Feeding off a rowdy home crowd, the Monrovia High School girls basketball team nearly knocked off a league champion for the second consecutive time in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3A playoffs, but eighth-seed Sierra Vista held on for a 47-46 second-round victory on Saturday.

Senior Dakota Fabro finished with a team-high 13 points and hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 1:04 left to send the Dons (21-5) to Wednesday’s quarterfinals against either top-seed Santa Margarita or West Torrance.
Monrovia’s Maryssa Black, who also finished with 13 points, sank a pair of free throws to give the Wildcats a 46-44 lead with 1:27 left.
But Fabro answered with a clutch 3-pointer from the corner, and the Dons held on during a wild final minute.
“It was so nerve racking,” Fabro said. “I was hoping to God it would go in. It was just an unbelievable game, we all played our hearts out.”
September Offutt finished with nine points for the Wildcats and had a chance to put them back in front with 27 seconds left, but she missed the front end of a one-and-one, though the Wildcats got it back.
Wildcats forward Ashley Cook (12 points) grabbed the rebound, but her go-ahead attempt bounced off the front of the rim and over the backboard with 18 seconds left, giving the ball back to the Dons, still clinging to a one-point lead.
But after the Dons inbounded the ball, Monrovia didn’t foul immediately, allowing the Dons to run the clock down to 2.3 seconds before fouling. With a foul to give, Sierra Vista inbounded it again, and were fouled.
After Estrella Rivera missed her free throw, the clock ran out before the Wildcats could get off a shot.
Monrovia (12-17), which had knocked off Mission Valley League champ Rosemead 51-48 in the first round, were hoping to avenge a 62-45 loss to Sierra Vista during an Arroyo tournament game in December.
“We found a way to get it done,” Sierra Vista coach Keith Locklear said. “In life you’re not always going to be at your best. Monrovia played close to their best but we scrapped and got it done.”
Locklear said winning earlier in the year (against Monrovia) combined with the Wildcats’ newfound energy stemming from its home fans played key roles.
“You have to give them a lot of credit, that was quite an atmosphere they had going on tonight,” Locklear said. “Plus I’m a guy who’s always trying to frame a game, and when you blow a team out the first time, how do you do that? What’s the carrot? How can I twist the knife to get the kids motivated?
“I didn’t do a very good job of it, but that’s why you give Monrovia credit, anytime you can turn the tables on a team that beat you soundly the first time is a big accomplishment on their part.”
Crystal Avila scored nine big points inside and Valeria Rivera finished with eight points, but it was the Dons’ composure in the fourth that Locklear was most proud of.
“They (players) were telling me all night they couldn’t hear me, so they really had to rely on each other,” Locklear said. “In that fourth quarter they pulled together as a team and got it done.”

Good luck to the girls basketball team from South Hills.

The Lady Bearcats destroyed Gabrielino, so lets see what they can do against Gahr, I think they can keep rolling.

    Go Bearcats!

  • LA What A Joke

91-17 raises a very interesting question, how does a team with a 6-21 record make the playoffs. I do understand the process, but this is a perfect example of a problem with the system. I heard the main reason that they applied for the at large bid was so the girls could get a patch, you have got to be kidding me. This basketball program has gotten so bad that Wilson destoryed them 52-25 and 57-27.

  • Puzzled

Can’t figure CIF. Last year Rosemead girls were unranked, won league and got Charter Oak at home in first round and won. This year Rosemead is 9th ranked, 19-4, beat eight ranked teams, only lost to ranked teams, went undefeated in league and gets rewarded with a first round game at home against Monrovia, a semi-finalist last year?
By the way, when a player in the front court dribbles into the back court about 10 feet and then goes back to the front court that should be called back court. It wasn’t called. That should have told Rosemead something in first quarter that the visitors would get away with a lot. “Let them play” for the playoffs without many calls does give an advantage to a team like Monrovia that is big and physical. Rosemead shouldn’t even be in the same division because players can get hurt when there is such a size mismatch. Ask the Rosemead girls how their body feels today.

This year CIF decided to allow anyone who wanted to be in the Play-offs to get in. Basically they make more money with more teams. DR had to play Camarillo on Thrusday night. That game could have been much worse than the 73-33 score indicated. Camarillo didn’t get the ball past half court for the first 2 minutes of the game. The DR coach called off the dogs basically in the 2nd qtr, and played mostly a JV line-up in the 4th. Some coaches would have just kept rolling up the points. Our coach have won with class and dignity all season.

    WE ARE DR!!!

Fred any ideas on POY and COA for girls basketball this year?

  • FredJ

Sure I have an idea, whats yours, I can’t spill that yet.

  • Hoopster

Actually I do Fred. Let me give you a hint. his team is #1 in the SGV for 2 years straight. They beat most of the top IE teams, and Spanked Bonita (one of your favorite teams) twice without one of his top players. Seems like a no brainer doesn’t it. Final hint, the schools intials are DR.

  • cmonhoopster

It’s not a contest for who has far and away the most talent, heck, fred could coach that DRanch team to 20 wins. the question is who did the best coaching job, who over-achieved and something says that might be the team from Covina, Sierra Vista or even Glendora, now those were coaching jobs.

  • hoopster

Seems to me that having talented players and keeping them all happy and working together as a unit would take quite a bit of coaching, and buy in by the players. I’ve seen that team play a few times. They might play the best TEAM defense of any team I’ve seen in a long time. I also noticed that coach James has slowly developed some of those bench players into key components of his team. Basketball is a team game. All you have to do is take a look at DRs’ stats on Maxpreps. You will see that they are a very balanced team. I’m not knocking anything those other coaches have done. They have all done great jobs. I just think that maybe it’s time to recognize that having great talent doesn’t always mean a great team. It’s time to give the man some credit.
