Boys Basketball: With the playoffs a week away, who’s leading the race boy hoops player and coach of the year?

While waiting for Aram to check-in next to me this morning, we have a week to go before the basketball playoffs. That means we have to start thinking about the boys and girls basketball players of the year and coaches of the year. I’m going to throw out some candidates, but of course so much can change in the postseason. (Girls candidates later in the week).

Boys Hoops:: Chris Adams, Damien (18 pts avg); Chris Reyes, Damien (16 pts, 8 reb, 3.3 blocks), Bobby Miles-Serrano, Workman, (26 points avg); Calvin Smith, Glendora (21 pts), Chris Barbato, San Dimas (16 points), Tim Fassas/CJ Miller, Bonita (No stats reported).
Boys Coaches: Martin Flores (Workman), Bruce Robbins (San Dimas), Paul Reed (South Hills), Greg Eckler (Bonita), Marc Hart (Baldwin Park), Matt Dunn (Damien).

Grant Jerrett LVL – 19.8 ppg/10.9 rebounds 81% from the line. 2 blocks per game.

For those who think those numbers are padded by Arrowhead League contests.

    Non league averages 18.8ppg/11.7 rebounds.

Included is a 31 point 20 rebound effort against Bishop Gorman. 29 points agst Compton 24 agst both Clovis East and Foothills Christian.

Overall numbers would probably actually be a lot higher if the played in a different league.

A sophmore to boot and the main reason Howland stopped by LVL.

I hate South Hills but they came out of no where so COY goes to Paul Reed. Same can be said for Marc Hart of BP.

Smith from Glendora….hands down POY. Tough league and scores 21 pts, plays great defense. Complete player. Enough said.

Brian Johnson of Northview with a 19.1 ppg and 9.2 rpg.

  • C’mon

If anyone besides Bobby Miles gets this award it would be somewhat baffling. A 4 year stud, League MVP, and has lead the talent lacking Lobos to a back to back championship (with their one loss in league being an opening game/fluke). With all of the losses, from the transfer of highly touted Cezar Guerrero, the season ending acl/mcl injuries to senior rocks Molina and Flores, only Bobby could have pulled this off. He was a McDonald’s All American nominee and is the only one of these guys thats getting any real college looks/offers. I know that all of the “but it’s Workman” talk is going to follow this, but put Bobby on any of those other teams or them on this Workman team, and you will see the truth. Not to mention that if Bobby was to go heads with any of these guys he would smash them. Give Bobby Chris Reyes and he would be unstoppable. Run 20 picks per play like Smith gets and Bobby would average 35! Bobby is usually double ot triple teamed and still puts up these numbers. Not to mention that he is a defensive BEAST!! And stop with the Montview/Workman talk because Bobby’s summer travel ball team beat Mater Dei and most of it was because he held UCLA commit Tyler Lamb to 2 pts!!!!

    Fred, it’s gotta be Bobby……

EXCUSE ME “CMON”, but CHRIS ADAMS has plenty of division one scholarships, he has lead his team to where they are now. The kid works hard and is a great leader on the court, Damien is in a muuuuuuuuch better league than workman so what does that say?Give the other guys credit atleast…

  • BALLFAN

AND excuse me.. but Calvin and Adams both are “ALL AMERICAN NOMINEES”.

I have to agree with cmon. Nobody else could do what Bobby has done. NOBODY! Chris Adams has great role players and around him and they help him lead. Bobby is a LEADER! He will rally the troops, get his team involved, average a triple double because of how much work he is putting towards his team. Yeah they play for the Montview league, but I highyly doubt UCLA is looking at Chris Adams or Calvin Smith. I have seen both play and maybe only Chris Adams is at Bobby’s level, Calvin is a DIV 3 guard at best. Chris would need a year to redshirt, while bobby is an instant WCC player, possibly a PAC 10 talent. I was at that AAU game where he locked up Lamb, kid can play, by far the best in the Valley.

  • C’mon to BALLFAN

    BALLFAN,

I 100% give Adams and Damien credit. I have seen him play for two years now and love his game. Actually, he did a great job against Bobby in the Nogales tournament. I just think Bobby is on a different level than most think. I completely understand the league stuff, but Bobby has brough attention to Workman when none ever existed.

    He’s the man…..

It definitely shouldn’t be Bobby Miles. I was in the Montview league and had to guard him, and im not even a tremendous athlete, but how many points did he score? yeah only like 12. He gets every call possible, the refs treat him like he’s Lebron. And to top that off he’s a piss poor free throw shooter. However i do believe he’s a great player but definitely not valley poy.

  • THATS RIGHT

oh?? he only had 12 pts??? so you must have beat up on Workman then huh??? Oh wait was that the game he had 18 assist??? Wow a pg found his teamates. What is this world come to. Good Luck in Hawaii.
