Bishop Amat and Damien compete with the top seeds, but it wasn’t enough; La Verne Lutheran advances to third straight title game

Bishop Amat came to play tonight, they trailed by 5 and 10 points most of the night before settling on a 66-54 loss. Daniel Rodriguez (14 points) and Tyler Goldston (15 points) can ball, but the Lancers missed too many 3-pointers early, but still only trailed 25-21 at half. They shutout Cal-bound Allen Crabbe in the first half, but he made the difference in the second, where he scored all of his game-high 21 points. The other Cal-guy Richard Solomon finished with 8 points, but all in all, I got to take my hat off, they competed the whole night.

Friday’s semifinals
Division 2A
Eisenhower 82, Damien 74
Division 4A
Price 66, Bishop Amat 54
Division 5AA
La Verne Lutheran 60, Pasadena Poly 42

Bishop Amat game story: Amat, despite throwing a late scare into Price, suffered a 66-54 loss in the semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs.

Damien game story: Alex Varner put Eisenhower on his back and led them to their second consecutive CIF-SS title game, scoring seven consecutive points in a 92-second span in the fourth period to pave the way for an 82-74 Ike victory at Redlands East Valley High School, its second consecutive semifinal victory over Damien.

Let’s remember that when Amat won that Championship in 2002 they were the #4 seed in 3AA and they also faced the #1 seed/#2 team in State in the semifinals when they played Artesia. That Artesia team had a much bigger front line than even LVL with several players over 6’7″/6″8,and a bunch of scholarship guys. The Lancers knocked of Artesia in a masterful performance – and it was on the road.

So it’s been done before, albeit under different leadership with different players. After beating three at-large teams to get here, this is a chance for these Lancers to step up show what they’re made of against a great basketball team.

Did I mention lately that the 2002 Lancers are still the last SGV team to win an upper division CIF championship in boys basketball?

  • Spartan 4 Life

Eisenhower’s had a nice season. That ends tonight. Go Damien!!!!

to joe amat: Artes- is a public school they dont have scholarships !PS: Trojan Nation wish your boys nothing but the best of luck!

  • Joe Amat

    Trojan fan,

Appreciate that bit of info. Scholarship players as in 6 or 7 “College Scholarships”. Certainly high schools don’t give athletic “scholarships”. Do they?

And after re-reading my post I did mean Artesia’s front line was even bigger than Price’s, not LVL – but them too.

But thanks for the well wishes.

  • Damien on Road

Price beat Eisenhower by 2 76-74 Ike also holds wins over Etiwanda, Colony,Inglewood, and Compton – all still in the playoffs.

  • CO Bro

Good luck to both squads tonight. I know you both will rep the SGV well.

The teams Bishop Amat and Damien have played gave them a cakewalk into the semi-finals. Now the real test begins. Eisenhower lacks height however last year they beat Loyola and Rocklin who had 6’9″ center in UCLA’s Lane. Amat is used to playing in a tougher league and may stay with Price for 2 quarters. Then the D1 studs Crabbe and Solomon will take over. The CIFSS has way to many divisions and the playoffs thus far have been boring. The best game was Corona Centennial-Etiwanda game.

  • Spartan Fan

Damien is going to get revenge. TONIGHTS THE NIGHT THEYVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS PAST YEAR. I know for a fact as well, even though its all the way out in Redlands, there are ALOTTT of Damien fans still going. Good Luck Spartans. Take us to that Honda Center.

SO FRED, WHAT HAPPEND TO YOUR ALL EVERYTHING CEASR GUERRO?…I THINK HE MAY HAVE BIT OFF MORE THAN HE COULD CHEW WITH THE BIG BOYS. HIS TEAM WENT 14-11 WITH A LOT OF BLOWOUT LOSSES. HE WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF IN THE MONTVIEW LEAGUE WHERE HE BELONGS. I TRULY DONT THINK UCLA IS EAGER TO ROLL INTO TO HIS NEIGHBORHOOD AND OFFER HIM A STARTING SPOT ON THEIR BENCH. NEXTIME WRITE ABOUT PLAYERS WHO DESERVE THE INK!

  • just sayin’

Very Anonymous – Guerrero didn’t play this year because he had to sit out as a transfer. Maybe without him on the floor is why his team went 14-11. Maybe YOU should know what you;re talking about before YOU waste ink.

Fred, I know this is off topic… but what’s the deal with the Los Altos job??? Spring ball is in a few weeks? There are quite a few schools lagging with hiring coaches.

    And good luck AMAT!

Damien and Bishop Amat are good teams, but they have both benefitted from easy cif brackets. Don’t confuse a great team just because they have had an easy road. If either one wins tonight, i will be convinced. However, I think Chino Hills, South hills, and Bonita are all as good or better than damien and amat. In fact I think bonita beat both of them.

I predict both lose tonight, but the damien game will be closer.

  • LA Status

LA extended an offer to Coach Kiki Mendoza, and planned on announcing it yesterday. Only problem is Coach Kiki Mendoza declined the offered. School administration is demanding an experienced head coach, and experienced head coaches dont want the job.

    It could be a while……

Skipped the Lutheran game since I knew they’d win to catch Amat/Price.

Amat played great D and got most of the calls. Price walked into the gym before the game and acted as if they had already won the game. They played the first half that way too. In the end, Price was too tall and too athletic. They have issues though.

The 2 big Cal-bound Knights (#’s 21 and 23)are way too soft to play in the Pac-10. Immensely talented? Yes, but neither will ever get off the bench in college unless they “man-up”. The other big kid (#20) is pillow soft as well. I did really like their point guard (#31)though. What a tough kid!

Overall I was impressed with the Lancers particularly with #1 and #55. I walked into the gym completely neutral, but found myself cheering wildly for Amat as the game progressed.

Be proud Lancer fans! Your guys represented well.

  • sc

hoopfan-correct Bonita beat both Amat and Damien, lost to Chino Hills by 2 with a sick pg, SoHills did beat BHS in game #1, that said both are quality teams, well coached, they are just in the right CIF division.
Bonita is in 3A for some reason and it is loaded with some of the best in the state.

  • CIF BASKETBALL

i was inpressed with #3 Junior guard Daniel
Rodriguez, in my perspective hes the only amat guard that was ready to play, at some points he had to guard Price’ 6’9 forward who did play soft knowing the fact he was being guarded by 6’1 guard….good luck nxt year #3 and bishop amat!

  • Is it time yet?

Does this mean Joe Amat will give the Lancer Basketball coaches some love now?

  • Spartan Fan

Eisenhower was insane. They shot 3s like it was no big deal. Big plays came from Chris Adams with a good amount of 3s && I loved how Damien had way more fans than Eisenhower. AND Eisenhower was the home team AND Damien fans had to travel 50 miles.

  • Spartan Brereazy

All that is good, AND we also lost.

I went to the Price Amat game where is that socall bbhoops guy…I want to collect my bet! Price was too tall, athletic they met their match….Amat out rebounded them in the first half and judging from the coronary their coach was having most of the night…Amat outplayed them and except for the poor 3 point shooting the game was all Amat!

Interstingly I sat in front of too guys from Oregon one from oregon State and the other from I believe Oregon Weslayan I believe…their comments were as follows….they had spent the last two weeks in so cal watching playoff games…this past tuesday they had seen Mater Dei destroy an opponent and for their money tonight was worth the visit to west covina as they wanted to see Price…..their comments simply stated…they had not seen a team play pressure defense since the ball hawking days of Comton and the Verbum Dei Prime days…Amat was not only at a significant size disadvantage they controlled the boards most of the game, they controlled the tempo most of the game…they had Pice off balance most of the night ….had the Price coach scared straight and except for that poor shooting…Amat by volumes tonight was the better team….that’s why fans we play the game….I enjoyed watching this game…and I would wager that most fans did as well perhaps the Price fans were much less comfortable but nonetheless entertained….Amat congratulations on a outstanding season and I do feel less fortunate in that I only saw you play tonight for the second time….and trust me you did not disappoint…be proud and hold your heads high you were truly the better team tonight!

  • basketballs

    Well I think it’s obvious…

Bishop Amat would have knocked the crap out of La Verne Lutheran.

But are we all really that surprised?

  • huh?

Amat by volumes tonight was the better team.

And they lost by 12?? lol

  • >>>

Basketballs – you obviously know very little about LVL.

Yeah they got pounded by Price – but lets look at another example.

Amat lost to Damien who lost to Eisenhower and yes you got it they lost to LVL. So yeah we have no idea on any given night who would have “kicked the crap” out of who.

LVL PLayed six teams that are in division finals going 2 -4 (beat Compton and Eisenhower – lost to Oceanview, Pasadena (OT), Price and Luezinger) and only once did they get the crap beat out of them.

Once again, this is without a senior on the floor. So yeah based on a one game comparision, I am sure you are right, Amat would kick the crap out of LVL. ;)

  • Amat looked good!

    Ok,
I see alot of (” this team would beat the crap out of that team”) and so forth. Lets NOT forget at ANY given time, everyone can beat anybody. I look at Price as a example. I was at the game vs Amat, and I thought the Lancers played very well. Price during warm ups looked as though they had already won the game. I think they thought Amat had no shot. Maybe they read Fred’s blog about being 34 point favorites. Amat had a VERY GOOD season and should be proud, and this could be something to build on. When Price needed to turn up the heat they did, forcing Amat to do nothing but take 3′s. Lets not forget Price was held to the mid 60′s by AMAT, YET scored in the 70′s vs Eisenhower, and 90′s vs Artesia. They also beat the TOP two teams from Oakland’s O’Dowd & Mclymonds, as well as one of the top Oregon teams. I think AMAT was ready, and Price was flat, but the height, and talent proved too much. Hats off to the Lancers, they should be proud.

    Now onto baseball.
Today was opening day for some teams, but it looks like the rain will delay the day. Its going to be a fun Sprimg and it looks like AMAT, and S.H will again be dominant in the area. I follow these two teams close, but I think a couple of others could suprise. Look for the SGV to represent well during tournments, and CIF!

    Recruit said:

Huh people….price did not even try. Amat still sucked

Sonny boy…a number of reasons may responsible for your statement… but help us understand you negative remarks.

I will offer a recap for you of what upwards of 1000 spectators witnessed….

I was at the game, prior to the game Price came out (players and coaches) very cocky (son that means the were over confident) then the game began and that cockiness turned into confusion and then frustration as was evident in coaches (all 5 up off the bench most of the first half screaming directions to their players so much so that officials had to motion to the Price sideline to sit down. The Price coach was anything but calm as his players were not adjusting to the pressure that was being applied, and could not controlled the tempo of the game and for that reason could not play their game. This highly publicized team with blue chip recruits was out rebounded, out hustled and out played, and had it not been for threes not falling Price would would have been trailing on the scoreboard too, instead of clinging to a small lead at the half. Judging from the demeanor Price received a serious azz chewing at half time….unfortunately with 4 minutes remaining in the third period the game was tied and fast forwarding to the fourth quarter with two minutes remaining Price was clinging to a 5 point lead…..

I am going to venture a couple guesses for your statement.

I am unclear from your statement whether you attended this game or not and if you did not attend the game…but it would probably be helpful to you to read some of those remarks made by others at this who were in attendance at the game. I am sure that if you were there being the RECUIT you claim to be you would have to understanding of what took place Friday night at West Covina High school.

Secondly, this was a semi final playoff match for those who have coached, played and been there, there is not excuse for showing up either overconfident or not ready to play. There may be other emotions that play into the game but the cardinal rule of this sport especially, YOU DON’T TAKE ANY OPPONENT LIGHTLY WHEN YOU REACH THIS LEVEL, That’s why we play the game because anything can happen on any given night.

The other reason I would expect is more suspect here is that perhaps this just “SOUR GRAPES ” for you son…there are a number of solid basketball programs here in the SGV ( I apologize if I miss any) such as Bonita, Damian, San Dimas, Charter Oak, South Hills, LV Lutheran and programs on the rise at Baldwin Park, Northview and many others who made their respective schools proud that does you distaste extend to them as well, or is there something more that we don’t understand?

Could this be that you are trying to clear the memory of an earlier 34 point loss to to same team by LVL, and all the hipe Fred started with his question earlier in the week? Son, remember what I stated earlier, That’s why we play the game because anything can happen on any given night. The out come or the Price/LVL or Amat/Price contests do change the fact that LVL or Amat have had quality seasons.

and son if you don’t come to that same conclusion soon….please for yourself…SEEK SOME PROFESSIONAL HELP!

  • Fred needs to clean up this mess

ole hickory your points were well taken except when you “reached” and assumed recruit was a disgruntled LVL aficiando. Is that fair to sling a comment about their 34 point loss when one game had nothing to do with another. LVL beat some outstanding teams while Amat had one great effort all season from what I saw. Amat was an over achieving team by most observations. I seen Amat three times this year and this effort was herculean for sure against Price and had Wiard’s fingerprints all over it. In basketball tempo is king and obviously Amat controlled it as long as they could. Maybe in the LVL-Price game things were more personal and they game and tempo went the wrong way early and often. Give credit for Amat’s near win but don’t deny LVL is a team who has seen more wars and won than you’re giving them credit for. Maybe Fred has allowed this festering snideness to exist about LVL and it’s Basketball team too long. They are on their way to their third straight CIF Championship Game and no one is bemoaning Windward’s “assembled” team or Price’s “assembled” team any more than they used to Amat’s “assembled” teams of year ago.

Fred maybe it’s time you address your LVL step child mentality, it’s certainly not good journalism and has given a footing to dismissive comments that lack foundation or merit.
