While Damien caught almost everyone by surprise when it advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division 2A semifinals last year after finishing fifth in the Sierra League, the Spartans are not fooling anyone this time. After finishing second behind highly regarded Chino Hills in the Sierra, Damien (19-7) earned the No. 4 seed in Division 2A when the boys basketball pairings were announced on Sunday. All first-round games are Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Wrestling Duals: West Covina gets to the semifinals, others falter in earlier rounds

By Steve Ramirez, Staff Writer
West Covina High School didn’t win a CIF-Southern Section dual wrestling championship Saturday. But Bulldogs coach Donnie Stephens wasn’t too disappointed, either.
West Covina, despite missing one key competitor and having another athlete wrestle with an injury, enjoyed a solid day at the Division 2 meet at Canyon Springs in Moreno Valley. The Bulldogs upset No. 1 seed Corona Centennial, 39-35, in the second round before losing to Royal, 36-28, in the semifinals.

Bishop Amat rallies from a goal down to keep unbeaten season in tact, ties La Salle, 1-1

Bishop Amat High School’s April Juarez scored the equalizer in the 70th minute in what ended in a 1-1 draw against La Salle. But she’s frustrated after missing a couple chances to win it after the final whistle is blown.

By Fred J. Robledo, Staff Writer
While La Salle gained some much needed swagger heading into next week’s CIF-Southern Section Division 4 girls soccer playoffs, top-ranked Bishop Amat found out what it was made of with its undefeated season in jeopardy. Guess that’s why Friday’s 1-1 draw after 80 minutes and two overtimes was appealing to both coaches.

Inland Insider: Glendora leaves Sierra League in style, winning first boys soccer title

Chino Hills Tom checks out games all over the I.E., Friday he watched the Glendora boys soccer team clinch the Sierra League title with a 2-1 win over Ayala.

Tom Wrote: The Glendora high school boys soccer team will leave for the Baseline League next season, but not after winning its first Sierra League title in school history with a 2-1 victory at home over Ayala on Friday.
And what made it sweeter is that both goals came from an unlikely duo. Glendora junior defender Ferny Martinez finished Jeremy Bishop’s long cross in the 77th minute, breaking a 1-1 tie and ending a title drought that had lasted far too long for the Tartans. (To continue, click thread)

West Covina Football: No Amat, but Venice, South Hills and Glendora a Bonafide Trifecta

Spoke with West Covina coach Mike Maggiore, who said a game with Bishop Amat was close to happening, but he thought facing South Hills in week 2 on a Thursday night at the District Field was more appealing, and I couldn’t agree more now that the rivals are not in the same league anymore. BTW, I’m hearing that in addition to Garfield, Bishop Amat is close to inking a nonleague game with Venice at home.

West Covina sked: Week 0 (Covina H), Week 1 (Venice H), Week 2 (South Hills A), Week 3 (Glenodra A), Week 4 (Walnut A), Week 5 (Rowland A), Week 6 bye; Week 7 (Los Altos H), Week 8 (Bonita H), Week 9 (Diamond Ranch A); Week 10 (Dia. Bar H).

Glendora heads to playoffs with a victory

The Inland Insider took a look at Glendora-Ayala after Tartans coach Mike LeDuc talked about the teams’ playoff chances following a plethora of injuries. Don’t count out the Tartans just yet, maybe their 18th win of the season will spark something.

Chino HIlls Tom wote: In what has been, at times, a frustrating season ended on a positive note for the Glendora Tartans after they avenged an earlier season loss to the Ayala Bulldogs Thursday night by getting their 18th win of the year 50-48. On senior night the Tartans started quick behind the hot outside shooting of Brett Helberg, who scored 8 of his game high 18 points in the first quarter, racing to a 7-0 lead and ending the 1st quarter up 12-8.

Rowland’s Henry Calistro was amazing, scoring his 32nd goal in the win
“Henry is the best player I’ve seen in a long time. He should be our league MVP and do great wherever he goes. I’ll be interested to see where the future takes him, he’s tremendous.” — South Hills coach Casey Stratton

COVINA
– The San Antonio League boys soccer race was exciting to the final whistle. After going winless the first 12 games of the season, South Hills had a chance to earn a share of the league title with a victory over Rowland on Thursday. But instead Rowland won its first league title since 1985 with a 2-1 victory at Covina District Field, which not only denied the Huskies a piece of the championship, but knocked them out of the playoffs entirely.
