San Dimas’ rally falls short

With visiting Morningside raining three-pointers and driving up and down the court like dragsters, it appeared San Dimas was going to get run out of its own building during Friday’s CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA second-round boys basketball playoff game.
But not only did the Saints take a good punch, they fought back from a 15-point first-quarter deficit to take a three-point lead in the second half before eventually falling to the eighth-seed Monarchs, 80-68.

Morningside’s Brennan Jackson sank three 3-pointers and scored 15 of his team-high 22 points in the first quarter to give the Monarchs a 25-10 lead.
“We weren’t geared in to how quick they were going to play,” Saints coach Bruce Robbins said. “Because we weren’t geared into that, it took a while to get adjusted to that game speed. Once we adjusted, we played pretty well.”
Chris Barbato’s game-high 23 points and K.J. Byrd’s 19 points helped lead the Saints back.
After trailing 39-32 at half, Barbato sank two free throws to finish an 8-0 run, trimming the Monarchs’ lead to 46-42 with 2:39 left in the third quarter.
Morningside’s Alante Young, who finished with 20 points, scored inside to push the lead to 48-42, but the Saints followed with a 9-0 run, capped by Byrd’s putback to give the Saints a 51-48 lead with 51 seconds left in the quarter.
But after missing a shot that would have extended the lead, Young scored inside and DJ Harris hit a half-court shot at the third-quarter buzzer to give he Monarchs the lead back, 53-51, heading into the fourth.
That appeared to be the back-breaker, the Monarchs scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter — an 11-0 run that pushed their lead to 59-51.
“We had a chance to extend our three-point lead and missed a big opportunity, because the crowd and the momentum were all in our favor,” Robbins said. “When they hit the half-court shot to take the lead back, the wind sort of came out of our sails.
“When they got back up (by double digits) again, it was hard to come back from. We started rushing shots, quit staying in front of the ball, allowed dribble penetration, and just stopped basically doing all the things that got us back in the game.”
Barbato’s jumper with 4:02 left cut the Monarchs’ lead to 63-58 in the fourth, but the Monarchs answered with six-straight points to close it out.
“We only played seven guys tonight, but the seven guys played extremely hard,” Robbins said. “They were a quick, physical and athletic team, we have nothing to be ashamed of.”
San Dimas finishes the season 19-9 while Morningside (18-12) advances to Tuesday’s quarterfinals to take on top-seeded Price.
“We won the coin flip and would have hosted Price (in the quarterfinals),” Robbins said. “It would have been fun to advance and watch those guys (Price) come here.”
