The key, however, came in the fourth quarter when they clung to a 32-30 lead, Gina Henderson came up with five straight points, her only five of the night, sparking an eventual 8-0 run that gave the Lancers a 40-30 lead and they never looked back. Bishop Amat, Serra and Bishop Mongomery all finished in a three-way tie for the Del Rey League title with 4-2 records.

Chino Hills Tom on Damien-Ayala boys hoops: It shaped up to be a tough game when The Ayala Bulldogs traveled to Damien High school to take on the Host Spartans with the home team coming away with a hard fought 58-50 victory on Tuesday night. This Sierra league contest could of left 1 team alone in second place, but instead we have two tied with identical 6-3 records going into their final games on thursday night. It was a close back and forth game thru 3 quarters, Damien led 13-8 after the first and 24-23 at the half, and it was in the second half that Damien Coach Matt Dunn felt his team was able to pull away, “I thought our competitiveness was better in the second half, both teams were feeling each other out, but I thought we competed better in the second half”. Indeed they did with, Ayala up 35-31 towards the end of the third quarter, the Spartans used a 7-2 run to take a 38-37 lead, and extended the run into the 4th quarter behind the outside shooting of Sr Chris Adams, 19points and Terell Bolden who finished with 11 points. The Bulldogs got as close as being only down by 46-42 with 2:50 left in the game and 53-49 with only 47 seconds left but were unable to score from the outside. Damien also got 16 points from Chris Reyes, Ayala was led by Sophmore Matthew Ponce who had 15 points, and Junior Andrew Ortiz with 10.

Ayala falls to 6-3 16-10 with one game left against Glendora, while Damien goes to 6-3, 18-7, they have their final Home game on thurs against Chino, after that both teams can look to the CIF play-offs, When Coach Dunn was asked about his chances in next weeks play-offs, he replied ” Were absolutely excited,…we’ve talked about it being a long journey, and its alot of fun to go the play-offs, and we always set a goal to try and play our best basketball at the end of the year , now were going to get a chance to do that”
