San Dimas’ rally falls short

With visiting Morningside raining three-pointers and driving up and down the court like dragsters, it appeared San Dimas was going to get run out of its own building during Friday’s CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA second-round boys basketball playoff game.
But not only did the Saints take a good punch, they fought back from a 15-point first-quarter deficit to take a three-point lead in the second half before eventually falling to the eighth-seed Monarchs, 80-68.

HACIENDA HEIGHTS – Freshmen, it’s been said, are to be seen but never heard, and leading is usually definitely out of the question.
Then there’s Los Altos High School’s Stephanie Contreras, who’s proving to be the exception.
She’s not only disputing the adage, she’s blowing it out of the water, scoring 171 goals during the Conquerors water polo team’s first 21 games.
Contreras goes into her team’s CIF-Southern Section playoff opener a mere 12 goals from the CIF-SS single-season record of 183, set by La Salle’s Kara-Leigh Huse in 2008.

“I’m ecstatic,” said Hernandez, who graduated from Servite in 1996 and played free safety at Division III St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. “I’m so fired up to be a part of this program. It’s been a goal of mine to be a head varsity coach and lead a program.”

One of the problems with baseball last year is that coaches — many from the top teams – do not report stats. This has to change, this is the Valley’s most dominant sport, we all deserve to know how the kids are doing. I can promise the coaches who don’t report loved seeing their stats and names in the paper when they were playing, so no more excuses of being scouted or this and that, if everyone is reporting, it’s an even playing field. All this stuff about not reporting because it’s about team and not the individual stats is baloney — that flies in Little League — not competitive high school baseball. Posting stats didn’t stop Amat from winning two titles in a row or San Dimas from winning a title last year, and besides, when coaches are posting, it’s fun to follow a year like the one Josh Leyland had with the Saints, and you can’t do that if teams aren’t reporting. I wanted to put a list of the top returning pitchers, but with half the Valley not reporting last year, these are the returners we know for sure.

As expected, the Bishop Amat High School girls soccer team earn the top seed in Division 4 when the CIF-Southern Section girls soccer pairings were released on Monday. The undefeated Lancers (24-0-2), with 106 goals and 21 shutouts, will open the first round of the playoffs at home against Pacific View’s third-place finisher Adolfo Camarillo (7-8-4). All wild card games are Wednesday with the first round on Friday. All games start at 3 p.m.
