Hills, with Glendora, San Dimas and Damien not far back. Then there are the usual’s like Northview, Bonita and those expected to do well also like Diamond Bar, Walnut, Los Altos, Charter Oak, etc. I would also love to hear from you who might be this years sleepers, like maybe a Sierra Vista, Wilson, or Baldwin Park.

Chino High needs a team: Due to a schedule conflict Chino needs one baseball team for the Chino pre-season tournament. The dates are March 3,8,10,12 and 16th. Those interested should contact Bob Sheehan at 909-627-7351 ext. 3706.


That’s Mr. Kevin Smith: Wonder if I will get hammered for using this photo too? Hey, he’s our reigning coach of the year, and I personally can’t wait for the Huskies to meet-up with Bishop Amat this season. Both teams are also in the National Classic.

    Over at LA they have a great group of young kids. The major issue they have is no one likes or agrees with the coaching. Since Formano took over in ’06 they have been playing about .500 ball, with some great talent. The last two freshmen classes have been loaded with talent. This years freshmen class is lacking the talent of the past few years.

    Walnut has nothing to work with this year and graduated what could have been a very good team last year. This year they may have one or two players but the knock on Walnut baseball is that their coach has been there too long and really could not coach his way out of a paper bag. I thought change was coming and they were thinking of going in a new direction, wipe out the coaches and strart fresh. With teams like So. Hills, Nogales and WC Walnut never has a chance. Like the football team Walnut just does not achieve winning ways in these two sports football and baseball, but if you go to their water sports they are very good there.

    We’ll Diamond Bar has the same problem with Eric Shibley (Head Coach) the coaching will again be the problem, another season watching him get out coached, and out played. We’ll at least our field will look good. Glad it’s my son’s last year at DBar. Go Brahmas!

So what if coach Smith is arguing a call, that’s part of baseball. I have used this picture before, it’s not a big deal, it’s just a big deal to the people who want to overreact and make it a bigger issue than it is. Maybe you need to focus your energy and attention on the bigger issues in the world right now.

    LA does have some good young talent the problem is will the coaching staff be able to work with the talent they are given? Wonder if Formano will bring in some more of his buddies to help out at the varsity level. Good Luck LA!

    Formano IS A Good young coach and has the right things in order. What do you expect at LA?

    Spell out CONCRETE items that Formano has done that shows he is not a good coach?

    If you over at LA are LUCKY enough to have him “bring” some of his buddies over to coach with him, then you should that much happier!, he’s played with some quality/sucessful players.

    Again, is this just a “Sore” parent cause his kid wasn’t annoited, “THE GUY”?

    LA had three freshmen on varsity last year with the three highest batting averages on the team (.360 and above). The problem is the kids tend to under achive for Formano. I will say this, if my son was a pitcher, LA is the last school I would take him to. Formano has no clue how to manage pitchers. It’s a shame he has destoryed some great arms over the last few years. At most schools parents want their kids to pitch, but not at LA.

    Saw Amat play against two teams MLK weekend. They were horrible. They have no leadership in the dug out. Pitching average if that. So many errors i gave up counting the errors after the first game. They were missing Paez does any one know where he was at. Hitting was bad bad. Kids getting picked at first again. Same old story from players getting pick at first again and again and again. ????????? Amat fan hope this teams figures it out great players.

    All were over worked, some so bad that they sat out 3/4′s of the season. How can you come on this blog and act like he is doing a good job. The first sign of a poor coach is the comments that come out of the kids mouths at the end of the season. Every year the conversations are about are you staying at LA. The only reason why the kids don’t leave is because the program at Wilson is even worse. That could change with Matt Stark taking over the HC job at Wilson.

    LA was rolling toward the end of the year last year and you don’t make it to the quarterfinals without doing some things right. Formano and his coaching staff had to have something to do with that. This years strengths are defense and depth in both the infield and on the pitching staff. If they hit, they will win most of the time. If they don’t they will still be very competitive. You can probably expect alot of close games.

    as far as good coaching leading the way into la’s playoff run idk about that. Blaggs and Luna stepped up big time last year in the playoffs especially pitching. As for Formano, i would say he’s not the worst coach but he also isn’t the best. Their pitching coach there is clueless.

    South Hills deserves the number 1 ranking, but thats not how the season will end. SH returns some young studs but won’t be able to duplicate last years success. Two teams worth watching are Glendora and Damien. They both return many players and should be deep in pitching. Bonita will be interesting also. No big names but they will be scrappy. BA has too much turmoil going on right now. They are gonna need to get there head straight before the season starts. DBar has one outstanding lefty and then its down hill from there. Its not the coach, its the talent. Here are my Top Ten to start.

    Glendora has 3 quality starters on their staff Plutko, Smigelski, and Gonzalez along with a couple other very capable arms in Cage and Winterburn all seniors. Pitching should not be the problem with the Tartans. Scoring runs and getting consistent defense may hurt them in the long run as well as Henley and his inability to get the best out of his teams. But I agree this should be a very good year at Glendora. As for Damien if their senior lefty Amerhiem pitches like his sophomore year and if Guillen takes another step this year then they should have 2 quality senior arms there but they both have question marks. Damien also has a junior, dont know his name who is talented pitcher as well. Damien should swing the bat pretty well and is well coached by former Citrus skipper Skip Claprood who is not the head coach but obviously the most accomplished coach on the staff. I have a hunch that this year in Spartan land will not be as successful as last year however. Lack of summer program and late start to this seasons preparation will show up. These are just opinions from somebody who doesnt know anything…

    i can see the huskies starting out on top but a div.1 school playing in div6 or some thing around there in the top two, fred for once let the amat team earn the top dog.so when they start off and loss a couple games against the top 25 .teams around the states,then you well use ,well look who they lost too,they lost to clairmont in the grendora classic and you down play it,so we will again have to wait intel amat wins or loses cif to bring them off the top.if it really gives you a woodie,then let them ride big guy.just to let you know bonitas 6-0 in 2010,5-0 in the cory lindell.then smoking arcadia the other night.we should be #2 bonita smoking south hills 11-6 in the lindell games.and beating chino hills for the trophey they w knot out highly rated bishop gorman,there fred not bad .see you at the games.maybe not we dont play amat

    Stepped up big time, or just played at their potential despite Formano. The Blagg’s going into LA were some of the top players in the valley. We all saw how Formano developed these kids. Then you have Luna stand out freshmen year, numbers were way down his sophomore year.

    How is it with all that talent the three best players on the team last year were all freshmen. Three kids that haven’t been exposed to Formano’s coaching are the top players on the team. The numbers don’t lie, why is it that after being exposed to Formano just about every kid’s numbers go down.

    That team should be competing for championships with the talent they have. I am perdicting that in the next year or two LA Alum (Wilson HC) Matt Stark will be the new head coach at LA.

    Diamond Bar is more than just a one pony show. They have a outstanding junior pitcher Tanner Johnson, remember the name, he will be the stand out this season. He will be the back bone of the team. Coach Shibley knows talent when he see’s it.

I saw LA play a couple times last year and I saw kids that were overachievers. No way should they have ever beaten Bonita, but they did. When your team creates some upsets, you have to give the coach some credit. The baseball parents must have hung out with the football parents for too long. Face it Los Altos, you’re not that good. You probably should have been moved to the Valle Vista League with Wilson where you can compete.

    The parents and the kids don’t believe in Formano coaching style. It has been like this since he took over the program. That doesnt really matter to school administration; he is part of the click so he will be taken care of, just like Felipe. Just like Felipe look what he did to the football program, know Formano is doing the same to the baseball program. The big difference is the baseball program is loaded with talent, despite Formanos lack of coaching the team can still be successful.

    Someone came on this blog and made the comment that we beat Bonita last year so Formano must be doing something right. Talking about lack of knowledge of baseball let me give you an example of how stupid of a comment that was. Wilson beat Bonita last year also they were a much weaker team so what does that say about Wilson.

    Your very vindictive towards coaches at LA…..you must be the same person blogging all football season…..you need to relax and jus enjoy watching your son play…..if he’s not producing, cheer him on anyways and don’t blame coaches for your son’s lack of talent. Bottom line, in baseball, it’s your son who is in that box. If he can’t hit, well, that’s probaly the way it has been ever since little league. It’s sad that Formano is being riduculed by guys like you…..he’s out on the field working with these kids everyday for 2-3 hours minium. And they seem to enjoy it…..Just back off and relax….

    BTW, it was the players and not Felipe who have the football program on the bottom. They don’t have any talent or skill what so ever…..I know that’s hard for you to hear, but face it, with the exception of Longoria, everybody else are just not good….

    You are right on with Glendoras pitching, they are deep and are the team I expect to finish #1. Henley will put it together this year and make a run in CIF. As for Damien, there two senior pitchers need to step up. I don’t know the juniors name either, but I bet you speak of there tall lefty, the kid is gonna do very well this year. Again, BA has the players to do well, but too many head cases and issues going on with coach vs players.

    Can’t wait for the first pitch!

    Interesting comment about the football program. Just for the record Longoria wasn’t the best player on that team. Zamono was the best player on that team and it wasn’t even close. If Longoria wasn’t playing that team ends up with the same record, Zamono wasn’t playing I don’t think that team would have won a single game, football 101. Zamono would have been rated one of the top if not the top quarterback in the valley if he was on a charter oak or south hills type team.

    glendora please,lets not make them the amat of the baseball.we been hereing how good they are for ten years now,lack team speed and wont be playing home game up at the homer dome so saying that, what happened to them in the lidell classic, did they show up.can say all there players werent there .seen them all.really miss the there great summer coach roundtree,what a class act he was for the program.at lest winterburn loves and knows the game,might keep you on the field alittle longer then needed.but its ti cold for him to ride the harley so what else is there to do. great bunch of kids,its time they all stop bull shitting yourselfs and bring home the gold boys.just take care of business one game at a time. good luck

    Dont count northview out just yet…A new team. but they have a swagger to their play that coach murphy likes. Nortview has Bonita for the first game ofthe glendora tournament. I wouldnt be suprised if northview came out on top. their line up isnt half bad with the #2 hitter being able to drop down a drag whenever he wants and with that kids speed i think he’ll beat it out everytie. And with big sticks like Pedroza and martinez batting 3&4 they should jump on teams ealry. And its not the pitching that keeps them in the game its there defense. Witht the exception of the big play against chino hills in the lidle tournament, this team is in very good shape defensive wise. Always liked the way northview prepares there young men for march. They will suprise a lot of people this yr.

    Nieto is more concerned with screwing a kid (Paez) out of his chance for a baseball scholarship for not abiding by his every whim, he is willing to morgage his programs success on it. This is not the first time he has suspended or had a kid (Adam Barrera) removed from the team for what he deems disrespect. Nieto is and will be the demise of this storied program if something is not done to remove him completely.

    Get yourself under control coach!! Oh, and if you need more proof get out to Citrus College and see the two pitchers from Amat who where not allowed to pitch in HS but for some reason as college freshmen are two of the best pitchers on a college team….HHHMMM, what does that say about HOPPY & BECK????

    what it says is the depth of pitching at a school like Amat – and it’s been happening that way for years. A few years back didn’t a kid named Joliceur not even get on the hill for Kendrena and ended up pitching 4 years for Cal St Northridge.

    Transfer – what’s your point. Jio was not recruited. It was Coach Knott’s first year and he didn’t even make varsity until later in the year. Coach Knott didn’t even know who he was. He enrolled at Bonita and the rest is history.

    One thing you can’t argue with are the results Nieto is getting. Sometimes a player is not as good as the player in front of him. Remember this is high school ball not little league or travel ball where who’s ass you kiss or who’s friend you are determines who plays and doesn’t. It’s about talent not friendships. This song of it’s going to cost the program has been sung for 3 years going on 4 . Besides pitching has always been Amats strong suit so it is very hard to crack the line up as a pitcher.You need above average talent to be considered.

    To Nieto is the problem. So you are telling me the the two Seniors pitcher that are at Citrus now were better than Paez who going to USD and Zuniga how is at UNLV? If they would have been good enough and played a lot outside the program some would have picked them up? Where did those two seniors play outside of the HS team?

    I can hardly wait till the baseball season begins. The sierra league will be loaded this year from top-bottom. Looking at max preps Diamond Bar roster is already on line. If Tanner Johnson is good as DBar posted they will have a great 1-2 punch in Kenny Mathews and Johnson. They will need a 3rd starter and a key relief pitcher. Solid hitters seniors Jeff Crowe and Chester Pak return along with junior Jonathon Munoz. If Pak can play solid defense at ss and if C Tiger Chang can throw out runners the brahmas should be solid.
    I played in the RCC golf tournament this past week and Coach Dennis Rogers one of the best around did a good job introducing all the former tiger alumni at the banquet. Former brahma ss Richie Jiminez finished 2 great years at ss for RCC and will be playing at UNLV. Any players looking for a good juco program look at RCC. D-Bar players usually end up at Santa Ana or Cypress. Watch out for Yucaipa and REV in the IE as both teams are loaded again.

He will play one year and then be gone playing at a JC somewhere down here if he can still throw. Paez is a beast and is one of the best in so cal.     When it is all said and done there is going to be a bunch these guys in college baseball (or playing professionally if Plutko signs). Time to put up or shut up. If Glendora can’t win this year then something is really wrong over there.

    Chester plays the outfield, and Tanner Johnson the one to punch I don’t think so. The new roster is up on Max prep sports. Torres is playing SS, after watching practices this team is in trouble. A couple bats will not win you games, the catcher can’t get the ball down to second let along throw runners out. The demise of this team will be on defense, way to many errors at practice let alone in the games. Diamond Bar has one pitcher, and that’s Kenny Mathews, again we can’t win games with one pitcher. The Sierra League is to powerful for Diamond Bar, their only chances are next year when they drop into a much lower division, even then it’s not a given.

    “KH” how many times did northview hand you your ass this summer? and i dont care what you say about summer ball, when you get you lose 13 to 4 thats an ass kicking. to score 13 points you gotta do a little more than bunting. and when a kid drags at northview its because he see’s an oppertunity to get something started its called “playing the game” this is not a northview parent being cocky i just dnt like when someone doubts the abilities of a player…he proved he can hit the ball just fine against teams like j serra el torro, edison. Those names speak for themselves. Our boys will be more than happy to take your ass to the scrap yard! I think it should be another first game loss for bonita this yr in the Glendora tournament!

    By the content, looks like some kh wisdom to me. And I happen to agree that the hit and run is almost non-existent in high school perhaps because too many of these kids just cant make contact let alone hit it where they want. I believe that it is because, unlike khs and my era, these kids dont play enough over the line, which is where you learn to control the bat at an early age including hitting ground balls. Watching kids pop out with runners in scoring position just drives me crazy

    And kh is right about summer ballsome teams which includes Northview work very hard in the summer, including scrimmages against other teams, and others take time offso it is not surprising that NV is in better playing condition at that time.

    I dont know Nieto and dont care one way or the other, but LANCER 4 LIFE is 100% correct about having your best hitter bunt with last years game vs. SD on the lineabsolutely a stupid managerial decision that my baseball pals and I couldnt believe as it unfolded before our very eyeseither Nieto choked or isnt a geniusIll leave the answer to the Amat fans.

    You can blame watching all those kids popping out with runners on base because of the glorified battles between the roidmen and all those epic fake azz juiced up HRs they were hitting during the steroid era. If not for them, hitting singles and doubles and working the runners over would be the way the to go instead of looking for all the glory by hitting the HR. You see McGwire and co. have done more damage the earlier thought.

    The reason why Los Altos is a .500 program…

    first of all, it all starts from the top. administration does nothing to back up coaches. they have no pride in their athletic programs. this has been the problem since Roberts left.

    secondly, the kids that soft! The want to be the best without putting in the hard work on their OWN time. The three underclassmen and Luna are the only ones in that play COMPETITIVE baseball throughout the whole year.

    third, parents are too quick to come and complain about their kids. Parents need to back off and let things unfold as they are. Some of your kids really aren’t that good and you have to accept that. It isn’t little league where your kid needs to get his one at bat or his three defensive outs!

    to clear things up about Formano ruining kids arms… that is completely not true. This is all from lack of running and jobe exercises which should be done without a coach being of their tail about it. If you are a real baseball player you should know how to keep your body in shape to last the entire year. Half of the time the kid isn’t even hurt.. they are just afraid of competing.

    with all this said… I think Formano has done a great job being a teacher/baseball coach. I think dealing with the parents at LA is half the battle. Lets remember that this job was thrown into his hands.

    You should read what you just wrote; the kids don’t warm up properly so that is why LA has so many arm issues. If I was the head coach and they didn’t warm up properly then I would sit them. Trust me from experience it will stop. What is even more interesting is your comments, the majority of the team doesnt not support Formano as the head coach. A matter of fact those three freshmen were talking about leaving the program because of Formano, they may respect him because he is the head coach but they dont support him.

    Let’s read between the lines lack of discipline and respect. You want to point the finger at the kids and parents well that sounds real familiar. Talk to Felipe, see where that excuse got him.

    It’s called lack of LEADERSHIP.

    I agree with the no leadership part that comes within a player. It does not mean that a coach has to appoint someone as a leader or captain. True leaders will lead a team without seeing it as a task. Coaches cannot be leaders they can only be motivators.

    I never said they dont warm up properly and if you think they dont warm up properly than whose fault is that?.. Im sure Formano gives them the right amount of time to warm up.

    About those three freshmen I would think that they are totally behind the program since two of the parents are the vice president and treasurer for their booster club. I really dont see them transferring since they get some pretty good exposure with their travel ball team.

    The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
