West Covina Football: No Amat, but Venice, South Hills and Glendora a Bonafide Trifecta

Spoke with West Covina coach Mike Maggiore, who said a game with Bishop Amat was close to happening, but he thought facing South Hills in week 2 on a Thursday night at the District Field was more appealing, and I couldn’t agree more now that the rivals are not in the same league anymore. BTW, I’m hearing that in addition to Garfield, Bishop Amat is close to inking a nonleague game with Venice at home.

West Covina sked: Week 0 (Covina H), Week 1 (Venice H), Week 2 (South Hills A), Week 3 (Glenodra A), Week 4 (Walnut A), Week 5 (Rowland A), Week 6 bye; Week 7 (Los Altos H), Week 8 (Bonita H), Week 9 (Diamond Ranch A); Week 10 (Dia. Bar H).

Good for West Covina. It is good to see valley teams competing against each other when they are not in the same league and also playing out of the area once or twice—–its good for everyone.

  • El Rancho

West Covina is smart for getting out of the El Rancho game week 0. After the beating the Dons put on WC last year, there is no way they wanted to have to face ERHS again. Hopefully we see you guys in the playoffs so we can out hit you guys again! Blue Pride!

  • Dan Fan Club!

Hurry Dan I’m posting a comment before you are because everybody will agree with me when I say, “You’ve always got something to say about West Covina Football..!”

  • sgv football

West covina is my fav. For taking league nxt year in their new league.

  • El Rancho What……..

    El Rancho,

Does your high school program cheat as much as your youth program does????????

  • SGV FOOTBALL

Please no name jacking, get another name sgv football…

  • lil things

Back in the neighborhood when two guys wanted the same name the second one was called. “LIL” as in Lil Shiner!

So SGV FOOTBALL and sgvfootball I suggest a truce and sgvfootball to be called “lil’ from now on. Seeing as he’s always signed in lower case letter…it’s a natural !!!

    lmao

  • Dan

    El Rancho,
You got one on us last year, we took you lightly and paid a big price for it with all the injuries in the first half, it actually wrecked our season, but it will be a blessing in disguise because 5 or 6 kids got a lot of game time experience that they probably would not have gotten last season, and it will show this year.
You know as well as I do that even as bad as we played in the first half we would have rolled your boys in the second half if we were healthy. West Covina would also have pounded the Ranch if they met in last seasons playoffs, it would not have been close, and if WC meets the Ranch in the playoffs next season they will not take them lightly and will end their season, you said WC didn’t want to face El Rancho again? That’s hilarious, they would have loved to face El Rancho in the playoffs.
As for the new schedule, I like it except I would have liked to have seen at least 1 D1 level school in there just because its always fun to take a shot at the big boy’s, or even Charter Oak would have been nice for week 0, I know Mike made calls to a few of the big schools [St Bonnie's, Anaheim Esparranza, St. Paul] and even to Charter Oak but things must not have worked out.
Covina could be pretty good this year so we still might have 4 tough games for preseason, then the new Hacienda league will start and that could be a pretty tough league next year.

  • fact finder

Quick fact for you. did you know that Troy Aikman was born in West Covina CA!!! Thats means Edgewood might have had the baddest QB to walk the planet playing on their fields to bad he moved to Oklahoma when he was 12 and everything sky rocketed from there. He was also offered a contract to the MLB right out of high school

  • Born and Raised SGV

Covina in week 0 and SH in week 2. I love the fact that we are on track to building local rivalries once again. West co at ELRHS or Venice “who really cares” about them or the drive.

  • Rumors

West Covina chooses to play South Hills over Bishop Amat and opts out of El Rancho yet tried to schedule nationally reknown St. Bonaventure?

YEAH RIGHT. Common now Dan…you know better than that.

    Dan,

Shut Up Dude….You didnt beat when you had talent, you would not have beat us last year, and you wont beat us this year. Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda….etc. Work on getting past your first 5 weeks like we have too!!

    Dan,

Several people have told me that Charter Oak had one team and one team only in mind Week 0 and that was Glendora and not because of their hatred for them but truthfully the rivalry game between them and the communities is awesome.

Now some from Bishop Amat and even you now suggest maybe Charter Oak hesitated to play either the mighty Lancers or the dominant Bulldogs. Absolutely unequivocally without out a doubt NO!

Charter Oak will probably schedule Bishop Amat hopefully a year from now because they will have a few more openings in their schedule but as for West Covina why play down? South Hills is like Charter Oak playing Glendora makes sense with crosstown attraction but seriously even you have to admit Charter Oak playing West Covina does nothing for them.

How many times in a row now in meaningless but more importantly meaningful games (playoffs) has Charter Oak kicked West Covina’s ASS? Game, set, match! They’ve moved on to bigger and better programs. Diamond Ranch is now the best team in your league and Division representing the “old” Miramonte so focus on the ball Dannyboy!

  • Dan

    Rumors,
Believe me the calls were made to the schools I mentioned, I wasn’t insinuating that any of the schools that WC called were afraid to play WC but that things like schedule conflics just didn’t work out, as for calling nationally reknown St.Bonnies why would you find that hard to believe? They scheduled nationally reknown Mater Dei and Nationally reknown Amat these past 4 years, WC loves to challenge themselves.
    DRanchhh,
How in the HE double hockey sticks did Diamond Ranch get into this conversation, I was talking about El Rancho not Diamond Ranch, you see when you grow up near Pico Rivera the phrase “The Ranch” refers to El Rancho not Diamond Ranch, they didn’t even exist back in those days. but now that you brought it up, I saw Diamond Ranch twice last season and they were not even close to the team they were the year before. I think WC beats them in the playoffs. D Ranch couldn’t do jack against CO. Take away the 4 or 5 drive killing fumbles and WC vs CO is a heck of a good game last season, two of those fumbles were on lost snaps and I haven’t seen the film to see what caused the other three. Was there any other team on CO’s schedule that was able to roll up 290 yards on the ground against that vaunted CO “D”. Can you imagine if the 4 three year starters that we lost during part of the season had the whole season to play and improve
how good they would have been at playoff time?
Can’t wait to see your boys next year, they better come to play.
    s.g.v. football,
Like I said above I wasn’t insinuating that CO was afraid to play WC, with the success your boys have had against us why would I ever think
that? I even mentioned in a previous thread a few weeks ago that these other schools [ST. Bonnies, St. Paul, Esperanza and CO] probably were looking for higher profile games than WC.
Now as for your comment of why would CO play “down” against WC I don’t think next years CO team would be playing down against WC, your loseing all your studs to graduation and next years WC team rolled over next years CO team when they were at the freshmen level, so your probably right that it would do CO no good to play WC next year cause there’s a good chance CO
would lose. As for D Ranch being the best team in our league I think there is 3 or 4 teams next year that will have something to say about that.

West Covina smashed on every one in their league except for South HIlls, and their first team all-valley tejada didnt play that game! they got one of the best coaches in the valley and thats why league should be a walk in the park for them next year.

  • the real elrancho

You cannot say that those injuries were the cause of losing to ER. ER completely knocked WC around in week 0 last year, i’m 100% sure WC did not know what hit them that night. I would have loved another ER vs WC week 0 game this upcoming season, but unfortunately it’s not going to happen. A playoff game would be pretty big, I don’t think you guys would roll as easily as you think, i’m sure you felt that way during the month of August 2009 and you saw what happened.

  • Dan

    real el rancho,
We did feel that way in August 2009 and your right we payed for it. As for WC being knocked
around that night remember that it was several inexperienced players that were being pushed around. First offensive play of the game we lost
our team leader who was an all cif 3 year two way starter at DT and OG. Second series we lost big #33 fullback/Linebacker who if you remember the year before ran rampant on you guy’s, he was also a 3 year starter, 2nd quarter we lost our all CIF defensive end who also had started since he was a sophomore, also in the second quarter another linebacker/offensive lineman who had been on varsity since his sophomore year and had started since his junior year hurt his leg but refused to come out of the game, nobody knew this at the time but turns out he was playing with a broken bone in his leg, we ended up loseing him for a longer time than all the previous three players that I mentioned. Now
don’t you think if we had all these boys in the second half they would have regrouped and it would have been a different game? I know its a woulda shoulda coulda situation, the fact is El Rancho won that night and nothing will change that fact, but in my mind I’m confident that a healthy WC wins that game in the second half, I’m not sure but weren’t we winning at halftime?
As for meeting you in the playoffs I hope it happens next year, anything can happen in a game
but I’m sure the returners will remember what happened this past season.

    Dan,

    Reasons, explanations, excuses…

Mike Maggiore does not write, nor talk that way in a public forum.

    Nor should you.

West Covina/ Edgewood Football is above that.

  • HuskyDo

Hey maybe the pups from West Co can finally win a leauge tittle outright now they dont have to deal with the Big Dogs any more lol. Talk about a decade of bieng dominated Dan i recall maybe 3 wins against SH this decade. ouch lol… I think WC will stop scheduling SH after 3 more beatings.

  • Dan

    Dan Fan,
Your point is well taken and your right, Maggiore would not give excuses for a loss on a public forum, being the good man that he is, he takes the bad with the good and moves on.
I on the other hand am a non affiliated fan
of the program and I admit that my enthusiasm for the program gets the best of me sometimes and thus the explanations and excuses may sometimes come around. I will try to keep them to a minimum from now on… Well on second thought, given that my passion sometimes gets the best of me, I shouldn’t make any promises I can’t keep so lets just play it by ear for now. Maybe a disclaimer like the one below would help once in a while. lol

The views and opinions expressed by this blogger in no way reflect the views and opinions of the West Covina or any other sports program.

  • Dan

    HuskyDo!!
Yeah it seems like the Huskies have the Bulldogs number many a times, but only three teams in the whole SGV do, CO and Amat would be the other two. So that tells me we have a pretty good thing going on over here in Bulldog land, and on the occasional times that we do beat one of the big three it’s a sweet sweet feeling!!!
I hope they don’t stop the rivalry and I tell you what, I like our chances in week 5 this year!

  • COME BAC IS A @#$%+^&%?~!

    HuskieDo,
Too bad the same cannot be said for you . Looks like you won’t see a league or CIF title in quite a while now that you are really in with the big dogs. Considering your track record against big programs when you schedule them the future looks bleak . Instead of DR in your way you now have 5 or 6 ,maybe more to overcome.

  • As I See It

    Dan & WC Kid -

12/6/08 – Playoff game Diamond Ranch vs West Covina. DR wins 39-7 and it was not even that close. DR played mostly soph and JV players in the second half. Sorry players I was at the game. OUCH!!!

  • Dan

    As I see it,
12/6/08, thats ancient history!! I can’t even remember that far back, ohhh that night,, yeah
that was ugly,, don’t want to see that again… But that was that once in a lifetime team from Diamond Ranch with 5 D1 players that still got mopped by Charter Oak, it’s a new day my brother, I don’t think your team is gonna be on that level in the next season or two so hopefully your boy’s won’t come into league thinking its going to be a cake walk cause they’ll get their arses handed to them if they do, can’t wait to see you in week 9, should be a fun game.

  • wc kidd.

The huskies talking issh about wc team when we them last year with rickey johnsons late touchdown run to win not only the game…but LEAGUE. So I can’t wait till they play those cocky huskies nxt season who all they do is run their big mouths. There’s always a next season for WCHS Vs. SHHS rivalry in football\basketball. And I’m taking WC in both sports.
