Friday Boxscores: San Dimas beats Baldwin Park again; Charter Oak shocks Bonita; Damien sweeps Glendora; Rowland knocks off Walnut

SAN DIMAS
— San Dimas high school boys basketball coach Bruce Robbins may not have all the answers, but he may have figured the solution to solving pesky Baldwin Park — take away one of its two high-powered scorers. While Baldwin Park’s Fernie Morelos scored a team-high 17 points, San Dimas’ K.J. Byrd smothered the Braves’ other big scorer for the second straight time, holding Tomas Montes to just five points — his second worst game of the season in San Dimas’ 70-56 victory on Friday. Montes, who averages a team-best 16 points, had his worst scoring game against San Dimas in their first meeting, scoring two points in a 65-54 loss.
Even though Chris Barbatos’ four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and game-high 21 points for the Saints obviously had something to do with it, Byrd’s dirty work didn’t go unnoticed.
“Baldwin Park is an explosive team, they’re averaging 70 points and we held them to under 60 both times,” Saints coach Bruce Robbins said. “We know (Montes) is a great shooter, but we’ve got some length that we feel interfere’s with his ability to get shots off, and he (Byrd) did a terrific job of not letting him get free looks.
“Morelos is a load, he made some difficult shots in transition, but that was the game-plan we used against them the first time, and we were able to execute it again for the most part.”
With San Dimas leading 28-24 at the half, Saints forward Kevin Kolbeck was key in the second half also, finishing several back-door-passes to end up with 15 points, 13 of which came in the second half.
But even Braves coach Marc Hart realizes that the difference in both losses was Byrd.
“Tomas didn’t play well in either game,” Hart said. “Give the kid (Byrd) credit, we couldn’t get shots for him. The kid just played excellent defense.”
Baldwin Park (19-3, 4-2) is having a terrific season, winners of three December tournaments and a huge 63-61 victory over three-time defending league champion Northview that ended the Vikings’ 31-game winning streak, and put the Braves back in the league title hunt.
But San Dimas (14-8, 5-1) has the inside track, and can all but wrap it up with a victory on Wednesday at home against Northview, whom it suffered its only league loss, 59-56.
“You don’t get a chance to relax and feel comfortable with anything,” Robbins said. “There are still a lot of games to play, Northview beat us the first time and they present different problems for us.
“But it was nice to get this one. Kevin played a great game all night long, and Chris is a good shooter. Once he starts shooting well, if you’re not going to guard him he’s going to knock shots down.”
Baldwin Park received 10 points from Jimmy Ramirez and nine from Eddie Gamboa, but the Braves’ hopes of winning their first league title since 1984 are fading.
“It’s not over,” Hart said. “I just told the guys to win the final four games and let the chips fall where they may. They (San Dimas) still have Northview and we have Northview again, so who knows?”
