Wrestling notebook: Wrapping up league finals

By Steve Ramirez, Staff Writer
Sierra Vista High School has been the dominant wrestling team in the Montview League in recent seasons, and that didn’t change this year. The Dons, who had won the league the past five seasons, made it six for six and put together a solid performance during the league finals at Gladstone on Saturday.

Sierra Vista advanced eight competitors to the finals, won six and qualified 11 to the CIF-Southern Section Southern Division championships at Temecula Valley High School on Feb. 19-20.

“I think we wrestled well at the beginning of the season,” Sierra Vista coach Tony Gonzales said. “We had younger kids this season, so I wasn’t sure where we would be. But we improved on what we did last year at league finals. The kids just put it together at the end of the season.”

The Dons were led by champions Adam Lopez (114 pounds), Jose Maldonado (137), James Aguilar (147), Luis Hernandez (162), Matthew Perez (191) and Jordan Tapaoan (heavyweight). Maldonado was lower-weight MVP.

The Dons now turn their attention to the dual championships this weekend before the individual championships next weekend. Sierra Vista will host the Division 6 dual meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Other Montview League champions included Bassett’s Luis Arroyo (105) and Chris Travon (121); Duarte’s Angelo Rivera (142) and Anthony Rubio (154); La Puente’s Robert Salazar (132) and Jesus Vargas (217); Gladstone’s Aaron Sanchez (127); and Azusa’s Juan Salgado (173).

Lancers don’t skip a beat

This was supposed to be a rebuilding season for Bishop Amat.

But the Lancers, despite returning just three starters, simply reloaded, winning another Miramonte League title and dominating at league finals.

Bishop Amat produced seven champions and qualified all 14 wrestlers to the CIF-SS Inland Division championships on Feb. 19-20 at Fountain Valley High School.

“They’ve come a long way from the start of the season,” Bishop Amat coach Tom Pierre said.

The Lancers’ champions included Rodger Rodriguez (105), Bobby Ramos (121), Mikey Martinez (132), Anthony Rodriguez (147), Brian Meave (173), Justin Mueller (217) and Daniel Kane (heavyweight).

Bishop Amat will now turn its attention to the Division 4 dual championships at Cajon High in San Bernardino on Saturday.

Other champions at the Miramonte League finals included Charter Oak’s DJ Garza (127) and Javier Garcia (137); Wilson’s Javier Zamora (114), Victor Villa (142) and Ray Garcia (191); and Diamond Ranch’s Kyle Abrantes (154) and Tommy Orona (162).

Nine Vikings crowned

Northview dominated at the Valle Vista League finals, winning nine championships and qualifying 11 to the Northern Division finals at Pacifica High in Oxnard.

The Vikings champions included Nick Jacobo (105), Gilbert Nakatani (114), Frank Martinez (142), Pedro Rodriguez (147), Elvis Arce (154), Steven Lopez (162), Eric Fuentes (191), Justin Diaz (217) and Chris Auxier (heavyweight).

Other league champions included San Dimas’ Jacob Martinez (121), Chrystian Banuelos (132), Jake Wright (137) and Bobby Santiago (173); and Covina’s Daniel Gonzalez (127).
