LA PUENTE
— Bringing new meaning to the phrase, “survive and advance,” the Los Altos High School girls soccer team held its collective breath as Santa Ynez’s 32-goal scorer Alisa Silsbee broke free in stoppage time on a defensive breakdown, leaving her all alone with Los Altos goalkeeper Justine Padilla. Silsbee’s shot, however, hit the left post and Emily Ineman’s follow skidded wide, allowing the Conquerors to escape with a 1-0 victory over the Pirates (18-7-4) in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 quarterfinal at La Puente High School on Friday. “That was horrible,” said Los Altos sweeper Lauren Velasquez, who was superb to that point. “All you can do is pray it misses, and it did. What an indescribable feeling.”
The third-seed Conquerors (25-1-2) advance to Tuesday’s semifinals, where they will host second-seed Granite Hills, a 5-0 winner over Serrano.
“When a defense like ours faces an offense like that, something is going to give,” Los Altos coach Chris Reeder said, “That breakdown was a coaches nightmare. But you know what, we survived it. Someone’s looking down on us.”
Both teams played solid defensively, allowing few chances during the run of play until Los Altos’ Amy Shubin delivered a perfect chip into space for sophomore Malaysia Avery, whose quick shot grazed off Pirates goalkeeper Jessica Mauk and rolled in for the lone goal and game winner in the 54th minute.
