Nogales names former Servite player Sebastian Hernandez to be next football coach

“I’m ecstatic,” said Hernandez, who graduated from Servite in 1996 and played free safety at Division III St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. “I’m so fired up to be a part of this program. It’s been a goal of mine to be a head varsity coach and lead a program.”

After a long search that included several local candidates, Nogales High School has chosen Sebastian Hernandez to be its next football coach. You can also read about it In the Huddle with Aram Tolegian

  • Huh?

He sure did give up a lot of points at Norte Vista! I’m sure he’ll get a warm SGV welcome!

  • Nogales

Leave it up to Nogales to screw this up…An unproven coach that played at a good high school 14 years ago. Played D3 back east. Great credentials!!!!! Nogales wins CIF right away, NOT!! The 30 other applicants that lost out on the job must have been real winners!!!!!

  • noble none

Same O Same O for Nogales. This is what you call a thorough search.? IMO this was a Latino Principal, Hiring a Latino Coach. There were candidates with I am sure more experience. Problem in todays hiring world is Networking. If someone knows someone who knows you the hiring person, your friend of friend or direct friend most likely gets the job. Standard practice now. Jobs are tough to get as it is, so a friend now gets the job over a more qualified person. What does it do as far as getting Nogales back to some form of respectability on the Gridiron? Nothing. Unless this guy turns into a football genius overnite I dont see Nogales going anywhere.

  • SGV For 30 Years

Well if you are going to be a head coach you have to take the opportunities that are presented to you. Especially if you are a teacher. Not to many teaching spots out there.
Nogales got a young coach with alot of energy & ideas about how he wants his program to run. Here is my advice if you are going to try to run the spread next year. Build a rock solid defense first. The next thing you need to do is schedule Walnut and Rowland (Since that’s where YOUR best players are) to get your top kids to stay there. Lastly, don’t throw away that ole Wing-T playbook just yet.

    SGV Ouuuut!!

  • LA Insider

Good Lord guys, cut this new coach a break! You know absolutely NOTHING about this guy except his name, age and alma mater and you’re already judging him as a coach? Jesus, give him a year to see what he’s all about. Hell, give him a DAY so he can establish his policies, meet the kids, set up a staff…..SOMETHING!

What’s wrong with High School sports today is not, as noble none says, Networking! The problem with HS sports today is people like you who think they always know better than administrators, athletic directors, coaches, etc.

Here’s my last thing: Every coach has to start somewhere right? They have to develop their coaching resumes at some school. Typically they start at the bottom and work their way up, right? Well I got news for you Nogales…..YOU ARE THE BOTTOM!

  • FBFan

I couldn’t agree with you more LA Insider. The guy hasn’t even been the HC for more than a couple of days and people are already blasting him. Give the guy a chance.

    LA Insider,

I hope you follow your own advice if you disagree with the hiring of Los Altos’s head coach.

  • Coach Not the issue

When you can get the players that live in Walnut and that are zoned for Nogales as a HS you may get more players as far as numbers and you may get more Talent in the process. The Walnut School District has that lottery set up for a reason, Walnut kids and Parents pay good money for their homes and do not want their kids attending Nogales because of the neighborhood behind Nogales HS, AKA the “hood”. Most of these Nogales zoned parents that have homes in Walnut do not want their kids sujected to what goes on there and accross the street from the school (best way market area) where people get killed and robbed. If that neighboehood was clean they may consider sending their kids to Nogales. by the way, get rid of that Indian already, what a decay he is.

  • Great post! I wish you could follow up to this topic 😛

  • Well I truly enjoyed reading it. This tip offered by you is very useful for accurate planning.

  • I think youve made some genuinely interesting points. Not too many people would basically think about this the way you just did. Im seriously impressed that theres so much about this subject thats been uncovered and you did it so well, with so very much class. Great one you, man! Seriously fantastic things right here.

  • Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  • I am constantly invstigating online for articles that can benefit me. Thank you!

  • What I wouldnt give to have a debate with you about this. You just say so many things that come from nowhere that Im pretty sure Id have a fair shot. Your blog is terrific visually, I mean people wont be bored. But others who can see past the videos and the layout wont be so impressed together with your generic understanding of this subject.

  • Congratulations on your castle being published in Elle. And congrats to Elle magazine for being so smart!

  • didn’t get the job

Now that the season is over, I will say I was one of the candidates that didn’t even get called in for an interview. I have college coaching expereince and a clear teaching credential. I’ve been at least called in to interview at WAY better schools than Nogales. This coached was pre-picked. Happenes all the time. We call it a “celebrity hire”. He’ll learn, just not enough, not quickly enough.

  • I do not work well site in internet eplorer, but i used firefox and is ok.

  • Have you considered adding some videos to your article? I think it will really enhance viewers’ understanding.
