The Baldwin Park high school boys soccer team has been the top-ranked team most of the season in the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 polls, so it was no surprise the undefeated Braves (20-0-2) earned the No. 1 seed when the boys soccer playoff pairings were announced on Monday. All wild card games are today with the first round on Thursday. All games start at 3 p.m.

Boys Pairings: Damien and Bishop Amat earn fourth seeds while Lutheran No. 2 in 5AA

While Damien caught almost everyone by surprise when it advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division 2A semifinals last year after finishing fifth in the Sierra League, the Spartans are not fooling anyone this time. After finishing second behind highly regarded Chino Hills in the Sierra, Damien (19-7) earned the No. 4 seed in Division 2A when the boys basketball pairings were announced on Sunday. All first-round games are Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Girls Pairings: Diamond Ranch No. 2 in 2A; Bishop Amat and Bonita also earn top four seeds

With reigning area player of the year Janelle Kearney returning last week from a knee sprain that sidelined her for nearly a month, the Diamond Ranch High School girls basketball team is finally healthy and poised to make a run at the CIF-Southern Section Division 2A title game after earning a No. 2 seed when the pairings were released on Sunday. All first-round games are on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Wrestling Duals: West Covina gets to the semifinals, others falter in earlier rounds

West Covina High School didn’t win a CIF-Southern Section dual wrestling championship Saturday. But Bulldogs coach Donnie Stephens wasn’t too disappointed, either.
West Covina, despite missing one key competitor and having another athlete wrestle with an injury, enjoyed a solid day at the Division 2 meet at Canyon Springs in Moreno Valley. The Bulldogs upset No. 1 seed Corona Centennial, 39-35, in the second round before losing to Royal, 36-28, in the semifinals.

Bishop Amat rallies from a goal down to keep unbeaten season in tact, ties La Salle, 1-1


Bishop Amat High School’s April Juarez scored the equalizer in the 70th minute in what ended in a 1-1 draw against La Salle. But she’s frustrated after missing a couple chances to win it after the final whistle is blown.

While La Salle gained some much needed swagger heading into next week’s CIF-Southern Section Division 4 girls soccer playoffs, top-ranked Bishop Amat found out what it was made of with its undefeated season in jeopardy. Guess that’s why Friday’s 1-1 draw after 80 minutes and two overtimes was appealing to both coaches.
